Jack Ross tells Benjamin Kimpioka what he needs to do to be a first-team regular

[ad_pod ]

Sunderland manager Jack Ross has already proven that he isn’t willing to give his young players a chance this season if they are good enough, and he has told highly-rated attacker Benjamin Kimpioka what he needs to do to become a regular in the starting XI.

What’s the word, then?

Well, some of the Black Cats’ younger players like Denver Hume, Bali Mumba and, of course, Josh Maja have already made big impressions for the Wearside outfit this term, and 18-year-old Kimpioka looks to be in his thinking as well.

The teenager made his league debut for the club as a late substitute in the 2-2 draw against Peterborough United on Tuesday night, although he probably only took his spot in the 18-man squad because Ross had a number of injury issues to deal with that had stretched his squad to the extreme.

The League One outing – albeit brief – followed a 45-minute outing in the EFL Trophy win against Stoke City, while he has also appeared on five occasions for the U23 side in Premier League 2.

What has Ross had to say?

Speaking to SAFC.com, the 42-year-old said: “Benji is an enigma at times.

“He has really good attributes to his game, so it’s about trying to piece it all together.”

“Even in those few minutes on the park he showed he’s got attributes that, if he keeps working hard when he’s with the under-23s, he’s got every chance of getting more opportunities as the season unfolds.”

Will he get his chance?

As you can tell from Ross’ comments, the Scottish boss isn’t quite convinced that Kimpioka’s all-round game is good enough for him to be a starter for Sunderland right now, but it is clear that he has the talent and potential to play a crucial cameo role in some fixtures.

If he develops and learns quickly, there is no reason why he shouldn’t get an opportunity this season like Maja and Hume before him.

Lyon slap £70m asking price on Tottenham target Ndombele

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur’s chances of signing Tanguy Ndombele look slim as Lyon are demanding £70m for the midfielder, according to The Daily Star.

What’s the word?

Mauricio Pochettino’s side remain in the fight at the top of the Premier League but their form has been sub-part to the levels that the Lilywhites aspire to reach, while their Champions League ambitions are already at risk of going up in smoke.

The decision not to sign any new players during the summer appears to have backfired as Spurs’ squad is plagued by an injury crisis and Pochettino has already started to eye new additions in the January window, including Lyon’s Tanguy Ndombele.

However, Spurs look likely to miss out on the services of the highly-rated midfielder as The Daily Star reports the Ligue 1 side have slapped a mammoth £7om asking price upon the head of the 21-year-old.

Is there any chance?

Tottenham have two major problems in their hunt to sign Ndombele and the first is the mammoth asking price, which Spurs are almost certain to be unable to afford in a period where they are poised to move stadiums.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”304066″ player=”12034″ title=”Could Jadon Sancho Be England’s Neymar”]

Splashing such a high amount on a player is also not a transfer style that Spurs are accustomed too and, should they decide to change their approach and go all-out for Ndombele, they will encounter their second major issue.

That is the interest of Manchester City in the midfielder who helped Lyon inflict a surprise defeat on Pep Guardiola’s side in the Champions League this season, as Spurs surely do not have the capability to go toe-to-toe in the market with the Citizens.

The Sanllehi effect: Aaron Ramsey’s contract withdrawal is evidence of a new-found ruthlessness at Arsenal

On September 18th, Arsenal confirmed long-serving CEO Ivan Gazidis’ departure in order to take up a role at AC Milan. Vinai Venkatesham, formerly the chief commercial officer at the club, and Raul Sanllehi were officially announced as Gazidis’ successors.

Given his background, it can be safely assumed that Venkatesham will have little to no input into footballing matters at the club. Sanllehi, meanwhile, is almost certain to have a say over future goings on on the pitch.

On September 27th, the BBC reported that the Gunners had withdrawn their contract offer to Aaron Ramsey, despite an agreement over terms having apparently been in place. Ramsey is now almost certain to leave the Emirates Stadium as a free agent when his current contract with the club expires at the end of the season.

These two high profile events occurring at the club within ten days of each other could be coincidental, but that is unlikely. Rather, the effects of Sanllehi’s instalment at the top of the club’s UK-based hierarchy already appear to be being felt.

Sanllehi is a new figure in North London. Arsenal announced his arrival, to take up the role of ‘head of football relations’ (a roundabout way of calling him a director of football, probably imposed in light of Arsene Wenger’s previously publicly expressed distaste for the position), on November 28th 2017.

