Stuart Broad enjoyed a hugely memorable Test match as England sealed a 2-1 series win over West Indies at Old Trafford. He picked up a 10-wicket match haul, the Player-of-the-Match award, and along the way his 500th Test wicket as well. That performance has also catapulted Broad seven places on the ICC Test bowlers’ rankings, up to No. 3 – a position he last occupied nearly four years ago, in August 2016.Broad is the lone England bowler in the top ten, behind Australia’s Pat Cummins and sandwiched between the New Zealand pair of Neil Wagner (No. 2) and Tim Southee (No. 4). West Indies captain Jason Holder, who took 10 wickets in the three Tests against England at an average of 30.10, completes the top five.Other big movers in the ICC rankings after the England-West Indies series are Rory Burns, who has moved up 13 spots in the Test batting rankings to No. 17, and Ollie Pope, who has gone up 24 places to No. 46.
With the club still without a replacement for Dan Ashworth, Newcastle United are reportedly in advanced talks to finally put an end to any speculation and seal their next sporting director.
Newcastle transfer news
Ashworth – on gardening leave since links with a move to Manchester United emerged – looks destined for Old Trafford. His departure is undoubtedly a large blow for Newcastle, who never really got the chance to see Ashworth in his true transfer element, having had so much success at Brighton & Hove Albion previously. One of the most highly-rated in his role, replacing Ashworth was never going to be an easy task.
With the summer transfer window fast approaching, however, the Magpies have seemingly made their move to land a replacement once and for all. According to Sky Sports, Newcastle have held advanced talks to sign Dougie Freedman from Crystal Palace. The sporting director has enjoyed an impressive spell on a budget at Selhurst Park, with his eye for talent clear.
Newcastle need to cut their losses on star who's worth less than Longstaff

