There has been a suggestion this week that Arsenal would be prepared to pay up to £60 million for a very highly-rated striker, as manager Mikel Arteta scours the market for another attacking option.
Arteta wants striking partner for Havertz at Arsenal
The Gunners have been linked with a new striker ever since the beginning of this summer window.
Club reply as Arsenal make opening bid to sign "creative" player this week
It’s been tabled in the last two days.

Arsenal did attempt to sign Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig earlier this summer, as did Man United and Chelsea, but the Slovenia international starlet rejected all three proposals to remain at his current club and sign a contract extension.
Arteta apparently wants a striking partner for Havertz, despite the German finishing his debut campaign at the Emirates Stadium very strongly with 14 goals and seven assists in 51 appearances across all competitions.
A prolific new marksman has long been viewed as the final missing piece of Arteta's jigsaw, with former Arsenal star Bacary Sagna explaining that they need a target man in the mould of ex-star Olivier Giroud.
"Arsenal need to be stronger and be more attacking going forward," the former full-back told Paddy Power (via The Metro).
"This season, scoring goals was a problem for them. They could add a proper striker – a number nine. Arsenal are playing well but they can improve on crossing the ball – they hold the ball well generally, but occasionally they’ll need to cross it more.

"I’m happy with Gabriel Jesus, as long as he stays fit, but they still have to have cover. I would go for someone like Olivier Giroud, someone physical who can hold the ball quite well and support the team if they’re struggling.
"They need someone who can wait in the box and help out offensively and defensively."
Arsenal reportedly maintain a loose interest in Ivan Toney of Brentford for the role, while Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres has also attracted their attention this summer.
Suggestion Arsenal would pay up to £60m for Gyokeres
Journalist Steve Kay, speaking on KS1TV (via The Boot Room), suggests Arsenal would pay up to £60 million to sign Gyokeres from Sporting – and he made the claim when discussing their interest in Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.

"If he (Guimaraes) became available, similarly to Gyokeres, at about £50-60m, I’m sure he’d be someone we’d be looking at, but at the price they want, I think they more or less immediately said no," said Kay.
The Sweden international's contract includes an £86 million release clause, with the "unplayable" striker scoring 43 goals in just 50 appearances across all competitions last season.

BCB director Jalal Yunus, who will travel with the team, was also among those vaccinated. Some more of the cricketers who are travelling to New Zealand will be administered the vaccine on February 20, and the BCB will make arrangements for more vaccines to be administered, if needed, after the tour.Speaking afterwards, Iqbal admitted to being apprehensive about taking the vaccine to start with. “The thing about vaccinations is that if you know how helpful it is for you then I think your fear will go. I will not deny that I was afraid,” he said. “I was not sure whether to take it or not. But after talking to the BCB and finding out that it is normal to have symptoms, it made sense to take it.”The app was also launched at the same time in the presence of health minister Zahid Maleque and BCB president Nazmul Hassan, and Sarkar was the first to use it.Ahmed urged people from his country to get the vaccination done at the earliest. “I am feeling quite good after being inoculated,” he told . “There’s no physical problem yet. I would like to thank the honourable prime minister and BCB for making it so easily available for us. I urge everyone to be vaccinated. The app has also made it a simpler process.”More than one million Bangladeshis have taken the vaccine since the government rolled it out earlier this month.

Change is afoot at St. James' Park. Co-owners Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi have sold their shares in Newcastle United and will leave after playing instrumental parts in the PIF-backed takeover in 2021.
Paul Mitchell has also been confirmed as United's new sporting director after the protracted Dan Ashworth saga drew to a close at the start of the month. Last month's PSR concerns have been combatted shrewdly with sales that have swerved the gnawing sense that one of the club's top talents needed to be sacrificed, instead, such linchpins stay put.

Eddie Howe is now focused on strengthening his squad, tweaking and tinkering to chart a course back into the Champions League. The 2023/24 campaign was ruined by injuries but now the Magpies can start afresh, and while a spread of positions require attention, sights have been fixed on a Premier League forward… again.
Newcastle lining up new striker
As per Football Insider, Newcastle are prepared to return with a fresh bid to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who had been nearing a move to Tyneside one month ago.
Yankuba Minteh heading toward Goodison was a crucial part of the negotiations but Brighton & Hove Albion prevailed in that race, though Callum Wilson's possible departure could see space freed up for the rangy striker's signing.
Indeed, Newcastle are pushing to sell Wilson for £10-15m, and should interested suitors West Ham United step up their interest, cogs could fall into place nicely.
What Dominic Calvert-Lewin would bring to Newcastle
Calvert-Lewin has been one of the Premier League's most prominent centre-forwards for several years now, an excellent striker with aerially dominant properties that would make him the perfect foil for the dynamic skills of Alexander Isak.
Beleaguered by injuries over the past few years, Calvert-Lewin found his feet toward the end of the 2023/24 campaign, scoring four goals and adding an assist across his past seven appearances, with his revived physicality, if sustained, capable of leading him to a future laden with goals.
Hailed as a "high-level striker" by former boss Frank Lampard, the 27-year-old ranks among the top 6% of centre-forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for aerial duels won and clearances made per 90, as per FBref, something that would allow him to serve as a focal point, with Anthony Gordon and the like bouncing off his presence.