Given that the last 12 months has been a period of intense change at Arsenal, the Spaniard’s appointment may have flown somewhat under the radar. In fact, at the time of writing, a search of his name on the Gunners’ own website returns just eight entries, of which just two are really about him – a poor return for perhaps now the most powerful man at the club on a day to day basis.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”305269″ player=”12034″ title=”Are Emery’s Arsenal Silently Gunning For The Title”]

As it is, little is known about Sanllehi amongst many Arsenal fans. Prior to his arrival in England, the 49-year-old was director of football at Barcelona for a decade, and spent around 15 years with the Blaugrana in total.

In Spain, Sanllehi played a key role in bringing Neymar to the Camp Nou. His presence was also heavily felt in the transfers of Luis Suarez, Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Ivan Rakitic. In his 10 years as director of football, in which time he worked under three club presidents – Joan Laporta, Sandro Rosell, Josep Maria Bartomeu – Sanllehi saw Barcelona achieve unprecedented success in both domestic and European competitions.

Central to Barca’s golden period in this time was their headstrong attitude towards maintaining and prioritising the club’s best interests when it came to negotiating transfer and contract policy. These ideals have been sorely lacking at Arsenal for a number of years.

The long-running contract sagas concerning the futures of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez (amongst others), the loss of key figures like Robin van Persie and Samir Nasri to direct domestic rivals, and an inability to demand the highest price in return for their most attractive assets have all damaged the Premier League club as both a brand and a footballing entity.

For a long time change was needed and change has now come. Arsene Wenger was replaced this summer by Unai Emery – a decision Sanllehi is known to have had a say in as part of a three-man panel alongside Gazidis and Sven Mislintat.

Earlier in 2017, Arsenal appointed a renowned contract negotiator, Huss Fahmy. In September, American businessman Stan Kroenke became the first 100% owner in the club’s history. Gazidis’ exit completed the overhaul and hailed the full realisation of a new era at Arsenal; a very new, very modern, very different Arsenal.

One of the few surviving recognisable features was the presence of a high-profile and extended contract saga. An overhang from the old regime, the Gunners were once again facing the prospect of losing one their star players as a free agent or else giving in to his contract demands. In these circumstances, all of the negotiating power is in the player’s court.

Exact details of Ramsey’s contract demands have not been made public. However, given his powerful bargaining position, his quality, age profile and status at the club as longest-serving player and two-time FA Cup final hero, the terms being requested will certainly have been significant.

In January, Ozil was handed a new long-term contract by the club – who found themselves in desperate circumstances – worth around £350,000 a week, as reported by the BBC. The knock-on effect of this agreement will be a raising of the bar in terms of expected wages by first team players at Arsenal, especially big stars such as Ramsey.

However, whilst Ramsey is undoubtedly a quality footballer, his importance to Arsenal is debatable. Capable as he is of magic moments and strong performances in big matches, there are elements of the Welshman’s game that frustrate and leave much to be desired.

What’s more, there does not appear to be a natural place for the 27-year-old in Emery’s starting XI alongside Ozil. When playing together, both Ramsey and the German strive to take up the same positions and dictate the game themselves – this is not conducive to a cohesive, effective attack.

Both Ramsey and Ozil expect to be starters at Arsenal. Ozil is certainly paid to be. In a one-or-the-other situation, which may well have now actually arisen, the club would be foolish to back the man with no long-term contract ahead of their highest-ever paid player who has agreed to stay until 2021. In light of this, for the good of the club –  both financially and in terms of squad harmony – Ramsey is unfortunately expendable.

Despite this, following extended negotiations under the watch of Gazidis, the club had agreed certainly lucrative new terms with the ex-Cardiff City midfielder. Until that is, in the aftermath of Sanllehi succeeding the former CEO, the offer was rescinded.

Finally, Arsenal appear to be making the hard decisions. Caving to Ramsey’s demands would have been easy and would have undoubtedly satisfied a large portion of the fanbase. It would not, however, have moved the club forward, and would potentially have lumbered Emery with two big name, highly-paid playmakers both vying for the same spot in the team.

Saying no to Ramsey, and electing to instead move forward in a new direction without him was a ruthless, calculated call made with the good of the club taking precedence over the wishes of the individual player. It’s been a long time coming, but Arsenal look to have at last developed the thick skinned, self-preserving mentality that is the driving force behind all successful, elite clubs.

They almost certainly have Sanllehi to thank for that.

Napoli rival West Ham for Atletico Madrid outcast Santiago Arias

[ad_pod ]

Napoli have joined West Ham in the hunt for Atletico Madrid outcast Santiago Arias, according to Corriere Dello Sport via TalkSport.

What’s the word?

West Ham are yet to find their rhythm this season despite splashing over £100m in the summer transfer window as Manuel Pellegrini’s side have lost five of their opening eight Premier League fixtures in the first few months of the campaign.

