Emery benches Tielemans in Aston Villa predicted lineup vs Ajax

Aston Villa are getting ready for arguably their biggest fixture of the season thus far as they welcome Ajax to the Midlands for the second leg of their Europa Conference League tie.

Their preparation has not been the best, however, suffering a dismal 4-0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend, with John McGinn seeing red during the second half.

The Scot will be available for the clash tomorrow evening, however, and this is a boost to their chances.

If they do secure a win on Thursday, the fixtures will continue to pile up and this could make rotation key if the club want to finish in the top four of the Premier League this term.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery during a Premier League game.

This could see the Spaniard rejig his starting XI from the Spurs loss with three changes predicted from the weekend as the Eredivisie side travel to England.

1 GK – Emiliano Martínez

The Argentinian may have conceded four goals last weekend, but there is no doubting his stature in the squad, and he will of course retain his place for the clash against Ajax.

Across 36 matches in all competitions this season, Martinez has kept 11 clean sheets – with his most important coming in the first leg.

If he can keep another clean sheet on Thursday, Villa have an excellent chance of progression.

2 RB – Matty Cash

Aston Villa defender Matty Cash.

The defender dropped to the bench for the first leg as Ezri Konsa took over on the right side of the back four last week.

With minutes left, the Englishman was sent off after receiving a second booking, and he will miss this clash, which means Cash will start.

He didn’t have the finest of games against Spurs, being dribbled past on four occasions while losing possession 16 times, so Emery will be looking for him to improve.

3 CB – Pau Torres

The Spaniard played just the opening 45 minutes against Ajax last week, with Emery subbing him as a precaution, but he played the full game against Spurs.

Torres won three of his four duels last week along with making two tackles and one clearance as he was solid throughout.

A similar display this time around could well see Villa claim a place in the quarter-finals as they bid to end their 28-year major trophy drought.

4 CB – Clement Lenglet

Clement Lenglet for Aston Villa

It has taken a while for the on-loan defender to cement his place in the starting XI, but he has proven to be a solid signing.

Lenglet had to wait until the 22nd of December to make his first start in the top flight for the club, but Villa have lost just four times in the league since then. He will play alongside Torres on Thursday evening.

5 LB – Alex Moreno

Aston Villa defender Alex Moreno.

Lucas Digne has started the previous two matches for Villa, but he failed to really impress during the defeat to Spurs.

He completed only five passes during his time on the pitch, along with failing to deliver an accurate cross or successful dribble, and Moreno will replace him.

The Spaniard has made 21 appearances in all competitions this season and, with three goals, the left-back provides a reliable attacking threat.

6 CM – John McGinn

John McGinn

The Scot saw red against Spurs due to a bad challenge on Destiny Udogie in the 65th minute, which means he will miss the next few league ties.

He will be available for the Ajax clash, however, and Emery will unleash him from the start after he was dropped to the bench during the first leg.

7 CM – Douglas Luiz

Aston Villa players including Douglas Luiz

The Brazilian has arguably been the beating heart of the side this season. Not only has he scored ten times so far, but the midfielder has registered eight assists, showcasing his talents from the centre of the pitch.

He is nailed on as a starter and his influence could help the club progress into the last eight, while he will be looking to chip in with a goal or an assist.

8 RW – Leon Bailey

Aston Villa forward Leon Bailey.

The former Bayer Leverkusen winger has been one of the most improved players for Villa this term, becoming a key attacking threat under Emery.

Across 38 matches this term, the Jamaica international has registered 22 goal contributions – 11 goals and 11 assists – and with Emery potentially moving to a 4-2-3-1, he will take his place on the right wing for the tie.

9 AM – Moussa Diaby

Another former Leverkusen star, Diaby, has not quite had the same sort of success as Bailey this season, despite costing Villa £51.9m.

Indeed, the Frenchman has scored just six goals since joining last summer, and been deployed across numerous positions in the process.