The frontrunner to now land the Newcastle role ahead of Johannes Spors, Freedman's first task will be to help those at St James' Park put an end to their squad depth troubles and take the side back into the Premier League's top four.
To sum up just how impressive Freedman has been at Palace, he was the man responsible for the arrivals of Eberechi Eze for £20m, Michael Olise for £8m and Marc Guehi for £18m. Worth a combined £46m when they first signed, Eze and Olise now reportedly have a price tag of £60m, whilst Guehi's sits at a reported £50m. From £46m, Freedman's signings could now be sold for a combined £170m.
It is the type of buisness that would see Newcastle avoid any issues with the Premier League's Financial Fair Play rules, whilst building Eddie Howe a young and exciting team.
"Brilliant" Freedman can fill Ashworth void
Ashworth initially earned plaudits at Brighton for his work on a budget to produce such an impressive squad which has come on even further leaps and bounds ever since. Now, Freedman has created a similar reputation and his history of landing bargain deals would go a long way when it comes to avoiding the sale of top stars at St James' Park.
There's no doubt that Crystal Palace owner Steve Parish will be disappointed if Freedman, however, having handed him significant praise earlier this season. Parish said via Sportskeeda: "[He’s been] really important. He’s a brilliant guy. He was the second manager I had at the club.
"He was instrumental in us getting promoted. He’s been instrumental, he saved the club [as a player] when we were about to get relegated from the Championship with a last-minute goal at Stockport. He got us promoted while playing for Wolves."
Four teams will contest the women’s challenge, and concussion substitutes will make an appearance
Nagraj Gollapudi28-Jan-2020For the first time, a one-off all-star fixture, comprising players from all the eight franchises, will precede the IPL. The match will be played three days before the tournament’s opening match, which, as reported in December, is will be played on March 29. Both the opening match and the IPL final will be played in Mumbai, the home base of defending champions Mumbai Indians.ESPNcricinfo understands that the two teams for the all-star match are likely to be formed with players from the four franchises in the north and east of India – Kings XI Punjab, Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders – and the four teams in the south and west – Chennai Super Kings, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai. No venue has been finalised for the match yet.It appears that the idea of the all-star match came from BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and IPL governing council chairman Brijesh Patel. Both were present at the governing council meeting on Monday in New Delhi where the decision was made.Timings of evening matches unchangedOne of the key points discussed at the meeting concerned the start timings for the evening matches, an issue both the IPL and host broadcaster Star India have been discussing over the past few years. It is understood that Star wanted an earlier start than 8pm IST, because many matches stretch past midnight. However, several teams pointed out that starting early could hand the advantage to one team because of dew.Consequently, the IPL decided to leave the timing for the evening matches unchanged. Ganguly also said that there would just be four double-headers [days with both an afternoon and an evening match] in the 2020 IPL, continuing with the trend established over the past few years to reduce the number of day matches with the tournament being played in summer. The IPL did not announce the main tournament schedule even though the tournament is starting in two months’ time. BCCI officials did not reveal the reason for the delay, but it is learnt that the schedule is likely to be out later this week. One plausible reason could be to the late arrival of the Australia, England and New Zealand players. As per the availability periods listed pre-IPL auction, players from these three countries will arrive after March 31, as they would be busy with various bilateral series as well as the Sheffield Shield final.Four teams for women’s T20 exhibition matchesTaking another step forward towards a women’s IPL, the BCCI has decided to add another team to the women’s T20 exhibition matches it has been conducting over the last two IPL seasons. In 2018, two teams – Supernovas and Trailblazers – contested a one-off exhibition match, which finished in a last-ball thriller. Last year, a third team – Velocity – was added with four matches hosted in Jaipur, which ran parallel to the main IPL playoffs. For the 2020 season, a fourth team, not named yet, has been added to the mix. It is understood there will be seven matches, including the final, that are likely to be scheduled once again around the IPL playoffs.No-ball umpires get the nodThe IPL has also decided to let an off-field match official to supervise no-balls. The move is bound to be welcomed by the players considering the errors by on-field umpires over the years that have left many captains fuming.Last IPL, Virat Kohli, leading the Royal Challengers in a crucial match against Mumbai, called the umpiring standards “ridiculous” and club standard. Incidentally, the no-ball delivered by Lasith Malinga went undetected by S Ravi, one of the on-field umpires who was removed from the ICC’s Elite Panel last year.Taking cognizance of the players’ complaints, the IPL had discussed the issue last year, with Patel saying that an exclusive match official, separate to the TV and fourth umpire, would be in charge of supervising no-balls. Late last year, the ICC opted to reintroduce the no-ball umpire on a trial basis. The ICC, however, had entrusted the job to the regular TV umpire.Concussion substitutes to be introducedThe IPL governing council also approved the move to allow concussion substitutes from the 2020 edition. The match referee will be the final authority on who could come in as a substitute with the option of disallowing replacements if they are deemed not to be like-for-like.

West Ham United shared the points with Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon but VAR has provoked consternation inside the Hammers support once again, a late winner chalked off after the longest VAR check in Premier League history.
Frankly, West Ham have seen a catalogue of decisions – four, to be precise – go against them in the video assistant room over the past two weeks, and there's validity in the club feeling a little aggrieved.
Morgan Rogers
But let's not forget, David Moyes' side are performing quite well at the moment and were worth their salt in the draw against fourth-placed Villa, with Jarrod Bowen at the centre of the action once again.
Why Jarrod Bowen starred vs Aston Villa
It was Bowen's inswinging corner that allowed Michail Antonio to barrel in his second of the day, only for the strike to be chalked off, the veteran striker adjudged to have handled.
Still, Bowen was lively all game and caused real problems for the Villan defence and shot-stopper Emi Martinez, tweaking his role of late as he shifts back into the right wing, supplementing frontman Antonio.

