Fawad Ahmed's hard road to acceptance

The Pakistan-born legspinner Fawad Ahmed has been granted asylum in Australia. That could be just the beginning of his cricketing journey

Firdose Moonda19-Nov-2012When this month began, Fawad Ahmed did not know how much longer he would be able to reside in Australia. As an asylum-seeker, he was waiting for a verdict while he worked in a warehouse and tried to make his way playing cricket. Now, 19 days into November, Ahmed is choosing between contracts from at least three different Big Bash League franchises, has been made a permanent resident and harbours hopes of representing Australia. If ever cricket has been the catalyst for changing for someone’s life, that person is Ahmed, who played ten first-class matches in Pakistan.Ironically, it could also have been responsible for causing him great harm too. When Ahmed lived in Pakistan’s northern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, he was a supporter of an NGO who worked for women’s rights, played cricket and coached children in the game, and admired the art of Shane Warne from afar. Those activities were considered dangerous enough to result in him being targeted and threatened by militants.”My life was in danger because they thought I was promoting Western values and culture and they warned me that if I continued doing that, I would be in trouble,” he told ESPNcricinfo.Fearing for his safety, Ahmed decided he would have to leave his mother, two brothers and sister behind and search for a new life. Choice did not play much of a role when he fled. Australia, rather than a place like the United Kingdom, was his destination because he had friends in the country who could help him get set up. Before leaving, Ahmed had been sponsored a short-stay visa from the Yoogali Cricket Association in New South Wales.Despite having a Masters degree in international relations and political science, he knew he would find it difficult to get a job with a temporary visa and concentrated on playing cricket and doing odd jobs while applying for asylum. He ended up in Melbourne because his initial documentation was delayed but it turned out to be a happy accident because he found it a “beautiful city” and was soon involved with a local club.Hoppers Crossing, a club in Victoria’s turf cricket association, was the first place his legspin was noticed in Australia. He dominated the league competition there before being sought by Melbourne University Cricket Club, a premier league club that has produced a number of Test cricketers in past years.”He was taking so many wickets and was becoming quite well known on the club circuit,” president Derek Bennett said. But there was much more to Ahmed than just his ability to be destructive with ball in hand and Bennett knew he would have tread delicately.”When we were talking to him about playing for us, it was obvious that he had come from a horrendous situation,” Bennett said. “I spoke to everyone at the club and told them that this guy had had a very complicated life. We knew if we wanted to get involved with him, we’d have to be in for everything that goes with it and we went in with our eyes wide open. But for a guy who turned up without much, he had a good network of friends and we knew he would make it.”Bennett was also confident that the University would be able to assist Ahmed because they had strictures in place for people seeking refugee status. While the administrative issues were taking their course, Ahmed made even more of a name for himself in Australian cricket circles. He became involved with Victoria’s Harmony in Cricket Programme, an initiative which saw him go out to “mostly Indian, Pakistani and Sri Lankan communities to promote cricket and help players register with clubs”.Having made a successful transition from outsider to accepted, Ahmed wants to be able to help others do the same. “I have been welcomed so well. Everyone respects me and I respect them,” he said. “People have been really warm to me and have helped me wholeheartedly.”One of those people was Australia’s Test opener Ed Cowan, who befriended Ahmed when he bowled to the team in the nets last year. Specifically, Cowan found that Ahmed had more in common with South Africa’s Pakistani-born legspinner, Imran Tahir, than just nationality and kept the information in the memory bank as he hoped Australia could use Ahmed in the lead-up to the current series.

“My life was in danger because they thought I was promoting Western values and culture and they warned me that if I continued doing that, I would be in trouble.”Fawad Ahmed

