O Palmeiras é o maior clube do Brasil. O segredo do sucesso é simples, disciplina, ambição e consistência.

Man Utd could banish Martial by signing “one of the best strikers in the world”

In short, Manchester United have massively underperformed this campaign.

Erik ten Hag’s side are eighth in the Premier League, with only Burnley and Sheffield United scoring fewer goals. That's despite the addition of Rasmus Hojlund, a man brought to the club for a whopping fee of £72m.

With that in mind, the Red Devils must simply look to bolster their attack in the January transfer window, with a centre forward on their wish list.

Man Utd transfers latest – The battle for a centre forward

According to Football Transfers, Man United are set to battle Aston Villa for the signature of Jonathan David during the January market.

Jonathan David for Lille.

The Lille forward is looking to make the next step in his career, and a move to the Premier League is on his bucket list.

However, the move would be permanent, which could price United out of a move this winter if departures don’t occur as a result of their financial fair play situation.

How Jonathan David compares to Anthony Martial

Anthony Martial’s Man United career has seen quality amongst numerous injury setbacks, which have ultimately prevented him from becoming a key player for prolonged periods.

Last season, the France forward missed 27 matches due to five different injuries, and with his contract expiring this summer, Ten Hag may look to banish him this winter to raise some funds.

The money raised could be put aside for the potential transfer of David, who is a key player for Lille. The Canadian hasn’t been at his best this season, scoring five goals in 17 Ligue 1 appearances, but he has shown signs of improvement recently, scoring in three of his last five league matches.

Nonetheless, the table below shows David’s statistics from the last year across the top European leagues and how he compares to positional peers.

As you can see, the 23-year-old is an extremely technical centre forward who can thrive in any game state due to his ability with the ball at his feet. This would suit Ten Hag’s side as they often dominate the ball against lesser opposition but wait for counterattacks against better teams.

The Canadian can be used as a target man by playing the ball directly to him, as well as a modern striker who can run in behind, which would help United turn attack into defence quickly, using Andre Onana’s pinpoint long passes to their advantage. The forward would also retain the ball, ensuring that his side mantains control, as displayed via his high pass completion percentage.

Jonathan David chases after the ball for Lille in their Ligue 1 game against Lorient.

However, most importantly, David knows how to put the ball in the back of the net. The striker is a proven goal scorer, and it was only last season that he netted 24 goals in 37 Ligue 1 matches. This type of reliable centre-forward has been missing this season at the Red Devils, with the young Hojlund only netting once in 15 Premier League games so far.

The former Gent ace would provide a different approach to the 20-year-old, who often plays on the fringe of the game, as shown by the fact that the United starlet ranks in the bottom 86% of strikers for passes attempted in the league.

United’s lack of goals has held them back this season, particularly considering Onana has the joint most clean sheets. David, therefore, would improve the attack immensely not just through his goals, but he would also take the pressure off Hojlund, who is visibly frustrated with his lack of output.

t’s clear that Ten Hag would be making a mistake by not attempting to sign “one of the best strikers in the world," as dubbed by media personality Tony Marinaro.

An island of legends: Desmond Haynes picks his greatest Barbados Test XI

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Jan-20196:48

Desmond Haynes All-Time Barbabos XI

Ahead of England’s first Test against West Indies in Barbados, ESPNcricinfo asked Desmond Haynes, West Indies legend and Visit Barbados ambassador, to look back on the greatest players in the island’s history, and pick an all-time Barbados Test XIConrad Hunte (44 Tests, 3245 runs at 45.06)
I would have to give way to Sir Conrad at the top of the order, because he was simply the better batsman. He was a country boy from St Andrew who made 142 on his Test debut against Pakistan at Bridgetown, including two fours from his first two balls. In fact, he made a habit of getting off the mark with a four, which is amazing. As an opening batsman, you look back and see three slips and two gullies, no-one’s bowling at your legs, everyone’s bowling outside off to the fields on the off side.Gordon Greenidge (108 Tests, 7558 runs at 44.72)
Our opening partnership broke records, but Gordon was the better player. His technique was super, especially against spin. And his double-century to beat England at Lord’s in 1984 was just unbelievable. I remember it very well as I got run out by Allan Lamb, and I still had my pads on while Gordon and Larry Gomes were setting about the runs. We were chasing 342 on the final day, and everyone thought we’d bat out time, but Gordon had a different idea. He thought that, if he got going, he could get the runs in an afternoon, and he did.Frank Worrell (left) and Everton Weekes walk out to bat•Getty Images