Recent injury-hit years have swiped the 6 foot 2 star's prolificness from him but the signs of a resurgence were discernible last term, with The Athletic's Patrick Boyland even remarking that he was "like the DCL of old" during the Toffees' Merseyside Derby victory over Liverpool in April.
Newcastle could unburden the England international of the weight of being the star man up front, instead promising a shared role as Isak's understudy – allowing him to find his feet and rediscover his boots, thus moving back into the ascendancy.
He'd be a perfect fit, if, indeed, he manages to stay fit. Calvert-Lewin is even recorded to have striking stylistic similarities to that of Ivan Toney, so could mark a sense of vindication on Tyneside regarding that one.
How Calvert-Lewin compares to Ivan Toney
Toney cut his teeth at Newcastle but was sold to Peterborough in League One for all of £350k after a series of loan stints and four senior showings in black and white.
The "remarkable" forward, as dubbed by Brentford manager Thomas Frank, has since gone from strength to strength and is now a fully-fledged England international and one of the Premier League's deadliest marksmen, having scored 36 goals and supplied 11 assists across 83 appearances in the division since the Bees' resounding promotion – a term that saw Toney harvest 33 goals in the second tier.
Bold and bullish, the 6 foot 1 talent is a deadly marksman and creative besides, boasting sharp link-up qualities that have led his Three Lions teammate Declan Rice to hail him for being "kind of like Harry Kane in a way where he's not only an out-and-out striker, he's a playmaker as well."
As per FBref, Toney was one of the most similar forwards to Calvert-Lewin in the Premier League last season, himself ranking among the top 3% of forwards last term for interceptions made and the top 17% for aerial duels won per 90.
Brentford's Ivan Toney
Calvert-Lewin is also deceptively creative, crafting four big chances for his peers last season despite being limited to only 26 top-flight starts. He's something of a "monster" up front – according to football talent scout Jacek Kulig – but he's also a multi-skilled player.
Newcastle's overall play could also free up greater opportunity for the Evertonian striker, who was left isolated on occasion last season. The Magpies averaged 52.2% possession in the Premier League last season, striking 14.5 shots and completing 9.3 dribbles per game (WhoScored).
Everton, conversely, averaged 40% of possession per match last year, taking less shots (13.3) and completing fewer dribbles (7.3) on average.
They did eclipse Newcastle in aerial duels won per game though (12 vs 18.3), suggesting that Calvert-Lewin's skyward strengths could add an invaluable dimension to the side, all the while using their superiority on the ball to put him in better positions.
Newcastle might not be likely to reclaim Toney's services any time soon, but in Calvert-Lewin, Howe could sign a striker with all the tools to add depth and dynamism to the frontline, gearing it up for an exciting campaign.

The quick’s five-for won the day for the hosts despite Brendan Taylor’s fighting century