But in August all those plans came close to unravelling. Ahmed’s claim for asylum was rejected, which left ministerial intervention as his only recourse. Bennett helped him send documents directly to the federal immigration minister, which also contained supporting letters from some heavyweights in the game. Cricket Australia’s chief executive James Sutherland was among them.Sutherland has taken up the issue of diversity, or lack thereof, in Australian cricket seriously. At Cricket Australia’s recent chief executives’ conference, he spoke about the need to “be more inclusive”. While Australian cricket has fielded players from eastern European backgrounds such as Simon Katich and Michael Kasprowicz, they have in recent years had only had one player who has sub-continental lineage, Usman Khawaja, play for them, despite waves of immigrants from that part of the world. Ahmed has given them a way to change that. The news of his permanent residency status was received with much joy. Ahmed was called an “exceptionally talented cricketer with extraordinary resilience” by Bennett and a “skilful, compassionate young man” by Cowan. Sutherland said the Australian cricket community was “thrilled” by the decision. While touching, those words were not as significant as Cricket Australia’s actions.Immediately, CA waived the usual eligibility restrictions and announced that Ahmed would be able to play in the Big Bash this season. He was soon flooded with offers. One is understood to be from his local franchise the Melbourne Renegades, where he seems likely to end up.It also means that Ahmed, despite being over 30, is able to think of bigger things. Although he does not know the requirement to make him available for Australian selection he hopes to play for them, the same way Tahir has qualified in South Africa. Unlike Ahmed, Tahir relocated for love, not safety, but has since become a regular fixture in the Test team.Ahmed remembers playing against Tahir in Pakistan where “he played for Lahore and I played for Peshawar”. Seeing him again in Brisbane, where Ahmed was bowling to the Australians in the nets again, showed him what was possible. “It was good to see Imran in Brisbane, he is a nice guy and a very good player and to see where he is now is great.”With a bright future ahead it would be easy for Ahmed to forget about his home country altogether but he has not done that. He is an ardent supporter of cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan, who he believes should be the next leader of Pakistan. “All hope rests with him, hopefully he can become the prime minister and if he does, he will run the country well.”One of the things Ahmed would like to see change in Pakistan is the continued absence of international cricket and he thinks with Imran in charge that could happen. He may go back too, although not to play, just to see his homeland and his family again.”I am really hopeful and think the day is not far when I will return home to see my family,” he said. “So far, they have been safe and hopefully they will remain that way. It was me that was being warned, not them. I hope to see them again soon.”

Happy birthday Rose Taylor

ESPNcricinfo presents the plays of the day from Pakistan’s encounter with New Zealand

Osman Samiuddin and Brydon Coverdale in Pallekele 08-Mar-2011Birthday gift of the day
Ross Taylor turned 27 today. Then he came across Kamran Akmal, who gifted him two lives in three balls, on 0 and 4. Then he got a career-best hundred. Happy birthday Ross.Sign of the day
At least one fan in the crowd was prepared for Taylor’s big day, with a computer print-out that was held up as a sign. There was only one problem. It read: “Happy birthday Rose Taylor”. Ah well, a Ross by any other name would smell as sweet.Opening of the day
Pakistan: land of strapping, wicket-taking fast bowlers who blow through you with the new ball and clean up with the old? Perhaps not. Shahid Afridi chose to open with Abdur Rehman for the second over of the innings, the time a spinner had bowled one of the first two overs for Pakistan in an ODI since April 1998, when Mohammad Hussain – another left-arm spinner – did so. And until his last two overs went for 34, he hadn’t done such a bad job of it.Communication failure of the day
The Powerplays often create headaches for captains, but it was even more so for Shahid Afridi during New Zealand’s innings. After 10 overs, he seemed to believe the bowling Powerplay had started, but one ball into the over was in an animated discussion with the umpire Nigel Llong, who had not given the signal. At the start of the next over, Afridi made it clear to the other official, Daryl Harper that he wanted the Powerplay to begin. Remarkably, the same thing appeared to happen with the batting Powerplay. Afridi had only three fielders outside the circle for the first two balls of the 41st over, apparently under the impression New Zealand had taken the Powerplay. Again, Llong clarified matters, and at the start of the next over, Afridi watched closely as Harper signalled that finally the batting Powerplay was under way.Atmosphere of the day
It’s to be expected that not all the neutral matches in this World Cup will be well attended, but the crowd at Pallekele was wonderful. Not for nearly a decade has Kandy hosted a one-day international, and the city’s only international cricket in more than three years was the horribly rain-affected Test against West Indies last year. The locals have clearly been craving the game. A big crowd turned out and cheered vociferously for both teams, roaring their support of Taylor late in the New Zealand innings. No doubt the solid numbers were helped by the price of tickets – the cheapest were only 30 rupees, which equates to approximately 27 US cents.

