Man Utd open talks with 4-2-3-1 manager who Ronaldo thinks is “class”

Manchester United are on the hunt for an interim boss and could now turn to a familiar face to lead them out at Old Trafford for the remainder of the season.

Man Utd begin process of searching for new manager

Ruben Amorim has left the building and Darren Fletcher is now the man in charge for the time being as the Red Devils look forward to the rest of the campaign under new management.

Leaving in acrimonious circumstances, the 40-year-old’s relationship with Jason Wilcox broke down, leaving both parties with no choice but to go their separate ways rather than to reconcile.

In scathing fashion, Manchester United’s official statement on Amorim’s departure read: “With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change.

“This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish. The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.”

Despite the Red Devils sitting sixth in the Premier League table, the process is now underway to find his replacement and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would be keen to return to Old Trafford on a six-month contract as they seek interim cover before a full-time appointment is made in the summer.

Ultimately, a swift hire is needed amid a swift run of Premier League fixtures, and the Red Devils hierarchy may now have someone else in mind to replace Amorim.

Man Utd could turn to Michael Carrick

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, United have now opened talks to hire Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick on an interim basis until the end of the season.

iNews further report that Carrick has been earmarked as a temporary solution to lead the club until the end of the season. He is among the ‘top contenders’ to succeed Amorim and is available immediately after leaving Teeside at the end of last term.

Known to use a 4-2-3-1 formation, he won 63 of his 136 clashes in charge of Boro. The 44-year-old also recorded 24 draws and 49 losses across all competitions and amassed around 1.57 points per game in the Sky Bet Championship.

Previously, Carrick, labelled a “class act” by Cristiano Ronaldo, enjoyed a three-game stint in caretaker charge of Manchester United after Solskjaer’s departure in 2021, emerging victorious on two occasions and drawing one of his three matches.

Short-term fixes are never something clubs would ideally resort to. Nevertheless, the Wallsend-born man would be regarded as a safe pair of hands with an extensive working knowledge of the club, both in a playing and coaching capacity.

Furthermore, the prospect of being able to put himself in the running for a permanent role may be too enticing to refuse, even if it isn’t yet clear whether he would be keen on a return to Old Trafford.

Aston Villa join Man United in race to sign ‘perfect’ and ‘unusual’ centre-back

Aston Villa have joined Man United in the January race to sign a highly-rated centre-back as Unai Emery’s men continue their pursuit of a surprise Premier League title.

Villa have surged into genuine Premier League title contention with a remarkable winning streak that has propelled them within touching distance of leaders Arsenal ahead of tonight’s crucial showdown at the Emirates Stadium.

Emery has masterminded 11 consecutive victories across all competitions, matching the club’s all-time record and positioning Villa just three points behind the Gunners with a victory potentially drawing them level at the summit.

Villa’s latest triumph came at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, where they recovered from a goal down to beat Chelsea 2–1 thanks to inspired second-half substitutions from Emery.

Ollie Watkins hailed his manager as a “tactical genius” following the comeback, which extended Villa’s extraordinary run.

The Midlands club have demonstrated exceptional mental resilience throughout their winning run, earning 18 points from losing positions this season — more than any other Premier League side.

All seven of their most recent league victories have also been sealed by one-goal margins, including comeback wins against Leeds United, Brighton and Chelsea that have defied expectation.

Villa’s defensive solidity has provided the foundation for their challenge, with Emery’s side conceding just 19 goals in 18 matches this season.

Emery has bested former club Arsenal twice in his last two visits to the Emirates, dealing significant blows to the Gunners’ previous title aspirations.

A third successive victory in north London would cement Villa’s credentials as genuine contenders, and they’ve been further boosted by reports that Delcan Rice will miss tonight’s showdown through injury.

Off the field, reports suggest that Villa want to bolster their squad, and they’ve now entered the fray to sign a stellar centre-half from abroad.

Aston Villa join Man United in race for Tarik Muharemovic

According to Italian news outlet Gazzetta Di Modena, Aston Villa have joined the race to sign Sassuolo defender Tarik Muharemovic, with the Premier League title challengers him ahead of a potential summer move.

The 22-year-old has attracted widespread attention across Europe following a string of impressive performances in Serie A, with Villa now competing against English rivals and Italian giants for his signature.