Everton Weekes (48 Tests, 4455 runs at 58.61)
Richie Benaud reckoned Sir Everton was the closest player he’d seen to Don Bradman. He made five consecutive Test hundreds, and then got run out on 90 against India – some people reckon he was already past the crease when he was given out! He was very classical and stylish, always looked the part, with his shirt buttoned up and a scarf round his neck. He hardly ever hit a six, he just kept everything on the ground. His legacy, alongside Sir Frank Worrell and Sir Clyde Walcott, is what Barbados cricket is all about. If these guys could come from a tiny island in the Atlantic and become the best batsmen in the world, then we could too.Seymour Nurse (29 Tests, 2523 runs at 47.60)
Seymour Nurse was my hero. He had the whole area of St James mesmerised when I was growing up. All of us loved him. We walked like him, talked like him, we tried to copy his shots. We used to watch him at Kensington Oval, the way he’d lean back to cut the ball and end up standing by the square leg umpire, the way he’d always get off the mark with a leg glance. He was super and stylish. He retired far too early, but went out with a hundred and a double-hundred in his final series against New Zealand. What a lovely way to finish.Clyde Walcott (wk) (44 Tests, 3798 runs at 56.68; 53 catches, 11 stumpings)
He was so strong off the back foot, and his record is just incredible. Sir Clyde will be the wicketkeeper in my team as well, which is a role he played very well in the early years of his career. It’s hard luck on David Murray, who was a great student of the game, with a very good cricketing brain and, in my opinion, the best keeper that Barbados ever produced. But sadly his batting wasn’t strong enough to match the standards required for this all-time team. And besides, you simply cannot argue with the record and legacy of the 3Ws.Garry Sobers pulls during his unbeaten 163 at Lord’s•PA Photos

Garfield Sobers (93 Tests, 8032 runs at 57.78; 235 wickets at 34.03)
What can you say about Sir Garry? He is the best allrounder the world has ever seen, and the best overall cricketer, and he’s a lovely human being too. I never got to play against him, but I once faced him in an indoor net in Brisbane when he was coaching some schoolchildren. He was bowling back-of-the-hand wristspin, and asked me to pad up so I could show the kids how to face it. After five or six balls, he said “Stop, stop, you can’t play this either!” Sir Garry’s reading of the game was incredible. They used to say he’d leave a position in the field, go somewhere different – like from slip to silly point – and the ball would come straight to him. That’s the type of person he is.Frank Worrell (capt) (51 Tests, 3860 runs at 49.48)
Sir Frank was the first black captain of West Indies, and a great leader, and everyone still talks about how he moulded the team, and brought them together. Look at what happened on that tour of Australia in 1960-61, when West Indies played with style and passion (especially during the tied Test at Brisbane) and thousands of people lined the streets to say farewell to the team after the series. This gentleman is considered to be one of the biggest icons we’ve had in Barbados, and his record speaks for himself.Malcolm Marshall (81 Tests, 376 wickets at 20.94)
Macco had it all. Inswing, outswing, and a vicious skidding bouncer, but I’ve never seen anyone with a work ethic quite like him. He never practiced with a new ball, he used to look for one that had been half-chewed by a dog, then work on it, and still make it do something. And that’s the way to learn. He loved his stats too. I remember on a tour of Pakistan, he said to me, ‘the greatest fast bowler, Dennis Lillee, got one wicket here, so as soon as I get two, I’m better than him!’ Fielding at bat-pad, he was my buddy. I used to encourage him to run in hard at their bowlers, because in a few overs’ time they’d be bowling to me, and if he could inflict some pain on them, it’d make my life easier! We never had to do a lot of talking out in the field. We let the ball do the talking for us.Malcolm Marshall bowling in Barbados•Getty Images