Hayden continues his India bashing

Stats highlights from the third day of the Adelaide Test between Australia and India

Matthew Hayden’s outstanding run continues: his 103 is his 30th Test hundred, which puts him sixth in the all-time list, and third among Australians. He went past Don Bradman’s mark of 29, and only Steve Waugh (32) and Ricky Ponting (33) are ahead of him. Hayden’s 30th ton came in his 94th Test, a rate of 3.13 matches per hundred. Among the top six, his rate is easily the best. Hayden has been especially dominant at home: 21 of his hundreds have come in Australia, where he averages 62.48. Overseas his average drops to 43.57. During the course of his innings Hayden also went past Allan Border as Australia’s most prolific batsman against India: he has scored 1654 runs against them at an average of 66.16; Border’s 1567 came at an average of 52.23. His knock also made him the ninth batsman – and the fourth from Australia – to get to 5000 Test runs at home. Brian Lara leads the way with 6217, but in terms of averages, only Ponting, with an average of 62.68, is marginally ahead of Hayden among these nine batsmen. For the eighth time in 11 innings, Hayden and Phil Jaques put together a 50-plus opening stand. The 159 they added is their highest partnership, and it lifted their average to 71.27. Hayden has been involved in 49 century stands, almost a third of them with Ponting. Virender Sehwag spoke about Australia’s surprisingly defensive tactics with the bat, and stats indicate it’s highly unusual for them to score more than 300 at less than three runs per over. Since 2000, it has only happened six times, and only thrice at home. Apart from Hayden’s century and the opening stand, the biggest gain for Australia was Ponting’s return to form. His unbeaten 79 is his tenth fifty-plus score in 34 innings against India. He averages 48.66 against India; the only other team against which he averages less than 50 in Tests is England (48.24).

Jesper Sørensen’s Vancouver Whitecaps were overwhelmed by a dominant Cruz Azul, who claimed their seventh title in the tournament, tying Club América as the most successful club in Champions Cup history.

A brace from Ángel Sepúlveda, along with goals from Ignacio Rivero, Lorenzo Faravelli, and Mateusz Bogusz, powered La Máquina to a commanding win at Estadio Olímpico Universitario.

With this loss, the Whitecaps missed the chance to become the first Canadian team to win the tournament and will not take part in the 2029 Club World Cup or the 2025 Intercontinental Cup.

The Canadian side fell behind early – Rivero opened the scoring in the eighth minute – and never recovered. By halftime, they were already down 4–0. Sepúlveda completed his brace in the 50th minute, sealing the 5–0 scoreline and underlining a night in which Vancouver never found their footing on the pitch in Mexico City.

The Champions Cup remains in Mexico as Vicente Sánchez's Cruz Azul claimed the title with an impressive rout at Estadio Ciudad Universitaria. As a result, Cruz Azul secured their place in the 2029 Club World Cup and the 2025 Intercontinental Cup.

On the other end, Sørensen’s side failed to become the first Canadian team to win the regional championship, and the MLS continues its title drought in the competition, which dates back to 2022.

For Cruz Azul, this victory is hugely important. It silences recent criticism surrounding the potential departure of Sánchez and speculation about the arrival of manager Guillermo Almada, who has now officially parted ways with Pachuca.

Cruz Azul lifted the Champions Cup trophy for the first time since the 2013–2014 season.

The last time they won the tournament, they defeated Deportivo Toluca on away goals after a 1–1 aggregate score over two legs – a format used at the time. The away goals rule gave the edge to claim the title.

Owen and Ferdinand agreed that Kane would have been a game-changer had he signed for Manchester United in place of Bayern.

Though a Premier League return could be on the cards someday, Kane's focus this year will be looking to win the Champions League in addition to defending the Bundesliga title with Bayern. Opportunities galore as Harmanpreet looks to build team for T20 World Cup

“I want this team to grow in a way that everyone says that this is the best team,” says India captain

