Fraser-McGurk's 27-ball 84 and Rasikh Salam's 3 for 34 lift Capitals to fifth place

Chasing a big target, MI were in the hunt courtesy Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya and Tim David, but they fell short in the end

Moody: ‘Fraser-McGurk’s mind in the right place’

In another run fest in IPL 2024, Jake Fraser-McGurk’s 84 off 27 balls proved to be the difference as Delhi Capitals (DC) beat Mumbai Indians (MI) by ten runs in Delhi.Apart from Fraser-McGurk, Shai Hope and Tristan Stubbs also played crucial knocks for DC as they posted 257 for 4 after being sent in. In reply, MI lost three wickets in the powerplay – the big ones of Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav – but Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya kept their hopes alive.Rasikh Salam, however, turned the game by dismissing Hardik and Nehal Wadhera in the same over. While Tilak and Tim David fought till the end, MI eventually fell short. The win took DC to fifth place on the points table with ten points from as many games. MI stay rooted to ninth with six points from nine matches.2:15

Did Mumbai miss a trick against Fraser-McGurk?

Fraser-McGurk gives DC a blazing startAs he has done often in his fledgling career so far, Fraser-McGurk did not waste time getting his eye in and his bat swinging. With a slightly open stance to left-arm seamer Luke Wood, he smashed the first three balls of the innings for 4, 4 and 6.After taking 19 from the first over, he greeted Jasprit Bumrah in the same manner. Bumrah started his over with a slower ball only to be launched over long-on for a six. To make things worse, Bumrah had overstepped, and Fraser-McGurk drilled the free-hit past long-on for four. Fraser-McGurk ended the over with another boundary, making it Bumrah’s most expensive over (18 runs) of the season.DC reached 50 in just 2.4 overs, the joint-fastest for a team in the IPL. In the next over, Fraser-McGurk got to his own fifty. Coming off just 15 balls, it was the joint-fourth fastest in the tournament’s history.Kishan fined for Code of Conduct breach

Mumbai Indians’ wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan has been reprimanded and fined 10% of his match fee for breaching the IPL’s Code of Conduct. Kishan, who scored 20 off 14, was charged with a Level 1 offence under Article 2.2 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct. Kishan admitted to the offence and accepted the match referee’s sanction.

Hardik brought himself on for the fifth over but there was no stopping Fraser-McGurk, who hammered the MI captain for two fours and two sixes to take DC to 89 for no loss after five overs. For a moment, it looked like Fraser-McGurk might break the record for the fastest T20 hundred – he already has the fastest List A hundred to his name – but he holed out to deep midwicket against Piyush Chawla for a 27-ball 84.Shai Hope smashed five sixes in his 17-ball 41•BCCIHope, Stubbs keep DC on course for big totalWalking in at 114 for 1 in 7.3 overs, Hope ensured there was no dip in the momentum. Over the last one year or so, he has worked on his six-hitting skills and has demonstrated the same in ODIs but was unable to do so in T20s. On Saturday, though, he smashed five sixes in a 17-ball 41 to keep DC going in the middle overs. After Hope fell, Stubbs took over and raced to 48 not out off 25 balls. In the 18th over, he used scoops, reverse-scoops and pulls to hit five fours and a six off Wood. Despite Bumrah dismissing Rishabh Pant in the 19th and conceding only six, DC had no trouble in crossing 250.DC dominate the other powerplay tooMI had a brisk start to their chase with Ishan Kishan hitting three successive fours off Khaleel Ahmed in the second over. But Khaleel made a good comeback and had Rohit Sharma caught at mid-off in his next over. From the other end, Mukesh Kumar had Kishan miscuing one to make it 45 for 2.Suryakumar Yadav started with a flurry of boundaries, including two scooped sixes. But in the last over of the powerplay, he failed to pick a slower ball from Khaleel and fell for 26 off 13 balls.Rasikh Salam sent back Hardik Pandya and Nehal Wadhera in the same over•BCCIRasikh has an impact, againMI had slowed down a bit after the powerplay but Hardik put them back on track. He hit Axar Patel for a six off the last ball of the eighth over and then smacked three fours and a six off Kuldeep Yadav in the ninth. Tilak, who was batting on a run-a-ball eight till then, also got into the act with a six and a four in Axar’s next over.MI were still playing catch-up when Rasikh, after coming in as Impact Player, pegged them further back with a two-wicket over. Hardik ended up skying a back-of-the-hand slower ball to backward point and Nehal Wadhera guided a length delivery straight to Pant. That left MI needing 117 from seven overs with five wickets in hand.Tilak, David fight hard but in vainTilak and David kept the fight going. Tilak hit Kuldeep for two fours and two sixes in a 21-run 15th over to bring the equation down to 85 from five overs. But another excellent over by Rasikh, which went for only seven, made it 64 required from three.David took on Mukesh and hit him for two sixes and a four to start the 18th over but was lbw off the next ball. Rasikh went for 16 in the penultimate over but dismissed Mohammad Nabi, which meant it was Tilak or bust for MI with 25 required from the final over.Tilak went for a risky second run off the first ball of that over only to be caught short, and Mukesh held his nerve for the next five balls to seal the win for DC.

