Charl Langeveldt urges South Africa to join the dots in pursuit of Test series win

Bowling coach tight-lipped on whether tourists will stick with two spinners at The Oval

Firdose Moonda04-Sep-2022Some golf was played, but only some, and no serious injuries were sustained during South Africa’s week off between the second and third Tests. Mostly, their break was about chilling hard as they approach the end of what bowling coach Charl Langeveldt called a “long tour for both the coaches and the players”, which has ebbed and flowed in extremes. The teams have matched each other almost blow-for-blow in results (one ODI apiece, one T20I apiece before South Africa clinched the series, one Test win by an innings apiece), personnel issues (Rassie van der Dussen will miss the third Test and see a finger specialist while Jonny Bairstow will be missing, too, off to see an ankle specialist) and playing styles (with the accepted narrative that their bowling attacks are similarly strong but England’s middle-order is ahead of South Africa’s) and there’s one fixture left to separate them. For Langeveldt, South Africa’s task is simple, though “easier said than done”: runs on the board and wickets in the bag.”If you don’t score enough, you’re not going to win Test matches. That’s the bottom line,” he said, repeating captain Dean Elgar’s assessment of where the Old Trafford Test went wrong. “And with the bowling, we had good spells but I felt we hadn’t got enough balls to put pressure from both ends. Sometimes we just have two soft balls, we release the pressure and that’s it. If we can touch up with that, we can restrict them, bowl them out cheaply and then bowl them out again. It’s easier said than done.”Related

Langeveldt can’t speak for South Africa’s batting except to say that he believes it’s “improved” recently and it only needs to be able to do just enough to give the bowlers something to work with. Anything, really, because Langeveldt is bullish about their abilities and their resolve to get even better. “When we’ve got runs on the board, we’ve got the bowling attack to put them under pressure. We’ve got a saying – 18 consecutive dot balls gets us a wicket,” Langeveldt said. That’s more of an ideal than a mantra at the moment, because South Africa have not bowled 18 successive score-less balls in the Test series so far. Their longest string is 15, in the first innings of the second Test, and that didn’t result in a wicket. The most number of dot balls they’ve bowled before taking a wicket is seven, and it came before Marco Jansen dismissed James Anderson to conclude the first Test. But Langeveldt had a broader point about closing down scoring opportunities and creating pressure. “It’s no use if one guy is bowling well from one end and we are leaking soft boundaries – not a lot of boundaries – but sometimes, we release the pressure and we need to touch up on that. If you get 18 balls in a good area, you ask good questions and you’ll get a wicket.”South Africa have conceded a boundary almost every two-and-half-overs (15.5 balls) in this series, compared to England’s boundary every three-and-half-overs (20.9 overs). That allows batters a release. When they’re able to plug that, they take wickets. Of the 30 England wickets to fall in the series so far, 13 came after a period of at least two boundary-less overs.Charl Langeveldt talks with Glenton Stuurman•Getty ImagesThe bowler chiefly responsible for that is Lungi Ngidi, who has taken on a new role of controlling the innings. Ngidi has the lowest economy rate among the South Africa bowlers – 2.93 – and has conceded the fewest boundaries among the seamers – 10 in 180 balls (or a boundary every 18 balls, as luck would have it). He does most of it at speeds of 140kph, with the slower-ball variation as a trump card.”Lungi has impressed me. His pace has been up. He has worked hard,” Langeveldt said. “He went to the IPL and I said just work on your fitness and work on just getting your action repeatable. He has also developed the slower ball and spent a lot of time with Dwayne Bravo and then there are other things that we have been working on – to get the wide yorker, the straight yorker and slower-ball bouncer right. But his slower ball has come a long way and people really struggle to pick it up.”Ngidi’s development as a bowler saw him preferred over Jansen for the second Test, where South Africa fielded two specialist spinners in anticipation of a surface which would take turn in the last two days. The match did not last long enough to see if their selection was justified and it’s too early to tell if they will go the same way the The Oval. While Langeveldt called it the “best English summer ever” because of how hot and dry it has been, four days before the third Test the pitch wore a healthy covering of green grass and with rain forecast in the lead-up to the match, a return to four quicks might be more likely. All of them, along with van der Dussen’s replacement in the squad, Wiaan Mulder, were training at full tilt on Sunday, South Africa’s second day back at work after their break. They returned to the nets on Saturday at London School of Economics grounds in New Malden but plan to lie low on Monday before final preparations begin on Tuesday. That’s also when England will regroup after 10 days apart and some golf. The decider awaits. With stats inputs from Shiva Jayaraman

