Chelsea could sign a cheaper striker than Victor Osimhen this summer.

If there is one thing that has been cause for concern for Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea side this season, it is their form in front of goal.

The Blues have scored the eighth most in the Premier League this season, with 47, but have missed 51 out of the 82 big chances they have created.

Pochettino has trialled different players up front this season, including summer signings Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer. Jackson is still finding his feet in the Premier League, with Palmer better suited to a deeper role or one on the right wing.

With hundreds of millions of pounds spent under new owner Todd Boehly since his takeover in 2022, it will be somewhat frustrating for Chelsea fans that they are still struggling in front of goal so much.

Two strikers Chelsea could sign this summer

With Pochettino’s side reportedly desperate to land a new number nine this summer, there are two frontrunners on the list.

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen is one option for Chelsea having been linked so regularly all season and crucially, the Nigeria international is already confirmed to be leaving the club this summer. However, a new name has been thrown into the mix of late; Sporting striker Victor Gyokeres.

Sporting CP strikerViktor Gyokeres.

According to Italian journalist Marco Fallisi, Chelsea, along with Arsenal, are the English clubs who could provide competition to AC Milan for Gyokeres’ signature next summer. It's stated that the Premier League pair are at the front of the queue.

The reports suggest the Swede could cost just £43m, a great deal cheaper than the £100m plus that Osimhen is being touted with.

How Gyokeres and Osimhen Compare

In the 2022/23 season, Osimhen was one of the world’s deadliest strikers, scoring 31 goals in 39 games in all competitions, in a historic Scudetto-winning season for Napoli.

Napoli star Victor Osimhen

Incredibly, Gyokeres has already overtaken the Napoli striker’s tally from last season in the same number of games. Sporting’s talisman is currently on 36 goals in 39 games, whilst also hitting double figures in assists. As the stats suggest, Gyokeres is one of the deadliest strikers in Europe this term.

The Sweden international, who has been described as a ‘powerhouse’ by football analyst Ben Mattinson on X, is a very physical striker, who uses that to his advantage.

Gyokeres’ hold-up play stands out, and he uses his 6 foot 1 frame to dominate opponents, able to drop deeper and hold up the ball before spraying passes forward into the path of teammates who have made runs in behind. His 14 assists in 2023/24 compared to Osimhen's measly tally of four stands out in this regard.

Indeed, in comparison, Osimhen tends to stay further forward, doing most of his work in and around the penalty area.

This is partly down to his relationship with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia; the tricky Georgian winger developed a superb partnership with Osimhen last season and loves to whip crosses into the box for the 25-year-old to attack.

Chelsea may already have their own Osimhen who's outscoring Jackson

Pochettino could have his very own Osimhen out on loan at this current moment in time

ByRoss Kilvington Mar 23, 2024

One thing that can be said about both strikers is that their penalty box instinct is second to none. Both players can sniff out chances from nowhere, able to follow in for rebounds or get on the end of crosses with ease, the mark of a top striker.

They have plenty of touches in the opposition penalty area too. Gyokeres averages 8.82 per 90 minutes, ranking him in the top 1% of strikers in Europe. In comparison, Osimhen averages 7.30 per 90 minutes, placing him in the top 5%.

viktor-gyokeres-transfer-gossip-leeds-united-farke-aston-villa-cameron-archer

If Chelsea are looking for a pure finisher in the penalty box, you cannot go wrong with either option. With that being said, Gyokeres may well prove to be the best option if they are looking for a more complete centre-forward who can both create and score.

Both players are the same age, 25, although Gyokeres might prove to be cheaper than the £100m Osimhen. It could well be down to Pochettino's preference as to which striker they will try and sign this summer.