Gazzetta di Modena reports that Villa are amongst three Premier League clubs tracking Muharemovic, alongside Bournemouth and Man United.

The Red Devils dispatched scouts to watch the Bosnian defender in action at the Dall’Ara stadium in Bologna last Sunday, where he delivered another accomplished display and scored his second goal of the campaign.

Muharemovic possesses the characteristics of a ‘modern’ defender that appeal to Premier League clubs, as well as an ‘unusual’ charisma for his age and a profile that is ‘perfect’ for the Premier League.

Bournemouth’s interest stems partly from their successful experience with Dean Huijsen, another defender developed through Juventus’ youth system.

The Cherries signed Huijsen for over £20m before selling him to Real Madrid 12 months later for around treble the price.

However, Inter Milan and Juventus remain frontrunners for Muharemovic’s services.

The Old Lady hold a 50 per cent sell-on clause from his previous departure, which could provide leverage in talks.

Juve are considering using this clause to reduce the asking price for Inter midfielder Davide Frattesi, valued at £25 million, with Muharemovic potentially included as part of an exchange deal.

Newcastle must unearth Lewis Cass

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe was backed by PIF in the January transfer window as a number of players were brought in to the club.

Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn, Matt Targett, Chris Wood and Bruno Guimaraes all came in and it seems likely that they will be active again in the summer to further improve the squad if they can.

However, another source of talent Howe could utilise is the academy set-up at St. James’ Park as he could find promising youngsters to supplement his first-team set-up.

Coloccini 2.0

One player who he needs to take a look at during pre-season later this year is central defender Lewis Cass, who has been on loan at Port Vale this season.

Howe could unearth Fabricio Coloccini 2.0 by bringing the centre-back into the senior fold as he has the potential to grow into the role he played and must give him a chance to impress ahead of the 2022/23 season.

He is set to miss the remainder of the current campaign through injury and this setback could give him the motivation to come back in the summer and nail down a first-team spot with the Magpies. The defender has shown signs of promise on and off the pitch whilst out on loan and is a player worth taking a look at.

On the pitch, he has averaged an impressive SofaScore rating of 6.95 in the EFL Trophy for the Football League side, winning 60% of his duels, whilst also playing 19 times in League Two prior to his knock. This suggests that he was thriving at senior level despite being just 21, which highlights the potential he has to improve further as he gains more experience.

Port Vale supporters club chairman Mark Porter previously lauded the player’s maturity beyond his years, saying:

“He seems a commanding player who, as he grows, could become a leader, a captain. I think he has all the attributes to make it at a higher level. Let’s hope he can start his journey at Port Vale, sign permanently and then who knows where he could go in the next few years.”

These comments suggest that he is captain material and could be a player who goes on to wear the armband in the future for the Toon if he is able to fulfill his potential. Therefore, he could have an impact on and off the pitch with his leadership as he can make a difference with his words during games and around the dressing room/training ground to give his teammates a lift.

This is why he could be the next Coloccini as the Argentine Newcastle icon was the club’s skipper for a number of years and made well over 200 appearances for the side during his time in England, with both players also playing in the same position – centre-back. Cass is a strong defender, based on his statistic for Port Vale, and has the personality to match the Toon legend in his leadership role, which is why he could be the next Coloccini for Howe.

Whilst he may not be ready to come in and immediately be a regular in the Premier League, Howe could expose the youngster to some minutes in the top-flight and ease him in or opt to send him out on loan to a higher level to gain more experience. For example, he could spend a season in the Championship to aid his development and put him in a place where he can come back and make the first-team grade at Newcastle.

Klopp dealt another possible Liverpool blow

Jurgen Klopp may be handed a Liverpool blow as the Reds face potentially being without another player for their Premier League clash with West Ham today .

The Lowdown: Injuries mounting?

Having sit out the midweek FA Cup victory at home to Norwich City, Klopp has already been missing a fair few first team stars through fitness concerns and injuries.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/liverpool-latest-developments/” title=”Liverpool latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, big name duo Roberto Firmino and Thiago Alcantara sat out the contest due to their groin and hamstring problems respectively.