Nottingham Forest make contact to sign £22m defender in first signing for Dyche

Nottingham Forest have now made an approach to sign a “fast” £22m defender, with Sean Dyche replacing Ange Postecoglou in the City Ground hotseat.

Forest make contact to sign centre-back as Dyche joins

Postecoglou’s awful stint as manager came to an end on Saturday, following a 3-0 home defeat against Chelsea, in which Forest once again struggled defensively, having also shipped three goals at home against FC Midtjylland at the beginning of the month.

Evangelos Marinakis perhaps has one eye on the January transfer window, given that the Tricky Trees are at risk of being drawn into a relegation battle, having taken just five points from their opening eight Premier League games.

With the City Ground outfit currently in the bottom three, it would perhaps make sense to bring in a manager with a proven track record of guiding teams to safety, and Dyche has just that from his time at Everton and Burnley.

Dyche has agreed to join Forest on the condition they give him a long-term deal. He is of course well-known for a more defensive style of play than Ange, which means the 54-year-old may be keen to bolster his options at the back in January, and a new centre-back has now emerged as the first target.

That is according to a report from Spain, which reveals Nottingham Forest have now accelerated contact over a move for CA Osasuna defender Enzo Boyomo, who has caught the eye with his spectacular performances for the La Liga side.

Boyomo has a €25m (£22m) release clause included in his contract with the Spanish club, and Osasuna would not consider a sale for any less, given his importance to the side, but there is certainly no shortage of interest from England.

Fulham and Brighton & Hove Albion are also in the race, alongside the Tricky Trees, with the three Premier League clubs said to be in pole position for his signature.

"Fast" Boyomo could be solid addition to Forest's backline

Forest are likely to be happy with their current centre-back options, given that Nikola Milenkovic and Murillo formed a formidable partnership in the Premier League last season, with the duo missing just three games between them and helping secure European qualification.

However, should the new manager be keen to bring in more depth, there are signs the 24-year-old could be a solid signing. When asked to describe his own game after arriving at Osasuna, the Cameroonian said: “I think I’m a calm center-back, with good ball control, and I think I’m also fast.”

Not only that, but the France-born defender is also strong at winning back possession, placing in the 88th percentile for tackles per 90 over the past year, when compared to other centre-backs.

At £22m, Boyomo would be an affordable signing for Forest, who are clearly in need of a fresh injection of quality after a very poor start to the campaign.

Four Potential Dylan Cease Trade Destinations Before MLB Deadline

Dylan Cease could be on the move before the 2025 MLB trade deadline.

That shocking news hit on Wednesday, as ESPN's Buster Olney reported the San Diego Padres might try to get creative as they attempt to compete down the stretch. The Padres have a number of pressing needs as the deadline approaches, with left field and catcher at the top of the list. Given their financial situation, moving some salary while making additions makes a lot of sense.

Cease has ace-level stuff, but has struggled this season. After finishing fourth in NL Cy Young voting in 2024, he has been a different pitcher in 2025. Through 21 starts, the 29-year-old is 3-10 with a 4.59 ERA, a 1.30 WHIP and 144 strikeouts against 42 walks in 113 2/3 innings. The one thing to note here is that Cease's xFIP is 3.30, meaning he's gotten pretty unlucky this year.

