  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Garnacho has signed a seven-year contract with the Blues after the two Premier League clubs agreed a deal worth a fixed £40 million fee ($54m) with a 10 per cent sell-on clause, Goal understands. The 21-year-old has become Chelsea’s latest new arrival following the earlier signings of Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Jamie Gittens and Jorrel Hato, while Estevao, Dario Essugo, Mamadou Sarr and Kendry Paez all joined following pre-existing agreements.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Garnacho had been linked with Chelsea for some time after being told – alongside Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia – that he was not part of United manager Ruben Amorim’s plans for the 2025-26 season.

  • WHAT GARNACHO SAID

Speaking to Chelsea's official club website, Garnacho said of his move: "It’s an incredible moment for my family and I to join this great club. I can’t wait to get started.

"I watched the Club World Cup and to join the world champions is special – we’re the best team in the world! It’s amazing to be here and I’m very happy."

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Emerging through United’s youth academy, Garnacho made his senior debut for the club in a 1-1 draw with Chelsea in the Premier League in April 2022. He then became a regular in the United first team, helping the Red Devils win the Carabao Cup in 2022-23 and the FA Cup in 2023-24 under Erik ten Hag’s stewardship. However Garnacho endured a difficult relationship with current United boss Amorim, with the winger being omitted – alongside Rashford – from the matchday squad which faced rivals Manchester City in the derby in December 2024. And Garnacho would later express his frustration at only being used as a 71st-minute substitute in United's 1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final in May.

The good vibes are back at Bayer Leverkusen! Director aims 'atmosphere' dig at Erik ten Hag and says players 'know what they're supposed to do' again after friendly win

Bayer Leverkusen chief Simon Rolfes appeared to indicate there are no regrets over Erik ten Hag's sacking, saying a "good atmosphere" has returned.

Leverkusen chief takes swipe at Ten HagAdds players are not clueless anymoreDutch coach sacked after three gamesFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Leverkusen's managing director of sport is leaving no stone unturned in re-emphasising that Ten Hag's appointment was a disaster, but that his subsequent shock sacking could be nothing less than a blessing. Indeed, Rolfes has claimed that the good vibes have returned in the dressing room after the Dutchman's dismissal, with players now aware of "what they are supposed to do" on the pitch.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

The 2023-24 Bundesliga champions decided to take a gamble on Ten Hag after Xabi Alonso's appointment as the next Real Madrid manager was made official at the end of May. Following an underwhelming spell at Manchester United, the expectation was that the former Ajax coach would thrive in Bundesliga, where the media spotlight and the pressure are considerably lower than the Premier League.

However, Ten Hag was handed the massive task of taking on a Leverkusen in the depths of a massive overhaul. Indeed, Die Werkself offloaded core players such as Florian Wirtz, Jonathan Tah, Jeremie Frimpong, Piero Hincapie, Lukas Hradecky, Granit Xhaka and Victor Boniface without reinforcing the squad adequately. While Ten Hag won his first competitive game with Leverkusen, a 4-0 win in the first round of the DFB-Pokal, he was relieved of his duties after a loss and a draw in the opening two games of the league.

WHAT SIMON ROLFES SAID

Leverkusen bounced back with a 2-1 win over third-tier side Viktoria Koln in a friendly on Wednesday, with Rogier Meijer and Andries Ulderink in charge as interim coaches. Rolfes was delighted after the win, saying he has noticed a significant uptick this week.

"I definitely sense a good atmosphere. That was also the case during the last two days of training and in the game," he said. "We had a good structure, good routines, so it was really good. Rogier did a great job in his speech and in his preparation for the game. I think that showed. The boys knew what to do, what they were supposed to do, and they executed it well."

He added: "Lucas [Vazquez] naturally brings a lot of experience and quality to our game, and he and Loic [Bade] led the way in terms of communication today. With Equi Fernandez you could see that he was getting better every minute. It was important for all of them today."

Meijer, the assistant coach, has taken over managerial duties in the interim, as Leverkusen scramble to find a suitable replacement for Ten Hag. In the days since his sacking, the Bundesliga giants have been linked with some high-profile names. Former Borussia Dortmund coach Edin Terzic is reportedly on the club's radar, while speculation also suggests that Real Madrid legend and former Schalke forward Raul could possibly land his first top-flight job after he was linked to Eintracht Frankfurt. Ange Postecoglou, who was fired by Spurs after guiding them to Europa League triumph at the end of last season, is another name Leverkusen are interested in.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Kane opted for trophies over individual success in his home country when he swapped Spurs for Munich in a €100 million (£86m/$116m) move two years ago. Despite already being within touching distance of Alan Shearer's Premier League goal-scoring record, Kane chose to begin a new path and has continued his outstanding scoring exploits in Germany, netting 65 times in 65 Bundesliga games for the Bavarian giants. Owen and Ferdinand agreed that Kane would have been a game-changer had he signed for Manchester United in place of Bayern.

