Patidar, bowlers keep RCB in playoffs race with NRR-boosting win

A fifth successive win not only kept Royal Challengers Bengaluru in contention for a playoffs spot but also lifted them to fifth spot on the points table, just above Delhi Capitals who have the same points as RCB but an inferior net run rate. The M Chinnaswamy had gone all quiet when RCB lost Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli inside four overs. It seemed their batting troubles from the start of the season had come back to haunt them. Will Jacks and Rajat Patidar put to rest any such worries with a counter-attacking partnership, but the DC bowlers struck back with a near-perfect death-overs show to restrict RCB to 187 for 9.With the Bengaluru crowd firmly behind them, the RCB bowlers had their tails up. They reduced DC to 30 for 4, which included the massive wicket of Jake Fraser-McGurk, who was run out at the non-striker’s end after a straight drive from Shai Hope deflected off Yash Dayal’s fingers onto the stumps.

The Kohli-Ishant duel lights up the start

In his 250th IPL outing, Kohli had a relatively easy opponent first up: Ishant Sharma, against whom he had scored 93 off 67 balls without being dismissed. He kept out a sharp inswinger on the first ball of the match and then pulled one over square leg for a six on the last ball of the opening over.Ishant Sharma had the last laugh in his duel against Virat Kohli•BCCI

In Ishant’s next over, he hit a four – via an outside edge – and a crisply-timed no-look shot over wide long-on for a six off successive balls before nicking one behind to the wicketkeeper. With a 13-ball 27, Kohli made his intent clear but failed to do justice to the Midas touch he seemed to be in.

Patidar and Jacks make DC pay

Before Sunday, Patidar had been dismissed by pace in eight of his 11 outings in IPL 2024. But here, he raced to 15 off eight balls with the help of three fours in a Mukesh Kumar over. When Axar Patel, the stand-in captain for DC, brought himself on in the sixth over, Patidar duly slogged him over deep midwicket. He also tore into Kuldeep Yadav, bashing him straight over his head.At the other end, Jacks also hit Kuldeep for a six in each of his first two overs as RCB put the dismissals of their openers behind them. Thanks to the assault from Patidar and Jacks, RCB scored 49 in the four overs after the powerplay. In the process, Patidar brought up his fourth half-century in his last five innings, and his first in Bengaluru this season. That the fielders missed four chances in 11 balls, including two dropped catches in a Kuldeep over, did not help DC.

DC fight back through Khaleel, Salam

DC brought Rasikh Salam on in the 11th over and he could have dismissed Patidar first ball but Axar failed to hang on at cover. But Salam exacted revenge in his next over with a hard-length ball. Patidar looked to force it over the off side off the front foot but ended up miscuing it towards cover, where Axar moved to his right to pouch that. That brought curtains to his 88-run stand with Jacks, who fell soon after to Kuldeep.Khaleel Ahmed came away with 4-0-31-2•BCCI

But Mahipal Lomror and Cameron Green combined to take 22 off Kuldeep’s final over, the 17th of the innings, to raise RCB’s hopes. Khaleel Ahmed, who was taken for 23 in his first two overs, struck twice in three balls in the 18th over to dismiss Lomror and Dinesh Karthik. He finished with figures of 2 for 31 from his four overs. Salam got rid of Swapnil Singh and returned 2 for 23 from his three. DC conceded only 40 in the last four overs, and picked up five wickets, to keep RCB under 200 on a surface where the ball was gripping.

Axar fights a lone battle

Fraser-McGurk played true to his form and struck left-arm spinner Swapnil for a massive six over wide long-off to get going. Among those who have faced at least 30 balls of spin in IPL 2024, no batter strikes it higher than Fraser-McGurk’s 262.85. But a lucky break for RCB meant the DC opener walked back cheaply. This was after David Warner, back in the side after missing four matches, was out for 1 off two. Dayal had bounced out Abishek Porel cheaply. It was only the second time this season that RCB picked up four wickets inside the powerplay – earlier, they had done so against Sunrisers Hyderabad. In the middle overs, RCB seamers had a clear plan of hitting the good length and denying the batters room to free their arms. Between overs eight and 11, they bowled 16 deliveries on either good length or just short of it, and gave away just 15 runs off them.Only Axar, leading for the first time in the IPL, managed to offer some resistance with his second half-century of the season. He bookended Jacks’ only over with sixes to bring up his fifty off 30 balls. But long before he top-edged Dayal over backward point, where du Plessis back-tracked and took a tumbling catch, the result was a foregone conclusion.