Joel Garner (58 Tests, 259 wickets at 20.97)
Joel would be my man for fixing up the tail, he had a serious yorker, and I remember a Test match here in Barbados when he broke Bruce Yardley’s toe. Malcolm was quicker, and Andy Roberts too, but Joel got awkward bounce from very close to the body, and the keeper would always be taking the ball above his head. He had a lovely approach to the crease too, very low into his last three or four strides before rising into his action, which was lovely to see. He just bowled straight, on a heavy back-of-a-length. Can you imagine trying to face him at Perth? He was just amazing in those conditions. I never saw anyone get hold of him and put some lashes in him.Wes Hall (48 Tests, 192 wickets at 26.38)
This was a very easy choice. Any fast bowler who can bowl close to 100mph and deliver awayswinger bouncers is always going to be difficult to face. He had remarkable stamina, running in from the sightscreen for long spells. He was just an unbelievable athlete. Amazingly, he was a wicketkeeper when he started out, but one day he got up and decided to bowl fast and all of a sudden was the No.1 bowler in the world. He moved to Trinidad late in his career, and made a fantastic contribution there as a coach, bringing through so many youngsters.Charlie Griffith (28 Tests, 94 wickets at 28.54)
There are so many Barbados fast bowlers to choose from, but Sir Charles gets in my team because of the partnership he forged with Sir Wes. He was a fearsome fast bowler. People used to seek him out in club cricket, hoping he wouldn’t bowl fast at them, but that never worked. He started out as an offspinner, but one day, when he decided to bowl quick, he took 7 for 1 and never looked back. Off the field he was a bus conductor, and that was inspiring too. Just look at the background of all of these guys, from such humble homes and upbringings. We’d look at the contribution they made to Barbados, and by extension West Indies, and think, we can do it too. As a youngster, all I wanted to do was play cricket for West Indies. For the perfect holiday in Barbados, including how to get here, where to stay and what to do, go to VisitBarbados.org

    WHAT NEXT FOR MANCHESTER CITY?

The reigning champions will be back in action in the Premier League on Thursday as they take on Brighton in a difficult away fixture.

Arsenal could lose "exceptional" star in January move

Whilst Arsenal haven't been perfect this season, they have been good enough to gain a place at the top of the Premier League, as they search for redemption following last season's title heartbreak against treble winners Manchester City. The Gunners narrowly overcame the challenge of Brentford through unlikely hero Kai Havertz and remain on course to seal the ultimate silverware as a result.

Those in North London haven't been without their problems, however, with Mikel Arteta forced to make some ruthless decisions within his squad – decisions which could have consequences in the January transfer window, according to recent reports.

Arsenal transfer news

Arsenal deserve credit for how they acted in the summer transfer window. They could have so easily been satisfied with the squad that came ever so close to Premier League glory, but, instead, they simply built on the foundation that Arteta had already set. In came Declan Rice, in came David Raya and in came Jurrien Timber to take the Gunners up another level. Rice and Raya have been particularly impressive, whilst Timber is in the middle of a long spell on the sidelines. Raya's form has seen him gain the number one spot, however, and that could result in a January exit for Aaron Ramsdale.

Arsenal star who took 100 touches outshone Havertz v Brentford

ByMatt Dawson Nov 26, 2023

According to The Daily Star, Wolverhampton Wanderers want to sign Ramsdale on loan with an obligation to buy in January, as they expect Jose Sa to secure a move to the Saudi Pro League in the winter window. Ramsdale needs game time if he is to keep his place in the England squad for the Euros and a move to the Midlands would give him exactly that, having fallen out of favour at The Emirates.