  • WHAT OWEN SAID

Owen said: "Well, I mean, Harry Kane, I think, is just lethal. I think he's a brilliant finisher. A brilliant finisher. I disagreed with him going to Germany. I was outspoken about that. I still think he was nuts."

Ferdinand responded: "Even though he won the league?"

Owen replied: "Mate! And? You're on the verge of being the all-time Premier League goal-scorer. You've got kids that are all in school. I mean, I just couldn't see it. I don't see it. And if you're that desperate to win something, then, you know, do another year and then go to a… But to go and just win, it's like, you know, if you go up and move to Celtic and win the league, are you like, oh yeah, I know I changed that. You win every year, but there's no great achievement in that. A great achievement would have been being the top goal-scorer ever in the Premier League. That would have been unbelievable and he could have won things along the way."

Though a Premier League return could be on the cards someday, Kane's focus this year will be looking to win the Champions League in addition to defending the Bundesliga title with Bayern. Five England players to watch in the IPL

With a record number of England players taking part in this year’s IPL, we pick five who could make a big impact

Alan Gardner05-Apr-20185:36

New England players are more interested in T20s – Swann

Ben Stokes Rajasthan Royals
Last year’s Most Valuable Player, Stokes was back in the auction pot due to his team, Rising Pune Supergiant, not being involved. The returning Royals – one of the suspended franchises that Supergiant had replaced for two seasons – duly coughed up GBP1.37m (USD1.95m) for his services this time around, despite the uncertainty around his availability because of court proceedings in the UK. With his trial for affray pushed back to August, Stokes should now be available for most of the group stage (he will be due back in England on May 17 if named in the Test squad to face Pakistan), and will be aiming to live up to his hefty price tag with another campaign marked by aggressive hitting, canny bowling and spectacular fielding.Jos Buttler Rajasthan Royals
Royals are likely to field two of England’s most blockbuster talents in their starting XI, after signing Buttler for GBP480,000 (USD680,000). When the ECB began to relent in its opposition to the IPL – which encroaches on the English season – a couple of years ago, Buttler was among the first to blaze a trail, with Mumbai Indians. His two seasons in Mumbai blue were a qualified success (average: 25.09; strike rate: 145.98), although perhaps his most memorable contribution to their 2017 title win was dropping his towel while filming an Instagram video celebrating the moment of victory (Buttler’s involvement was curtailed by England obligations). Has spent the winter widening his experience of T20 leagues around the world, with stints in Australia’s Big Bash and the Bangladesh Premier League.Alex Hales Sunrisers Hyderabad
Hales is one of the beneficiaries of the ball-tampering scandal that erupted last week, brought in by Sunrisers as a replacement for David Warner after the Australian was barred from this year’s IPL. Despite initially missing out on selection at the auction in January, Hales decided to sign a white-ball only contract with his county, Nottinghamshire, in order to focus on the shorter formats; he was then selected from the reserve list to fill the hole in Sunrisers’ line-up, although he has big shoes to fill – Warner captained the franchise to the title in 2016 and was the tournament’s leading run-scorer last year. Hales went to the IPL in 2015, as an injury replacement for Mumbai, but did not play a game.Chris Woakes in his delivery stride•BCCIChris Woakes Royal Challengers Bangalore
Although his GBP500,000 (USD700,000) signing by Kolkata Knight Riders in 2017 was slightly less eye-catching, in comparison to stratospheric deals for the likes of Stokes and Tymal Mills, Woakes enjoyed a quietly productive debut season in the competition. The allrounder finished joint-sixth on the wicket-takers’ list, with 17 in 13 matches alongside an economy rate of 8.77, despite often bowling at the death. He has since credited playing with the expectation placed on overseas players at the IPL as a factor in his development as England’s attack leader in white-ball cricket, and despite not being retained by KKR for 2018, his price was pushed up through the million-dollar barrier by Royal Challengers Bangalore, who are seeking their first title after several near-misses.Mark Wood Chennai Super Kings
A raw quick with a reputation for larking about, Wood could be the joker in the pack when it comes to England’s representatives at the IPL. Picked up on the cheap (by IPL standards) for GBP164,000 (USD234,000) in this year’s auction, Wood will be joining another of the returning franchises and one of the competition’s iconic names: CSK have twice been champions, four times runners-up and never failed to qualify from the group stage. The injury-prone Wood has only played 18 T20 games in his entire career, but provided a glimpse of what he is capable of when taking 4 for 25 – which included yorking Jonny Bairstow and giving Joe Root a fearful working-over – during the 2016 NatWest Blast semi-final.Other England players involved: Jason Roy (Delhi Daredevils); Moeen Ali (Royal Challengers Bangalore); Sam Billings (Chennai Super Kings); Chris Jordan (Sunrisers Hyderabad); Tom Curran (Kolkata Knight Riders); Liam Plunkett (Delhi Daredevils)