The Padres are set to lose Cease at the end of the season as he'll hit free agency. They could, instead, leverage his value given the lack of available starting pitching at this year's deadline and hope a team will bank on Cease's bad luck turning around, or their staff making minor tweaks. San Diego could then use assets acquired to help improve their roster for the stretch run.

What follows is a look at the best fits for Cease as we approach the trade deadline.

Chicago Cubs

Shota Imanaga and Matthew Boyd have been excellent for the Cubs this season, but there remains a Justin Steele-sized hole in the rotation. As a group, the team's starters rank 13th leaguewide in ERA (3.93) and have allowed the third-most home runs (87). Chicago needs to add juice to the starting rotation, and the organization knows Cease intimately. The Cubs selected him in the sixth round of the 2014 MLB draft and Cease wound up being a top prospect before the club dealt him to the Chicago White Sox as part of the ill-fated Jose Quintana trade.

This would be a chance for the Cubs to land Cease back on the North Side to help the team's starting pitching depth as they make a push for an NL Central crown.

New York Yankees

The Yankees' focus is sure to be finding a third baseman, but the pitching also needs help. Max Fried and Carlos Rodon have carried the starting rotation this season with Gerrit Cole and Clarke Schmidt out after undergoing Tommy John surgery. Luis Gil is close to a return, but the rest of the team's starters have been shaky at best and awful at worst. As a group, New York's starters rank seventh in ERA (3.74) but they don't have the rotation depth to win a World Series.

Cease has the kind of elite stuff that can show up in October. While he struggled in the 2024 postseason, his average fastball velocity (97.1 mph) ranks fifth in MLB among starting pitchers and his slider was one of the best pitches in baseball in 2024. A few tweaks could have him dominating hitters again.

New York Mets

The Mets have a really good rotation, led by Kadai Sengal and David Peterson with Sean Manaea healthy again to back them up. But they also have a ticking time bomb on their hands. Converted reliever Clay Holmes has already thrown 108 2/3 innings, which is 38 2/3 more than his previous career high of 70. He has been really good this season, posting an 8-5 record with a 3.48 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP. But so far in July he has an ERA of 5.66, and has surrendered 13 earned runs on 21 hits in 20 2/3 innings. He could be hitting a wall.

If Holmes continues to struggle, New York needs to find another option for the stretch run. Frankie Montas is back, but he has a 4.62 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP this season through five starts. His last two starts have been better but he's risky. Adding another starter feels like a must for the Mets.

Toronto Blue Jays

Like the Mets, the Blue Jays look solid on the surface, with Jose Berrios, Chris Bassitt and Kevin Gausman leading the rotation. But if you look under the hood, the team's starters rank 24th in ERA (4.53). Max Scherzer (5.14 ERA) was sidelined for months thanks to a thumb injury and has yet to look ready for primetime, and Eric Lauer (2.80 ERA) is a low-ceiling lefty who has had some success this season but his 3.82 xFIP says he's getting incredibly lucky.

Cease would be a high-ceiling arm that could add the depth to the rotation Toronto has struggled to find a year.

Rarely-seen Leeds star would be perfect for Joe Rodon’s new role

Leeds United head coach Daniel Farke has proven that he does have the adaptability and coaching nous to guide the team to safety in the Premier League this season.

The German tactician switched to a 3-5-2 formation from his usual 4-3-3 set-up against Chelsea and recorded a 3-1 win against the Blues, before picking up a 3-3 draw with Liverpool in the next game.

Those four points in two games have lifted the Whites out of the bottom three and provided supporters with hope that they can avoid relegation this season.

The biggest winners from Leeds United's formation change

An obvious winner from the change in formation has been centre-forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who has scored three goals in three matches since the system change in the second half against Manchester City.

Like the English striker, Ao Tanaka appears to have been unleashed in this new system. The Japan international scored his first two Premier League goals against Chelsea and Liverpool.

Jaka Bijol has also looked at home at the heart of a back three, where his lack of pace is not exposed, as he has made 12 clearances without being dribbled past a single time, per Sofascore, in the last two matches.