Rashid Khan seeks tougher opposition for Afghanistan

Afghanistan captain urges frequent and longer tours of Bangladesh, more matches against the likes of England and Australia and more focus on Tests and ODIs

Mohammad Isam in Dhaka25-Sep-2019

AFP

Frequent and longer tours of Bangladesh, and more matches against stronger sides like England, New Zealand and Australia, are on Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan’s wishlist as his side seeks to improve in all three formats.Afghanistan ended their tour of Bangladesh by sharing the T20I tri-series trophy with the home side following a washed-out final in Dhaka. The next bilateral series between Bangladesh and Afghanistan is scheduled for March 2022, and comprises only three ODIs and two T20Is. In the current FTP, Afghanistan do not have a bilateral series against England, and will play two Tests and three ODIs against Australia over the next three years. Their only bilateral games against New Zealand will be in the form of an ODI series just before the 2023 50-over World Cup. Against Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka, the bilateral contests are all limited-overs matches.”We should have longer series against Bangladesh, like have the main focus on 50 overs and Test matches,” Rashid said at a press conference. “Cricket boards should think about it. There should be a three-match Test series. There’s more room to learn and have different experiences. More 50 overs and Tests would be better for both nations.”Rashid said Afghanistan hardly got chances to play quality fast bowling against sides like Ireland and Scotland, and the lack of experience had hurt Afghanistan’s chances at the World Cup. He also urged the respective boards to schedule more Tests and ODIs against Bangladesh, rather than T20Is.”We have played only twice against Australia, New Zealand and England in the last five years [all in World Cups]. If we played more against them, we could have known their strengths and weaknesses. It should be looked into. The best example is Bangladesh. They played a lot against South Africa and ended up having the best result against them in the World Cup. If we want to be a good side, we should play more against the top sides. Not one match in four years. These teams have four fast bowlers who bowl 140-plus. We play against Scotland and Ireland, and they hardly have a 140-plus bowler.”Rashid wants Afghanistan to improve and be good enough to eventually play in the World Test Championship. “We are quite sad not to be part of the World Test Championship, but I think all we can do right now is play good Test cricket, to prove that decision wrong. But at the same time, you can’t put a side in the championship who have played only three Tests,” he said.Rashid enjoyed a good tour of Bangladesh, his first series since his appointment as Afghanistan captain in all three formats. He took 11 wickets in Afghanistan’s first away Test win in Chattogram, where he also scored a crucial half-century, and followed that up with six wickets in the T20I tri-series. With Afghanistan now scheduled to play a ‘home’ series against West Indies in November, Rashid said he would continue to bowl the same way in all three formats, remaining mindful of not putting himself under undue pressure by expecting wickets too often in the longest format.”I never brought any difference in my bowling in any format. I try to do what I am capable of,” he said. “I don’t want to bring any changes to my bowling. If I bring a bit of change, I think it will affect my bowling.”I always had one thing in mind in the Test match, that there will be a time when I won’t get a wicket for 25 overs. There will be a time when I get three wickets in one over. Rather than putting extra pressure on myself, I should be mentally ready for this sort of thing.”Rashid revealed that spin-bowling greats Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne had advised him not to bowl slower and not to bring any major changes to his bowling, as it is his pace that deceives batsmen.”I asked Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne, superstars of Test cricket, what should my mindset be in a Test match. They both told me that I shouldn’t change myself, and be cool and calm in every situation,” he said. “[They said that I should] just focus on bowling in the right line and length, rather than bring down my speed. They said that the quicker you bowl, it deceives the batsmen.”

'We call off the strike and will return to playing' – Shakib Al Hasan

Two days after they announced they would boycott all cricket activities, they met BCB officials and made some progress

