England, New Zealand bring out the big guns as World Cup prep begins in earnest

Big picture: Lord’s finalists reunited

Change of week, change of format, change of headspace, same opponents … sort of.Forget the exploratory joustings that played out in a deeply peculiar T20I series, one in which England were a class apart until they were not, and in which New Zealand went from distracted cannon-fodder to destructive bomb-squaddies in the space of 48 hours. This time, things will be deadly serious from the get-go. Got it?Though not, let’s be clear, quite as serious as they’ll be getting in Ahmedabad in little under a month’s time, at the 2023 World Cup curtain-raiser. And certainly not a patch on the timeless drama that brought down the house at Lord’s four years ago, on the last occasion that these two teams crossed swords in the 50-over arena.Instead, we’re braced for … well, who rightly knows, if truth be told. After four years in mothballs, the ODI format is moving centre stage once again, braced for a comeback of Sinatra-esque proportions if the full hype of a World Cup in India is anything to go by. And yet, the journey that these two teams have taken in the interim rather epitomises the neglect that 50-over cricket has endured since that game of games. Can England and New Zealand reach an ODI cruising altitude from a standing start over the course of four games in eight days? That’s what we’re all itching to find out.For England, the most notable talking point is, inevitably, the return of Ben Stokes after his short-lived ODI retirement. And yet, he’s barely more of a stranger to the format than a host of his fellow World Cup heroes. Joe Root, for instance, last batted in a 50-over match on July 22 last year, three days after Stokes had said his farewells at Chester-le-Street, and has featured in just 15 such matches in four years.Jonny Bairstow is also coming back from a 14-month hiatus, albeit much of that relates to his horrific broken leg. But even Jos Buttler, the captain, has played in barely half of England’s contests since the World Cup final (23 out of 39), while Brydon Carse, the reserve seamer, has played more times than their designated spearhead Mark Wood (9 to 8).Joe Root is one of several England players returning to ODI action•PA Photos/Getty Images

The ECB’s dereliction of the format post-2019 has been uncompromising – not least with the birth of the Hundred relegating domestic 50-over cricket to a feeder competition. And yet, the lack of ODI game-time is far from a uniquely English issue.Between their twin World Cup final appearances in 2015 and 2019, New Zealand racked up a healthy 76 matches (and 43 wins); that number has plummeted to 36 (and 21) in the four years since. And aside from the near-permanent fixture, the captain Tom Latham (35 caps), no player has featured in more than 70% of those – least of all the most in-demand man in their ranks, Trent Boult, the last of whose ten caps came almost exactly a year ago in Cairns. What does any of this actually prove in this day and age, however? New Zealand’s slow start to the T20I series could in part be attributed to their crazy, atomised build-up, with half the squad flying in from a low-key series in the UAE and the rest floating along via stints of varying lengths in the Hundred. But, equally, their flying finish showed how quickly professional outfits can find sufficient cohesion amid the madcap treadmill lifestyle.Besides, as England’s Test team have spent the past year and a bit proving with their Bazball revolution, who the hell cares about preparation these days anyway? Stokes, Root, Bairstow, Moeen Ali, Wood and Chris Woakes are among the senior players to have peaced out on Brendon McCullum’s good vibes in recent months – be it sacking off warm-up matches for an extra round of golf, or breaking the pre-Test tension with a six-hitting competition on the practice strip. And yet, none of that carefree attitude could ever have been allowed to take root had it not been trialled and approved in the course of the white-ball renaissance that preceded it. And so for England in particular, this series is about coming full circle – about forgetting all circumstance and just doubling down on the instinctual cricket that turned them into world-beaters in the first place. As for New Zealand, they are the team from whom England took those initial cues back in 2015, and for all the over-riding sense that their own golden generation is now deep into transition, there’s still a sufficient well of experience within that dressing-room for them to go deep once again. And that depth of knowhow, incidentally, includes the as-yet unready Kane Williamson, who is inching his way back from long-term knee injury but is clearly a World Cup shoo-in given half a bill of health. His progress on the sidelines will be a subplot of the coming days, and a reminder too that so much about this World Cup build-up is about being all right on the night.Tom Latham speaks to the media ahead of the first ODI•Getty Images