This change in formation could also birth new winners in the squad in the coming weeks, as Farke tries different players in new roles in a bid to perfect the system.

For example, James Justin is one player who could emerge as a winner from the change in shape because he could end up being a perfect option for Joe Rodon’s new role.

Why James Justin could be a winner from Leeds United's new system

The Wales international has been playing as a right-sided centre-back as part of a back three or five, with Bijol in the middle and Pascal Struijk on the left, with Jayden Bogle at right wing-back and Gabriel Gudmundsson at left wing-back.

It worked brilliantly against Chelsea and Liverpool, opposition they were expected to sit back and counter against, but Farke may need to make tweaks to the side when there are games that require Leeds to commit more men forward and push higher up the pitch for longer periods.

With this in mind, playing Justin as the right-sided centre-back, with Rodon either dropping out or replacing Bijol as the central centre-back, could be a way to add variety to their approach, as he could play right-sided centre-back in a three or a five, or he could move over to right-back and Bogle could stay forward as a winger.

As you can see in the table above, the English defender’s versatility would allow for a seemless transition from a 5-3-2, or 3-5-2, to a 4-3-3, or 4-2-3-1, depending on what the game needed.

Farke said that Leeds were “desperate” to sign Justin from Leicester in the summer, yet he has rarely been seen this season. The former England international has only played 169 minutes in the Premier League, per Sofascore, and started one of his seven appearances for the Whites in the division.

Now, this change in shape to a base 3-5-2 formation could provide the defender with an opportunity to come into the team and play a key role, because the right-sided centre-back position could be perfect for him.

Justin, by winning 59% of his ground duels and 55% of his aerial duels (Sofascore) in the Premier League last season, has proven that he can be a solid enough defender in his physical battles, whilst he is a full-back by trade and is reliable in possession.

That is why he could be perfect for this role that would require him to excel as both a third centre-back defensively and as a full-back in possession, should Farke tweak his tactics to allow for this more fluid version of the new system.

A Viduka repeat: Leeds open initial talks to sign midfield "machine"

Leeds United are eyeing up a player from Scotland who could be their next Mark Viduka-type signing.

ByDan Emery 5 days ago

This would leave either Rodon or Bijol on the bench, which may seem harsh after the last two results, but it is a move that could be more effective against teams that are in the bottom half of the table.

Maresca must bench 3/10 Chelsea star who lost the ball 21x vs Leeds

Chelsea dropped points for the second game in a row, suffering a disappointing 3-1 defeat away to Leeds United at Elland Road. The Blues put in a lacklustre performance in a tough environment, and never really managed to get into the game.

It was a poor start for Enzo Maresca’s side, who went 1-0 down inside the first six minutes after a fast start from the Whites. It was slack defending from a corner, with Jaka Bijol making a darting run from the edge of the penalty box and heading home at the near post.

The home side doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time. It was yet more questionable defending from the West Londoners, who let Ao Tanaka have acres of space just outside the area. The Japanese international unleashed a vicious shot which nestled into the back of the net.

Chelsea did pull a goal back, with just 50 minutes on the clock. Pedro Neto managed to shake off his marker and pull to the back post, firing home Jamie Gittens’ cross.

It was all in vain, though, after a defensive error with 18 minutes to go meant Leeds scored a third and sealed the win.

It was a disappointing night for Chelsea, with some particularly worrying performances across the board.

Chelsea’s worst performers vs. Leeds

There were some notable bad showings from a few of Maresca’s men against Leeds. One of those came from Tosin Adarabioyo. It was his error which led to Leeds’ third goal and all but secured the three points for the West Yorkshire side.

The former Fulham man received the ball inside the penalty area and took a heavy touch before playing a five-yard pass back to Robert Sanchez.

It was a frustrating lack of awareness from the Chelsea number four, who put his goalkeeper under pressure from the Leeds press.

Another member of the Chelsea side who struggled was centre-forward Liam Delap. It was a night where the Blues’ number nine seemed isolated. Aside from a snapshot in the second half, which he fired over the crossbar, he did little to trouble the Leeds defence.