Mumbai look to stretch home streak and keep CSK winless away

CSK are yet to win an away game this IPL and their next two matches are on the road

Moody’s advice to CSK:’ Deny Bumrah wickets’

Match detailsMumbai Indians (P5 W2 L3 7th) vs Chennai Super Kings (P5 W3 L2 3rd)
Mumbai, 7.30pm IST (2pm GMT)Big pictureIt’s the IPL’s biggest rivalry. At the Wankhede Stadium. On a double-header Sunday. But has the rivalry mellowed down this time? Possibly because it’s the first time in over a decade the CSK-Mumbai game will not witness Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni as captains, as Hardik Pandya and Ruturaj Gaikwad have taken over at the helm. So, what’s in store in this new era?Two away games and two losses. It’s a small sample size, but CSK are yet to post a win away from home in this IPL. After winning three out of five games, they now go on the road – the first stop is Mumbai and then Lucknow – before going back to Chepauk after 15 days. Can they be at home, away from home, when they meet a strong host?Mumbai, though, registered two wins in a row after succumbing to three straight defeats. The turnaround was possible due to their strong batting performances. Their top six batters strike at more than 147 each and this firepower reflected in their scores of 234 for 5 and 199 for 3 in their last two games, which were played at the Wankhede Stadium. With Suryakumar Yadav finding his feet sooner than later with a 19-ball 52 in his second game after returning from injury, Mumbai’s line-up is looking solid again. However, the same cannot be said of the bowling group. Barring Jasprit Bumrah, Mumbai’s bowlers have been guilty of going for plenty of runs. They have been expensive at the death, especially, going at 12.31 runs an over – the third-most runs leaked by any team thus far in this IPL (before the Punjab Kings vs Rajasthan Royals game on Saturday).CSK would also want to tighten their bowling. In their two away losses in Visakhapatnam and Hyderabad, their bowlers struggled for early wickets. There’s still uncertainty surrounding their pace mainstay Matheesha Pathirana’s participation. Against a dangerous Mumbai side on a seam-friendly surface, CSK will be expecting the likes of Mustafizur Rahman and Deepak Chahar to do the bulk of damage.Related

Matheesha Pathirana did some bowling before CSK’s previous game against Kolkata Knight Riders at home but didn’t feature as a precautionary measure. Coach Stephen Fleming is hopeful of having his death-bowling specialist back for Sunday’s game or next Friday’s clash against Luckow Super Giants. While Mustafizur, who had to leave for home to work on getting a US visa, returned to the XI at Chepauk, Chahar had missed that match with a niggle. He might return to the team against Mumbai, if he’s fit.Likely XII: 1 Ruturaj Gaikwad (capt), 2 Rachin Ravindra, 3 Ajinkya Rahane, 4 , 5 Daryl Mitchell, 6 Ravindra Jadeja, 7 Sameer Rizvi, 8 MS Dhoni (wk), 9 Deepak Chahar, 10 Tushar Deshpande, 11 Matheesha Pathirana/Maheesh Theekshana, 12 1:48

Who will be CSK’s key batter in Mumbai?