Mohammad Isam23-Oct-2019Bangladesh’s cricketers, who went on strike on Monday, will return to action after officials from the BCB and the players’ association assured them that nearly all their demands would be met. Shakib Al Hasan, the Test and T20I captain who led the cricketers’ movement, however, said that the players would only be satisfied when all they had asked for was addressed. The impasse between the board and the players ended at close to midnight on Wednesday, by which time both parties had been in discussion for nearly two hours. The players agreed to the meeting after holding discussions among themselves in a hotel, in between holding a press conference where they added two more demands: 1. the BCB must share a percentage of their revenue with them, and 2. it should also ensure equal pay for women cricketers. There were reports on Wednesday that BCB chief Nazmul Hassan and director Naimur Rahman had met the country’s prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, who had summoned Mashrafe Mortaza as well to know more about the situation. It is felt that after her intervention, the BCB backed off from their hardline stance and agreed to compromise.Hassan said the board had not been made aware of the two new demands until a few hours ago, but that it will fulfill the original 11. Shakib added that the Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh [CWAB] had also agreed to hold fresh elections, where players are expected to vote for the office bearers.”As Papon [Hassan] said, it was a fruitful discussion,” Shakib said. “He and the rest of the directors assured us that our demands will be met as soon as possible. Based on their assurance, we will start playing the NCL [National Cricket League] and attend the training camp [prior to the tour of India].”We told them that there should be [CWAB] elections swiftly. We want a representative from the current players, so that our problems can be discussed with the board regularly. It will be the best for the players. They have agreed, and the elections will be held when we are all available. We can tell you that we are happy when the demands are implemented, but discussions have been satisfying.”Hassan, who had a completely different tone to his angry press conference on Tuesday, said that the BCB would return to the Dhaka Premier League’s player transfers, as well as ensure a franchise model is in place in next season’s Bangladesh Premier League, as the players had demanded. He also said that the board would quickly increase the domestic players’ remuneration, but asked for time on improving infrastructure across the country.”We thank the players for coming today. They had a number of demands, which I told you yesterday we were mostly agreeable to,” he said. “Among their 11 demands, the first one [CWAB elections] doesn’t have anything to do with the BCB and the last demand [more than two NOCs per year to play overseas franchise tournaments] will be taken case to case.”We have agreed with the rest of the demands, like the DPL transfers and BPL franchise model. We will also significantly improve their allowances in the domestic competitions, and it will be done in the next two or three days. Not in six months or a year. We will also improve infrastructural facilities everywhere, and no longer take it phase by phase. I also heard from many players, and I have asked them to send them their issues in writing in the future.”Hassan said they had offered to cancel the NCL’s third round matches scheduled for October 24, but he was told that wasn’t necessary. “We wanted to leave out the NCL’s third round but the players said that if it is delayed by a day, they will make it to the venues,” Hassan said. “The national players will join the [pre-tour] camp on October 25, as was earlier planned.”Hassan, who had criticised the cricketers on Tuesday for going on strike and was made to wait for four hours before the meeting started on Wednesday, said that even during the discussion, he had started off angry. “I felt that it was a good discussion but I don’t think the players liked it, as I was angry at the start, but later the anger went away.”The strike that began on Monday afternoon with the centrally contracted and first-class cricketers, even attracted players from Dhaka’s first division league on Wednesday.