The 33-year-old's return from injury has pumped cohesion back into the outfit, and Bowen thrived in creating and causing a threat down the wing, proving his dynamism and multi-functionality given that he has plundered 18 goals from 37 matches across all competitions this season.
But Sunday's match proved something that might seem strange. While Bowen has been West Ham's most effective and most influential forward this season, he's not actually the most important player under Moyes' wing – that's Edson Alvarez, the man in the middle.
Why Edson Alvarez is West Ham's most important player
After another brilliant performance at the weekend, the Independent's Malik Ouzia handed Alvarez an 8/10 match rating, writing: 'Outstanding at the base of midfield, covering the ground that allowed the front-four to press on. Booked and now faces a two-game ban in what will be a huge blow.'
Edson Alvarez for West Ham
Alvarez was monstrous, completing 94% of his passes, winning four duels, making two tackles, three clearances and one interception and succeeding with five of his six attempted long balls, as per Sofascore.
Effectively the like-for-like replacement for Declan Rice last summer, Alvarez has cemented himself as the glue in the West Ham engine room following his £35m arrival from Ajax, with The Athletic's Roshane Thomas even pronouncing him the club's "best summer signing" despite the success of Mohammed Kudus and the creativity of James Ward-Prowse.
But what makes him so important? As per FBref, the 26-year-old ranks among the top 14% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for tackles, the top 20% for interceptions, the top 4% for blocks, the top 1% for clearances and the top 30% for aerial wins per 90.
Edson Alvarez.
He also averages 5.5 ball recoveries, 2.5 clearances and 4.9 successful duels per game in the Premier League this season, with steely anchoring abilities that make him a singular star at the heart of West Ham's system.
The Mexican's booking against Aston Villa means that he will suspended against the upcoming Premier League fixtures against Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur.
Chalkboard
Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.
It cannot be understated how big of a blow this will be. The fact remains that he is now undroppable. Unfortunately, the forthcoming period of football will be contested without his command. Enter Kalvin Phillips?
Cameron Green helped lift Western Australia after an afternoon collapse against Cameron Gannon

Shaun Marsh continues his good form•Getty Images
Shaun Marsh continued his tantalising form with another half century but a skilful spell of seam bowling from Cameron Gannon helped Queensland restrict Western Australia on an even first day of the Sheffield Shield clash at the Gabba.Marsh, playing his 100th Shield match for Western Australia, salvaged the visitors innings with a sumptuous 77 after they had slumped to 2 for 2 in the third over having been sent in to bat.Marsh struck 13 elegant boundaries in his 167-ball innings. He looked set for another hundred but fell just after tea, getting an inside edge onto pad to be caught at short leg off Mitch Swepson.Marsh now has scores of 77, 82, 85, 85 and 214 in 10 innings for Western Australia across both the Marsh Cup and the Shield this summer although it is unlikely he will be recalled to the Test team. After Marsh’s departure, Western Australia collapsed at the hands of Gannon. Having lured Sam Whiteman into a false drive with his first ball of the day Gannon returned after tea to take three more wickets and leave Western Australia struggling at 7 for 171, having been 2 for 120 prior to tea following a 118-run stand between Marcus Stoinis (44) and Marsh. However, Queensland would not take another wicket for the day with promising allrounder Cameron Green and Jhye Richardson combining for an unbeaten 84-run partnership before bad light stopped play. Green looked very comfortable in making his maiden first-class half-century in his 11th innings and he got good support from Richardson who remained 35 not out.Earlier, there were further concerns for Test aspirant Cameron Bancroft who was caught at leg gully for a duck. It is the third time in three Shield matches he has been dismissed in such fashion.
Newcastle United have progressed massively over the course of the last 18 months under current boss Eddie Howe, with the club reaching the Champions League for the first time in 20 years.
The Magpies were taken over by the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) in 2021, with their huge investment allowing the club to go from relegation candidates to consistent European challengers.
However, this season, the club have regressed, with the squad often hampered by multiple first-team members struggling with injuries and fitness for long periods.
Joelinton and Joe Willock are just two of the Magpies squad that have spent months on the sidelines, with Newcastle's league position taking a hit as a result.
Despite this, the club are stocked in the midfield department, with the PIF's investment allowing for players such as Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali just two examples of the calibre of players within Howe's squad.
The board's investment has seen multiple fan favourites depart St James' Park, including one midfielder who captured the hearts of the fanbase in a turbulent few years for the club.
Jonjo Shelvey's stats at Newcastle United
Midfielder Jonjo Shelvey joined Newcastle for a fee in the region of £12m in January 2016, with the former Swansea City man becoming an instant hit with the Magpies fanbase.
He made 16 appearances for the club during the second half of the 2015/16 season, but he couldn't prevent the Magpies from relegation as the club dropped into the Championship.
However, Shelvey stayed put at St James' Park and helped the club secure an immediate return to the top flight. He made 42 appearances in England's second tier that season, with the midfielder a real driving force under Rafael Benitez.
The next few years for the club were up-and-down, to say the least, with owner Mike Ashley subject to protests from the fanbase over his lack of investment in the transfer market.
Nevertheless, the lack of investment allowed Shelvey to cement his place as a regular starter, with the former England international wearing the armband on multiple occasions.
He remained a crucial part of the Magpies team until the takeover, with the midfielder rapidly dropping down the pecking order, subsequently leaving the club to gain consistent first-team minutes.
However, the club did the right thing in selling Shelvey when they did, with his career and market value dropping rapidly after he departed from St James' Park.
Jonjo Shelvey's market value in 2024
The 32-year-old swapped Newcastle for Nottingham, joining fellow Premier League side Nottingham Forest in January 2023 – a move that was a disaster for both parties.
Shelvey only made eight Premier League appearances for the Reds last season, before a bust-up with manager Steve Cooper saw him train away from the first-team squad.
His £80k-p/w contract at the City Ground was terminated after just six months, with Shelvey joining Turkish side Caykur Rizespor, where he's made 24 appearances this season, scoring on two occasions.
His market value in 2024 has dropped to £3m, with the midfielder now worth less than Newcastle flop Matt Targett, with the Magpies doing the right thing selling Shelvey whilst his value was still of a decent figure.

