Katich becomes Hampshire's second overseas player

Simon Katich, the 27 year-old Australian left-handed batsman and left-arm wrist spinner, will be Hampshire’s second overseas player next season after signing a one-year contract. Shane Warne will captain the county providing he recovers from his shoulder dislocation sustained in the one-day international against England on Sunday, but Katich should prove to be a very useful addition to his resources. It was during the 1998/99 Australian season that Katich really emerged with statistics to confirm his rich promise when he scored 1,039 runs in the Sheffield Shield, including 115 in the final, to help Western Australia take the title. This earned him selection to tour Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe with the national side, but he went down with chicken pox while away and took some time to rid himself of the virus. He made an immediate impact when he played for Durham in the summer of 2000, scoring a thousand runs at an average in excess of 40 and, following another very successful season in Australia, was selected for the Ashes tour in England in 2001. He made his Test debut at Headingley when captain Steve Waugh was injured, and the following winter made his one-day international debut for Australia.A product of the Australian academy, he moved from his native Western Australia to New South Wales for the current Australian season and took three wickets to rip out England’s middle order in the one-day match at Sydney prior to the start of the VB Series. He played in one first-class match for Yorkshire last season and three limited-overs games when Darren Lehmann was called away on national duty.Hampshire’s director of cricket, Tim Tremlett, said: “We’re delighted to have signed a player of Simon’s calibre. He is familiar with English conditions and is very highly regarded.”Obviously the county is hoping he doesn’t do a John Crawley and get into the national side after signing for us,” he added. His first-class career to date sees his batting average standing at an impressive 48.31, with 16 hundreds, while in one-day cricket he averages 36.81.

Read's excellence in vain for England Academy

A stand of 46 for the last wicket between Bilal Shafayat and Nick Thornicroft edged England Under-19s to a thrilling one-wicket win over the ECB Academy at Adelaide.Shafayat made 31 and Thornicroft nine to pluck the Under-19s from the threshold of oblivion. They eventually reached their target of 240 with just four balls to spare. They also ensured that an innings of 73 made earlier by Samit Patel did not go to waste.Earlier, Notts wicket-keeper Chris Read hit an excellent 95 off 123 balls, while Durham’s Gordon Muchall chimed in with 46.The Under-19 team included Andy Flintoff and Ashley Giles, who were continuing their warm-ups for the World Cup. Neither man shone, with Giles returning one for 35 from 10 overs and making a duck, while Flintoff bowled just three overs and made 14.

England to request Zimbabwe match move

The England and Wales Cricket Board is to ask the World Cup technical committee to reschedule England’s World Cup match against Zimbabwe.A statement confirming the move was released by the ECB this afternoon. The six-man technical committee has taken responsibility for the matches from the world governing body, and will make a decision on the ECB’s request later this week. The ECB stament added: “The England captain, head coach and the Professional Cricketers Association are fully aware, and supportive of, the ECB’s intentions to ask for the match to be moved.”The ECB’s director of corporate affairs John Read added: “We’ve always said we’ll closely monitor the situation in Zimbabwe and we feel in the last couple of days there has been a deterioration there.”It leads us to believe there are real security concerns. The important thing to emphasise is the players and the Professional Cricketers’ Association, who we have been working closely with, are fully appreciative of the steps we’ve taken today.”The International Cricket Council has confirmed that it has been informed of the request. The ICC’s chief executive, Malcolm Speed, said that it is the first time that a country has sought such a review.”Prior to this request from the ECB, no country has sought a review of the ICC decision to stage games in Zimbabwe,” said Mr Speed. The ECB request is provisionally scheduled to be heard by the ICC Cricket World Cup Technical Committee in Cape Town on Thursday, 6 February. The ECB has asked for the hearing to proceed as a matter of urgency, and the ICC is establishing the availability of the Committee members.

WA selectors axe three players

SYDNEY, March 3 AAP – Western Australian cricket selectors swung the axe today ahead of this week’s Pura Cup match against Victoria.Wicketkeeper-batsman Ryan Campbell, batsman Michael Hussey and swing bowler Callum Thorp were omitted from the team which lost to NSW at the WACA Ground yesterday.Allrounder Peter Worthington will make his first-class debut if selected in the final XI.The 12th man will be named on the morning of the match, which starts in Melbourne on Thursday.Chairman of selectors Wayne Hill said with WA out of contention for the final, the last match of the regular season presented an opportunity for some of the young Warriors.”We have lost our last two completed matches by close margins,” Hill said.”It is the form of some of our senior players that has become questionable.”We have decided to look at the potential of some of the state’s developing young players.”Western Australian cricket is losing games and we have to look at ways to rectify that.”Paceman Brad Williams, who missed the match against NSW with an elbow injury, was also included in the 12-man squad named today.WA (from): Justin Langer (capt), Jo Angel, Beau Casson, Michael Clark, Murray Goodwin, Matthew Nicholson, Marcus North, Chris Rogers, Luke Ronchi, Adam Voges, Brad Williams, Peter Worthington.

CCA extends best wishes to Gus Logie as he takes over as coach of West Indies team

On the eve of the West Indies vs Australia & Sri Lanka series, Canadian Cricket friends and supporters extend best wishes to Gus Logie, the WICB and their efforts to revitalize WICB cricket.Cream will always rise to the top, or as he stated, “You can’t sink a cork, it will always rise to the top.”Regardless of the problems, united you stand, divided you fall.Insularity and self-promotion will always sink the team. The Aussies are an outstanding array of talented players who support each other ALL the time. They draped themselves in the Flag after the World Cup victory. Selfdisciplined, classy and truly proud national ambassadors. No team or unit that is divided is going to beat or even compete with them.Gus Logie is a class act. With support and self discipline, the WICB will do wonderfully well. With any indiscipline and insularity, even Gus will not be enough. In any case, they can’t sink his ship. Best wishes Gus to you and the team.