“We are really excited to add both Daryl and Colin to our squad and to be able to do so for such a large portion of the 2023 season – which was a key factor for us when looking to make overseas additions this year,” Chilton said.”The schedule, as it has been for the last few years, continues to be really challenging particularly in the middle part of the summer throughout May, June and July, due to the amount of cricket we’re playing in a short period. With that in mind, we want to ensure we’ve got enough strength in depth to cover for all eventualities and Daryl and Colin provide us with exactly that.”It has been a tricky process to try and add the right overseas players to our squad – in terms of both availability and quality – but I think we have found the perfect fit with two experienced international cricketers, who will bring quality to our changing room.”Colin will be with us from the very start against Surrey in the County Championship before Daryl joins up in mid-May, the pair will then both be available throughout our Vitality Blast campaign and, alongside Dane Vilas, provide us with plenty of options for different matches and scenarios.”Mitchell, who played for Middlesex in 2021 and was Blackpool CC’s professional in 2016, was New Zealand’s Player of the Series during last summer’s tour of England, when he scored 538 runs at 107.60.”I am delighted to be joining Lancashire this English summer,” he said. “The county has a proud history and having lived in Manchester as a child for a couple of years – it’s special to return in this way.”I had a taste of the Vitality Blast and County Championship with Middlesex in 2021 and I am really looking forward to trying to make contributions in both competitions for Lancashire this summer. The chance to test my skills again in two strong competitions is exciting as a player.”I really enjoy playing in English conditions and the special history of the game around the country. I have very fond memories of my two tours to England with New Zealand and hope to build more with Lancashire. It will also be great to link up with my old Blackpool team-mates Steven Croft and Richard Gleeson having played there for a summer in 2016.”De Grandhomme retired from international cricket last year and has a wealth of experience in T20 competitions around the world, playing in the BBL, IPL and CPL, as well as the Hundred in England.De Grandhomme added: “I’m really looking forward to the opportunity of playing for Lancashire this season. I’ve loved playing county cricket previously and I can’t wait to get to England in April to kick off the season with the Red Rose.”Lancashire has an exciting squad who have been so close to silverware in the last couple of years, hopefully I can help to add some experience to the dressing room so that we can go one step further this season.”Emirates Old Trafford is a world-class venue, one which I have played at before in New Zealand colours and I can’t wait to pull on a Lancashire shirt in front of the club’s members and supporters.”

Gill to open instead of Kishan in series opener

Big picture: India overwhelming favourites

A few years ago, Sri Lanka were truly pathetic in the ODI format, but look, they’re a little better now. Or this is at least what we’re hoping. In the last year, they’ve won six of their 10 completed ODIs. Full disclosure, six of those matches were against Zimbabwe and Afghanistan. But then there was a glorious home series victory over Australia as well. In general, they are passing off as a team on an upward trajectory. The problem is, India of course are monsters at home. Since the start of 2020, They’ve won nine of their 12 completed ODIs in the country (and how strange a reality that India have only played 12 ODIs at home in the space of three years, when there used to be a time when they would have played 12 against Sri Lanka alone in that time.)And let’s not talk about how the teams line up on paper. Because on paper, India tend to smash Sri Lanka every time now. Thankfully, on the field, the rivalry has not been quite so one-sided, in T20Is at least. But we’re switching to ODI mode now, the World Cup in India late this year on everyone’s horizon. Sri Lanka have some serious personnel-searching to do before then. Who will support the (currently injured) Dushmantha Chameera as a seam-bowling quick? Is the talented but uncapped (in this format) Dilshan Madushanka the bowler they will look to? How about hit-the-deck seam-merchant Kasun Rajitha? Or will they go back to the quicker Lahiru Kumara, who in 15 ODIs, has not impressed, but has recently shown signs of improvement with the white ball?Related

And can they get their spin attack sorted? Wanindu Hasaranga is a world-beating T20 legspinner, but his ODI record is modest in comparison. Maheesh Theekshana’s is only a little better. They are rightly Sri Lanka’s top picks, but have some work to do in this format.India have so much less to work out, and less to prove. Theirs are problems of plenty. Suryakumar Yadav, who played an incandescent T20I innings in the last few days, may conceivably be omitted from this top order. If he does play, then Shreyas Iyer will likely have to make way.