In the spotlight: Ben Stokes and Trent Boult

“Lol” was Ben Stokes‘ succinct response on Twitter / X when news of his England ODI recall was confirmed by the ECB – an echo of Moeen’s famous response to Stokes’ own “Ashes?” WhatsApp message, asking if he would consider a Test comeback as Jack Leach’s replacement. It is unclear whether Jos Buttler phrased his petitions quite so succinctly, but the logic in both cases was unimpeachable. When there’s a job to be done, this particular England set-up values experience and camaraderie over almost all other traits. And when it comes to 50-over cricket, nobody does it better than Stokes. Will it matter that he officially retired from the format 14 months ago? Almost certainly not. He made way last July because he felt he could not give “100% to the shirt”, and wanted someone else to make an unarguable case in his absence. And yet, England have played just 11 ODIs in that time, nine of them overseas, at least six of which were grossly overshadowed by the T20 zeitgeist – England’s World Cup-winning hangover in Australia last November, and the competing attractions of the franchise circuit in Bangladesh the following March. As a consequence, Stokes has missed nothing of note. Assuming his body holds up, his mind – as we know from proven experience across all formats – will be keenly attuned to his task.He was hardly the first in-demand cricketer to go freelance, but Trent Boult‘s decision to turn down a New Zealand central contract last year was a notable moment nonetheless. At the age of 34, he remains one of the pre-eminent left-arm seamers in the world, but this will be his first international outing in any format since the T20 World Cup in Australia last November. Since then, the selectors have been resolute in their desire to give chances to those who are willing to commit to the national side – leading to the slightly absurd scenario earlier this year, when a Test match against England took place in his home town of Mount Maunganui, with Boult kicking his heels a few miles down the road. But with the big show approaching, there’s no thought of protocol holding sway any longer. His record across 99 career ODIs is outstanding, 187 wickets at 23.97, but in reaching the final in each of his two previous World Cup campaigns, Boult has racked up 39 wickets in 19 matches at 21.79. And in his infrequent 50-over appearances in the past four years, that average plummets to 16.21. He remains an essential weapon and a key reason to believe another deep World Cup run is within the team’s grasp.

Team news: England bring out the big guns

England’s ODI ambitions feel as though they’ve been frozen in time since July 14, 2019, and so their first-choice XI has a fittingly retro feel, with up to nine World Cup medallists set to take the field together for this opening fixture. That number should include five of the 2019 top six, with only the retired Eoin Morgan guaranteed to make way … for Liam Livingstone in the first instance, although as we all know, Harry Brook is making a phenomenal case for his inclusion (although he has yet to link up with the squad after being added at the last minute). Perhaps the most crucial micro-reunion is due to come at the top of the order where Jason Roy and Bairstow will, niggles permitting, once again be charged with setting the tone in the trailblazing manner that set England apart in the previous World Cup cycle.Roy, perhaps surprisingly, has been England’s ODI mainstay since that epic final at Lord’s, featuring in 32 of their 39 subsequent fixtures, but his form has at times fallen through the floor. Dawid Malan, potentially absent on paternity leave at some stage this week, and feeling the Brook pinch like few others, is itching to make his case as the reserve opener – and given Bairstow felt a shoulder twinge in the final T20I, that chance could yet come sooner rather than later. On the bowling front, Sam Curran is the only guaranteed starter from the post-2019 generation, although Mark Wood may be rested in the short to medium term, meaning Gus Atkinson – in that provisional World Cup squad but yet to be tested across 50 overs – might be in line to begin his fast-tracking as England’s new 90mph option. Moeen might conceivably give way to an extra seamer, given Cardiff’s unfriendly dimensions for offspin.England: (possible) 1 Jason Roy, 2 Jonny Bairstow / Dawid Malan, 3 Joe Root, 4 Ben Stokes, 5 Jos Buttler (capt & wk), 6 Liam Livingstone, 7 Moeen Ali / Brydon Carse, 8 Sam Curran, 9 Chris Woakes, 10 Mark Wood / Gus Atkinson, 11 Adil RashidTrent Boult is back in the New Zealand set-up for first time this year•Getty Images