Klopp confirmed the pair will not feature today either with midfield ace Naby Keita, who didn’t take part at Anfield on Wednesday, a doubt to face West Ham.

As more injury news emerges, it appears the Reds could also be without another player.

The Latest: Jones a ‘doubt’…

As confirmed by Klopp, and relayed by Liverpool journalist James Pearce of The Athletic, young midfielder Curtis Jones is also a ‘doubt’ alongside Keita for today’s Merseyside encounter.

The 21-year-old featured against Norwich in mid-week but came off at half-time after complaining of some discomfort in the thigh area.

The Verdict: Potential blow for Klopp…

Jones, a tidy option in the centre, could be a sore miss if he is certainly ruled out for Liverpool this afternoon, especially considering they are already short in the middle.

The English ace has averaged a higher pass accuracy (91%) than any of Klopp’s first teamers with more than one Premier League start – just summing up his reliability in possession and ability to dictate the play midfield.

He’s also the joint-seventh most threatening Liverpool player in terms of shots at goal per 90, averaging the same number as Roberto Firmino (1.3), with pundit Ian Wright having also praised Jones’ ability in the past.

The former Arsenal star heralded Liverpool’s starlet as an ‘unbelievable’ find for the Reds and news of his possible absence will be a dampener amid all the other selection issues.

Wolves can save millions with Connor Ronan

Wolves currently have a number of players in their squad who will see their contracts expire at the end of the season.

One of those is midfielder Joao Moutinho, who has racked up 166 appearances for the Old Gold across all competitions since his arrival from AS Monaco in 2018 in a deal worth a reported £5m.

Despite being a regular figure in Bruno Lage’s side this season, having started 24 of their 28 league games, there’s every chance that this campaign will be the 35-year-old’s last at Molineux unless he puts pen to paper on a new deal before his current one runs out.

If the Portuguese veteran does wave goodbye to the club in the summer, the Old Gold may not necessarily need to immediately go out and dive into the transfer market to sign a replacement for him, as they may already have an ideal long-term figure in their ranks who could potentially break into the team in the potential absence of Moutinho.

Connor Ronan has been on the books at Wolves since he joined their under-18 side back in 2014. Since then, the Irishman has gone on to make 35 appearances across their under-18 and under-23 teams, scoring five goals and providing seven assists but making just 13 senior appearances.

The 24-year-old has also been on quite a few loan deals away from Molineux, the latest of which has taken him to Scottish club St Mirren, where he currently on loan until the end of the season.

During his time with the Premiership side, the midfielder has appeared in 22 of their 30 league games, scored seven goals and provided three assists along the way. That has earned him an overall performance rating of 6.97/10 from WhoScored, making him the Buddies’ third-highest rated player, an indicator as to how well he has been doing in his latest loan spell.

It didn’t take him long to get settled in Paisley either, with St Mirren manager Jim Goodwin describing Ronan’s debut as “outstanding”.

With this in mind, the Irishman could well have put himself in the frame to be a regular senior figure for the Old Gold next season, finally getting his chance to shine and potentially saving the club millions in their potential search for a replacement for Moutinho.

Newcastle learn Diego Carlos latest

Newcastle United have learned the latest information regarding the future of transfer target Diego Carlos, who the Magpies are still keen to sign after a failed attempt in January.

What’s the story?

According to The Mirror, the 28-year-old extended his contract at Sevilla last year, with a £67m release clause inserted into the deal which wasn’t announced by the Spanish club publicly.

Speaking to Spanish outlet Mucho Deporte [via The Mirror], Sevilla chief Monchi revealed: “We’ve renewed [the contracts of] Diego Carlos and [Lucas] Ocampos 14 months ago. We didn’t announce it for strategic reasons.”

Newcastle now find themselves in an even trickier predicament in their attempt to lure the Brazilian defender to Tyneside, with a fee which would substantially beat their record transfer fee paid for Joelinton in 2019 almost certainly required.

Newcastle must swoop for Carlos

Despite the price tag, Newcastle will be seriously backed financially in the summer window by PIF, with the consortium having the deepest pockets in football. Therefore, the £67m release clause shouldn’t immediately prevent the Magpies from doing a deal.

The centre-back, who turns 29 on Tuesday, has been a kingpin for Sevilla this season, with the La Liga outfit still in the title race despite Real Madrid’s hefty eight-point lead at the summit.

