Leeds United: Bielsa must not let Kemar Roofe follow in the footsteps of Chris Wood

When Leeds United bought Kemar Roofe from Oxford United in 2016, not many of their supporters would have predicted just how big of an impact he would have on the club’s fortunes.

Having played primarily as a winger in his first two seasons at Elland Road, the arrival of Marcelo Bielsa as manager last summer saw the 26-year-old move into a more central role after first-choice striker Patrick Bamford suffered a serious injury just weeks into the new campaign.

Whereas many players would have taken a considerable amount of time to adjust to this new position, Roofe made an immediate impact as he fired in five goals in his first six games of the year whilst also providing two assists for his team-mates.

Since this incredible start, the forward has gone from strength to strength in the Championship as he has found the back of the net on a further nine occasions.

However, after being ruled out for two months due to a serious knee injury, Roofe has been limited to substitute appearances in recent weeks.

With Leeds having to settle for the lottery of the play-offs following Sheffield United’s victory last Saturday, it is clear that if they cannot secure promotion to the Premier League, they may be at risk of losing their top-scorer in the summer.

According to Football Insider, Burnley are eyeing up a potential swoop for Roofe as Sean Dyche looks to bolster his attacking options ahead of next season.

If the Clarets do indeed tempt Leeds with an offer for the £4.5m-rated ace (via Transfermarkt), Bielsa must not fall into the same trap that saw Thomas Christensen let Chris Wood move to Turf Moor in 2017. After selling the New Zealand international to Burnley, Leeds suffered a hugely disappointing campaign which saw them finish 13th in the Championship.

Therefore, by doing everything they can to convince Roofe not to follow in the footsteps of Wood, the Whites will be illustrating that have learned from their previous mistakes and are willing to avoid temptation in order to build a successful future at Elland Road.

What do you think Leeds fans? How important is it that Bielsa keeps Roofe at Elland Road next season? Does the forward’s future rely on the outcome of the current season? Let us know below.

The Chalkboard: James Shan makes key error in not starting Chris Brunt at Ashton Gate

[ad_pod ]

At 3-0 down after just 19 minutes against Bristol City, West Brom supporters’ attention turned to their disillusioned board.

It’s now been a month since Darren Moore was sacked as manager and the club are still searching for someone to take over permanently. It’s a situation that’s become a mess and the Baggies fans displayed their frustration vocally at Ashton Gate.

James Shan had started off brightly. He’d won his first three matches in charge but now following consecutive defeats against Millwall and Bristol City, the club are staring down the barrel of potentially dropping out of the play-off places.

If the board had been concerned with their future under Moore then their worries will now have heightened even more.

Plenty of things went wrong last Tuesday night but could they have been prevented if one key man had started?

Lack of leadership

There wasn’t much Shan could have done about the defending for the Bristol City goals. Jake Livermore played a horrendous pass for the opening strike after just a minute, whilst Conor Townsend was caught out at the back post by a stooping header from Jack Hunt for the third.

However, in all the chaos that ensued in the opening quarter of the game, Chris Brunt, the club’s captain watched on from the substitutes’ bench.

The Northern Irishman has been particularly vocal and is known, for better or for worse, to be a strong influence in the dressing room.

But even if some West Brom fans may not like that about him, Shan’s decision not to include him in midweek could prove costly, not only for any potential ambitions he had of becoming the permanent manager but in terms of their promotion hopes too.

The club needed a leader and for someone to grab the game by the scruff of the neck. Brunt isn’t someone who can change the game as such with the ball at his feet, but mentally he could have been able to prevent some of the madness that happened in the opening 19 minutes.

Brunt’s form has been impressive too, claiming two assists and a goal since Shan took charge. For him to be left out, therefore, was a huge error.

Pundit View: Sutton slams Young as United’s "worst ever" captain

[ad_pod ]

Manchester United would have been on their worst run of form in 27 years had they lost to West Ham, and Chris Sutton has some very harsh words for one of the men who has been woeful during this difficult run.

The Red Devils had lost four of their last five games in all competitions before the clash with West Ham, and Wednesday’s game against Barcelona saw one of the worst individual performances of the season from Ashley Young.