After a T20 partnership that extended from Southern Brave’s Hundred campaign into the T20I series, Devon Conway and Finn Allen have been separated for the 50-over format, with Allen’s place in the World Cup squad seemingly out of the picture too. Instead Conway will front up alongside Will Young, who has averaged an imposing 49.33 with a strike-rate in excess of 90 in his 15 ODIs since 2019. Williamson is still recovering from a cruciate ligament tear in April, and may not be fit to play in any of the four games. Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips will provide the power in the middle order. On the bowling front, it’s a familiar cast of proven performers, with Boult’s return the stand-out selection. “It’s along the same lines as Stokes [for England],” Latham said. “Having someone of world-class calibre come back into your side is always confidence-boosting.”New Zealand: 1 Will Young, 2 Devon Conway, 3 Daryl Mitchell, 4 Glenn Phillips, 5 Tom Latham (capt & wk), 6 Henry Nicholls, 7 Mitchell Santner, 8 Matt Henry, 9 Tim Southee, 10 Lockie Ferguson, 11 Trent Boult

Pitch and conditions

Cardiff, with its short straight boundaries and deep pockets square of the wicket, offers the usual challenges for bowlers, with back-of-a-length bombs and wide lines for the spinners likely to be the order of the day. The pitch itself is pretty close to the centre of the square and has a bit of live grass on it. The surfaces served up much higher scores in the Blast than in previous years, although those used for the Hundred proved to be fairly turgid. The weather is set to be sweltering.

Stats and trivia

  • Cardiff has hosted 29 ODIs in total, and 15 involving England – most recently in July 2021, when Stokes’ Covid-affected scratch side pulled off a remarkable nine-wicket win over Pakistan.
  • Overall, England have won nine and lost three of their completed matches at Sophia Gardens. Their most recent loss was in the Champions Trophy semi-final, also against Pakistan in 2017.
  • New Zealand have had a mixed time of it at the venue, winning four and losing three of their seven games, all of them in ICC events. Their most recent visit was for a ten-wicket hammering of Sri Lanka at the 2019 World Cup.
  • Stokes’ ODI record seemed to be a done deal until last month. Now, he’s back, and needs 76 more runs to reach 3000 in the format, to go along with his 74 wickets at 42.39.
  • Boult is set to play his 100th ODI, and his first in almost exactly 12 months.

Quotes

“That’s the reality of being in a very strong team. We are a very strong team, and we know that. Competition for places is the best possible thing for us… I’m sure that a lot of the final decisions will, potentially, be made around some of the form that the lads show in this series.”
Ben Stokes acknowledges that England’s “provisional” World Cup 15 is far from finalised“There are a lot of passionate All Blacks supporters in our dressing room so I’m sure that, if the time works, we’ll have it on the TVs at some point.”

Rehan lines up Trent Bridge final after 'special' hometown game for England

Legspinner declares himself available for Leicestershire’s Metro Bank Cup final

Rehan Ahmed cherished a “special feeling” on Tuesday night as he played international cricket in his home town of Nottingham for the first time – and could play at Trent Bridge again later this month after declaring himself available for Leicestershire’s Metro Bank One-Day Cup final against Hampshire.Rehan, the 19-year-old legspinner, made his Test debut in Pakistan last December and won his first white-ball caps in Bangladesh earlier this year, but England’s six-wicket defeat to New Zealand in Nottingham was his first taste of international cricket on home soil.He was inundated with requests for his four complimentary tickets, estimating that he had seen “150” friends and family in the stands at Trent Bridge. And he impressed with both bat and ball, hitting 11 off 7 before taking 2 for 27 from his four overs.”It was a special feeling,” Rehan said. “Obviously playing abroad is great but playing in front of my home crowd is a different feeling. To be fair, in Pakistan we got a couple of big roars as well but when you are playing at home, especially in Nottingham – I know a lot of people here and am from here – it’s special.”Related

He bowled in tandem with Adil Rashid through the middle overs, and admitted that he used to dream of playing alongside his fellow legspinner. “Him and Mo [Moeen Ali] are people we look up to as an Asian community,” Rehan said. “Everyone in England looks up to them, so to play with them is a special feeling.”We talk about bowling quite a bit. He [Rashid] is probably five times the bowler I am: he has four different legspinners, he’s played a long time, has a lot of experience. He was young, played and it didn’t go well for him; then he came back, and became the best bowler. He’s been through a lot.”Rehan is not part of England’s ODI squad to play New Zealand and is due to link back up with Leicestershire later this week. He is available for their four-day fixture against Sussex which starts on Sunday, as they bid for promotion to Division One of the County Championship. He will then join up with England again for a three-match ODI series against Ireland, starting on September 20 at Headingley, but hopes to be involved two days before in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup final.Rehan missed the group stage of the Metro Bank Cup while playing for Southern Brave•Getty Images