His best performances have come from an attacking midfield role and this is where Emery will unleash the £130k-per-week earner.

10 LW – Morgan Rogers

The January signing was thrust into the deep end last week, as Emery unleashed the youngster from the start against Ajax, and he performed fairly well.

The former Middlesbrough starlet succeeded with five of his six dribble attempts as he sought to make his mark on the tie and there is no doubt he terrorised the Ajax backline with his pace.

Rogers was dropped to the bench for the Spurs defeat last weekend, and he will replace Youri Tielemans, who failed to truly showcase his talents in the loss.

The Belgian made just seven passes during his time on the pitch, taking 21 touches too and swapping him for Rogers could see Villa create more chances down the left.

Tottenham officials prepare positive report for signing of £17m forward

Tottenham "officials" are said to have "prepared a positive report for the transfer" of a title-winning forward as their summer plans continue to take shape.

Lange preparing Spurs summer target list

New technical director Johan Lange, who has been working under chairman Daniel Levy and chief football officer Scott Munn since his arrival in November, is already at work on who to sign later in the year.

Tottenham now willing to back Ange with transfer bid for £79m "magician"

Spurs are prepared to make an offer.

ByEmilio Galantini Feb 10, 2024

Reliable Spurs insider and FA registered intermediary Paul O'Keefe has explained that Barcelona star Raphinha is among a host of potential targets who Spurs are exploring right now, coming after they enjoyed a very impressive January window.

Manager Ange Postecoglou's brilliant debut season at N17 was highlighted by Tottenham beating both Bayern Munich and Barcelona to the signings of Radu Dragusin and Lucas Bergvall respectively, which comes as very impressive for a club trophyless since 2008 and not in the Champions League this season.

However, Postecoglou's style has won over plenty of admirers at Spurs, and they're now fierce contenders for a spot in Europe's most prestigious competition next campaign.

The positivity surrounding north London at the moment will do wonders in tempting some of the club's summer targets, who will be watching on with keen interest. Alongside Raphinha, the likes of Genoa star Albert Gudmundsson, Bologna's Riccardo Calafiori, Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo, Atalanta midfielder Teun Koopmeiners and Brentford star Ivan Toney have been linked in the past week alone.

New names are also appearing on a regular basis, as Lange and co cast the Tottenham net wide.

Tottenham set sights on Baris Yilmaz

If reports from Europe are to be believed, Galatasaray midfielder Baris Yilmaz is now on Spurs' radar as well.

The international ace, who won Turkey's Süper Lig crown with Galatasaray last season, has impressed club scouts with his performances this campaign. Yilmaz has bagged three goals and an assist so far, but the versatile winger has become a mainstay and their "star player" overall.

That is according to Sabah, who also claim Spurs officials are said to have "prepared a positive report for the transfer" of Yilmaz. The 23-year-old, who can play centre-forward, has also featured as a right-back and left-back for Galatasaray in what is a pretty enticing draw.

The outlet states he'd cost around £17 million to prise away from Turkey, so the price would also be pretty affordable from a Tottenham perspective. However, perhaps most interestingly, it is believed Spurs discovered Yilmaz almost entirely by accident.

Indeed, the club started taking real note of the player's exploits after first going to check on Tanguy Ndombele's progress on loan at Galatasaray. It will be interesting to see what comes of this, as Yilmaz looks like a really promising asset.

BBC pundit suggests Ange could hand youngster call to Tottenham squad

BBC Radio 5 Live pundit and former Tottenham right-back Alan Hutton has suggested a youngster could be handed a call to Ange Postecoglou's squad this year.

Ange wants Spurs to be dream location for Europe's rising stars

Postecoglou has previously made no secret of the fact that he wants Spurs to become a dream location for some of Europe's rising star talents.

Suggestion Ange doesn't want player with attitude problem at Tottenham

He doesn’t seem to have a future at the club.