Hampshire in command at close of Second day.

The second day of the Frizzell County Championship match belonged to Hampshire, as the amassed maximum batting points, then captured two late wickets to finish in command.Simon Katich and Nic Pothas added 46 to their overnight partnership, before the wicket-keeper cut at Plunkett to be caught at third man. Katich playing a patient roll on the slow wicket moved serenely on, whilst Dimitri Mascarenhas began to play some more aggressive shots. Katich finally fell bowled, attempting to cut at the off spinner Phillips. Wasim Akram then made the same mistake with his third ball.At 332-7 Hampshire appeared to be losing their way, that is until Mascarenhas and Shaun Udal stayed together to bring up the 400 and 5 bonus points. They shared an 8th wicket partnership of 113, before Dimmi played back to Phillips and was lbw eight short of a deserved century.Udal progressed to 60 not out, before tailenders Mullally and Giddins fell. Hampshire’s score of 456 was their highest Innings tally at the Rose Bowl.Jon Lewis the countries leading run scorer and James Lowe, making his first class debut, gave the visitors a good start posting 79 runs, before Ed Giddings enticed the Durham captain to edge to wicket-keeper Pothas. Gordon Muchall then fell lbw to Udal’s quicker ball, to leave Hampshire in the accendancy.

Snedden prepares New Zealand cricket for its next big step

Lindsay Crocker’s appointment as New Zealand team manager was no surprise today – that cat was let out of the bag when he resigned as Auckland’s chief executive – but what was of interest was his appointment as general manager of the team. This has signalled a change in direction for the management structure of the side, something that New Zealand Cricket’s chief executive Martin Snedden described as the “start of a new and exciting era”.”The new structure provides greater role-clarity for the general manager, coach and captain,” said Snedden. “It makes better use of resources and gives the coach more certainty of his position within the unit.”Snedden added that the new structure had the support of all involved in the consultation process including the outgoing coach Denis Aberhart, the incoming coach John Bracewell, the selection chairman Sir Richard Hadlee, and the captain Stephen Fleming. What the structure means is there will be a TelstraClear Black Caps Unit comprising team management, administration and support staff and the team. The coach will have ultimate decision-making authority for cricket issues and is responsible for the cricket performances of the team. There are improved accountabilities and reporting lines for team management, and there should be better integration between the team and the High Performance Centre (HPC).Crocker will be responsible for the overall performance of the Unit, including the coach. Snedden explained: “The coach will have the ultimate decision-making authority on cricket functions and issues within the Black Caps Unit. The captain will be responsible for onfield decisions and will retain a strong off-the-field leadership role.”And Snedden added that the HPC’s involvement will be greater for the side. “The HPC has the potential to be the Black Caps’ most important resource. It has the capacity to provide specialist services vital to the smooth functioning of the Black Caps, and also to undertake research which will ultimately provide the side with a leading edge at international level.”The thinking was that it was important that the management structure allows players to understand the cricketing environment being created for them, feel able to contribute freely to the creation of that environment through thoughts, ideas and needs, feel inspired and invigorated enough to contribute to that environment, and to feel part of the environment.Snedden claimed that New Zealand had gone from being a minnow in the world game to an established force – and the next step was to become a dominant force. “To achieve that, NZC as an organisation, with the assistance of the major associations, and the individuals concerned, both on and off the field, will have to extend themselves beyond what is the case at present,” he said. “The vision is achievable, but requires total commitment to a clearly defined, top-quality pathway.”

Waugh second-best Australian cricketer ever: Marsh

Geoff Marsh, coach of the Zimbabwe team, has rated Steve Waugh as the second-best Australian cricketer, next only to Don Bradman. "I think he has to be rated as one of the best, if not the best … obviously Bradman stands alone, but I reckon his record speaks for itself,” Marsh said of Waugh, who has scored four hundreds in his last eight Test innings to resurrect his international career.Marsh was all-praise for Waugh’s ability to combat pressure, both as a captain and as a batsman. “His captaincy record is outstanding and his performance with the bat speaks for itself. All Stephen’s (32) hundreds in Test cricket, they are all under pressure.”Stephen’s such a competitor, he loves the game of cricket and he’s sodetermined to keep going. He enjoys the captaincy, he enjoys winning and he enjoys the team.”According to Marsh, two of the best centuries he had seen in international cricket came off Waugh’s bat – his unbeaten 120 against South Africa in a crunch match of the 1999 World Cup, and his 102 against England at Sydney earlier this year.”That hundred he got in Sydney last year was just magnificent,” Marsh said. “It was the second best innings I have ever seen in world cricket. The other one was his hundred in the World Cup in 1999 in Headingley, when we had to beat South Africa to get into the semi-finals. Great knocks, inspirational, great for the game.”Waugh recently went past Clive Lloyd’s record of maximum Test wins as captain, and is only 654 runs away from toppling Allan Border as the highest run-scorer in Tests. With Test series against Zimbabwe, India and Sri Lanka lined up over the next 12 months, Waugh is well on his way to breaking another record.