Rehan has not featured in the competition this season, instead representing Southern Brave in the Hundred, but is eligible to play in the final. Leicestershire will be without Peter Handscomb, who has returned to Australia, but they announced on Wednesday that he will return to the club next summer and in 2025 after signing a two-year contract.”I’ve not thought far ahead,” Rehan said. “I’ll hopefully play some four-day cricket next week, try to get some overs in. I’d like to [play in the final] if I’m free and get picked. The boys are smacking it without me so I don’t know if they need me…”His 15-year-old brother Farhan has been playing for England Under-19s in a one-day series against Australia this week, and was in the stands at Trent Bridge on Tuesday. “I have been watching,” Rehan said. “They got smacked 4-1: that never happened to us when we were Under-19s.”Rehan himself only turned 19 last month; he missed England’s training session on Monday to take his driving test, with permission from head coach Matthew Mott. He passed “first time, no minors” and said: “It was the Bank Holiday Monday morning in Nottingham, so there was no-one on the road.”

Noor Ahmad returns to Afghanistan ODI squad for Pakistan series

The two teams play three ODIs in Sri Lanka between August 22 and 26

ESPNcricinfo staff06-Aug-2023Teenager Noor Ahmad appears to be in Afghanistan’s Asia Cup and World Cup plans having been called up to play a three-match ODI series against Pakistan. These matches, scheduled for August 22, 24 and 26, will be played in Sri Lanka and are the only ODIs on Afghanistan’s docket before they embark on the two biggest tournaments of the year in September and October.Noor, 18, has only played three ODIs for his country since making his debut in November 2022. He has, however, been one of the brightest talents on the franchise T20 circuit and gained considerable acclaim playing for Gujarat Titans in the IPL this year. The left-arm wristspinner at times out bowled senior pro Rashid Khan to finish with 16 wickets in the tournament.Noor has also been part of the Big Bash League in Australia, the Pakistan Super League and the Hundred in England as well. Although he wasn’t with Afghanistan for their most recent ODIs during the tour of Bangladesh last month, he did play two of the three matches against Sri Lanka in June 2023. Those were chastening experiences, though, both for him and the team. Afghanistan were beaten after going 1-0 up and Noor took just two wickets in 17 overs at an average of 62 and an economy rate of 7.29.ESPNcricinfo LtdA bulk of the squad that made history by winning their first bilateral ODI series against Bangladesh have been retained. Izharulhaq Naveed, Nijat Masood and Zia-ur-Rehman, however, did not make the cut.ACB chief selector Asadullah Khan said: “Our whole concentration is to prepare the team for the upcoming two big events of Asia Cup and the World Cup 2023. This three-match ODI series against Pakistan provides us with a wonderful opportunity to prepare the team for the forthcoming two events.”The preparations for the Pakistan series are progressing well; the players have recently performed well in the Kabul Camp, which has been supervised by ACB’s high performance centre staff. The team will also undergo a week-long conditioning camp prior to the Pakistan series.”Afghanistan and Pakistan have only met each other four times in ODIs, and never in an actual bilateral series. At the end of these three games, Afghanistan have about a week’s gap before the start of the Asia Cup, where their campaign begins against Bangladesh in Lahore on September 3.