A leaky defence is likely to be improved with further additions in January but West Ham may have to change their plans as Corriere Dello Sport via TalkSport states Napoli are eyeing a move for Atletico Madrid’s Santiago Arias.

The 26-year-old only joined the Spanish giants in the summer but is said to be considering his option after a lack of opportunities with Diego Simeone’s side, which has led to Napoli reviving an interest in a defender they wanted during the summer.

A necessary addition?

Any headline that suggests West Ham are set to miss out on a transfer target will automatically provide a blow to supporters but the reality is Santiago Arias is an addition that the Hammers do not need, as their problems lie in other areas.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”307232″ player=”12034″ title=”Rafa’s Pub Facts Germany Hit New Low & Jadon Sancho Makes Us Feel Old”]

West Ham already have Ryan Fredericks and Pablo Zabaleta competing for a spot down the right side of defence and do not need Arias to throw his name into the ring for a spot in that position, with the Hammers instead needing a decent option at left-back.

Securing Arias’ services would also prove to be difficult as Atletico only purchased the player from PSV Eindhoven in the summer and are showing no signs of a willingness to negotiate a departure, so West Ham currently have very little chance of securing a deal.

Opinion: Sheffield Wednesday should convince Liverpool to cut Woodburn’s time at Sheffield United short

The Daily Mail recently reported that Ben Woodburn had not been recalled from his loan spell at Sheffield United, despite turning out for Liverpool’s U23 side against Derby on Sunday. However, United’s bitter rivals Sheffield Wednesday should attempt to convince the Reds that he will get more game time at Hillsborough.

What’s the situation?

The 19-year-old was subbed off after around 65 minutes in the 3-2 Premier League 2 loss for Liverpool’s youngsters, but he remains on his season-long loan deal with the Blades.

Liverpool though have become known for insisting that their young loan players get significant game time to aid their development, and the club have even inserted clauses into the temporary deals so that a certain amount of appearances must be made.

The Reds then could recall Woodburn in January and send him elsewhere if Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder does not re-integrate him into the squad at Bramall Lane. The young Welsh international has only started one league game for the Blades so far this season and has just 234 minutes under his belt, so Wednesday and manager Jos Luhukay could certainly offer a better deal.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”310054″ player=”12034″ title=”Rafa’s Pub Facts Fake Madrid & Ross Barkley Emulates… David Ngog”]

Creative spark

Wednesday are currently 11th in the Championship table after their 2-1 loss to Middlesbrough last Friday evening, and Woodburn would be a perfect fit for Luhukay’s side. The Liverpool man could dovetail well with the in-form Adam Reach to add the creative spark that the Owls sometimes lack.

Woodburn is also versatile and can play in attacking midfield or off the left-hand side of an attacking three, so he would surely get more minutes at Hillsborough than he currently is with United even if this was off the bench.

Convincing Liverpool to recall Woodburn from the Blades and send him to Wednesday would be a bold attempt from the Owls, but it would certainly benefit Luhukay for the remainder of the season and could be a crucial move for Wednesday in their push for promotion.

So, Wednesday fans, would you like to see a loan move for Woodburn in January if he is recalled by Liverpool? Have your say by voting in our poll below.

Southampton fans desperate for Harrison Reed return

[ad_pod ]

Southampton midfielder Harrison Reed is currently on loan at Blackburn Rovers, with the 5ft 9in ace moving to Ewood Park at the end of August.

Reed has been in impressive form for Blackburn this season, and scored his second goal for the Championship club against West Bromwich Albion at the weekend.

It was some strike from the 23-year-old, who has made 30 first-team appearances for Southampton, but is not currently in the plans of head coach Mark Hughes.

Southampton have actually not scored in their last five Premier League matches during a difficult run of form, and it would be fair to say that a number of the club’s supporters are frustrated.

[ad_pod ]

A number of the fans have recently called for Jake Hesketh to return from his loan spell at Burton Albion, and now their attention has switched to Reed.

A talented midfielder, Reed came through the youth system at Southampton, and actually made his first-team debut for the club back in 2013.

The Premier League outfit’s fans are hopeful that they will still see the best of Reed, and a selection of the Twitter reaction to the Englishman’s goal can be seen below:

Haller could make Wolves a much more dangerous side

Wolves almost completed the unlikeliest of comebacks against Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend.

The Championship winners were three goals down after Erik Lamela, Lucas Moura and Harry Kane gave Mauricio Pochettino’s men a comfortable advantage. However, some dodgy defending from Juan Foyth allowed Wolves to score two penalties – converted by Ruben Neves and Raul Jimenez. Their efforts were in vain as Spurs held on to secure all three points at Molineux.