England manager Gareth Southgate previously spoke about the goalkeeper losing his place at Arsenal, saying via The Metro: "We’re just going to have to see how it is. I had that conversation with him in the last camp. He’s still battling to be the No 1 at Arsenal, and his profile and the way he can use the ball with his feet, we like and think is important.

"But there is a reality as a keeper, if we get to March and he’s six months without playing regularly, then I’m never going to promise things that I couldn’t guarantee delivering. So he knows that, he’s perfectly realistic about that."

"Exceptional" Ramsdale fighting for Arsenal place

Ramsdale's battle to regain the number one spot from Raya at Arsenal remains ongoing, with both goalkeepers enduring struggles at times. Speaking about Ramsdale after Arsenal's recent League Cup victory over Brentford, Arteta said via TNT Sports: “He’s been exceptional around the place with the situation. Like everybody.

“We love him more for sure. We have him every day. We know him, we know his character and we are really happy to have him. I don’t think I’m the one to answer the question about Aaron Ramsdale’s quality because I’m the one who signed him when everyone else was questioning that decision. So I don’t think I’m the one to answer that question.

"Every player is very important. We have a lot of injuries as well and players who contributed. But in football it’s about now, it’s about the moment. Today he [Ramsdale] had the opportunity to play and he played a really big game.”

Newcastle’s Tonali replacement plan boosted as "exceptional" ace wants move

Newcastle United have been boosted by the news that an "exceptional" transfer target is keen on a move to St James' Park in the January transfer window.

Newcastle eyeing Sandro Tonali replacements

The Magpies could look to improve in a number of areas when January arrives, but it has been no great surprise to see numerous midfielders linked with a move to the club, with that position seen as the main point of focus. That's because of Sandro Tonali's ten-month ban for betting offences, which means he won't play a single minute for the rest of this season, acting as a significant blow for Eddie Howe.

There is the option of Newcastle simply making do with their current options, considering they are still getting by with the players they have in the middle of the park, but that could be deemed a risk the longer the season goes on, with fixtures coming thick and fast in various competitions.

The likes of Kalvin Phillips, N'Golo Kante, Ruben Neves and Scott McTominay have all been linked with joining Newcastle, with a loan move looking most likely. It could even be a short-term deal until the end of the campaign comes to fruition, at which point Tonali would be edging towards his return to action.

Kalvin Phillips wants Newcastle move

According to a new update from Calciomercato [via Sport Witness], Phillips is specifically interested in joining Newcastle in January, with the report stating that the Magpies "lead the pack of clubs" looking to snap him up.

England midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

While Juventus have also been seen as contenders to bring in the Manchester City and England ace, it is claimed that "Phillips is not Juventus’ first choice and Juventus are not Phillips’ first-choice". Instead, Newcastle are the club that the 27-year-old would like to join, seeing it as his best destination as he looks to boost his chances of featuring prominently for his country at Euro 2024.

Phillips has always arguably felt like the Magpies' best option to bring in when the January transfer window opens, so the fact that he would like to head to St James' can only be a good thing. Unlike Kante and Neves, he is still playing in the Premier League rather than the Saudi Pro League, so he could be more ready to make a seamless switch from City to Newcastle.

While the Englishman's year-and-a-bit-long spell at City hasn't gone to plan yet, he has still done his bit for the cause and was part of a squad that won a historic treble last season. Pep Guardiola may be happy to see Phillips move on in the near future, but the legendary Spaniard has still spoken highly of him, saying he is "exceptional in many things".

The former Leeds United star could be a perfect short-term replacement for Tonali, providing similar energy and technical ability in midfield, and if he were to come in and impress, it could even be that Newcastle look to sign him on a permanent deal once the 2023/24 season reaches its conclusion.