In the spotlight – Bumrah and ChaharJasprit Bumrah is fresh off a five-wicket haul against RCB and has been phenomenal in containing the batters. He is the only Mumbai player to have an economy rate under six this IPL and he has claimed seven of his ten wickets in three innings at the Wankhede, at a stunning economy rate of 5.75. In an otherwise misfiring bowling unit, Mumbai will once again rely on Bumrah, the most experienced fast bowler in the attack, to keep CSK quiet, especially at the death. For CSK, how Deepak Chahar performs in the powerplay will be key to their success. At the Wankhede, he has fared well in the first six overs, picking up ten wickets in ten games at an economy rate of 7.59. Chahar is also the only player who hasn’t played for Mumbai Indians to have taken wickets in double digits in this phase at Wankhede. With four wickets in four matches this season, can Chahar step up against the likes of Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav?1:25

McClenaghan: The Wankhede conditions will suit Ravindra

Stats that matter Shivam Dube’s IPL strike rate is as low as 111.97 at the Wankhede, his home ground in domestic cricket. CSK have the third-best death-overs economy rate (9.85) in IPL 2024 so far, with Mumbai at 12.31, the third-worst in the same phase. Mumbai have bowled a total of 173 dot balls, the second-fewest for a team this season. Kishan’s strike rate this IPL is 182.95 so far, his best in any IPL season.Pitch and conditionsIn the last match, Hardik Pandya termed the venue as a “chasing ground” – two of the three matches in this IPL were won by the teams batting second. After a low-scoring opening game in which Rajasthan Royals chased down 126, Wankhede has been a batting paradise, with a total of 834 runs hit in the next two games. One can expect another high-scoring match on Sunday. The surface has also assisted pacers traditionally.Quotes”Everyone thinks about hitting offspinners, when they come into the attack. Even I have the same mentality as a batter – to try and hit at least two sixes against offspin. I use that mentality while bowling and try prevent myself from getting hit. If there is no turn, I try to attack batters and pick up wickets.”
“Ruturaj is as cool as it gets; I know the last captain was pretty cool and this guy is cut from the same cloth. He is such an impressive young man around his game and what he needs to do. He is unfairly put into a bracket where he is called slow but you need to have context to some of these stats. The last game was a great example of how a leader plays.”

Shanto wants Tamim 'available in all formats' for Bangladesh

Najmul Hossain Shanto, the Bangladesh captain, has become the first major voice in months to ask for Tamim Iqbal’s presence in the national set-up, saying “if he is fit, I want him available for all formats”.Shanto and Tamim, whose appearances for Bangladesh have been sporadic of late, spoke after the Dhaka Premier League match between Abahani Limited and Prime Bank Cricket Club at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka on Monday. They had initially sat down to talk in the viewing area in one of the dressing rooms, but seeing too many cameras hovering around, they stepped out of view.”I had a nice, long [chat] with Tamim . We generally spoke about cricket. I asked about his well-being. We spoke about how we think about captaincy,” Shanto said on Tuesday after refusing to open up on Monday. “He has asked for a bit of time. He will think it over. We are in the middle of the Dhaka Premier League, so once the tournament is over, there will be more clarity. I can’t really tell you exactly what’s going on, since it is now a matter of biding our time.”Related

Shanto was emphatic when he spoke of wanting Tamim in his team, even suggesting that Tamim unretire from T20Is, which he did in 2022.”[Tamim] retired from T20Is but if he is fit, I want him available for all formats,” Shanto said. “I think everyone in this country wants that. This is what I want but before everything, we have to see what he wants. Then the rest of the process. I spoke to him about what I want as a captain.”Tamim’s international future has been unclear since he fell out with the BCB ahead of the 2023 ODI World Cup. He had initially retired from international cricket on July 6 last year, but reversed the decision the following day after intervention from the country’s prime minister. He resigned from the ODI captaincy in August. He briefly returned to the Bangladesh team in September, but then had a scrap with a senior BCB official, following which Shakib Al Hasan questioned his commitment to Bangladesh cricket during an interview.Since then, Tamim has led Fortune Barishal to their first BPL title as he returned to competitive cricket. Two BCB directors have spoken to him, but there is no final word on the matter.Tamim’s thoughts on the matter weren’t immediately known. But he will have time till the end of the T20 World Cup to think about his future. His fitness, of course, will be a point of discussion.

