England batter Danni Wyatt has withdrawn from the WBBL, where she was set to play for Perth Scorchers, due to fatigue.Wyatt was a gold pick by Scorchers in the draft earlier this month after they had retained Sophie Devine at platinum. She was recently rested from England’s ODI series against Sri Lanka.Scorchers then signed Amy Jones via the direct nomination route to complete their trio of overseas but will now have to find a replacement for Wyatt.Related

Megan Schutt: 'I didn't have the skill or work ethic, I just happened to be able to swing a ball'

“We’re rapt to be able to have someone of Danni’s quality in orange,” Scorchers head coach Becky Grundy had said after the draft. “She’s shown in international cricket her ability to float up and down the order so there’s flexibility there.”Scorchers had set out with the aim to stock their top order during the draft with a belief their local players, alongside Devine, could carrying the bowling. The schedule in the women’s game continues to be increasingly busy with recent examples of players starting to pick and choose their tournaments. Smriti Mandhana and Nat Sciver-Brunt did not put their names into the WBBL draft.Speaking to ESPNcricinfo recently, Australia pace bowler Megan Schutt said more players were starting to have conversations about how much cricket they play.”Our schedule as a whole is pretty intimidating to be honest,” Schutt said. “But just having the choice is probably the ultimate opportunity in itself. There’s so many leagues now that if someone does want to do the T20 circuit, that’s bloody awesome.”If they have the body and desire to keep doing that then that’s cool. But it’s definitely daunting and something we’ve discussed with our coaches about how we are going to manage ourselves.”Meanwhile, Brisbane Heat have signed England legspinner Sarah Glenn as cover for New Zealand allrounder Amelia Kerr who will miss the start of the WBBL. Heat knew that Kerr would be unavailable early in the tournament but were always going to take her as their platinum pick.

ODI World Cup digest: Afghanistan pull off historic victory; Australia's hopes on a knife edge

The tournament has had its first upset – and one of the biggest of all time – while two teams face an almost must-win clash in Lucknow

Trott: ‘Manner and margin of Afghanistan’s win makes it significant’

–Fixtures | Squads | Points table | Tournament IndexTop Story: The Great Upset – Afghanistan bring World Cup to life with England conquestAfghanistan claimed the most famous scalp of their international history, and in the process provided the first big shock of the 2023 World Cup, by routing England’s world champions by 69 runs in a spin-and-seam masterclass under the Delhi floodlights.Their dominance was set in motion by a fearless display of power-hitting from the 21-year-old Rahmanullah Gurbaz, whose 80 from 57 had promised so much more until a run-out sawed him off in his prime. But Ikram Alikhil marshalled Afghanistan’s lower-order with a precious half-century in his first game of this year’s World Cup, whereupon they set about making a target of 285 seem as dim and distant as England’s hopes of defending their title must now feel.Click here for the full reportMatch analysis: Forget Bazball, this was GurbazballRashid Khan clinches Afghanistan’s historic win against England•Getty Images

The ball skidded past Mark Wood’s bat and into the stumps, and Rashid Khan stood with his arms outstretched, arching his back and facing the night sky. It was a moment to savour, one which will reverberate across Delhi, India and far beyond: Afghanistan had not only beaten the world champions, but thrashed them. This was the performance of a team with no fear or inhibition, attacking first with the bat and then with the ball. Afghanistan had won once in their 17 previous World Cup matches, a one-wicket victory over Scotland eight years ago: they were a team with nothing to lose, who gained everything.Amid political turmoil and humanitarian crises, India has become a home away from home for Afghanistan. This, their most famous night as a sporting nation, came in front of over 25,000 fans in a city with a substantial Afghan diaspora. Kumble on Australia’s limited spin attack