ByEmilio Galantini Mar 5, 2024

“We’re building a team. From our perspective, it’s pleasing and hopefully we become a club which is a preferred destination for talented young players," said Postecoglou on Tottenham's appeal to talent.

"There aren’t too many hidden gems around — everyone knows who the talents are. Hopefully our point of difference, I’ve always felt your football is your biggest selling point, beyond anything else. Hopefully we’re showing evidence of that which is helping us.”

Over the January window, technical director Johan Lange and co attempted to make that wish a reality by attempting to win the race for Club Brugge starlet Antonio Nusa.

While they were eventually beaten to the punch by Brentford, who could seemingly offer a more straight forward first team pathway, the Norway starlet eventually failed his medical and his future will once again be a hot topic of discussion this summer.

One big saving grace for Spurs, though, was their capture of highly-rated Swedish starlet Lucas Bergvall. The Lilywhites beat Barcelona to the 18-year-old's signing, and he is currently pulling up trees back out on loan at Djurgardens IF before he links up with Postecoglou in the summer.

Hutton tips potential Tottenham squad chance for Bergvall

Reports have suggested that Bergvall could go straight into the first team, with Hutton now hinting Bergvall's call straight to the Tottenham squad is indeed a possibility, but he'll have to impress the manager.

“They do their scouting on all these players and they know the quality that they have,” Hutton told Tottenham News.

“There’s going to be a moment of brilliance, we see it with different people’s goals where you think ‘Oh my goodness, that’s just incredible’ and this is obviously the same.

“But I think it’s more about what is his all-round performance like. What has he been like after 10 or 15 games? Has he shown that quality that you need to hit the ground running?

“I’m not exactly sure how it’s going to work. Is he coming in for pre-season with a view to going away with Tottenham and then seeing where it takes him? I think that’s probably the view forward.

“Then Ange will make his mind up over whether he sees him in the squad this year or in future years. So it’s really down to him and how he progresses from now until the end of the season and then into pre-season."

'Needs to do a lot better' – Gary Lineker dishes out advice to 'plodding' Harry Kane after England captain is taken off against Denmark at Euro 2024

Gary Lineker had some advice for a "plodding" Harry Kane after the England captain was taken off against Denmark at Euro 2024.

  • Kane got on the scoresheet against Denmark
  • Struggled to make an impact as the game wore on
  • Lineker says his movement was minimal
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

In a candid assessment following England's 1-1 draw with Denmark at Euro 2024, former England striker and BBC pundit Gary Lineker called for a significant improvement from Kane. Despite scoring England's only goal, Kane's overall performance left much to be desired, prompting Lineker to advise manager Gareth Southgate to demand more from the team captain.

  • Getty Images

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Kane's contributions beyond the goal were minimal, as he struggled to make a significant impact on the game. This was not an isolated incident; Kane faced similar challenges in England's 1-0 victory over Serbia in their opening group game, where his presence was largely peripheral.

  • WHAT LINEKER SAID

Speaking on BBC Sport, Lineker outlined specific areas where Kane needs to improve. He said: "As a striker you have two jobs, score goals, which Harry Kane has been good at all his career, and make space. He needs his manager to come to him and ask a little bit more of him. I would have expected that if I'd put in that kind of performance. Against a back three he has to stretch the play, run one way and then come short so you don't have to come too far to receive it. He needs to make more space for the midfield players behind him to create chances."

Lineker did not mince words when critiquing Kane's movement, describing it as "minimal" and "lethargic."

"In all honesty, Harry Kane needs to do a lot better," he added. "His movement was minimal. He didn't look to go behind and he doesn't often, but even when he comes short he's drifting short very lethargically, he's plodding short and that's not going to help."

Kane's underwhelming performance led to his substitution in the 70th minute, with Ollie Watkins coming on as his replacement. This change underscored Southgate's recognition of the need for more dynamism and energy up front. However, the broader issue of how to best utilize Kane remains a pressing concern for Southgate and his coaching staff.

