Morgan, Knight and Goswami included in MCC World Cricket Committee

Jhulan Goswami, Heather Knight and Eoin Morgan have become the latest members of the MCC’s world cricket committee ahead of the body’s meeting at Lord’s on Monday and Tuesday. Alastair Cook, though, has stepped down from the committee “to concentrate on the final years of his glittering playing career”, leaving the committee with 14 members.”We are thrilled to welcome Jhulan, Heather and Eoin to the World Cricket committee. These are three players who have excelled at the very top of the international game and their knowledge of how the elite level of cricket works will be an advantage to the committee,” Mike Gatting, the committee’s chair, said in a statement.

The committee

Mike Gatting (chair), Jamie Cox, Suzie Bates, Clare Connor, Kumar Dharmasena, Sourav Ganguly, Jhulan Goswami, Heather Knight, Justin Langer, Eoin Morgan, Ramiz Raja, Kumar Sangakkara, Graeme Smith, Ricky Skerritt

“It is also important that we are growing the female representation on the committee with the growth that women’s cricket has enjoyed in recent years. Jhulan and Heather join Clare Connor and Suzie Bates who can all offer first-hand insight into the women’s game.”The committee, funded entirely by the MCC, conduct research, particularly into technological advances and the biomechanical elements of the game.Knight and Morgan have both led their teams to ODI World Cup glory, and Lord’s, home of the MCC and the world cricket committee, was the venue of their triumphs: Knight led England women to the title in 2017 and Morgan did the same with the England men’s team in 2019. Goswami, India’s captain at various points in her two-decade-long international career, retired at Lord’s last year as the highest wicket-taker in women’s ODIs.

Wayne Madsen run ends as Dawid Malan 81* maintains Yorkshire revival

Haider Ali sparks for Derbyshire but hosts cruise chase for third successive win

Wayne Madsen fell six runs short of becoming the first man in T20 history to score six successive fifties as his Derbyshire side were comfortably beaten by seven wickets by a revitalised Yorkshire in today’s Vitality Blast clash at Headingley.England’s Dawid Malan then starred in the chase with a superb 81 not out off 57 balls, Yorkshire winning with 10 balls to spare.Madsen’s 44 off 26 in the Falcons 166 for 8 batting first means he remains one of seven players worldwide to have scored five fifties in a row in this format. Jos Buttler, Virender Sehwag and David Warner are on the list.Pakistan overseas opener Haider Ali’s belligerent 74 off 47 balls was the feature of Derbyshire’s innings having been inserted, and also his best score for the county in all cricket since arriving in April. But Haider and Madsen falling in quick succession meant the innings lost crucial momentum from 147 for 2 in the 17th over. That paved the way for the Vikings to win their third successive North Group fixture, backing up last week’s successes over Nottinghamshire and Lancashire. After three wickets for Ben Mike, Malan continued his excellent form with a third fifty in a row and could yet expand that aforementioned list of seven over the next week. The left-hander shared 83 inside 10 overs for the first wicket with Adam Lyth, who made 31, and continued on with almost effortless class in hitting nine fours and three sixes. Both teams came into this fixture having had identical seasons – winless in the Championship, having lost their first three games in the Blast before winning their last two last week.Yorkshire started well, with Derbyshire limited to 19 for 1 after four overs, including Mike getting Luis Reece caught scooping. But Haider counterattacked with success and ensured 40 runs came off the next four overs, playing confidently on both sides of the wicket in excellent batting conditions.Tom Wood fell to legspinner Jafer Chohan’s first ball in the ninth over – 59 for 2 – as he was brilliantly caught at a wide short third-man by a diving Will Luxton following a reverse sweep. But that strike only served to bring Madsen to the crease. Both Haider, who reached 50 off 35 balls, and Madsen struck the ball cleanly during an 88-run partnership inside nine overs, though the wind was quickly taken out of Derbyshire’s sails.Madsen drilled David Wiese into the covers to end his shot at history, leaving Derbyshire 147 for 3 in the 17th over, before Haider was smartly caught by Wiese off Mike in the next. Mike also bowled a reverse sweeping Leus du Plooy before another three wickets fell in the last eight balls to give Yorkshire the definite advantage at halfway. And it didn’t take long for the result to become obvious as Lyth and Malan were quickly into their stride. Malan pulled seamer Zak Chappell for six over square leg and dominated the powerplay as 54 came from the first six overs.Unlike Yorkshire, Derbyshire’s bowlers just couldn’t drag things back as they suffered defeat number four of the campaign.Malan pulled his second six off George Scrimshaw’s pace early in the eighth over, a vicious shot over midwicket to take him into the 40s, and by the time he reached 50 off 35 balls in the 11th over, Yorkshire were 103 for 1. Lyth had been bowled slog-sweeping at Wood’s offspin before Will Luxton fell cheaply having miscued a pull at Scrimshaw to square leg, leaving the score at 110 for 2 after 12.Yorkshire’s target was reduced to 42 off the last five overs at 125 for 2, and a couple of lusty blows from Namibia international allrounder Wiese ended Malan’s hopes of a sixth career T20 century but more importantly gave the hosts another two points.Wiese actually fell for an entertaining 30 to Chappell, but it was nothing more than a consolatory wicket at 158 for 3 in the 18th over. That allowed Mike to clinch the win with a straight six off Zaman Khan in the 19th over.