Michael Hogan, Timm van der Gugten give Glamorgan upper hand

Worcestershire dismisses for 205 as promotion-chasing Glamorgan take grip

ECB Reporters Network10-Sep-2019Glamorgan 44 for 2 trail Worcestershire 205 (Hogan 4-53) by 161 runs
Michael Hogan and fit-again Timm van der Gugten established a position of strength with the ball for promotion-chasing Glamorgan on the opening day of the Specsavers County Championship match with Worcestershire at Blackfinch New Road.Hogan remains a potent threat at the age of 38 and his return of 4 for 36 took his wicket tally for the campaign to 36 as Worcestershire were bowled out for 205 in 70 overs after an uncontested toss. It followed on from his 5 for 62 against the same opponents in the corresponding fixture at Cardiff in late June.Van der Gugten had suffered a back injury in that game but marked his return with three wickets including the prized scalp of England allrounder Moeen Ali.Only Daryl Mitchell, in his 200th first class game for Worcestershire, Riki Wessels, with a expansive 45, and Ed Barnard offered much resistance in another below-par batting performance from the home side. The inability of the top five to score consistently has been a prime reason for a disappointing red-ball campaign in contrast to Worcestershire’s success in the Vitality Blast in which they booked another spot at finals day on September 21. But Glamorgan’s focus is on achieving promotion for the first time since 2004.Although Nick Selman and Tom Cullen departed cheaply, by the close West Indies batsman Kraigg Brathwaite had moved on to a patient 15 out of 44 for 2 on his Glamorgan debut.Hogan made the first breakthrough of the day when bowling Hamish Rutherford after beating his defensive push.Moeen had scored a brilliant hundred against Sussex in Friday’s Blast quarter-final win at Hove. Here he managed only 18 before falling victim to van der Gugten after driving hard at the paceman and edging to Selman who held on to a low chance at third slip.Mitchell needed 24 balls to get off the mark but looked solid in defence in batting through the morning session for an unbeaten 31. But the visitors’ attack turned the screw once Hogan had returned to dismiss Mitchell in the second over after the resumption. He dabbed at a fine delivery and only succeeded in nicking through to keeper Chris Cooke to end his 103-ball knock of 36. Alex Milton provided Cooke with another catch off Lukas Carey and then Jack Haynes, who shouldered arms, and Ben Cox were both lbw to van der Gugten.Wessels innings was a mixture of fine drives and fortuitous edges and always entertaining. He faced only 35 deliveries and struck eight fours before he drilled Rory Smith straight to mid-off.Club captain Joe Leach went for an on drive against Smith and was leg before and Hogan accounted for tailenders Charlie Morris and Adam Finch to leave Barnard unbeaten on 29.When Glamorgan replied, they also encountered some disciplined bowling with Selman falling at first slip off Morris and Cullen aiming a lavish drive at Barnard and being caught behind.

Celtic could land dream Shankland alternative in swoop for £7.6k-p/w whiz

Celtic are reportedly closing in on their first signing of the January transfer window, which has been open for business for just over two weeks.

Sky Sports have claimed that Rapid Wien forward Nicolas Kuhn started his medical with the Scottish giants in London on Monday ahead of his move to the club.

The Hoops have agreed a £3m deal with the Austrian club to secure the impressive winger's services and he is set to put pen to paper on a four-and-a-half-year contract.

Football Insider reported last month that Brendan Rodgers would like to sign a winger, a central midfielder, and a centre-forward during the January window, and Kuhn ticks off one of those positions.

The Northern Irish head coach could now turn his attention to landing a new number nine to compete with Kyogo Furuhashi and Hyeon-gyu Oh during the second half of the season.

Celtic's search for a striker

Journalist Graeme Bailey claimed, at the start of this month, that the Hoops are considering a swoop to sign Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland.

However, the likes of Southampton, Hull, Burnley, Everton, and Sheffield United, among others, are also interested in a possible move for the Scotland international.

Football Insider reported that the Jam Tarts are expected to demand a fee of at least £3m for their star marksman, who has attracted interest from Rangers. However, the Light Blues could be forced to wait until the summer as they do not have the funds to splash out £3m for the forward.

Lawrence Shankland on international duty with Scotland.

This shows that Celtic would need to pay a decent fee for the Scottish attacker and they could have to convince him to turn down Premier League and Championship interest to move to Parkhead.

Rodgers could, however, land a dream alternative to Shankland by swooping in for Bologna's Sydney van Hooijdonk, who is the son of former Hoops striker Pierre.

Italian outlet 1000 Cuori Rossoblu recently claimed that Celtic, and German side Werder Bremen, are interested in a deal for the Dutch centre-forward.

It has been reported that the 23-year-old whiz is due to leave Bologna, where he has struggled for consistent minutes on the pitch this season, and that could open the door for the Bhoys to snap him up.

He could be a fantastic alternative to splashing out £3m for Shankland, despite the Hearts captain being a very attractive option for the Hoops on paper.

Shankland's Premiership goal record

The 28-year-old striker has made 99 appearances in the Scottish Premiership throughout his career and plundered an impressive 41 goals and ten assists, along with three goals in five top-six split outings.

He joined Hearts at the start of the 2022/23 campaign and hit the ground running with an outstanding return of 28 goals and four assists in 47 appearances in all competitions.