In the spotlight: Another Kohli masterclass incoming?

Virat Kohli‘s record against Sri Lanka is fearsome. In 46 innings against this opposition, he has 2220 runs – second only to his tally against the West Indies, and only marginally. He has eight hundreds and eleven fifties against them, and despite many of these matches coming on slow Sri Lankan tracks, has a strike rate of 91. There are perhaps brighter batting lights in the Indian galaxy right now, but few that Sri Lanka’s bowlers will fear more than Kohli. He’s fresh off an ODI century too, having hit 113 against Bangladesh in December. There can be little question now, that Sri Lanka’s white-ball fortunes have turned a corner since Dasun Shanaka became captain. Mostly, the turnaround has come in the T20 format (hello, Asia Cup). But in ODIs too, there does seem to be some semblance of a revival. The issue for Shanaka is that he has been a poor ODI player so far, averaging less than 25 with the bat, even if with a healthy strike rate of 94, often coming in towards the death stage of an innings. He’s in spectacular form at present, and will want that to carry into the ODIs.Shubman Gill will open the innings with Rohit Sharma on Tuesday•Getty Images

Pitch and conditions

In the one ODI played at Guwahati, in 2018, West Indies made 322 for 8, then India chased it down easy, in the 43rd over. No rain is expected to interrupt this match.

Team news: Iyer or SKY in the XI?

Rohit said in the pre-match presser that Shubman Gill would start ahead of Ishan Kishan, despite Kishan scoring a double-hundred in his last ODI. That means KL Rahul is likely to take a place in the XI as the wicketkeeper. Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav could be in a battle too. Same with Arshdeep Singh and Umran Malik.India XI (possible): 1 Rohit Sharma (capt.), 2 Shubman Gill, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 KL Rahul (wk) 5 Shreyas Iyer, 6 Hardik Pandya, 7 Axar Patel, 8 Yuzvendra Chahal/Kuldeep Yadav, 9 Mohammed Siraj, 10 Mohammed Shami, 11 Arshdeep Singh/ Umran MalikSri Lanka have some decisions to make on the seam-bowling front, but their top order and spin attack should be reasonably settled.Sri Lanka (possible): 1 Kusal Mendis (wk), 2 Pathum Nissanka, 3 Avishka Fernando, 4 Dhananjaya de Silva, 5 Charith Asalanka, 6 Dasun Shanaka, 7 Wanindu Hasaranga, 8 Chamika Karunaratne, 9 Maheesh Theekshana, 10 Kasun Rajitha, 11 Dilshan Madushanka/Lahiru Kumara

Stats and trivia

  • In 13 completed ODIs since 2015, India have won 10 and Sri Lanka 3. Only three of those matches have been in India, however, with India winning two of those.
  • Kohli’s tally of 19 50-plus scores against Sri Lanka is second only to his tally against West Indies, against whom he has made 20 such scores.
  • While Shanaka’s T20I record in India is outstanding, with 378 runs at a strike rate of 149, he has never played an ODI in the country.

After a 1-1 draw in Moscow, the 2008 Champions League final went to penalties. Petr Cech's save from Cristiano Ronaldo had put Chelsea in the driving seat and Terry had the chance to seal the win with the Blues' fifth spot-kick, but the former captain slipped and his shot smashed the post. The shootout went to sudden death and Nicolas Anelka's effort was saved by Edwin van der Sar, ensuring the Red Devils lifted the trophy.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Michael Ballack, Juliano Belletti, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole had all netted before Terry stepped up. Both Salomon Kalou and Anelka, forwards by trade, were yet to shoot when Terry made the walk from the halfway line to the penalty area, and Makelele has claimed the legendary centre-back's desire to be in the spotlight ultimately cost Chelsea what would have been their first ever Champions League trophy.

  • WHAT MAKELELE SAID

Speaking on talkSPORT's The LineUp show, in association with BetMGM, Makelele said: "The dressing room after the game was like fire. There was no happiness whatsoever – it was a sad place to be.

"We made a big mistake ahead of the penalties. We had an order which was agreed with the players and the manager, but it changed at the last minute.

"It was supposed to be Salomon Kalou taking the last penalty but John [Terry] took the opportunity off him.

"I think we lost this competition because football is very harsh sometimes and, if you don't do things the right way, you get punished.

"I was very angry when he missed the penalty because it was a chance that I knew a lot of the young players wouldn't get.

"I'd won the Champions League before but, in this moment, John had to be the leader and do what was best for the team.

"He didn't make sure we won the trophy, he tried to be a hero. If he knew this, he would have been a hero because he would have lifted the trophy."