Head named co-vice-captain as Australia look to 'future-proof' leadership stocks

Australia’s World Test Championship final and ODI World Cup hero Travis Head has formally been elevated to co-vice-captain in Australia’s Test team alongside Steven Smith, with current captain Pat Cummins saying that he has all the makings of a future Test leader as they try to future-proof the leadership stocks within Australian cricket.Head, 29, was added to Australia’s leadership group on Wednesday, just a day out from the first Test against Pakistan in Perth, as Cummins also revealed Australia’s XI with only one change being made from the last Test they played back in July at The Oval against England: Nathan Lyon returns from injury in place of Todd Murphy as the lone spinner.Smith remains the senior vice-captain and will continue to be the first choice to stand in for Cummins when required. Smith has stood in for Cummins in four separate Test matches over the last two years when Cummins has missed matches for a variety of reasons, having also captained Australia in 34 Tests between 2014 and 2018.Related

Head had previously been a co-vice-captain of the Test team alongside Cummins when Tim Paine was captain. The pair was named as Paine’s new deputies in February 2019, replacing the previous co-vice-captains in Mitchell Marsh and Josh Hazlewood, who had been installed in the roles in October 2018 following a team vote in the aftermath of the sandpaper scandal. But Head, like Marsh and Hazlewood, lost the title when he lost his Test place after being dropped from the side during the 2019-20 home series against India. But his stunning run of form over the last two years across all formats has Head well-entrenched in the side, despite briefly being controversially left out for the first Test in India earlier this year. Cummins confirmed the move had been made with an eye to the future.”Really excited to have Trav on board as the co-vice-captain,” Cummins said on Wednesday. “He’s been playing for a long time. He’s always been a leader in our group. So we thought it was a good time to formally recognise that. Whilst nothing’s imminent, Steve’s not going to play forever. I daresay I’m not going to captain forever. So we feel like we’ve got some responsibility to future-proof the team and start trying to give opportunities to other leaders.Cummins is entering his third year as Test captain having been appointed in November 2021. He has consistently noted that he will not have a long tenure as captain despite an incredible run of success that has included winning the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup this year. Meanwhile, Smith is 34 and highly unlikely to be the permanent captain again.

Head looms as one of the leading candidates to be Australia’s next long-term skipper post-Cummins. He had long been groomed as a future leader within Australian cricket having been elevated to captain South Australia in Sheffield Shield cricket at the tender age of 21. He has led South Australia in 62 Shield matches, including two Shield finals in his first three seasons. He has also captained his state in 27 List A matches including two Marsh Cup finals and led Adelaide Strikers to a BBL title in 2017-18. He has captained Australia A in eight List A games and one first-class match between 2018 and 2020 and even led Worcestershire in a List A game in 2018.While Cummins stopped short of confirming that Head was the heir apparent, the captain noted that his own experience as a vice-captain had helped his transition to the role exponentially.”It doesn’t guarantee anything,” Cummins said. “But we’re giving him a good opportunity. So when you look through the candidates for future captains, of course, he’s going to be right up there. And I know in my last couple years before I became captain, being in some of those conversations as a vice-captain really helped fast-track my readiness. So down the track, it might be Trav, it might be someone else, but we want to make sure they’re as prepared as they can be.”Travis Head, here with Scott Boland and Alex Carey, was one of Australia’s stars of the WTC final•ICC/Getty Images

Cummins noted that Head was a popular member of the team but had greater tactical nous than he was given credit for, which is part of the reason for his elevation.”I think the personality that he brings to the team is something that we all love,” Cummins said. “And I think you see it in the way he plays his cricket. There’s a certain amount of freedom to it. He takes the game on. He enjoys it. He’s always got a smile on his face. He never takes anything too seriously. He’s great at bringing the team together for team morale, for putting his arm around players that need it.”Sometimes you can mistake that for someone who’s not a deep thinker about the game, but I think tactically, he’s excellent. So he’s got all the makings of a really strong leader like we’ve seen him do for South Australia for quite a few years and we’re making that a little bit more formal around the Aussie team.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The player reportedly met with Fenerbahce boss Jose Mourinho and the club made a verbal approach to PSG, but it is not yet known if he will make the move to Istanbul. The ex-Real Madrid star's arrival would provide a boost for the Super Lig side, who are also expected to complete the signing of Jhon Duran from Al-Nassr.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Asensio fell out of favour at PSG under Luis Enrique last season and was eventually loaned to Aston Villa in February, where he scored eight goals in 21 matches in all competitions. He has one year left on his contract in Paris.