This season, Shankland has racked up 18 goals and three assists in 28 outings in all competitions for the Jam Tarts, which includes 13 goals in 21 Premiership matches.

He has scored seven goals in his last six top-flight appearances for Hearts and Celtic would be signing a player who is currently in-form and on fire in Scottish football.

These outstanding statistics suggest that the 28-year-old marksman would be able to hit the ground running at Parkhead to provide Rodgers with additional firepower at the top end of the pitch.

Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland.

However, the downside is that he will turn 29 at the start of next season and, from a financial perspective, there is little future benefit from signing him.

At his age, it appears unlikely that Shankland is set to develop much more to become a sellable asset for Celtic to make a profit on further down the line; as was the case with the likes of Moussa Dembele, Gary Hooper, and Odsonne Edouard – to name a few – in his position in the past.

The Hoops could, instead, invest in another promising young striker who has the potential to develop and increase his value over time by swooping for van Hooijdonk as an alternative.

The stats that show why van Hooijdonk could be lethal for Celtic

He has struggled for minutes at Bologna this season but his form in the Netherlands and his impressive career at youth level suggests that the young gem could be an exciting addition for Rodgers.

Van Hooijdonk has only started two Serie A matches this term, with nine outings in total, and is yet to contribute with a goal or an assist for his side.

However, the 23-year-old whiz spent the previous 18 months on loan with Heerenveen in the Netherlands and produced 26 goals in 54 appearances in all competitions.

As you can see from the table above, averaged more than one goal every other start in the Eredivisie for the Dutch side during the 2022/23 campaign.

The "prolific" – as he was once described by talent scout Jacek Kulig – started his career with NAC Breda and showcased his scoring potential at youth and senior level.

Van Hooijdonk plundered an astonishing 35 goals and two assists in 41 games for their U19 side in the academy before a return of 23 goals in 70 first-team matches.

These statistics suggest that Celtic would be signing a player with the quality to be a reliable goalscorer if they provide him with the right services, as evidenced by his excellent form in the Eredivisie last season.

Meanwhile, they would also be signing a 23-year-old prospect who is five years younger than Shankland and has far more re-sale potential for the club to make a profit on him in the future.

This is an effective way for the Hoops to make money to then fund further signings further down the line, as has been the case so many times in the past with the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Victor Wanyama, Edouard, and Kristoffer Ajer, among others.

Therefore, the £7.6k-per-week ace could be a dream alternative to Shankland to continue with the strategy of investing in young talent instead of going down the proven and experienced route with the Scotland native.

Wolves now open talks to bring Danny Ings to Molineux on loan this month

Wolverhampton Wanderers are in the market to add some quality additions this month and have now opened talks with an experienced Premier League operator who could arrive before the end of the window, according to a report.

Wolves scour the market…

The month of January can sometimes prove to be a complex time for clubs looking to seal deals; however, the Old Gold have already completed one developmental signing in the form of Fletcher Holman, who joins from National League South outfit Eastbourne Borough and will link up with Wolves' Under-21 set-up.

Academy chief Jon Hunter-Barrett has shared his delight at being able to bring Holman to the West Midlands, stating via the club's official website: "Once again our recruitment team have done a fantastic job in unearthing a talent playing in non-league football who is capable to come into our building.

"The big thing with Wolves is we’re a football club and academy that provides opportunities for players who have been here a long time and also players who have come from a different environment into ours."

Nonetheless, Gary O'Neil will be keen to acquire players equipped to join his first-team squad and contribute for the remainder of the campaign. Financial prudence is a central feature of the Old Gold's approach to the mid-season market and Paris Saint-Germain outcast Hugo Ekitike is reportedly a target to add some offensive impetus in the final third.

Conversely, new information has come to light claiming that a striker with significantly more experience could instead be brought in to spearhead O'Neils's attack.

Wolves open Danny Ings talks…

According to Football Insider, Wolves have opened talks with West Ham United over a loan deal for striker Danny Ings, who has fallen out of favour at the London Stadium. The Old Gold are believed to be in the market for a poacher after letting Sasa Kalajdzic move to Eintracht Frankfurt this month.