Sruthi Ravindranath08-Dec-20232:08

Harmanpreet: We need to think about having a third pacer in the side

India have started preparing for the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup and captain Harmanpreet Kaur wants to “build” for the event by giving the new faces in the T20I squad “as many opportunities as possible” to prove themselves on the big stage. The selection, in the end, will not only be about their performances on the field but also how they contribute off it, she said.”Whichever player you play with, you will know how they can contribute to the team just by looking at their body language and the way they think about cricket,” Harmanpreet said ahead of the second T20I against England in Mumbai. “Just like how there’s no surety about anything in life, we also can’t be always sure about a player. At the same time, it’s about how they improve by the day and how they help the team win, all that is important. All that also plays a role in how many opportunities you want to give a player.”In the team there are so many youngsters now who have done well in domestic [cricket] and WPL. We’ve picked those who have done well in T20s. We want to build this team. We have so many matches coming up. As a captain, I want to build this team. The support staff is also balanced now. Amol [Muzumdar, head coach] has so much experience as player and coach. When all these things are sorted, you know that you just need to go out there and play. As a captain, I have a lot of trust and belief. They are the best and that’s why they are here. I want to give them as many opportunities as I can because they are the best right now. I want them to do well for the country.”Allrounder Shreyanka Patil and left-arm spinner Saika Ishaque, who were among the breakout stars at the inaugural WPL this year, received maiden call-ups for the T20Is series against England, while youngsters Titas Sadhu, Kanika Ahuja and Mannat Kashyap have also been named in the squad. Patil and Ishaque made their India debuts in the first T20I, where the hosts lost by 38 runs, and finished with decent returns. Patil bagged two wickets, while Ishaque dismissed the on-song Danni Wyatt for 75.Related

Ishaque, 28, had finished the WPL as the joint-second-highest wicket-taker and was also the top wicket-taker in the Senior Women’s T20 Trophy this season with 18 wickets in nine matches. Twenty-one-year-old Patil, meanwhile, impressed for India A leading up to the T20I series, picking up five wickets in three games. She also had a prolific Women’s CPL in March, where she was the only Indian and ended up being the highest wicket-taker, with nine wickets in five games.Harmanpreet was clear the duo needs to make use of these opportunities to cement their spot at next year’s T20 World Cup, which is slated for September-October in Bangladesh. Following the England series, India are set to play a full series against Australia at home, which includes three T20Is.”The team which we have picked for this T20I [series] is the one we want to build for the upcoming World Cup,” she said. “Saika and Shreyanka have done really well in the last game. They’re quite confident and after the game we did sit with them and discuss what best they can do in the upcoming games. For them, they just need opportunities and so many opportunities are there now. They just need to go out there and execute in the best way.”Saika Ishaque was impressive in WPL 2023•Getty ImagesIndia suffered heartbreak at the T20 World Cup this year, losing to Australia in a close encounter in the semi-final. They also came close in 2018 (semi-final) and 2020 (final). Harmanpreet, who is now a globally recognised player – she is one of BBC’s 100 Women and Time Magazine’s 100 Next this year – has only one thing on her mind: to win a World Cup for India.”I want this team to grow in a way that everyone says that this is the best team,” she said. “For me winning a World Cup is a dream and I’m just working towards that and that is the only reason I requested BCCI to get a young team. These games are very important. England are not going to give us anything easily. So we are putting ourselves under pressure. We want to work hard towards that and I don’t count my personal achievements to any level because I’m playing a team sport. If the team is doing well I’m happy.”At the same time, when you’re not feeling great, you see people are you telling ‘you’ve done this and that’ to make you feel good. For me, team performance and winning a World Cup for the country is very important, and my aim is towards that. I just want us to stay together and grow together and do something great for our country.”In the first T20I, India fielded only two fast bowlers in the XI, whereas the spinners bowled 12 overs and were expensive. Fast bowler Renuka Singh returned to international cricket after close to 10 months and impressed immediately with figures of 3 for 27 while medium pacer Pooja Vastrakar went for 44 runs in her four overs. Sadhu, the other fast bowler in the squad, was out ill. Harmanpreet said that spin was among India’s strong suits and trusted her spinners to come good, adding that Sadhu “should be ready” for the second game to bring more balance to the side.”In our domestic set-up so many spin bowlers are doing really well. It’s something which has always been our strength. Among pacers, Renuka is doing really well, other end Pooja is helping her. At the same time, Titas was not well. She should be ready for the next game and secondly, I feel spinners are more confident and they’ve always done really well whenever they’ve got the opportunity. That’s why we went with the spin attack.”