John Harnden, John Warn duel to replace James Sutherland

One of Melbourne Grand Prix chairman John Harnden or the former Cricket New South Wales chairman John Warn may be named as the new chief executive of Cricket Australia as soon as next week after the race to succeed the longtime boss James Sutherland narrowed to the final preferred candidate stage.ESPNcricinfo understands that two other remaining candidates, one of them the current Cricket Australia chief operating officer Kevin Roberts, were informed they had fallen out of the running at the start of the week, with final presentations by Harnden – also a CA Board director – and Warn believed to have been made on Tuesday.Another senior figure who is thought to have featured in leadership discussions is the former Australian women’s team captain and head of game development Belinda Clark, who is highly regarded within CA and may well be in line to replace Harnden or Warn after their tenure, which is not expected to come close to the 17 years clocked up by Sutherland.Roberts, who had appeared a likely successor for Sutherland from the moment he left the CA Board to join the executive management team in late 2015, raised the ire of the Australian Cricketers Association last year for the way he managed pay negotiations with the players’ union, resulting in a standoff where players went unpaid for almost a month and an Australia A tour of South Africa was cancelled. He was ultimately sidelined from talks that were to be concluded by Sutherland and the team performance manager Pat Howard. However, Roberts is thought to have retained the backing of the chairman David Peever to replace Sutherland until late in the process. Succession planning was one of numerous issues raised by the former Board director Bob Every when he quit CA in protest at Peever being given in-principle approval to continue as chairman for another three years. This decision remains to be ratified by the states at the CA annual general meeting on October 25.When Sutherland replaced Malcolm Speed in 2001, he was only 35 years old and younger than the then Australian team captain Steven Waugh. By contrast Harnden (53, the same age as Sutherland) and Warn (45) are considerably more seasoned. However, CA’s current battle to regain public confidence, bed-down a new $1.18 billion broadcast deal with News Corp and Seven and also make ready for hosting the two separate women’s and men’s world Twenty20 tournaments in 2020 suggests an intensive commission for Sutherland’s successor.Other major issues for CA include efforts to contextualise international cricket via the ICC, with Test and ODI championships due to begin in 2019, and the juggling of the Big Bash League amid an increasingly clogged rota of domestic T20 tournaments, many of which offer considerably greater financial incentives. Equally, the game is in a constant battle for participants and spectators with other Australian sports, as evidenced by the game’s slip to seventh, below basketball, for participation numbers according to Sport Australia’s annual figures.Harnden, who is Melbourne-based, has been considered the most likely candidate for some time, given the breadth of his experience as a former chief executive of the Australian Grand Prix, the South Australian Cricket Association, the Melbourne Commonwealth Games and the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup before replacing Ron Walker as the Melbourne Grand Prix chairman. In particular his record of running major events would be an advantage ahead of 2020, while his work with a variety of state and federal governments provides an indicator of the political skills required at ICC level.Nevertheless, Harnden has also sat on the CA Board since 2016, in that time being a part of flawed decision-making around the MoU. The appointment of an internal candidate, at a time when CA is itself subject to a broad cultural review by the Ethics Centre following the Newlands ball-tampering scandal, would also be a matter for conjecture.Warn, based in Sydney, stepped down from his roles as NSW chairman and also a senior executive at Westfield earlier this year to spend more time with his family, and would need to move south to take up the role heading CA’s operations at their Jolimont headquarters. Known as a highly combative club cricketer for Manly-Warringah in Sydney grade competition, Warn’s corporate career in retail has dovetailed with directorships at Cricket NSW and also the NSW Waratahs rugby union team.He and the NSW chief executive Andrew Jones were widely credited with improving the structure and performance of Australian cricket’s largest state association. However, Warn also presided over a recent downturn in the results of the men’s state team and the failure of its younger generation to develop after the fashion of the likes of Steven Smith, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins, which saw the coach Trent Johnston replaced by Phil Jaques over the off-season.Others mentioned as potential candidates included the WACA chief executive Christina Matthews, Jones, NRL CEO Todd Greenberg and Football Federation Australia CEO David Gallop. At the time that Sutherland announced his impending resignation in June, Peever stated that candidates with a significant knowledge of or background in cricket would likely be favoured.”This is an incredibly complex job, it has many dimensions,” Peever said. “What we must do is find the best person for the role. While I don’t want to put any constraints around it, it is a Cricket Australia role, so we’re probably going to have a little bit of bias towards an Australian, and it is a role in cricket, so we’ll probably have a bias towards someone in cricket.”