£108m wasted: INEOS must cash in on Man Utd flop who has "disappeared"

Amid what appears certain to end as Manchester United’s worst-ever Premier League campaign, the Red Devils will once again be looking to oversee something of a squad overhaul this summer.

The INEOS regime will likely need to be as ruthless as they were last summer, having notably allowed high profile stars such as Raphael Varane and Anthony Martial to depart following the expiry of their contracts.

Martial

Equally, the Old Trafford hierarchy also opted to cash in on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer favourites, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Scott McTominay, while a raft of academy graduates were also shown the door, namely Willy Kambwala, Alvaro Fernandez and Hannibal Mejbri.

With new boss Ruben Amorim having already hinted that the club will need to sell before buying this summer, it could be a repeat scenario this time around, with the futures of a number of first-team assets currently up in the air.

If recent reports are anything to go by, there could well be a mass exodus from the Theatre of Dreams by the time next season rolls around…

Man Utd's mass summer exodus

As the player has hinted at himself this week, Christian Eriksen is likely to be moving on to pastures new following the expiry of his contract at the end of June, with the Danish playmaker having initially signed on a free transfer back in 2022.

The 33-year-old – as reported by Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst – is likely to be followed by fellow Scandinavian star, Victor Lindelof, with the long-serving Swede also unlikely to be handed a new deal.

Further experienced exits could lie in store for one-time academy graduates, Jonny Evans and Tom Heaton, with both men in line for retirement once their own contracts are up this summer.

As Luckhurst also alluded to, fellow veteran Casemiro is likely to be made available for transfer, despite the Brazilian having recently admitted that he would be willing to see out the remainder of his deal, which expires in 2026.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and co are also likely to try and cash in on both Marcus Rashford and Antony, with the pair having joined Aston Villa and Real Betis, respectively, in January.

In the case of the Brazilian, there was no clause included as part of the move to Spain, although Villa do have a £40m option to buy as part of their temporary acquisition of Rashford.

Another man who could also be set for a permanent departure within the Premier League is Jadon Sancho, albeit with the Englishman’s future at Chelsea having been brought into fresh doubt of late.

Man Utd's total cost of signing Jadon Sancho

It is very on-brand for a chaotic club like United that even a seemingly routine obligation-to-buy clause has become rather complicated, with it looking as if the Stamford Bridge side could attempt to back out of the permanent signing of Sancho.

As reported by The Athletic’s David Ornstein, the Blues could avoid paying £25m for the addition of the 25-year-old by instead paying the Red Devils a £5m penalty fee, in order to send the winger back to Old Trafford.

That could potentially see the former Borussia Dortmund man return to Manchester this summer, leaving INEOS with the potential task of trying to find a suitable buyer for him, ahead of next term.

It would be no surprise if Chelsea do opt not to sign the wideman permanently, not least considering his meagre return of just two goals and six assists in 28 games for the west Londoners to date.

After a bright start, which included three assists in his first three Premier League games under Enzo Maresca, the one-time Manchester City youth star has failed to maintain that momentum, with Chelsea hero John Obi Mikel stating that he has simply “disappeared” of late:

Those woes reflect Sancho’s dismal time back at United thus far, with the 2021 arrival having contributed just 18 goals and assists in 83 games to date – a return bettered by Dan James, for instance, who chalked up 18 goal involvements from just 74 appearances.

Described by Solskjaer as “a forward player in the best traditions of Manchester United” upon his £73m switch from Germany, the England international has certainly failed to live up to that price tag, having proven a costly mistake instead.