One person who was critical of Delap’s performance at Elland Road was Goal journalist Tom Ritchie. He gave the English striker a 4/10 for his efforts, and described him as a ‘bystander’ during the first half.

Those two Chelsea stars were not the only players to struggle on Wednesday night, though.

Maresca could boldly bench £180k-per-week Chelsea star

It was a night to forget for Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez. The Argentine, who captained the Blues at Elland Road, struggled to get any sort of control in midfield.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Perhaps that coincided with the fact that his usual partner in the centre of the park, Moises Caicedo, was suspended.

Chelsea’s number eight was arguably at fault for Tanaka’s goal. He was dispossessed in midfield, facing his own goal, with the ball breaking loose, a situation Leeds capitalised on.

This weighed into the 3/10 rating he got from Ritchie, who said he ‘looked rattled at times’. Indeed, Fernandez’s stats from the game show how much of a tough night it was.

Normally, so good on the ball, the £180k-per-week asset only had a pass accuracy of 77% in the Whites’ half, losing the ball 21 times. He also failed to complete a dribble or a tackle.

After a showing like that, it will be interesting to see if Maresca keeps Fernandez in the starting lineup for their next game against Bournemouth this Saturday. He certainly struggled without Caicedo next to him, and Reece James inverting from right-back.

There are options at his disposal, too. Cole Palmer is now back from injury and played 30 minutes at Elland Road on Wednesday. Whether or not he can play from the start remains to be seen, but he could slot into the side.

Alternatively, James could be brought back into the starting XI and operate in midfield, as he has done this season to a good degree of success.

Fernandez’s performance at Elland Road was disappointing, and it would not be a surprise if he dropped out of the side, especially with options at Maresca’s disposal.

Very Excited Pitcher Incites Brawl Which Ends College Baseball Game After 11 Innings

The Spring Hill College Badgers hosted the Mobile Rams for a single college baseball game on Wednesday. With a three-game series against Moorehouse coming up this weekend for the Badgers and a trip to Blue Mountain University on tap for the Rams, both teams may be down a couple players as Wednesday's game ended with a brawl.

Isidro Jimenez was on the hill for Mobile in the bottom of the 11th with two outs and two runners on when he got Badgers shortstop Seth Williams to pop the ball up behind home plate. With the score tied 5-5 they were headed to the 12th as catcher Clint Smith made the catch to end the inning, Except Jimenez celebrated by screaming a lot in the direction of Williams, who did not appreciate it.

Williams and Jimenez got in each other's faces and teammates came sprinting in from both dugouts and chaos erupted.

The announcer said there were "pure haymakers being thrown" and immediately suggested the game was going to be called. According to the local news report on Wednesday night, the game is now under review by the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. On the team websites the result simply says, "SUSPENDED."

Everton's £45k-p/w talent is now giving "Pienaar 2.0 vibes" under Moyes

Set-pieces are in fashion. The Premier League is pulling away from the silky-ball-playing style championed by Pep Guardiola and mimicked by many, and returning to a state of directness.

In theory, this is perfect for David Moyes’ Everton. But then Moyes’ Everton were beaten at their own game at the weekend, with Tottenham Hotspur capitalising on their newfound structure and organisation, applicable offensively as well as in defensive/build-up shape, with Thomas Frank at the helm.

However, the Premier League is not played out on totally arid land. Moyes, for sure, is increasingly becoming a proponent of expansive football, with flashy wingers

In this, the experienced Scotsman is moulding a squad filled with members sharing traits with former stars, while being very much their own players too.

How Moyes is remaking his former Everton team

The Premier League is unrecognisable from the state it was in when Moyes left Goodison Park for Manchester United to replace Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.

But he is rebuilding Everton with players who are similar to those who walked on Merseyside before them, with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, for example, bringing quality on the ball and dynamism in his midfield role to emulate Mikel Arteta, who was once Moyes’ general in the centre.