WHAT ANDRICH SAID
Speaking in a YouTube chat with Germany team-mate David Raum, he said: "I love mealworms. They are a good source of protein. In fact I don't just love them – I think they are awesome."

With Everton still facing the very real prospect of Premier League relegation, the focus has naturally been on those who could jump a sinking ship at Goodison Park, rather than those who may arrive in the summer. However, if the Toffees do avoid the drop come May, then they could reportedly move to sign a Europa League winner.
Everton transfer news
As much as Sean Dyche will be pleased with the form of Amadou Onana and Jarrad Branthwaite this season, that form could come at a cost for the former Burnley manager. According to reports, Arsenal are interested in signing Onana this summer and Everton, if they are relegated, may be forced to watch on as the Belgian departs.
Everton midfielder Amadou Onana.
The same can be said for Branthwaite, who has reportedly attracted the interest of Tottenham Hotspur and even European giants Real Madrid in what could be a dream move for the central defender. The sales could at least help the Toffees reinforce their squad though, and avoid another Financial Fair Play punishment whilst doing so. Those at Goodison Park have already been charged twice this season, with the first resulting in a 10-point deduction and the second punishment still awaiting.
Everton eyeing "unbelievable" player who could now be transfer listed
The Toffees look primed to make their move.
ByTom Cunningham Feb 15, 2024
Among the players who could come in potentially using money gained through sales is Filip Kostic. According to TuttoJuve, Everton are interested in signing Kostic this summer, beating West Ham United and clubs in Saudi Arabia to the winger's signature in the process. The deal wouldn't come with a hefty fee, either, with Juventus reportedly willing to accept deals between €10m to €15m (£9m to £13m).
Kostic, now 31 years of age, is a player with plenty of experience to add to Everton's left-hand side currently occupied by Dwight McNeil, having previously played for Eintracht Frankfurt, where he won the Europa League to earn Juventus' interest.
"Mentality monster" Kostic would boost Everton
If Everton avoid relegation this season, then their attention should turn towards a solid mid-table finish and beyond in the next campaign. After all, without their 10-point deduction this season, they would be sitting comfortably nine points clear of the dropzone. Adding a player who's performed on the European stage in the form of Kostic would certainly play a part in achieving that goal too.
The winger was handed plenty of praise during his Frankfurt days, including from former teammate Kevin Trapp, who labelled Kostic a "mentality monster". Whilst the 29-year-old has stuttered at times since joining Juventus, Kostic's stats at Frankfurt speak for themselves about just how good he can be when at his best.

A deal worth under £20m, Everton could even land an underrated bargain if they manage to fend off interest from the likes of West Ham and secure Kostic's signature this summer. First, of course, they must avoid relegation, but then they could turn their attention towards the Europa League-winning winger, making this one to watch.