Pakistan withstood a stunning fightback led by Brendan Taylor to hang on for a thrilling win in the first ODI against Zimbabwe in Rawalpindi on Friday. Shaheen Afridi was the architect of the victory, carving chunks out of the Zimbabwean batting line-up when the others appeared to have run out of ideas, and finishing with yet another five-wicket haul, while Wahab Riaz chipped in with four wickets to stop the visiting sides 26 short. The result might appear somewhat routine, but it was anything but guaranteed when Taylor was at the crease, on his way to stroking a glorious century that, alongside a fighting half-century from Wesley Madhevere, took Zimbabwe to the brink of a famous win. But, as the final five overs loomed and the asking rate began to creep up, Madhevere chopped Riaz on to end a 119-run fifth-wicket partnership. Taylor was undone by a slower Afridi delivery soon after, and things unravelled quickly thereafter.Zimbabwe were bowled out for 255, and in a game of fine margins, Pakistan’s wagging tail earlier on made all the difference.Set 282 to win, Zimbabwe looked to have a structured sense of pacing the chase, going hard in the powerplay at debutant Haris Rauf, undeterred by the loss of Brain Chari in the first over. While Afridi, who was tremendous throughout the innings whenever called upon, gave them little to attack, some loose deliveries from the other end were all they needed, and Chamu Chibhabha, followed by Craig Ervine and Taylor, made the most of the fielding restrictions, speeding to 56 in the powerplay. It was well over what Pakistan had managed, and set Zimbabwe the base from which they moulded their chase.Brendan Taylor drives on the up•PCB
While Taylor looked comfortable for much of the innings, Ervine found himself flustered by Pakistan’s tightness in the middle overs, and a rash reverse sweep spelt the end of him. Sean Williams never looked up to the mark on the day, meaning 20-year-old Madhevere was tasked with being the support act for Taylor. He did that with immense class, showcasing an attractive batting technique and, when things got hairier, a certain steel that bodes well for the career that lies ahead of him. The punches off the back foot against pace were especially eye-catching, and out of nowhere, it seemed, he had brought up a half-century.By this time, Taylor had found the zone he occasionally enters, which marks him out as one of the most inventive shotmakers of this generation. The uppercut off the short ball was nigh-on perfect each time, while a scoop over short third-man off a 149kph Afridi yorker is destined to be one of the shots of the series, and when he brought up his 11th ODI hundred, Zimbabwe looked like they were ahead of the chase. That’s when Riaz returned to show why he still remains a firm part of Pakistan’s plans, his sheer pace accounting for Madhevere before the Afridi show took over. Once Sikandar Raza was felled by Riaz, Afridi took charge against the tail, removing Carl Mumba to complete a five-for he richly deserved. By this time, the game was done, and Pakistan would walk away with a win, and a bit of a scare.Earlier, Pakistan won the toss and batted, but the rustiness of not having played an ODI for 13 months was evident. They stuttered their way to 281 for 8, getting there in the end thanks to some untidiness on the part of the visitors at the death after an exceptionally disciplined bowling performance for the best part.Imam-ul-Haq and Haris Sohail finish up at the same end•AFP via Getty Images
Half-centuries from Imam-ul-Haq and Haris Sohail kept Pakistan chugging along without ever really moving through the gears. Zimbabwe picked up wickets quietly from time to time, and, all of a sudden, Pakistan found themselves six down for 205, and facing a battle to post a total their bowlers would feel comfortable defending. They had opted for the more circumspect Abid Ali in place of Fakhar Zaman at the top, and as such, while they made a solid start, there was no evidence of the powerplay aggression that has become the norm for successful ODI sides. It helped Zimbabwe that Richard Ngarava and Blessing Muzarabani – back after two years away from the national side – were very disciplined, giving little by way of extras or loose deliveries to either batsman. And when Ali tried to play across the line to Mumba, he was trapped in front. What would – or should – disappoint Pakistan is their overall approach. For all the talk of this series being the beginning of the next four-year ODI cycle, there are few signs that with it has come a change in their philosophical approach to the format, and the lack of intent in the first ten overs was followed by similar wariness through the middle overs. Only Babar Azam tried to up the ante, but crucially for Zimbabwe, he wasn’t at the crease for long, a poke at an outswinger from Muzarabani bringing about his downfall.Thereon, Zimbabwe were on top as Pakistan went into a shell that they really should have stayed away from for much of the innings. Imam and Sohail began a rebuild that ended in a mix of farce and comedy when they found themselves at the same end, both diving to get ahead of the other and survive at the keeper’s end while Raza whipped off the bails at the other. Imam was the unlucky one, allowing Sohail to anchor the innings as Iftikhar Ahmed and Mohammad Rizwan came and went.Despite all that, Pakistan ended with a decent total, with the late sloppiness from the Zimbabwe death bowlers proving decisive. At 203 for 6, getting bowled out was a keen possibility, but Imad Wasim and Faheem Ashraf ensured a sharp uptick in runs that seemed to ward off any Zimbabwean ideas of aggression, sending them into run-preservation mode instead. That allowed Pakistan to get to their final tally, setting up a win that might provide them more relief than delight.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Enciso has made five substitute appearances for Brighton thus far this season but has been included in Paraguay's squad to play both Ecuador and Venezuela. Both games are 2026 World Cup qualifiers – Paraguay have not qualified for the tournament since 2010, when they reached the quarter-finals in South Africa.
WHAT ENCISO SAID
Enciso told Del Paraguay: “My head hurts. I almost died, I fainted on the plane. I was powerless, I didn’t eat or sleep well. At one point I got up to go to the bathroom and I felt like I was falling.
“A guy grabbed me and took me to the front. He made me drink coke and a Japanese soup and that did me good.”