Nuno Espirito Santo will be pleased despite the defeat with Wolves showing excellent heart to try and get back into the game. Once again, the Midlands club lacked a true goal scorer to turn the tide in their favour. Reports suggest the Portuguese will aim to bring a new striker to the club when the window reopens in January.

One man who should be on his shortlist is Frankfurt striker – Sebastian Haller. Valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt, the 24-year-old has developed into a crucial player for the Bundesliga side since joining from Utrecht last summer. Haller hit nine goals in his debut season in Germany but has reached new heights during the new campaign.

The Frenchman has made a blistering start to the season, netting seven goals in just eight Bundesliga starts – highlighting the threat he poses in the attack. As well as finding the back of the net, Haller has also scooped five assists for his team-mates, showing he is capable of leading the line and bringing others into the game. Haller’s expert finishing and hold up play makes him the ideal January signing for Wolves.

A strong and powerful forward – Haller would have no issues adapting to the physicality of the Premier League. His arrival would finally give Nuno the quality striker he has been searching for.

Wolves fans, thoughts?

Aston Villa Injury News: Keinan Davis closing on return

[ad_pod ]

Aston Villa have been boosted by the news that Keinan Davis has stepped up his recovery from a groin operation.

Davis is yet to turn out for Villa this season after struggling with a groin injury, which was ultimately operated on in the middle of last month.

What’s the latest?

Well, Villa boss Dean Smith spoke about the situation in his pre-match press conference ahead of this weekend’s trip to Derby County in the Championship.

BirminghamLive quotes Smith as saying:

“Keinan is starting his rehab now so he should be back on the training ground within the next two or three weeks.”

It is unlikely that Davis will be available for selection until the latter stages of 2018, and it might well be the New Year before the attacker is seen in a Villa shirt again.

The update is extremely positive, however, and the 20-year-old will be like a new signing for Villa in the second half of the 2018-19 campaign.

What does Davis bring to Villa?

The 6ft 3in forward joined Villa in 2015, and made seven first-team appearances for the club during the 2016-17 campaign.

Last term, Davis scored three times in 30 appearances in all competitions, and certainly showed that he can be a threat to Championship defences.

Neither Tammy Abraham nor Jonathan Kodjia have been prolific for Villa this term, and it is too much to expect Davis to come in and score 10 times in the second half of the season.

The England Under-20 international will give Smith options in the final third, however, and Villa will certainly be hoping that they are in a better position in the Championship table by the time that 2019 rolls around.

HYS: Should Bielsa change Leeds’ formation to get two up front?

[ad_pod ]

Leeds dominated possession in their loss at West Brom but failed to find that cutting edge, so should Marcelo Bielsa mix things up and try two up front?

Bielsa’s free-flowing football has taken the Championship by storm, but the Whites now sit third after the disappointing result at the Hawthorns.

Despite getting completely swept aside by an incredible second half performance from the Baggies, Bielsa’s side had 72 per cent of the possession.

Thogden witnessed Wayne Rooney’s final England cap. Check out his vlog here…

Fans are hoping to sign a goalscoring winger in January as the likes of Alioski and Saiz continue to struggle to find the net, but could a formation change be the easier solution?

Tyler Roberts was fantastic when he was forced to fill in for the injured Kemar Roofe, as the 19-year-old scored three times and added one assist while Roofe was out.

Roofe meanwhile is in the form of his life, and putting the pair together would mean Bielsa has two genuine goalscorers on the pitch instead of relying on playmakers to find their shooting boots.

So, Leeds fans, do you think two up front could work? Should Roberts replace Alioski in the XI? Let us know your thoughts by voting in the poll below…

Swansea fans on Twitter react as Connor Roberts signs a new long-term contract

[ad_pod ]

Swansea fans on Twitter were delighted with right-back Connor Roberts as he put pen to paper on a new long-term contract that will keep him at the club until the summer of 2022.

The 23-year-old has appeared in all 17 Championship games so far this season for Graham Potter’s side, scoring two goals and providing one assist as he switches between right-back and right-midfield.

The Playmaker FC squad decided to wind-up some unsuspecting Brazil fans at the Emirates on Saturday night. Watch the hilarious results in the video below…

After coming through the Swans’ youth academy, Roberts made his debut for the club in January this year, making four appearances in the Premier League as the club were relegated from the Premier League.

Since then though the local lad has gone on to become a fixture in the side and has also picked up six caps and a goal for the Welsh national side under Ryan Giggs.

Clearly, Swansea fans were delighted with the news of his contract renewal, which follows new deals for Joe Rodon, Jay Fulton and Matt Grimes in recent weeks. Check out the best of the reaction below.