CA makes neck guards mandatory for batters despite Smith and Warner's preference

Cricket Australia will make neck guards mandatory for Australia and domestic players from October 1 meaning the likes of Steven Smith and David Warner, among others, will be forced to wear them on their helmets having resisted doing so since their introduction in 2015.Mandatory neck guards are one of a number of changes made to CA’s playing conditions ahead of the 2023-24 season including a change to the automatic six rule for balls that hit the roof at Marvel Stadium in the BBL, with the umpires now to make a discretionary decision on whether the ball was travelling over the boundary. Several other changes were made to speed up play in the Big Bash leagues, including time limits on injury stoppages and streamlining stumping reviews. But the decision to make neck guards mandatory will have the biggest impact on Australia’s men’s players with Smith, Warner and Usman Khawaja among the major names not to use them since their introduction. Players will have to wear neck guards on their helmets when facing fast or medium-paced bowling only. The rule does not apply to facing spinners or for wicketkeepers and close-in fielders.Neck or stem guards were designed in the wake of Phillip Hughes’ death. Warner, who was playing in the game when Hughes was struck, made a very strong written statement in the New South Wales coroner’s inquest into Hughes’ death about why he would not wear neck or stem guards.”I do not and will not wear them,” Warner wrote. “When I turn my head…wearing a StemGuard, it impedes my neck and restricts the movement of my neck when I turn around to face bowlers. I have tried a StemGuard and it digs into my neck. It is uncomfortable and is a distraction.”With safety, the helmets are getting heavier. As a player, it is what you feel comfortable with. I go with being able to see better, and being able to move my neck.”Steven Smith did wear a neck guard briefly in the 2019 Ashes•Getty Images

Smith has also avoided wearing them with the exception of a couple of occasions. He was not wearing one when he was concussed after being hit by Jofra Archer in a Test match at Lord’s in 2019. He spoke about having to wear one on his return from concussion during that series.”I’ve tried them before and I tried them the other day when I was batting [in the nets] and I reckon my heart rate went up about 30 or 40 straight away,” Smith said. “I just feel claustrophobic. I compare it to being stuck in an MRI scan machine.”They’re probably going to become mandatory, so I’m going to have to get used to them. I’m sure the more I wear them, the more I practice with them, my heart rate will come down and everything will be okay.”Smith did wear one in the Old Trafford Test of that series and made 211 and 82 but has avoided using one since with the exception of his three-game stint with Sussex earlier this year as it was mandatory in county cricket under ECB rules – the game was briefly stopped when Smith was told he had to get them added to his helmet. It is not mandatory for overseas players in Test matches in England so he did not wear one during the 2023 Ashes.CA has now introduced similar rules on neck guards to the ECB with umpires to enforce their use in domestic matches, but those standards will apply to Australia’s international players only in all matches both home and away, although international umpires can’t enforce them under ICC rules. Australian players choosing not to wear them will now face CA code of conduct penalties.”Protecting the head and neck is extremely important in our sport,” CA head of cricket operations Peter Roach said. “The neck protector product has come a long way in recent years and the decision to make them mandatory comes off the back of a lot of advice and consultation with a wide range of experts and stakeholders.”A number of players have hit the roof at Marvel Stadium•Getty Images

Changes to stumping reviews

In other changes to the playing conditions, balls hitting the roof at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne are no longer automatically six. The on-field umpires will now make a judgment call on whether the ball was travelling for six and if they decide it was not, it will be a dead ball. This follows several examples where top edges that went straight up into the roof were awarded six runs despite clear evidence that the ball would not have landed beyond the inner circle. Also in the BBL and WBBL, any umpire reviews for a stumping will not include a TV umpire review for caught behind as well. The TV official will only adjudicate on the stumping. Captains will need to use the DRS to query a caught-behind decision and the review must be taken before the TV umpire adjudicates on a stumping. There were also several new conditions added to speed up play. On-field injury assessments, with the exception of concussion assessments, are now limited to one five-minute window. Players needing further treatment will need to leave the field, meaning batters would be forced to retire hurt.CA has also removed the Covid-19 substitute rule from their playing conditions in line with the ICC doing the same.

The Argentinian team's decision to name the new stand at the Marcelo Bielsa Stadium after Messi has been criticised by former manager Juan Manuel Llop. He says this move is "all about marketing" and has questioned why the Inter Miami star was given this honour when he left the club's academy for Barcelona aged 13.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportWHAT LLOP SAID

Llop told Radio 2, via TNT Sports: "My question is this: What did Messi do for Newell's? The world aligns itself with marketing. He's the best player in the world, but the same goes for [Diego] Maradona in the stands. It's all about marketing, about looking good. There are very important people in Newell's history who did a lot of things, making history, winning several championships. I don't agree with those decisions. It's not because they put me in charge."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Messi is arguably the greatest footballer of all time and he did spend five years of his life at Newell's Old Boys' academy. But he made a name for himself at Barcelona and never played for the Argentine side's first-team. Ergo, some may, quite understandably, feel irked by this move.