Chelsea: Poch’s "super" undroppable dynamo has outperformed Chilwell

A rejuvenated Chelsea showed more signs of improvement in their performance against Arsenal, racing into a 2-0 lead at Stamford Bridge before the Gunners battled back late on to salvage a point.

The Blues will have been bitterly disappointed to have dropped two points from a strong position, however, the result did see them avoid a record fourth-straight Premier League loss at home to their North London rivals.

It also saw plenty of their stars rise up to the occasion and put in a sublime performance on Saturday evening.

Who were Chelsea's standout performers v Arsenal?

Chelsea forward Mudryk.

A revived Mykhaylo Mudryk sent out a huge statement on his return to the starting XI and put in a complete performance.

The 22-year-old earned the spot kick which Cole Palmer dispatched before getting the name on the scoresheet himself as his suspected cross looped into the net over goalkeeper David Raya.

It's been an underwhelming start to his career in West London but the Ukraine international, who was described by those close to him as a "sleeping superstar" in the Chelsea squad, as per TEAMtalk, has certainly showcased those star-like qualities against Arsenal, lighting up the crowd with his pace and trickery while helping his side out in a defensive capacity.

In his 66 minutes on the pitch, Mudryk's all-action performance saw him attempt two crosses, record a shot on target and draw two fouls, but also track back for his team, winning two of his four ground duels, blocking one shot and making one interception, as per SofaScore.

He wasn't the only player to shine in the defensive third for the Blues as Mauricio Pochettino lavished praise on left-back Marc Cucurella for his impressive display against the Gunners.

The Argentine said: “He is training really well, that is why he playing like today, against a very good player like Saka."

Indeed, Cucurella limited one of the most dangerous wingers on the planet through his tough tackling and tenacious defensive work, recording the most tackles in the match (5), winning seven of his 13 ground duels, making two clearances, and blocking one shot, as per Sofascore.

After impressive performances against Fulham and Burnley, in which he completed at least 90% of his attempted passes, it was his best display against Arsenal that has begun to show why he deserves more respect and certainly a place in the starting XI.

How has Marc Cucurella performed this season?

Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella.

Pochettino has significantly improved Conor Gallagher but it is the form of Cucurella, who turned down the chance to move to Newcastle United and Manchester United in the summer, that has caught the eye.

The 25-year-old ace has flourished while playing as a right or left back and Chelsea are yet to lose a game that the Spaniard has started this season, shutting out the noise that came from his £62m price tag and reminding many why the Blues and Manchester City were neck on neck to sign him after his sensational performances for Brighton.

With first-choice left-back Ben Chilwell sidelined till December, Cucurella has taken his opportunity to impress Pochettino while the manner of his performance against Bukayo Saka, who failed to get any loose change out of his opponent, has accentuated that point further.

Described by Pochettino as "super professional", Cucurella's transformation from being on the brink to leaving the club as a flop to now one of Chelsea's most influential players is a testament to the dedication and perseverance that the Spaniard has shown.

During his renaissance at Stamford Bridge, the £175k per-week dynamo has been outperforming Chilwell in a defensive capacity, averaging more balls recovered than the Englishman (7.0/3.0), tackles (3.7/0.8), interceptions (1/3/0.5) and clearances (3.0/0.5) per game at league level this term, as per Sofascore.

Although Chilwell has been deployed in a more advanced role under Pochettino, it is no coincidence that Chelsea have performed significantly better in a defensive capacity since throwing Cucurella into battle with the Spanish international now undroppable due to his impressive displays.