Not only have the club had to fork out that initial fee, but they have also coughed up over £35m in wages since then, as per Capology, representing a total cost of around £108m in all.

The idea of then being burdened with him again next season, provided Chelsea wiggle out of a move, would be a real concern for the United hierarchy, with INEOS needing to ensure that they finally cash in on Sancho this summer – one way, or another.

England U21s boss Lee Carsley has unveiled his 23-player roster for the upcoming UEFA European Under-21 Championship, where the Young Lions will attempt to retain their continental crown. Two players from the triumphant 2023 squad, defender Charlie Cresswell and forward Harvey Elliott, have once again been included.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

One of the most notable names in Carsley’s squad is Bellingham. However, there are concerns that his participation could be in jeopardy, with Borussia Dortmund closing in on a deal to sign the 19-year-old. It has been widely reported that a £25 million ($34m) transfer is nearing completion, especially after he reportedly met with Dortmund’s sporting director Sebastian Kehl in Ibiza last week. While a last-minute withdrawal remains possible if the move materialises quickly, the teenager is currently preparing to represent his country in Slovakia.

The biggest blow to Carsley’s plans has come via Chelsea’s intervention. The club has declined to release Delap, prioritising his availability for the Club World Cup, which the Blues are preparing for this month. Delap isn’t the only high-profile absentee. Jamie Gittens of Dortmund, and also a target for Chelsea during this transfer window, is missing from the group, as are Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite and Manchester City’s versatile full-back Rico Lewis.

Tottenham and Levy in talks to sign "quick" 29 y/o for free ahead of Bayern

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly in talks to sign a “very quick” defender in free transfer ahead of Bayern Munich.

Levy eyeing new managers and players for Tottenham ahead of summer

It could be a busy few months behind the scenes in north London for Daniel Levy and co, with manager Ange Postecoglou seemingly under big pressure.

Spurs and Postecoglou have lost 19 games in all competitions this season, with the latest defeat coming at Fulham prior to the international break.

TottenhamHotspur manager Ange Postecoglou reacts after the match

That resulted in a number of managers being linked with replacing Postecoglou at Tottenham, including Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola, Fulham manager Marco Silva and ex-Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Talking to Sky Sports recently, the USA manager said about a return to Tottenham: “Look, when I left the club I always remember one interview I said I would like one day to come back to Tottenham and that is of course.

“I am in the USA, I am not going to no, I’m not going to talk about that, but what I said then still after six years or five years, I still feel in my heart that, yes, I would like one day to come back. We see the timing, like Daniel said.”

In the transfer market, Tottenham are also starting to make early moves ahead of the summer, with an opening bid worth £38m submitted by Spurs to sign Sunderland midfielder Chris Rigg.

At the back, Tottenham have seemingly started discussions over a cheaper move to sign an international defender, amid concerns Cristian Romero is interested in a move to Real Madrid.

Tottenham make contact to sign Jonathan Tah for free

According to a report from Spain, Tottenham have been in contact over a move to sign Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah. The Germany international is out of contract with Leverkusen at the end of the season and has decided to leave the Bundesliga champions in the summer.

Spurs ‘have already initiated contacts to learn about the terms of his potential transfer’, as have Liverpool, whereas Bayern Munich are also eyeing a move for the 29-year-old.

Tah has been with Leverkusen since 2015 and looks set to depart after 10 years. During that time, the centre-back has made close to 400 appearances, scored 16 goals and won his first two major honours with Leverkusen last season.

He’s been linked with Chelsea and West Ham in the past and was previously hailed by former Leverkusen boss Gerardo Seoane, who said: “Jonathan has a great history here. He’s an international player. He’s ambitious. He is held in high regard by his teammates. We expect him to take the next step personality-wise.

Elsewhere, former Germany manager Joachim Low praised Tah’s physicality and speed, saying: “He’s a young player with a lot of potential. He’s physically strong and very quick. Everything is possible.”

Liverpool could rue selling "relentless" ace who may be better than Kerkez

Liverpool are heading toward a critical juncture.

Arne Slot’s side are way ahead at the top of the Premier League having also reached the Carabao Cup final. A meeting with Newcastle United at Wembley looms large.

But FSG know their Dutch head coach’s lightning-fast start to life in Jurgen Klopp’s seat will only be preserved through calculated investment this summer.

There’s still hope Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah will extend their deals, though there’s a sense of resignation that Trent Alexander-Arnold may have been tempted by Real Madrid.