The versatile ace has been deployed on both flanks in midfield and in defence since moving to Old Trafford, and he had a nightmare at right-wing-back against the Catalan giants.

Completing just 73 per cent of his passes, he lost possession more than any other player on the pitch and completed zero out of 11 crosses, per Whoscored.

What’s the word?

Sutton, who was known for his physicality as a target man in his playing days and now works mostly as a pundit for BT Sport, crucified the 33 year-old on Saturday morning.

Speaking on BT Sport, he said: “Let’s get it right, he’s the worst ever United captain and the worst ever United right back.”

Fans were quick to agree with the Celtic legend, with one saying Young has never been good enough and another demanding a summer sale.

Verdict

To be brutally honest, it’s hard to disagree with the sentiment of Sutton’s message. While Young may not literally be the worst player to ever pull on the red shirt and play right back, he is nowhere near the required standard.

The ex-winger has very poor defensive positioning and awareness and his wastefulness on the ball would make him a liability in a League Two side at the moment, never mind the biggest club in England.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has faced criticism in recent weeks for the first time since taking the job at Old Trafford, and the boss now must have the guts to axe one of his senior players. Quite simply, Young is just not good enough anymore and he is running out of time to prove otherwise.

Made everything easy for us: Liverpool fans lavish praise on Roberto Firmino

[ad_pod ]

Roberto Firmino came off the bench to score his 16th goal of the season in Liverpool’s 4-1 win over Porto on Wednesday night.

The victory saw Liverpool book their spot in the semi-finals of the Champions League courtesy of a 6-1 aggregate success over the Portuguese club, who struggled over the two legs.

Firmino was somewhat surprisingly left out of the starting XI, but was introduced at the interval and managed to get his name on the scoresheet.

The 31-cap Brazil international has now scored four times in 10 Champions League matches during the 2018-19 campaign.

And the Liverpool fans will be hoping that the attacker can put on a strong performance against Spanish champions Barcelona in the semi-finals of the competition.

Spurs fans call for Son & Lucas partnership v Man City

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur fans are desperate for Lucas Moura and Son Heung-Min to play together against Manchester City in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final in midweek.

The two sides clash at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday evening, with Spurs holding a 1-0 advantage from the first leg at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Son, of course, scored the only goal of that game, drilling a powerful low effort under goalkeeper Ederson.

He has scored 18 goals in all competitions this season, while Lucas netted a hat-trick on Saturday as Spurs thumped Huddersfield Town 4-0.

Indeed, the final goal of his treble came from an excellent Son through ball, hinting at a burgeoning partnership between the pair.

And, with Harry Kane out injured, a number of Spurs fans want the Brazilian and the South Korean to play together as the club attempt to reach their first Champions League semi-final in a generation.

Predicted XI: Neil Lennon brings in Oliver Burke for Old Firm Derby

[ad_pod ]

Celtic face Rangers at Ibrox on Sunday in the final Old Firm derby clash of the 2018/19 season.

The Bhoys wrapped up the Scottish Premiership title with their win against Aberdeen last weekend, meaning that the trip across Glasgow is pressure-free.

However, the players will surely want to make amends for their hugely disappointing display in the 1-0 defeat in the corresponding fixture in December, where only some fine saves from goalkeeper Craig Gordon kept the scoreline down.

Given they are unbeaten under Neil Lennon and are in great form, it may have been expected that the Northern Irishman would select an unchanged XI this weekend.

However, he will have to make at least one alteration after it was confirmed on Friday that loanee Timothy Weah has left the club.

The back five of Scott Bain, Kristoffer Ajer, Jozo Simunovic, Kieran Tierney and Mikael Lustig – the Scottish Sun have reported that the latter duo are ok following injury issues – picks itself at the moment.

In midfield, the visitors should benefit from having Callum McGregor – who started at left-back against the Gers in December – alongside Scott Brown in the middle.

Tom Rogic, James Forrest and Odsonne Edouard are also un-droppable right now, which leaves Weah’s vacant spot on the left.

The two players in contention are surely Scott Sinclair and Oliver Burke, and Lennon should give the latter a final chance to prove he has a future at Parkhead beyond the end of the season when his loan expires.