Hwang-hee Chan has departed for the Asian Cup and left a void to be filled at the top end of the field; nevertheless, Wolves don't have the financial muscle available to bring in a permanent reinforcement and have turned to Ings as a known operator with goalscoring ability. If he arrives at Molineux, they will need to cover his wages and pay a loan fee for his services.

Labelled "brilliant" by former teammate Matty Cash, the 31-year-old has made 18 appearances across all competitions this season, though he is yet to put himself on the goal trail.

Despite this, his record over the course of his career speaks for itself and Ings would be an ideal short-term solution for Wolves as they look to maintain their impressive exploits in the Premier League.

The cheapest and most expensive season tickets in the Premier League

The Premier League is one of, if not the best, league in the world. It is filled to the brim with Ballon d'Or nominees and world-class managers capable of lifting Europe's biggest honours. And fans in England have the opportunity to watch week in, week out, as their sides do battle…for a certain price, of course.

The cost of a season ticket to watch your side every week – to sing songs likely aimed towards the referee's performance, and celebrate every goal like it's your last – seems very much worth it. Except, you rapidly begin to notice just how much you've paid when you travelled far and wide only to see your side concede seven against your rivals. Looking at you, Manchester United fans…

With that said, the natural question is, what's the most and least expensive season ticket in the Premier League? Well, that's a query recently answered by The Athletic, which revealed some surprising numbers that you can see below.

Football FanCast provides you with all the ins and outs of a season ticket in the Premier League.

How do season tickets work in the Premier League?

Buyers can attend all home games

A season ticket allows the buyer to attend all home games across a single Premier League campaign, and also any cup competition the club is involved in.

Generally, they can be extremely difficult to get a hold of with most sides having a waiting list to even buy one and it'll likely set you back a fortune.

Though, the idea of a season ticket is that it's a great deal cheaper than purchasing a single one for each game.

How much has the cost of a Premier League season ticket increased?

Three London clubs froze their prices

The report revealed that seven Premier League clubs charge over £1k for a standard seat, and only three clubs have opted to freeze their season ticket prizes, with 17 raising them and some going as far as increasing by 10% or more in what will inevitably hit fans hard in the United Kingdom’s current cost of living crisis.

The three clubs to have frozen their season ticket prices are Chelsea, Brentford and Tottenham Hotspur – all London clubs. Chelsea and Tottenham decided to freeze their prices after enduring disappointing campaigns in front of their supporters.

The figures did not make for positive reading, as a whole, with many clubs becoming stricter in their categorisation of pricing and less generous when it comes to qualifying as a senior or junior ticket holder.

The increased pricing is not set to damage attendance figures, as only five Premier League sides do not currently have a waiting list for season tickets, but it does bring forth the value of fans once more, who remain a crucial part of the so-called beautiful game, as shown in the Covid-19 pandemic.

What is the most expensive Premier League season ticket?

Four of the 'big six' aren't in the top five

Surprisingly sitting top of the list is Fulham, who finished 10th last season and charge £3k for their most expensive season ticket.

Newly-promoted Luton Town, meanwhile, sit bottom of the list, charging just £500 for their most expensive season ticket in a positive first step into England's top flight.

What's more, it's quite surprising that traditional big six members such as Man United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City aren't even in the top five.

Which Premier League club has the cheapest season ticket?

Three clubs sell a season ticket for less than £400

West Ham United sell the cheapest season ticket in the Premier League, which caught us by surprise a little given they're a London club. Prices tend to be dearer in the capital, which is evinced noticeably by Arsenal's cheapest season ticket of £973.50.

Meanwhile, Burnley and Manchester City are the only two other clubs to offer a season ticket sub £400, with the latter especially rather striking given the trophy-laden decade they've enjoyed.

Manchester United, who stage their home fixtures at the second-largest football venue (Old Trafford) in the United Kingdom, offer a season ticket for £551 – making it the 11th cheapest across the division.