Even in a tournament with nine group-stage matches which allows room for a slip up or two, you don’t want to be 0-3 early in the competition. But that’s exactly the situation which will confront one of Australia and Sri Lanka after they face off in Lucknow in what already shapes as a contest to retain realistic semi-final hopes. Where some other teams – India, for instance – have torn up their ODI template and started over more than once over the last two World Cup cycles, Australia continue to play the way they’ve always played. They have an explosive line-up buttressed by a pair of busy anchors, and they trust in their best – which usually translates to Test – fast bowlers no matter what the conditions are.Read the full piece by Karthik Krishnaswamy in Lucknow

Head will open straightaway once he returns, says Bailey

Travis Head will slot straight back in at the top of Australia’s batting order when he is cleared to return to action, which could be as soon as their next game against Netherlands in Delhi on Wednesday, meaning a move down the list for the in-form Mitchell Marsh.Head, who had been recovering at home, linked up with the squad as they moved to Delhi on Saturday following their 62-run victory against Pakistan in Bengaluru, which was centred around a 259-run opening stand between Marsh and David Warner. But Marsh has only been keeping the seat warm for Head who suffered a broken hand in South Africa last month but was named in the World Cup squad despite being unavailable for the first part of the tournament.”Clearly [Head] comes in at the top,” chair of selectors George Bailey told reporters. “He’s been fantastic there for us and that’s where he’ll slot in. And then we’ll just work out when it is, who we’re playing, the surface and what you might need.”Having made significant concessions to carry Head during his injury, caution will be taken not to rush the final stages of his recovery so he could be held back for the game against New Zealand on October 28.”It can be a six to eight-week injury,” Bailey said. “He’s ticked all the boxes in terms of the four-week scan and the bone has healed, so that’s all going well, and he’s progressed really well through the week.”But clearly the whole point of having him and carrying him to this point is not to then risk it by bringing him back early. So if it works out that it’s the Dutch game, great. If it’s a little bit further on, then that’s okay.”Regardless of the comeback match, it will see a reshuffle of the order with Marsh likely slotting in at No. 3, or perhaps even lower down, with Marnus Labuschagne potentially the one to make way after Marcus Stoinis made an impact with the ball against Pakistan.Head has been prolific since returning to the ODI side in early 2022, averaging 60.84 with a strike rate of 119.14. He will also provide another useful spin-bowling option for Pat Cummins. After losing their opening two matches, Australia’s World Cup has been revived by convincing wins over Sri Lanka and Pakistan. If they beat Netherlands, as they are expected to do despite the upsets seen so far, they could face a tournament-defining week with back-to-back matches against England and New Zealand before a somewhat more favourable run to end the group stages with games against Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

Bangladesh meet Pakistan in derby of subcontinental misery

While one side has the slimmest of chances to reach the semi-finals, the other only has Champions Trophy qualification left to play for

Danyal Rasool30-Oct-20235:56

Mumtaz: Bringing Fakhar in for Imam could be a gamble worth taking

Big picture
This is as much a misery derby as it is a subcontinental one. But for England’s doomed title defence, Bangladesh and Pakistan are the two sides at the bottom of the form table, having combined to lose their last nine matches in this competition. In a sequence of events that has become wearily predictable, off-field drama has overshadowed the lack of on-field accomplishment. Shakib Al Hasan bizarrely flew back home to Bangladesh to work on his batting technique after their game against South Africa, while in Pakistan, accusations of unpaid salaries, player power, and PCB incompetence and malfeasance have already relegated World Cup performances to a sideshow. While Pakistan are trying to delay going back home for at least one more game, all Bangladesh have left is to attempt to book a flight to Pakistan in 2025. The ICC’s surprise late announcement that the top eight finishers at this World Cup would secure qualification to the 2025 Champions Trophy means Bangladesh have something to fight for after their 87-run defeat to the Netherlands officially made them the first side to be knocked out of semi-finals contention. New Zealand’s narrow defeat to Australia, meanwhile, has opened a tiny window of opportunity for Pakistan to still sneak through in historically Pakistan-esque circumstances, provided they win their remaining games and New Zealand lose theirs.Related