Liverpool could sign £40m "rock" who’s even better than Inacio

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been here before, in the Premier League title race after the new year and knowing that the terrifying force that is Manchester City linger just behind, ready to capitalise on the slightest setback.

Still, the Reds are in first place after 20 matches and will be confident that they can stay in contention for a shot at silverware right until the very end, though there is likely an acceptance that the January transfer window might need to be utilised to strengthen the squad.

Arsenal have suffered a blip in form of late and Pep Guardiola's side has been somewhat out of sorts so far (write them off at your peril), while Aston Villa's surprise title-chasing form puts them in the conversation.

£18m-a-year Liverpool star now leaning towards contract extension

This would be huge for Liverpool…

ByTom Cunningham Jan 4, 2024

All are in with a shout, and given that Liverpool's backline is somewhat thin – even if it is formidable – then this is surely the area that Klopp needs to target over the coming weeks, bolstering the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and co.

Liverpool transfer news – Jean-Clair Todibo

According to French newspaper Monaco-Matin – via Paisley Gates – Liverpool have shifted their focus on OGC Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo as Klopp searches for a viable new option in central defence.

Chelsea, Newcastle United, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur all have a vested interest in the France international, though it is understood that he would command a fee of £40m and this has dissuaded several of the aforementioned suitors.

Given Liverpool's acquisitions of Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo across recent winter windows, there's a possibility that a deal could be struck, and it's down to Klopp and technical director Jorg Schmadtke to assess the feasibility of a formal offer.

Jean-Clair Todibo's season so far

Once described as the "complete package" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Todibo has been a mainstay for a Nice side this term that are deservedly sat in second place in Ligue 1 with the best defensive record after 17 matches, with just nine goals conceded from 17 fixtures.

Typically found on the right side of the central defence, Todibo, aged 23, has been crucial in this feat after impressing with his blend of passing ability and defensive application, building on his previous performances and being rewarded with his Les Bleus debut in September.

As per Sofascore, Todibo has featured 14 times in the French top flight and has kept eight clean sheets, a rather remarkable record, completing 91% of his passes, averaging 1.9 tackles, 3.2 clearances and a whopping 7.9 ball recoveries per game, succeeding with 71% of his dribbles and 65% of his aerial battles.

His veteran defensive partner, Dante, spoke effusively to discuss his rise and improvements, revealing that his mixture of qualities allowed his brazen-at-times style to flourish.

Dante said: "He always played a risky game, far too risky. Now he has found real balance in his game between taking risks, dribbling out from the back because it’s the best thing to do and having fun on the pitch! I’m not saying he should kick the ball out into touch, never! I’d rather he takes a risk. And he’s progressed in that domain!"

Such traits have set him aside from the lion's share of defenders in Europe and have attracted the attention of ambitious outfits in the Premier League, who no doubt view that 'complete' modern style as something worth pursuing.

As per FBref, Todibo ranks among the top 15% of centre-halves across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for pass completion, the top 17% for progressive passes, the top 6% for passes attempted, successful take-ons and tackles and the top 18% for interceptions per 90.

The £20k-per-week titan is considered to be a "Rolls-Royce" of a player journalist Antonio Mango and would be a worthy addition at Anfield, especially so given the fact that Joel Matip's knee injury has ruled him out for the season – with the Cameroonian currently set for departure in June to compound his situation.

Todibo would be the perfect heir, and could even prove to be a better purchase than Goncalo Inacio, who has also been linked with a move to Liverpool.

Why Liverpool should sign Jean-Clair Todibo over Goncalo Inacio

Mere days ago, Portuguese media speculated that Liverpool are frontrunners for Sporting CP star Inacio's signature and have even tabled an official bid, though given the lack of reputable corroboration this should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Nonetheless, the interest is unquestionable and it's clear to see why Inacio – aged 22 – is such a sought-after commodity, with his level of creativity something that perhaps no other natural centre-back can quite replicate.