Dewsbury-Hall, a summer recruit from Chelsea, certainly adds something new to the mix at the Hill Dickinson, though not perhaps in the same vein as Jack Grealish, whose game-changing ability and one-of-a-kind talent has seen him suggested to be Moyes’ new Wayne Rooney.

One of England’s all-time greats, Rooney might have enjoyed the most glittering heights of his career in Manchester, but he is revered on Merseyside, and in this, Grealish could emulate him.

Some of these comparisons are more overt than others, but there is actually a Toffees talent who has been described as being the Scottish manager’s new version of Steven Pienaar.

Everton's new Steven Pienaar

Everton continue to be one of the most principled and well-drilled sides in the Premier League, but the improvements made since Moyes arrived in January have also seen more enterprise and initiative on the ball.

And while the 63-year-old has looked to make exciting attacking signings, he will feel blessed that Iliman Ndiaye was already in the Blues ranks, with Sean Dyche having overseen the £15m acquisition of the winger from Marseille in July 2024.

Injured for the early phase of Moyes’ much-anticipated return to Liverpool, Ndiaye was, regardless, a shining light for Everton throughout the 2024/25 campaign, finishing as their top scorer with 11 goals across all competitions.

The £45k-per-week talent’s electric pace and skill when on the ball have added quite the dimension, and analyst Ben Mattinson believes the Senegalese “could play for a top six side”.

This may well be the case, for recent transfer rumours have linked the 25-year-old with a move to Tottenham Hotspur. The Londoners would have to pay a premium, to be sure, and other clubs would surely be interested.

Ndiaye isn’t just goals. The French-born winger ranks among the top 10% of Premier League positional peers this season for successful take-ons, the top 2% for ball recoveries and the top 6% for tackles won per 90, as per FBref.

It’s little wonder that he has been hailed by Mattinson as bringing “Steven Pienaar 2.0 vibes” to this new iteration of Everton under Moyes’ wing.

Former Everton star Steven Pienaar

South African Pienaar was quite the Premier League maverick. The left-sided forward scored 25 goals and supplied 40 more for the Scot at Everton, becoming a fan favourite for his talent on the ball and seat-raising qualities.

Ndiaye might actually be that bit better. He needs to make further improvements to his game, no doubt, but brings a sharpness that Pienaar struggled to channel and sustain, never once across the duration of his career, chalking up ten goals in a single campaign.

With the likes of Beto and summer recruit Thierno Barry flattering to deceive at number nine, Ndiaye’s goalscoring ability has never been so important.

He is, as the likes of Jamie Carragher have noted, an “absolute star”.

Watch out Ange: Newcastle "revelation" can help Woltemade hit Isak levels

Newcastle United will host Nottingham Forest at St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon, looking to secure their first Premier League win since the 13th of September, when they beat Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Eddie Howe’s side are coming into the game off the back of a win in the Champions League. They overcame Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise, winning 4-0 thanks to two penalties from Anthony Gordon, a first-half strike from Nick Woltemade and a late goal from Harvey Barnes.

As for their opponents, Forest are yet to win under Ange Postecoglou. They’ve lost four of the six games their new manager has taken charge of, conceding 13 goals. One man who will be hoping to add to that tally on Sunday is Woltemade.

Woltemade’s start to his Newcastle career

It wasn’t necessarily going to be easy for Germany international Woltemade to hit the ground running in a Newcastle shirt. He joined for a club-record £69m, and was essentially replacing Alexander Isak, who would later join Liverpool.

Yet, the 23-year-old has taken to life at St James’ Park like a duck to water. The former Stuttgart striker has only played six games and 338 minutes for the club, but has found the back of the net three times already.

One man who has been impressed with Woltemade’s short Newcastle career so far is club legend Alan Shearer. Talking on The Rest Is Football Podcast, the Premier League’s all-time top goalscorer said “I like what I see” from the German’s performances to date.

Woltemade made the perfect impression on his debut for the club. His first goal came in that aforementioned 1-0 win over Wolves at home last month.