How Bangladesh became a shadow of themselves at the World Cup

Bradburn: Pakistan don't get to play a lot of the top nations

Neither of these sides, though, has earned the right to be talking about the semi-finals. Bangladesh’s campaign began with bright optimism after a respectable Asia Cup showing in which they finished third, and followed it up with a thumping win over Sri Lanka in a warm-up game. A half-decent opening game against England was backed up by a trouncing of Afghanistan, which, given the latter’s recent form, looks a much more impressive showing now than it was then given credit for. But they have crumbled spectacularly since, never coming close to victory in any of their last five games, that limp defeat to the Dutch the nadir.Pakistan are still drinking from that toxic concoction of hope and the threat of recriminations. Two wins to start off papered over some cracks, paper that India, Australia, Afghanistan and South Africa ripped apart to expose the barrenness of the structure they were building on. Injuries and a mystifying collective loss of form has meant this team is unrecognisable from the one that was ranked number one in this format just six weeks ago. With Babar Azam under pressure for his captaincy and dysfunction at the cricket board back home, Pakistan will want little more than to put off stepping into the ring of fire they’ll step into when they return home. And against Bangladesh, they have the opportunity to put in a performance that will enable them to keep dreaming. At the moment, it seems to be all they have.Form guide
Bangladesh LLLLL (last five completed ODIs, most recent first)
Pakistan LLLLWIn the spotlight
Shakib Al Hasan hasn’t had a World Cup campaign worth talking about but because of who he is, and what he has done in his 17-year career, he is always in the spotlight. Particularly in the last week after he hopped over to Dhaka for two batting sessions with his childhood mentor. While it may be unusual, Shakib has done this before, but it has come back to bite him after Bangladesh’s loss to the Netherlands. He has faced up to the media twice in three days, and said on Tuesday he was all about taking action. Now we have to wait for him to do just that. Not much has gone right for Shakib Al Hasan at this World Cup•Associated PressIt is perhaps no coincidence that Mohammad Rizwan’s success with the bat aligns with his side’s. Over their first two games, in which their keeper converted starts into scores of 68 and 131*, Pakistan put four points on the board. But ever since, what has more generally been a Pakistani batting problem has also been a Rizwan problem. Rizwan, like much of Pakistan’s middle order, has got himself in and, before any real damage can be done, got himself out. It has often been down to poor shot selection in the last four games – each of which Pakistan have lost. Dismissals at 49, 46 and 31 against India, Australia and South Africa cost his side of momentum at key junctures. When Rizwan goes deep, Pakistan tend to do well, which will be lost on neither him nor the opposition.Team news
Fakhar Zaman is fully fit, and given Imam-ul-Haq’s struggles could find himself presented another opportunity. Shadab Khan could not bowl against South Africa owing to concussion, and is not expected to be fit enough to play, giving Usama Mir another opportunity. Mohammad Nawaz’s troubles with the ball means a batting allrounder in Salman Ali Agha will replace him.Pakistan: 1 Abdullah Shafique, 2 Imam-ul-Haq/Fakhar Zaman, 3 Babar Azam (capt), 4 Mohammad Rizwan (wk), 5 Saud Shakeel, 6 Iftikhar Ahmed, 7 Salman Ali Agha, 8 Usama Mir, 9 Mohammad Wasim/Hasan Ali, 10 Shaheen Shah Afridi, 11 Haris Rauf.Bangladesh had a minor scare during training when Shakib walked off while batting with apparent neck pain. The weather is expected to be bright and sunny, and on the warmer side. While there is no information about the pitch yet, it’s the same venue where a low-scoring game played out between Netherlands and Bangladesh on Saturday.Stats and trivia
Since Bangladesh obtained Test status, they have qualified past the first round of the ODI World Cup as many times as Pakistan – twice in five attempts. Until last week, Pakistan hadn’t lost to South Africa in the ODI World Cup since 1999. That was also the last time they lost to Bangladesh at an ODI World Cup. Three of Bangladesh’s four all-time top ODI runscorers – Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib al Hasan, and Mahmudullah – are part of the present squad.