While each of these superstars’ positions will need to be filled if they leave, Liverpool also have several other priorities, with Darwin Nunez likely to be sold this summer and a high-class forward needed in his stead.

He’s not the only one, though, with the left side of defence also in desperate need of renovation. Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez has been picked as the man for the job, it seems.

Liverpool's interest in Milos Kerkez

Anfield’s left-back berth has required very little attention over the past eight years, with Andy Robertson ruling supreme and Kostas Tsimikas joining from Olympiakos in 2020 to add depth.

Andy Robertson in action for Liverpool

However, neither is performing to the highest standard in Slot’s system. Robertson turned 31 this week and is suffering after so many full-throttle years under Klopp’s wing.

Kerkez, 21, is the full package and the perfect long-term solution.

With the Daily Mail reporting Liverpool’s interest is already in the advanced stage, there’s plenty to get excited about. The Hungarian’s pace and energy down the left is perfect for Slot’s high-energy and technically-shaped team.

Indeed, he’s scored two goals and provided five assists across 28 Premier League matches this term, as per Sofascore, also completing 81% of his passes and averaging 4.7 ball recoveries per game.

Milos Kerkez for Bournemouth

All this said, Liverpool run the risk of losing Trent this summer and will then need to target full-backs on either side to bring Slot’s vision to fruition.

It’s a shame the perfect rising defender has already been offloaded, for he is thriving in England’s top flight this year and is maybe even outperforming Kerkez.

Liverpool may regret selling "relentless" PL star

Through the genius of Alexander-Arnold, Liverpool fans have been reminded of the joy in witnessing one of your own emerge from the academy and make a marked impact over a number of years.

Liverpool'sTrentAlexander-Arnoldapplauds fans after the match

Oftentimes, promising prospects fall by the wayside at their first club, but many go on to forge impressive careers. Neco Williams is one such player, having found his feet and then some at Nottingham Forest.

Hindsight always portrays a different picture, and few – if any – of a Liverpool persuasion felt the £17m fee that FSG claimed when Forest purchased full-back Williams was anything other than a bona fide success.

And, in fairness, it still is, though Nuno Espirito Santo has pulled every ounce of ability from this product of the Kirkby talent factory, a core part of the high-flying Tricky Trees’ campaign.

Williams is reaching the end of his second season at the City Ground, and having played 18 times from the outset last year, he’s already equalled that number this season with two months still to be played.

Nuno hailed his team’s “ruthless” ability in front of goal during January’s 7-0 demolition of Brighton, Williams among the scorers. He’s complete in his approach, with such performances surely not unworthy of a spot in Slot’s squad.

The current term may not convey the most awe-inspiring of playmaking metrics but it’s important to remember Williams is moonlighting on the wrong side of the pitch. Even so, the right-footer has excelled as his team defy expectation to challenge for a place in next season’s Champions League, something they are firmly on course for as we enter the business end.

In spite of this, the Welshman has still managed to showcase his athleticism and ball-carrying approach, all the while maintaining a steely defensive game. As per Sofascore, he’s won a whopping 60% of his duels this season, battling against right wingers such as Salah.

It’s perhaps also worth noting Williams has averaged a dribble every two Premier League matches this season, whereas Kerkez, despite what you may think, records 0.6 dribbles per top-flight fixture in 2024/25.

Statistics only tell so much of a story. Forest have held the least possession of any side in the Premier League, and yet are flying high at the top. This is why Williams’ ball-carrying and playmaking numbers are down, but even so, you can see that he performs well in the conditions provided.

Could it be that Williams is a superior defender with an attacking game that doesn’t always get highlighted, due to the way in which Forest set up?

Neco Williams and Chris Wood

It must be said, Klopp once commented on Williams’ “incredible” quality in attack when he played for Liverpool, and with six assists from only 33 senior appearances with the Reds, this is hardly baseless.

He was also praised for his “relentless” running by Liverpool writer Leanne Prescott, further strengthening the claim he’d be fit for purpose in Slot’s framework.

neco-williams-liverpool-transfer-opinion

Bringing it back to Trent, FSG may find they have parted with their next version of the Three Lions star, an exciting and dynamic wide defender who distinctively can play across both flanks.

If Alexander-Arnold does leave this summer, Liverpool are going to need to sign a new player to provide competition for Conor Bradley. It’s just a shame that this could have been prevented, had Williams’ potential been properly recognised, and a decision on his sale withheld.