Shanto: ‘We don’t have any T20 specialists’

The big one next up is the T20 World Cup, in the Caribbean and the USA, and Shanto has urged Bangladesh’s fans and media not to have too many expectations of the team. He said the upcoming five-match T20I series at home against Zimbabwe will help them figure out their plans going into the tournament.”The team is doing well, having won many of the recent T20I series. We definitely want to play on better wickets, especially those that were used in the T20I series against Sri Lanka,” Shanto said. “We will obviously try to replicate the wickets we will get in America. Although I don’t think it will be easy. We definitely want to finish well at home, so this series [against Zimbabwe] is very important.”We don’t have any T20 specialists so we play as a team. When we do that, we usually win. Overall, our pace-bowling unit has improved a lot. We have strength in spin and batting too. We win when everyone contributes.”

> Veja classificação e simulador do Paulistão-2023 clicando aqui

Bayern will discover the identity of the new season's first Champions League opponent when the league phase draw is made by UEFA on August 28. As was the case last season when the competition was overhauled and reformatted, eight teams will be drawn for Bayern to face, needing to finish in the top 24 of the 36-team standings to qualify for the knockout rounds – a top eight finish means a bye straight to the last 16.

Matchday one will be played on September 16-18, but the new European jersey will actually debut sooner than that, in a pre-season game against Tottenham Hotspur at the Allianz Arena on August 7.

Patidar, bowlers keep RCB in playoffs race with NRR-boosting win

A fifth successive win not only kept Royal Challengers Bengaluru in contention for a playoffs spot but also lifted them to fifth spot on the points table, just above Delhi Capitals who have the same points as RCB but an inferior net run rate. The M Chinnaswamy had gone all quiet when RCB lost Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli inside four overs. It seemed their batting troubles from the start of the season had come back to haunt them. Will Jacks and Rajat Patidar put to rest any such worries with a counter-attacking partnership, but the DC bowlers struck back with a near-perfect death-overs show to restrict RCB to 187 for 9.With the Bengaluru crowd firmly behind them, the RCB bowlers had their tails up. They reduced DC to 30 for 4, which included the massive wicket of Jake Fraser-McGurk, who was run out at the non-striker’s end after a straight drive from Shai Hope deflected off Yash Dayal’s fingers onto the stumps.

The Kohli-Ishant duel lights up the start

In his 250th IPL outing, Kohli had a relatively easy opponent first up: Ishant Sharma, against whom he had scored 93 off 67 balls without being dismissed. He kept out a sharp inswinger on the first ball of the match and then pulled one over square leg for a six on the last ball of the opening over.Ishant Sharma had the last laugh in his duel against Virat Kohli•BCCI

In Ishant’s next over, he hit a four – via an outside edge – and a crisply-timed no-look shot over wide long-on for a six off successive balls before nicking one behind to the wicketkeeper. With a 13-ball 27, Kohli made his intent clear but failed to do justice to the Midas touch he seemed to be in.

Patidar and Jacks make DC pay

Before Sunday, Patidar had been dismissed by pace in eight of his 11 outings in IPL 2024. But here, he raced to 15 off eight balls with the help of three fours in a Mukesh Kumar over. When Axar Patel, the stand-in captain for DC, brought himself on in the sixth over, Patidar duly slogged him over deep midwicket. He also tore into Kuldeep Yadav, bashing him straight over his head.At the other end, Jacks also hit Kuldeep for a six in each of his first two overs as RCB put the dismissals of their openers behind them. Thanks to the assault from Patidar and Jacks, RCB scored 49 in the four overs after the powerplay. In the process, Patidar brought up his fourth half-century in his last five innings, and his first in Bengaluru this season. That the fielders missed four chances in 11 balls, including two dropped catches in a Kuldeep over, did not help DC.

DC fight back through Khaleel, Salam

DC brought Rasikh Salam on in the 11th over and he could have dismissed Patidar first ball but Axar failed to hang on at cover. But Salam exacted revenge in his next over with a hard-length ball. Patidar looked to force it over the off side off the front foot but ended up miscuing it towards cover, where Axar moved to his right to pouch that. That brought curtains to his 88-run stand with Jacks, who fell soon after to Kuldeep.Khaleel Ahmed came away with 4-0-31-2•BCCI

But Mahipal Lomror and Cameron Green combined to take 22 off Kuldeep’s final over, the 17th of the innings, to raise RCB’s hopes. Khaleel Ahmed, who was taken for 23 in his first two overs, struck twice in three balls in the 18th over to dismiss Lomror and Dinesh Karthik. He finished with figures of 2 for 31 from his four overs. Salam got rid of Swapnil Singh and returned 2 for 23 from his three. DC conceded only 40 in the last four overs, and picked up five wickets, to keep RCB under 200 on a surface where the ball was gripping.