Fulham in contact to sign £30m ex-Real Madrid ace who's seen as "perfect"

Fulham have reached out and made contact over signing a former Real Madrid player, as Marco Silva’s side begin planning for next season.

Fulham competing for European qualification

Just seven points separate ninth from fourth in this hotly-contested Premier League race for Europe, and Fulham are still in with every chance of competing in the Conference League, Europa League or even the Champions League.

While the latter competition is unlikely, Silva will be looking to end the season as strongly as possible to give Fulham the best chance to see their names in the Europa or Conference draws next season.

Tottenham are looking at Silva as a potential replacement for Ange Postecoglou, and if they decide he’s the right man for the job, then this could well be the 47-year-old’s final season at Craven Cottage.

The tactician will want to end his Fulham career on a high if he does decide to part company, and what better way than sealing a European qualification place? After they disappointingly crashed out of the FA Cup to Crystal Palace.

Unfortunately for Silva, some very tough tests await his side over this final stretch of the campaign, including Premier League title frontrunners Liverpool, this season’s surprise package Bournemouth and a crunch west London derby against Chelsea.

Qualifying for Europe will also go a long way to attracting the best players possible to Fulham this summer.

Andreas Pereira has been linked with a return to Brazil as well, so the Whites may also need to sign a quality new wide player to replace the former Man United winger.

Fulham make contact over signing Deportivo sensation Yeremay Hernandez

According to TEAMtalk this week, Deportibvo La Coruna sensation Yeremay Hernandez is on their radar. Hernandez’s excellent form for the La Liga 2 side this season has attracted interest from the likes of Chelsea, according to reports in Spain, but it is now believed that Fulham are ready to go toe-to-toe with their cross-town rivals.

The 22-year-old can play on either flank, bagging 11 goals and four assists from out wide, and he is seen by many as a young player with serious potential.

TT report that Fulham have made contact over signing Hernandez already, with the former Real Madrid academy gem also scouted by Arsenal and targeted by Brentford.

However, it is Fulham who’ve made a head start by instigating an approach, and it is believed they’re extremely keen on the £30 million Spaniard. Hernandez, it is claimed, would be seen as a “perfect” option for Silva, who wishes to reinforce his wide options a a top priority.

Wharton replacement: Crystal Palace now plotting bid to sign £20m+ player

Crystal Palace are now plotting a move to sign a £20 million-plus player who could be seen as a replacement for Adam Wharton, according to a recent report.

Adam Wharton could leave Crystal Palace

Wharton has been at Selhurst Park for just over a year now, after joining from Blackburn Rovers in February last year. The midfielder played just over 50 games for the Lancashire side, so it was expected that he would need time to adapt at Palace, but that hasn’t been the case, as he’s looked right at home in the Premier League.

Wharton already has a growing reputation at this level, with his performances earning him an England call-up for Euro 2024. Despite injury problems this season, he has continued to impress, and that has led to strong speculation ahead of the summer transfer window.

It’s been claimed that Manchester United are seriously considering a move to sign Wharton, as Ruben Amorim looks to improve his team. Meanwhile, Tottenham have also registered their interest in the midfielder and plan to sell one of their current players to fund a potential £66 million move.

In recent news, though, Manchester City are believed to have had scouts keeping a close eye on the midfielder, and it has even been claimed from Spain that City have already secured the arrival of Wharton ahead of the summer transfer window opening. The Blues are said to have been willing to shell out a ‘considerable amount’ of money on Wharton.

Crystal Palace now plotting bid to sign £20m+ player

So with Wharton potentially on his way out of Selhurst Park, the Eagles may have already found his replacement. According to Football Insider, Crystal Palace, and by extension chairman Steve Parish, are looking to make a move to sign Hayden Hackney from Middlesbrough.

The report states that the South Londoners have had scouts making regular checks on the Championship midfielder throughout this season, and they now believe Hackney is ready to make the move up to the Premier League. Palace scouts have been left impressed by what they have seen of the 22-year-old and are keeping a close eye on his situation.

Meanwhile, Boro are reluctant to let Hackney leave this summer and are planning to keep hold of him, but it could be difficult for them to turn down big-money offers, especially if they remain a Championship team. It has previously been reported this year that Boro would be looking to get £20 million or more for the midfielder who has been key for Michael Carrick.