Indeed, the dynamic defenders ranks among the top 8% of positional peers across divisions similar to the Liga Portugal for assists, the top 5% for shot-creating actions, the top 13% for pass completion, the top 1% for passes attempted and progressive passes, the top 3% for progressive carries and the top 6% for successful take-ons per 90.

lucas-beraldo-goncalo-inacio-liverpool-opinion

Now, these are incredible metrics and it wouldn't be a bad piece of business to meet Inacio's €60m (£52m) release clause, even if this might seem a little expensive.

And Inacio's left-footed style is something that Liverpool have been searching for too; in this regard, he holds an advantage over Todibo.

But the Les Aiglons phenom is no wayward distributor and he has an inventive approach that Liverpool could benefit from, with his defensive metrics also superior.

Inacio, for example, averages one tackle, 5.4 recoveries and 1.9 clearances in the Portuguese top flight this term while only succeeding in 47% of his contested duels. – which hardly evokes confidence in his solidity.

Further, a glance at the type of player Todibo is comparable with only enriches the argument that he is the man for the job, with a variegated approach that has now left him "solid as a rock", as was said by Kulig.

Also ostensibly cheaper, Todibo would be the better option for transfer and this is who Klopp must invest time and effort into signing this winter, ahead of the crucial business end of the campaign.

Liverpool to push to sign "excellent" £50m+ Goncalo Inacio in coming days

Liverpool are reportedly pressing ahead with some potentially exciting January transfer business, with the Reds set to move for an "excellent" player in the coming days.

Liverpool's defensive issues

Jurgen Klopp has built arguably the strongest squad he has ever had during his time at Anfield, with so much depth across most positions. It has ensured that there is always quality to come off the substitutes' bench in games, playing a key role in the Merseysiders so often leaving it late to win matches this season.

One area of the pitch that is suddenly looking a little lighter is centre-back, however, due to the ACL injury suffered by Joel Matip in the 4-3 victory at home to Fulham earlier this month. The 32-year-old won't play again this season – he could have featured for the Reds for the last time unless he signs a new deal next summer – and it leaves Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate under big pressure to stay fit.

Joe Gomez and Jarell Quansah are options, too, but Klopp may not want either starting regularly in the Premier League, in terms of his side going all the right in an exciting title race. There is a chance that Liverpool could look to seal the signing of a new central defender during the January transfer window, with Crystal Palace and England ace Marc Guehi one player who has been linked with a move to Anfield recently. He isn't the only rumoured target, however, and a key claim has emerged regarding another individual.

Liverpool pushing to sign Goncalo Inacio

According to a new transfer update from Record [via Paisley Gates], Liverpool will push to sign Goncalo Inacio in the coming days, with the Reds sending a scout to watch him in Europa League action for Sporting CP against Sturm Graz.

lucas-beraldo-goncalo-inacio-liverpool-opinion

In that game, the Portuguese defender actually scored twice, and Liverpool's interest is now "certainly" expected to go up a gear next week. Newcastle United are also believed to be interested in securing a move for the centre-back, whose release clause of €60m (£51.6m) can be triggered.

Inacio has been mentioned as a possible target for big English clubs for some time now, so the Reds signing him could be a massive coup, given his reputation as a player.

Inacio is already an undisputed key player for Sporting, making 143 appearances despite still only being 22, and his long-term potential means that he could end up growing into one of the best players in Europe in his position. Football talent scout Jacek Kulig has described him as an "excellent central defender", and in truth, £50m+ could feel like a steal, considering some of the money being spent in the modern game.

Whether Liverpool wait until the summer to make a move for the Sporting ace remains to be seen, and while it is admirable for Klopp to potentially want to show faith in his current players between now and the end of the season, there may be real risk involved there, with an injury to Van Dijk something that would be disastrous, especially with nobody brought in.