He used his six-foot-seven frame to his advantage, rising highest to meet a well-delivered cross into the box.

Interestingly, the man who delivered that ball into the middle could return to the starting line-up on Sunday to help form an unstoppable partnership against Forest.

Howe’s secret weapon vs. Forest

Magpies boss Howe is certainly not short of options in attack this week against Postecoglou’s side. The Englishman could call upon Gordon and Anthony Elanga once again, who started in the Champions League. Alternatively, Barnes could get the nod from the start.

Another name in contention for a starting berth against Forest has to be Jacob Murphy. It was the 30-year-old who delivered that cross for Woltemade against Wolves to get his first Premier League assist of the season.

He’s coming off the back of a fantastic campaign in 2024/25, in which Jamie Carragher described him as a “revelation” out wide.

In 35 top-flight appearances last season, the London-born attacker scored eight goals and assisted 12.

Not only was he extremely proficient last season, but the former Norwich City star put up some excellent underlying numbers.

For example, he created an average of 1.6 chances and completed 0.9 crosses on average per 90 minutes.

He also struck up an excellent partnership with Liverpool’s new number nine, Isak. According to Transfermarkt, the pair combined for 13 goals in the last two seasons across all competitions, a relationship which proved to be extremely effective for the Magpies.

Already, we’re seeing a similar dynamic play out between Murphy and his new teammate, Woltemade. The winger’s pinpoint cross onto the German striker’s head is a positive start, with the Newcastle record signing showing excellent centre-forward play in the penalty box.

This is a partnership that could hurt Forest on Sunday afternoon. Under Postecoglou, those donning Garibaldi Red have shown vulnerability at the back.

If Howe chooses to unleash Murphy alongside Woltemade, they could look to capitalise on that defensive frailty in a similar way to the goal against Wolves, and the relationship between Isak and Murphy.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

There are certainly positive signs in that sense for Newcastle, and if the winger can get Woltemade playing like Isak, starting from Sunday, that will be a huge benefit.

"My brother earns more" – Ex-Liverpool player reveals shock fall from grace

Whilst many opt for either the Saudi Pro League or the MLS these days, there remains a select few players who have decided to drop down divisions to complete some of the most unexpected moves away from the Premier League.

Premier League Player Power Rankings 2025/26

The best players in the Premier League right now.

We’ve seen players go from Liverpool to the Isthmian League and even watched on as Paul Konchesky joined Billericay Town as a player before becoming the assistant manager there alongside Jamie O’Hara. So, it’s not always the sunny beaches of Miami that come calling. Ocassionally, it’s a cloudy away day at Southend.

Andy Carroll has also made some interesting moves over the years. The 36-year-old has reiterated time and time again that he simply wants to play football rather than chase a higher paycheck. He revealed that “it’s never been a question of money” when asked about his move to fourth-tier French side Girondins Bordeaux.

Now playing at Dagenham & Redbridge in the National League South, the former Newcastle United striker has stayed true to that verdict and has since watched on as others have followed in his path.

Perhaps in the most unexpected move yet, however, one former Liverpool player has now been spotted playing for a United Arab Emirates third division side, having only been a Premier League midfielder two years ago.

Shelvey opens up about shock third-division move

Jonjo Shelvey didn’t quite get the memo of moving to the likes of Saudi Arabia and the UAE for the chance to earn a life-defining amount, did he? In fact, he’s done the complete opposite. The former Liverpool midfielder has made the move – playing for Arabian Falcons in the third division – but revealed that his “brother earns more” working in a London hotel.

To put into context the difference in his earnings from 2023 to now, Shelvey reportedly brought in around £75,000-a-week at Nottingham Forest. Based on his verdict about the current pay in the UAE third division, it would take him around four years to earn that amount these days.

That said, like Carroll, it’s not about the money from Shelvey. He’s enjoyed the highs of his career, from Anfield to St James’ Park, and is now enjoying the quiet life whilst still playing the game he loves.