Controversial. Uncompromising. Leader. C’mon the Hoops’ Keith talks the future of Celtic’s evergreen captain Scott Brown in the video below…

The 6 ft 2 man has found regular first-team minutes hard to come by since the 47-year-old replaced Brendan Rodgers, but he could thrive if the visitors plan to play on the counter on Sunday.

Napoli and Man Utd eyeing Tottenham flop Trippier in bizarre deal

[ad_pod ]

Napoli and Manchester United are interested in signing Kieran Trippier from Tottenham Hotspur this summer, per Gianluca Di Marzio.

The Spurs right-back has endured a mixed season this term but helped his side qualify for the Champions League semi-finals earlier this week.

What’s the word?

The aforementioned report claims that the Italian side, who were eliminated from the Europa League quarter-finals by Arsenal earlier this week, are already drawing up plans for next summer.

And Trippier is name-checked as a potential signing, with the club keen to recruit more depth on the flanks.

An enquiry, Di Marzio claims, has already been made.

But Napoli may face competition, bizarrely, from United, who are also said to be interested in the 28-year-old.

Antonio Valencia, of course, will leave the club this summer and United need to recruit a replacement in his stead.

Bizarre story

Trippier’s form has fallen off a cliff since the 2018 World Cup, when he played a pivotal role in helping England to the semi-finals, scoring a brilliant free-kick in the last-four clash with Croatia.

He was also on the pitch as Spurs qualified for the last four at Manchester City’s expense in the Champions League but his form this season has been mixed.

He has struggled defensively and has made a number of mistakes, including scoring a decisive own goal in the Premier League clash with Chelsea.

It makes little sense that either side would be interested in him; the likes of Aaron Wan-Bissaka at Crystal Palace and Leicester City’s Ricardo Pereira have been in better form and deals for them would not involve negotiating with Daniel Levy.

As it is, Spurs should snap the hand off of any bidder for Trippier – he is inherently upgradeable and Mauricio Pochettino needs fresh blood – but Napoli and United’s apparent interest remains bemusing at best.

Pundit View: David Prutton backs Sheffield United to seal Championship title

[ad_pod ]

Writing his Sky Sports column, David Prutton thinks Sheffield United’s campaign will get even better with his final day predictions.

Just a few weeks ago the Blades didn’t look to be on track for automatic promotion, but now the former Leeds midfielder expects the Yorkshire club to lift silverware at the end of the season.

What’s been said then?

Prutton has backed Sheffield United to win the league title on the final day, as they travel to the Bet365 stadium while Norwich have a tough matchup against Aston Villa.

The 37-year-old wrote that he expects there to be one final twist at the top end of the Championship.

“It looked like it was going to go to the wire for automatic promotion in the Sky Bet Championship, but Leeds’ collapse allowed Sheffield United to seal it before the final day, which I must admit I didn’t see coming! Boy have the Blades been celebrating since.

“Chris Wilder is a driven individual, though, and he will want his team to win at Stoke and give themselves a chance of silverware. They are three points behind Norwich, with a better goal difference, so the title can still be won.

“I fancy Sheffield United to turn up at Stoke and nick all three points, and Norwich have a difficult trip to Aston Villa. You don’t know how many changes Dean Smith will make in that one with the play-offs coming up, but I have a feeling they could sneak the win and give the Blades the opportunity to claim the title.”

One more celebration

One thing is for certain, this weekend Sheffield United will be in a party mood, and that could mean free-flowing attacking football.

As long United’s players aren’t still bearing heavy heads after last weekend’s festivities they should brush aside Stoke, whilst Norwich could struggle against an Aston Villa side who will want to go into the playoffs on a high.

The Canaries have seemingly taken their foot off the gas in recent weeks, as their spot in the Premier League was all but sealed last month. The East Anglian outfit have won just one of their previous five games, and they could easily relinquish their grip on the league title.

Celebrations shared on the club’s Twitter after promotion was confirmed showed the affinity between the players and the fans at Bramall Lane. The squad will undoubtedly want to deliver the dream league title so that they can do it all over again.