Seemingly Enciso has recovered and is aiming to play for Paraguay this week. Once he returns to England, Brighton play Newcastle on October 19.
Wolverhampton Wanderers have enjoyed a successful season in the Premier League under Gary O'Neil, 13th with one match to play. Among relegation favourites at the season's beginning, the Old Gold have quietly triumphed.
With the final fixture to be contested at Anfield in what will be an emotionally charged affair on Jurgen Klopp's final match as Liverpool manager, Wolves bosses will likely have turned one eye to the summer transfer window.
“So if we go into next season with the same weaknesses as now, we have issues. If we’re able to improve them and get the levels back up to where they need to be, then we won’t.
“There’s no reason next season has to start slowly because this season has finished slowly. We’ll need to do some real big work in the summer.”
Wolves boss Gary O'Neil
These are recent words from O'Neil, who has acknowledged that his threadbare squad have run out of steam. Wolves can take pride in their 2023/24 campaign but work, indeed, needs to be done during the off-season.
Wolves appear to be lining up an exciting addition already…
Wolves eyeing shrewd summer signing
According to reports from Spain, Wolves are interested in securing a deal for Athletic Bilbao winger Alex Berenguer, with the report stating that the player has offers on the table from a host of Premier League sides.
Alex Berenguer
Berenguer is out of contract at the end of the season, and while the Copa del Rey champions are fighting to tie their star down to a new deal, Brentford, Crystal Palace and Leicester City hope to beat the Molineux side to the Spaniard's signature.
Alex Berenguer's season in numbers
Bilbao might be keen on extending Berenguer's stay in Basque Country but given that he's only started 13 La Liga matches in 2023/24, the 28-year-old might feel that the time is right to try his hand elsewhere.
Alex Berenguer for Athletic Bilbao
Despite his sporadic inclusion in the starting line-up, Berenguer has offered an impressive return, scoring six goals and supplying two assists.
The versatile winger also bagged the solitary strike as Bilbao defeated Atletico Madrid at the Metropolitano Stadium in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final tie. They would go on to win at home before defeating Mallorca on penalties in the final, with Berenguer holding his nerve to score the winning strike in the shootout.
In the Spanish top flight, as per Sofascore, the 5 foot 9 ace has notably created six big chances for his team despite only receiving a starting berth on 13 occasions – this showcases his creativity and the impact he could have in Wolverhampton.
Moreover, as per FBref, he ranks among the top 21% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals scored, the top 26% for tackles, the top 3% for blocks and the top 13% for aerial duels won per 90, emphasising his defensive commitment and determination.
This makes him an attractive option for a team such as Wolves, who have their share of financial difficulties but could pull off a coup in bringing this talented wide forward to the fold on a free transfer this summer.
How Alex Berenguer would fit in at Wolves
Berenguer has been regarded as a "key figure" at his Spanish outfit by reporter Pablo Casado, and while he doesn't always start games, he is effective and influential and would offer much to the Wolves attack.
The Athletic's Steve Madeley has suggested that Pablo Sarabia's future at Molineux is 'less certain' as he prepares to enter the final year of his contract, but more pertinently, Berenguer is likely being targetted to fill in the hole that Pedro Neto might leave.
Pedro Neto
There's an understanding within the Wolves walls that the dynamic Portuguese winger will be allowed to leave the club this summer, with Arsenal known admirers for the player – as confirmed by none other than Fabrizio Romano – who could leave for a fee upwards of £60m.
Neto, aged 24, is a brilliant player, ranking among the top 1% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists and the top 6% for progressive carries per 90 and being heralded as a "beast" of a player by his Liverpool-based compatriot Diogo Jota.
Injuries have formed the crux of his struggles under O'Neil this season but Neto has still made quite the impression, racking up nine assists from only 18 Premier League starts, averaging two key passes, 1.9 dribbles and 4.2 ball recoveries per game.

Replacing such a potent attacking threat will certainly not be easy but Berenguer plays a similar game and has demonstrated creative expertise this season.
The £28k-per-week Spaniard could not carry the burden of being Neto's successor alone but he would definitely be able to emulate some of the Wolves sensation's finest attributes, lessening the pain of a fantastic player's departure.
Not only is he creative and sharp with his playmaking skills but he has offered an impressive goal threat. Moreover, Berenguer has been praised as a "versatile football" who "makes the squad more complete" by former manager Gaizka Garitano, something Neto too has mastered across the frontline.
Wolves keen to sign "very talented" player for O'Neil ahead of Liverpool
The Old Gold will face some stiff competition for the player.
ByJosh Barker May 12, 2024
Overall, Berenguer would not succeed in compensating for a player such as Neto – with the fleet-footed Portugal star destined for greatness if he can keep a lid on injury difficulties.
But he's a talented and experienced player in his own right and there's no question that he would prove to be an astute piece of business for a Wolves side that are fighting tooth and nail to tread water above the danger zone and continuing a wonderful marriage with Premier League football.