Hackney is a player who has impressed many in the Championship, with Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder lauding him in the past by calling him “super”. “I’ve watched Hayden Hackney from afar, seeing his career flourish. Mourinho has denied having any contact with the Portuguese Football Federation, despite multiple reports linking him to the national team job. The 62-year-old's first season in Istanbul has been full of controversy, and his future with the Turkish club remains uncertain. While Mourinho denied holding talks to replace Roberto Martínez, he has not ruled out the possibility of staying at Fenerbahce beyond the summer.

Mourinho also revealed that he rejected a team back in January. He guided Fenerbahce to a second-place finish in the 2024–25 Turkish Super Lig, but a crucial loss to Galatasaray has sparked questions about his long-term commitment. A derby defeat to Besiktas only added to the pressure, especially with just one year left on his contract.

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaching, some Portugal fans are dreaming of seeing Mourinho and Cristiano Ronaldo team up again to lead Portugal to glory. However, reports in the UK suggest that Leeds United and Rangers are keeping an eye on the 'Special One', while Saudi giants Al Hilal, longtime admirers of Mourinho, are also said to be monitoring the situation closely.

Last summer, Mourinho reportedly held talks with Al Qadsiah, shortly after the club was promoted to the Saudi Pro League. According to reports, he attended the Sync Summit in Al Khobar, where he met with Aramco CEO Amin Nasser, Qadsiah board member Faisal Alnughaimish, and project head Nabil Aljama. Despite the high-level meetings, no agreement was reached.

WHAT JOSE MOURINHO SAID

Mourinho said: "Yes, I can deny that I had any meeting with the Portuguese Football Federation. I am a loyal person.

"The only time I had direct contact with a club I informed Fenerbahce. It wasn't now, it was in January. I had a meeting with the [unnamed] club. I didn't accept the offer. But I informed my club even before the meeting.

Regarding his future, Mourinho made it clear that any decision would be handled internally.

He added: "I am not speaking about next season. I will speak internally, not to the media. If there is something, out of respect to the president and the board, I will not bring it into the public."

Value’s dropped £16m: Newcastle hit gold with star who’d "excite everybody"

Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe admitted that some of the club’s decisions in the January transfer window were made with PSR rules in mind.

The Magpies have to be within the profit and sustainability rules and that did not give them much wiggle room for transfers, and the manager revealed that Miguel Almiron’s move to Atlanta United on a permanent deal – with no replacement coming in – was sanctioned due to PSR reasons.

Atlanta reportedly splashed out a fee of £11m to sign the Paraguay international last month, which has left Howe a man short in the forward department.

Newcastle will now be hoping that they do not live to regret cashing in on Almiron and that his value does not rise, in the same way that they will not regret selling Allan Saint-Maximin in 2023.

How much Newcastle sold Allan Saint-Maximin for

Back in the summer of 2023, Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli swooped in to sign the French winger for a reported fee of £30m, as Howe decided to move on from the talented forward.

Market Movers

Saint-Maximin initially signed for the Magpies from Nice, when Steve Bruce was in charge, ahead of the 2019/20 campaign and enjoyed four seasons at St. James’ Park.

Bruce described the 27-year-old wizard as a player “who’d excite everybody” and Saint-Maximin went on to rack up 13 goals and 21 assists in 124 appearances in all competitions.

Newcastle United forwardAllan Saint-Maximin.

Despite his skillful nature on the pitch, the French forward did not contribute with goals and assists at an exceptional rate, and the £30m fee that the club raked in for him was worth taking.

Allan Saint-Maximin's plummeting value

The experienced forward’s declining value since his exit from St. James’ Park also shows that Newcastle hit the jackpot when they landed £30m for his services.

Newcastle winger Allan Saint-Maximin.

Saint-Maximin only scored four goals in 30 matches during the Saudi Pro League season last term, although he did provide ten assists for his teammates.

He was then sent out on loan to Fenerbahce in Turkey for the 2024/25 campaign and the ex-Magpies star has managed three goals and four assists in 22 matches across the Super Lig and the Europa League.

As you can see in the table above, Saint-Maximin’s value has plummeted since his move away from St. James’ Park and currently sits at just £14m, less than half of the fee that Al-Ahli paid for him.

Therefore, Newcastle hit gold when they cashed in on the French attacker because his value has decreased by £16m in less than two years since his move to Saudi Arabia.

The Magpies are more than familiar with his ability…

ByTom Cunningham Feb 20, 2025

The Magpies will now be hoping that Almiron’s market value follows a similar trend, as it would mean that the decision to cash in on him for £11m was a wise one, rather than one that they will live to regret.