Axar fights a lone battle

Fraser-McGurk played true to his form and struck left-arm spinner Swapnil for a massive six over wide long-off to get going. Among those who have faced at least 30 balls of spin in IPL 2024, no batter strikes it higher than Fraser-McGurk’s 262.85. But a lucky break for RCB meant the DC opener walked back cheaply. This was after David Warner, back in the side after missing four matches, was out for 1 off two. Dayal had bounced out Abishek Porel cheaply. It was only the second time this season that RCB picked up four wickets inside the powerplay – earlier, they had done so against Sunrisers Hyderabad. In the middle overs, RCB seamers had a clear plan of hitting the good length and denying the batters room to free their arms. Between overs eight and 11, they bowled 16 deliveries on either good length or just short of it, and gave away just 15 runs off them.Only Axar, leading for the first time in the IPL, managed to offer some resistance with his second half-century of the season. He bookended Jacks’ only over with sixes to bring up his fifty off 30 balls. But long before he top-edged Dayal over backward point, where du Plessis back-tracked and took a tumbling catch, the result was a foregone conclusion.

Ballon d'Or Feminin 2025: Nominees revealed for the Golden Ball with Aitana Bonmati, Alessia Russo and Mariona Caldentey all in contention

The shortlist for world football's most prestigious individual award has been revealed ahead of the ceremony in Paris on September 22

It's been a few years since the winner of the Ballon d'Or Feminin has felt as difficult to predict as it does in 2025. There is a great handful of contenders who would be deserving of the award, as a result of outstanding seasons for club and country. But there can, of course, only be one winner – and we are now one step closer to finding out who that will be, following the announcement of this year’s nominees.

Will the Ballon d'Or belong to Aitana Bonmati for the third year in a row? The midfielder has scooped up plenty of individual awards throughout the year, having helped Barcelona win a domestic treble and Spain reach the Euro 2025 final. Alexia Putellas, winner of the Golden Ball in 2021 and 2022, is also right up there in the mix after her contributions for the Catalans and La Roja. Or perhaps the award could be given to someone from the Arsenal side that defeated Barca in the Champions League final, such as Mariona Caldentey, or one of the Lionesses who helped down Spain in the final of the Euros, like Alessia Russo.

We will have to wait until the ceremony in Paris on Monday, September 22 to find out, but for now, here are the players who have been shortlisted for football's ultimate individual honour…

Baltimore enjoyed a fantastic first season at Chelsea, playing a key role as the Blues won all three domestic honours on offer without losing a single game. That was despite her playing in a left-back position for most of the campaign, rather than in her usual spot in the forward line. The 25-year-old still managed nine goals and six assists in all competitions, with her outstanding performance in the FA Cup final a particular highlight.

Banda has been in excellent form since the new NWSL season started in March, scoring eight goals in her first 14 games, but the end of her 2024 campaign also counts towards the Ballon d'Or. That's particularly significant as it includes the period in which the forward helped fire the Orlando Pride to the NWSL Shield and a first-ever NWSL Championship.

After winning the Ballon d'Or in 2023 and 2024, Bonmati has a great case to do so again in 2025. She was named Player of the Tournament at Euro 2025, after helping Spain reach the final, and also won the Best Player award in the Champions League last season, in which Barcelona reached the final. Neither of those games saw Bonmati finish on the winning side, with England and Arsenal victorious respectively, but she did play a huge part in Barca's domestic treble.

AFPLucy Bronze (Chelsea)

Bronze was one of England's best players at Euro 2025, with her performance in the quarter-final win over Sweden a particular highlight as the Lionesses defended their title. Those displays came off the back of a terrific season at Chelsea, too, where the full-back was a key player in the Blues' domestic treble, scoring the goal that sealed their sixth Women's Super League title in a row.