Elgar to retire from Tests after India series

Dean Elgar, South Africa’s former Test captain and stalwart opening batter, will play his last international series against India this summer. Elgar, 36, announced his decision to retire from international cricket after the New Year’s match, which is scheduled to start on January 3 in Cape Town.If in the playing XI for both Tests against India, Elgar will finish on 86 Tests in a career that has spanned 12 years. “Playing the game of cricket has always been a dream of mine but having the opportunity to represent your country is the ultimate! Having had the privilege to do it for 12 years internationally is simply beyond my wildest dreams,” he said in a statement. “It has been an incredible journey that I have been fortunate enough to have.”The Cape Town Test will be my last. My favourite stadium in the world. A place I scored my first Test run against New Zealand and hopefully my last too.”With 5146 runs, Elgar is South Africa’s eighth-highest run-scorer in Test cricket – only eight have gone past 5000 runs – and 352 runs behind Mark Boucher, who is seventh on the list.ESPNcricinfo understands that Elgar was informed that he was not part of red-ball coach Shukri Conrad’s long-term plans. He has been linked with Essex as an overseas player for the 2024 season.Elgar’s decision means he will be unavailable for South Africa’s two-Test series in New Zealand, where they will be forced to send a makeshift side because several frontline players will be involved in the SA20 league. Elgar does not have an SA20 deal and would have been the most experienced player in the squad, and potentially even asked to captain in Temba Bavuma’s absence. Instead, Titans’ batter Neil Brand is expected to lead South Africa and partner Tony de Zorzi at the top of the order. Brand and de Zorzi opened the batting together for South Africa A against West Indies A in a recent three-match series.Asked ten days ago whether Elgar was considering ending his international career, CSA director of cricket Enoch Nkwe told ESPNcricinfo that “nothing has come to my table”, but would be meeting with players and their agents “over the next couple of weeks”. Nkwe has held several discussions in the interim and paid tribute to Elgar’s contributions over the years.”Dean Elgar represents a rare brand of cricketer in an age where everything is about innovation and power-hitting. He is a real old-school cricketer that can dig in, absorb and fight. I have no doubt the game will dearly miss him,” Nkwe said. “He has always given everything for his country and never showed any fear, no matter the opposition. He was always there to take on the challenge, leading as captain when the country needed him most.”Dean Elgar led South Africa in 17 Tests, winning nine of them•AFP/Getty Images

Elgar made his debut in Perth on South Africa’s tour of Australia in 2012, when they were ranked No. 1 in the world, and became the 38th player to record a pair on debut – a list that stands at 45 now – but scored a century in his third match and went on to record 13 hundreds, against all Test opposition other than Pakistan and Zimbabwe. His favourite opponents were Sri Lanka, against whom he scored a match-winning hundred in Galle in 2014, followed by two more centuries in 2017 and 2021.Elgar stood in as captain for Faf du Plessis, who was on paternity leave, for the first Test of South Africa’s 2017 tour of England and again for two Tests against Pakistan in 2019, and was named permanent captain of the Test side in mid-2021. He led South Africa to series wins in the West Indies and against India at home, and drew a series against New Zealand in early 2022, which saw them top the World Test Championship (WTC) table at the time. But away losses to England and Australia in 2022-23 meant South Africa missed out on the WTC final earlier this year. Elgar was replaced as captain when there was a reshuffle of the coaching staff in February but continued to play under Bavuma. It is understood that Elgar was unhappy with the decision to be stood down but accepted a new central contract at the end of March. With South Africa only due to play two Test series in the 2023-2025 WTC cycle, Elgar felt his Test career would be limited by the schedule and sources have confirmed he wanted to finish on a high at home.