“We’re rapt to be able to have someone of Danni’s quality in orange,” Scorchers head coach Becky Grundy had said after the draft. “She’s shown in international cricket her ability to float up and down the order so there’s flexibility there.”Scorchers had set out with the aim to stock their top order during the draft with a belief their local players, alongside Devine, could carrying the bowling. The schedule in the women’s game continues to be increasingly busy with recent examples of players starting to pick and choose their tournaments. Smriti Mandhana and Nat Sciver-Brunt did not put their names into the WBBL draft.Speaking to ESPNcricinfo recently, Australia pace bowler Megan Schutt said more players were starting to have conversations about how much cricket they play.”Our schedule as a whole is pretty intimidating to be honest,” Schutt said. “But just having the choice is probably the ultimate opportunity in itself. There’s so many leagues now that if someone does want to do the T20 circuit, that’s bloody awesome.”If they have the body and desire to keep doing that then that’s cool. But it’s definitely daunting and something we’ve discussed with our coaches about how we are going to manage ourselves.”Meanwhile, Brisbane Heat have signed England legspinner Sarah Glenn as cover for New Zealand allrounder Amelia Kerr who will miss the start of the WBBL. Heat knew that Kerr would be unavailable early in the tournament but were always going to take her as their platinum pick.

Ben Stokes rues Old Trafford rain after 'pretty much perfect' performance

Ben Stokes believes England did “literally everything we possibly could” to force a result in the drawn fourth Ashes Test at Emirates Old Trafford, delivering a “pretty much perfect” performance in a game they “completely and utterly” dominated.England led by 275 runs on first innings after winning the toss, bowling Australia out for 317 before racking up 592 in 107.4 overs, and led by 61 runs heading into the final day with Australia five wickets down in their second innings. But after rain had limited the fourth day’s play to 30 overs, it forced a total washout on Sunday, denying England the opportunity to push for victory and leaving Australia 2-1 up heading into the final Test at The Oval next week – thereby retaining the Ashes urn.”The cricket we got in, in this game, was potentially an opportunity for a team to play it safe; to wait and see what the outcome might be,” Stokes said. “We didn’t do that. We definitely didn’t shy away from what we needed to do.”We’re always putting our front foot forward and trying to press the game as hard as we possibly could. As a captain, that’s something that makes me very proud as a leader of the ten other guys out there. It’s just unfortunate that we managed to get three hours in over the last two days.”The draw was the first of Stokes’ tenure as permanent captain, after 12 wins and four defeats in his first 16 Tests in full-time charge. “I think it’s the first draw for us, through no fault of our own,” he said. “We try and take the positive out of these things. We did literally everything we possibly could.”The weather didn’t help us and we can’t change that. It’s a tough pill to swallow, knowing that’s the reason we sit here with a draw, but we’ve done everything we possibly could in the hours of play we managed to get. We were completely and utterly dominant throughout the hours of play we had. It’s a shame, but, oh well.”Ben Stokes believes his team have “already done wonders” for Test cricket in England•Getty Images

When asked to compare how he felt in Manchester to his emotions after England’s defeats in the first two Tests at Edgbaston and Lord’s, Stokes said: “I think they’re completely different.”We obviously played some brilliant cricket in those games, [but] we played some cricket that we knew we could have been better at. But in this game I can’t actually look back and think, ‘We could have been better there’, because we were pretty much perfect throughout the whole game.”Bowling Australia out and then scoring the runs that we did at the pace that we did – I can’t really say we got anything wrong about this game, to be honest. It is tough to say we ended up with a draw when we’ve dominated the cricket that we’ve managed to get in.”Related

England can no longer win the series outright, but can deny Australia a first away Ashes win since 2001 by beating them at The Oval in the fifth Test – just as they did four years ago – which starts on Thursday.”It’s very similar to 2019, when we had to go to The Oval and win to draw the series,” Stokes said. “We’ll have to get over the disappointment of today and then focus on that game. It is a massive game for us and 2-2 sounds a lot better than 3-1.”The mentality and mindset within the dressing-room is to go out and win. Go back to the Pakistan series, where we could have taken it easy in that last game knowing we’d won the series but we didn’t. We still went out with the same mentality of how we wanted to play our cricket.”Every time we walk out on the field, that’s all I encourage the players to do: just concentrate on what you need to do as an individual to influence a game in the right way. If it doesn’t happen, you’ve still got an opportunity to do that in a different way or a different session. Everything we do is to try and be positive and get a result for England.”Stokes acknowledged that a decider at The Oval would have been “a very, very special week in the history of English cricket” but said that his team have “already done wonders” for the sport across the country.”It would have elevated everything that the series has already done for Test cricket, especially in England,” he said. “But I think what we’ve managed to do, up until today anyway, has already done wonders for cricket in England.”I think we’ll still have the support that we have done throughout the series next week. We’ll be treating it as every other game and I hope the support we get will still be there or thereabouts, as if it was 2-2.”