Moreover, Los Nervionenses have the Spanish top-flight’s best defence, having conceded just 18 goals in 27 games. Carlos has been a major contributor to that feat, having played in 25 of those matches.

The Brazilian has already made 127 appearances for Sevilla after signing from Ligue 1 outfit Nantes in 2019. However, with Carlos having made 36 appearances in all competitions this term, the 28-year-old is on course for his best season at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium after making 46 and 45 appearances over the previous two seasons respectively.

There is absolutely no doubt that the £52k-per-week defender would be a huge upgrade on any of Newcastle’s current defensive options, which will certainly be needed in the summer.

Despite their excellent form of late, the Geordies still have the fourth-worst defence in the English top flight, having conceded 47 goals in 27 matches.

In fairness, the addition of Dan Burn from Brighton in January has made a difference, with the Blyth-born centre-back conceding just three goals in five league appearances for the Magpies.

However, despite being nearly 30, the Newcastle colossus is in just his third season of regular Premier League football and doesn’t have the same pedigree as Diego Carlos, who has plenty of Champions League experience as well as regularly playing top-flight football at a high level.

Along with Burn, the likes of Fabian Schär, Ciaran Clark, Jamal Lascelles and Federico Fernandez aren’t of the standard that Newcastle want to reach under the new ownership, making the Brazilian a significant upgrade on Eddie Howe’s current defensive options.

Liverpool: Robertson stole show v Arsenal

Liverpool heaped the pressure on Premier League leaders Manchester City last night, with a brilliant 2-0 away win against an in-form Arsenal side, with goals from Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino enough to secure victory and move the Reds within one point of top spot.

However, it was Scottish left-back Andy Robertson who was man-of-the-match, earning a match rating of 8.2 after another typical high-energy, aggressive performance which resulted in him earning an assist.

The former Hull City and Dundee United star completed 78% of his passes as well as having an impressive 105 touches of the ball – more than anyone else on the pitch as Liverpool looked to exploit the left flank as often as possible, with the defender also completing two crosses.

On the defensive end, Robertson was solid as usual, making four tackles, four clearances and three interceptions as he pocketed Bukayo Saka all game – with the Reds star not being dribbled past once and winning all five of his ground duels too.

It was another fantastic performance from the best left-back in the world, with the last time he dropped a match rating in the Premier League lower than 7.0 was back in December during Liverpool’s 3-1 win against Newcastle, and his form could prove crucial in the fight for the league title.”I don’t like games in hand much, I would rather points. I would still rather be in Man City’s position,” Robertson said after the match.”They are a point ahead. They are a fantastic team, one of the best in the world. Then it’s a sprint to the finish line.”We’re in the race so we need to focus on what we’re doing. We still have to go to their place.”Among full-backs in Europe’s top five leagues and continental competitions, Robertson ranks in the top 5% for carries into the final third per game (2.59), top 2% for touches per 90 (88.93) and top 2% for goal-creating actions per 90 (0.51) over the last year. His quality and ability will be massive for the team heading towards the business end of the season, as Jurgen Klopp’s men could still secure the elusive quadruple – which would arguably be the greatest achievement by an English team in modern history. In other news: Liverpool already have dream Gomez heir in “complete” 20 y/o who plays like Hummels

Arsenal rival Villa in Coutinho race

Arsenal will compete with Aston Villa for the signature of Philippe Coutinho, according to Spanish reports (via Sport Witness).

The lowdown

Villa loaned in Coutinho from FC Barcelona in January and negotiated an option to buy for £33million in the summer.

They will, however, still have to agree a contract with the player, who will reportedly need to take a pay cut to move to Villa Park permanently.

Villa have already opened talks with the Spanish giants, 90Min claim, presumably over the precise structure of the deal.

The latest

The report from Spain states that Coutinho’s performances in claret and blue have ‘aroused the interest’ of other teams, and Arsenal are among them.

The Gunners have ‘already been in contact’ with the Brazilian’s entourage to make their admiration known.

Coutinho is expected to make a decision on where he’ll be playing his football in May.

The verdict

Coutinho has been fantastic for Villa so far, with Steven Gerrard hailing him as a ‘joy to watch’.