While some people will quibble with this stand's new name, following months of construction, many are wondering if Messi will extend his stay at Inter Miami – with his current deal expiring at the end of 2025. Messi has been linked with a romantic return to boyhood club Newell's in recent months.

Kerr's calm century sees New Zealand through in tense chase

Marizanne Kapp had earlier rescued South Africa from 125 for 5 with a quick 72 but it went in vain

Vishal Dikshit01-Oct-2023New Zealand 210 for 4 (Kerr 100*, Halliday 37*, Malta 2-41) beat South Africa 209 (Kapp 72, Devine 3-33, Tahuhu 3-43, Kerr 2-43) by six wickets (DLS method)A calm and composed Amelia Kerr took New Zealand over the line with an unbeaten century after they were set a target of 210 in 45 overs, in Durban, on what their captain Sophie Devine called a “tricky surface”. It was a consolation win for New Zealand as hosts South Africa had already won the series by claiming the first two ODIs. But two points took New Zealand to the top half of the Women’s Championship table, where they are now fifth and South Africa second, behind India.Even though South Africa lost a fired-up Marizanne Kapp after she had bowled just three overs in the chase – her heart rate spiked up and she left the field as a precaution. CSA had later said she was “doing well and resting in the changeroom” – they will also rue the fielding lapses, dropped catches and missed run-out chances that might have changed the result. New Zealand’s batters, led by Kerr’s fourth ODI century, cashed in on the slip-ups and got home with ten balls to spare. After opting to bowl, New Zealand had the hosts in a spot of bother when their quick bowlers Hannah Rowe, Lea Tahuhu and Devine combined to reduce South Africa to 43 for 3 in the 12th over. When it looked like in-form captain Laura Wolvaardt and Kapp were going to keep them steady, Devine sent Wolvaardt back for a 54-ball 24 with a drag-on while playing her trademark drive. From there, Kapp not only salvaged the innings but pushed along at a brisk pace even though wickets fell around her.She was mainly assisted by Chloe Tryon, playing her 100th ODI, in a fifth-wicket stand of 58 and then by Sinola Jafta for a partnership of 41 for the seventh wicket. Once Jafta was caught behind off Tahuhu, Kapp also edged behind, for 72 off 73 off Kerr, with the score on 188. South Africa were soon bowled out for 209 in 44.3 overs.Morning showers had turned this into a 48-over game at the start, a further interruption in the middle reduced it to 45 overs a side and since the hosts were all out, New Zealand had to chase 210 and not a revised target.South Africa started their defence in strong fashion when Suzie Bates, playing her 300th international game, was caught at midwicket by a diving Tazmin Brits off Masabata Klaas for 9. The ease with which Kerr and Devine then put on 64 for the second wicket, taking them past 100 in the process, made it look like the visitors would stroll to the target. But Nonkululeko Mlaba’s double-strike and Maddy Green’s duck added a twist. Devine and Green were both victims of misfortune: the New Zealand captain tried to push a seemingly innocuous ball to the covers, but it kept low and rolled onto her stumps. In the next over, Green danced down the track and went for a drive, she missed it as did Jafta but the ball bounced off the wicketkeeper’s gloves and hit the stumps. Georgia Plimmer’s cut, away from the body, offered a simple catch to point off Mlaba. It had New Zealand tightly placed 127 for 4, having lost 3 for 21 in the previous 49 balls. The wickets added to a boundary drought that lasted over 12 overs, but Brooke Halliday broke the shackles in the 31st over. The fifth-wicket stand saw off a tense phase with Kerr surviving a close lbw shout, off Tryon, and Halliday’s chip down the ground falling just short of mid-off in the same over. Halliday soon survived a run-out chance as well, thanks to a full-length dive. She got another life when Klaas put down a sitter at midwicket in the 41st over. By now, Kerr had reached a solid 87 with the help of 11 fours, most of them coming behind square and through the covers, and she, with Halliday, had ensured the asking rate never crossed six an over for most of their partnership. And when it did, Halliday smacked Klaas for three fours in an over before Kerr got to 99 with a four next over and tapped the ball towards point to pinch the single that completed her match-winning century along with the game.