He’s scored four times and provided three assists in his 10 appearances, directly contributing to a goal every 111 minutes.

His average WhoScored rating of 7.28/10 is the highest in the Villa squad, ahead of the likes of John McGinn (7.17) and Matty Cash (6.98).

But who would he choose if it came down to Villa or Arsenal?

Well, Arsenal may be able to offer him a larger salary. Their current wage ceiling (£200,000 per week) is significantly larger than that of Villa (£120,000).

But, on the other hand, Coutinho knows that he’s likely to have a starting role nailed down at Villa (Gerrard has selected him for the last nine).

And at Arsenal, he’d be competing with Martin Odegaard, currently ‘in the form of his life’ (in the words of Sky Sports’ Micah Richards).

In other news, links to a Manchester United have emerged.

When Nottingham Forest wanted James Justin

Nottingham Forest are currently without first choice left-back Max Lowe, who is out until the end of April with a groin injury, leaving 32-year-old midfielder Jack Colback to fill in at that spot as they seek a spot in the Championship play-off places.

However, if the East Midlands club acted on their interest five years ago in James Justin, they would have not only have had a 19-year-old Premier League potential defender on their hands back then, they would have had a more than adequate replacement for Lowe right now too.

According to The Sun back in 2017, Forest tabled a £1m bid for the then-Luton Town star, with former manager Mark Warburton of the belief that he was ready for Championship football.

However, that move failed to materialise, and Justin remained with the Hatters for another two seasons, helping them to extraordinary back-to-back promotions, leaving them with Championship football when he joined Leicester City in 2019 for a fee worth around £6m.

Establishing himself in his first season as one of the league’s biggest bargains that season, he ranked among full-backs in the Premier League across his debut campaign in the top flight in the top 4% for successful pressure percentage per 90 (36.5%), top 9% for successful dribble percentage per 90 (76.5%) and top 7% for ball recoveries per 90 (11.12).

Now aged 24 with a market valuation of £15.3m, a whopping 1430% more than the £1m fee Forest offered, the defender has become a versatile option for the Premier League side. He is able to fill in at both left-back and right-back when required, as well as possessing the intelligence and ability to play as a defensive midfielder.

Once described by Journalist Liam Canning as “class” and “first rate”, the Foxes full-back has begun to re-establish himself as a key man within Brendan Rodgers’ squad, having just returned from a cruciate ligament rupture injury, which kept him out of action for 331 days.

It’s clear that Forest made a monumental mistake not to sign Justin from Luton when he was a bargain pick-up for the club, and even if he couldn’t have helped the club towards promotion, he would have had an excellent re-sell rate that the Championship side have missed out on.

Chelsea make contact to sign “special” attacker wanted by Bayern Munich & PSG

Chelsea have now made contact with the agents of a “special” attacker, who’s also being targeted by Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich.

Blues looking to sign new attacker despite Pedro's fine form

Joao Pedro has proven to be a solid signing for the Blues, with the Brazilian grabbing his fifth Premier League goal of the season in the 2-2 draw against Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon.

The former Brighton man was given the nod at centre-forward at St. James’ Park, as Liam Delap remains sidelined due to a shoulder injury, but he has also regularly featured in the number 10 role, showcasing his versatility.

With Cole Palmer recently returning from injury, and scoring in the 2-0 victory against Everton earlier this month, Enzo Maresca appears to be well-stocked in attacking midfield, but the west Londoners are now stepping up their move for an up-and-coming talent.

That is according to a report from TEAMtalk, which states Chelsea are now becoming increasingly keen on Genk star Konstantinos Karetsas, with the youngster likely to leave the Belgian club at some point in 2026.

PSG and Bayern Munich are also in the race for Karetsas, so there could be fierce competition for his signature, but the Blues are now stepping up their approach, having told the 18-year-old’s camp they want to bring him to west London.

The teenager is regarded as one of the world’s best young talents, and he is capable of playing anywhere in the final third, although he has predominantly featured as an attacking midfielder throughout his career to date.

That is because Maresca may find it difficult to involve Karetsas a lot to begin with, given that he already has Palmer and Pedro to choose from, but on a long-term basis, Karetsas could be a fantastic addition to the squad.
