Saved by Merino: Arteta must bin Arsenal flop after 3/10 disasterclass

Arsenal claimed three vital points in the Premier League this afternoon, beating Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Leicester City side 2-0 at the King Power Stadium.

However, Mikel Arteta’s men didn’t have it all their own way throughout the contest, having to wait until the 81st minute after substitute Mikel Merino broke the deadlock.

The Spanish midfielder, who came on to feature as a central striker, scored his second of the game just minutes later, ghosting in at the far post to tap home from Leandro Trossard’s cross.

His goals ensured that the Gunners move within four points of leaders Liverpool ahead of their clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers, piling the pressure on Arne Slot’s side to get a result.

However, despite the victory, numerous first-team players failed to impress, potentially putting their starting roles at risk ahead of their next clash against West Ham United.

Arsenal’s poor performers against Leicester

Although he managed to get an assist for Merino’s second goal, winger Trossard looked largely ineffective throughout the contest with the Foxes, unable to take full advantage of the opportunity handed his way due to the injury crisis.

The Belgian was caught offside twice and missed one big chance in the final third, unable to put the Gunners ahead before the double from the substitute.

Midfielder Martin Odegaard has for so long been the player to get Arteta’s side out of trouble, starring with his phenomenal ball-playing ability, often teeing up players in the final third.

However, the Norwegian was largely wasteful in today’s triumph, losing possession 14 times, and only managing one effort on goal, with this afternoon certainly one to forget for the captain.

Despite the lack of impact by the aforementioned duo, one other player looked poor throughout in the East Midlands, undoubtedly leading to questions about his future at the club.

The Arsenal player who dropped a 3/10 against Leicester

Given the recent injuries to the likes of Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz in the final third, the trip to face Leicester presented an opportunity for winger Raheem Sterling to get a rare start for the Gunners.

The Englishman joined the club on loan from Chelsea in the summer but has since been restricted to cup action and minutes from the substitutes bench.

However, he started for Arteta’s side this afternoon but did himself no favours whatsoever, failing to impress – potentially ending his career at the top level of the English game.

The 30-year-old only featured for 69 minutes before being replaced by eventual match-winner Merino, only notching a total of 36 touches during his time on the pitch.

Like Odegaard, he was wasteful, losing the ball 13 times and only achieving a pass accuracy rate of 79%, highlighting why Arteta decided to withdraw him from the contest.

Sterling also failed to complete any of his three attempted dribbles, registering just one shot, looking way below the level of a player who’s featured at the top level for the majority of his career.

As a result of his showing, he was handed a measly 3/10 match rating by Football London’s Tom Cannon, the lowest of any player in the squad, showcasing his lack of impact.

Given his disappointing showing, the boss has been left with no choice but to leave him out of future starting lineups, evidently not good enough to cut it for a side pushing for a league title.

With his loan deal set to expire at the end of the season, supporters will be glad to see the back of Sterling after his lack of impact, with his showing demonstrating the need for added investment this summer.

Smith's career-best T20 knock puts Sixers in hunt for top spot

His unbeaten 155-run stand with Henriques set up a convincing 125-run win

Andrew McGlashan21-Jan-2023Sydney Sixers 187 for 2 in 19 overs (Smith 125*, Henriques 45*, Sandhu 2-42) beat Sydney Thunder 62 (Warner 16, O’Keefe 4-10, Abbott 3-11) by 125 runsThe BBL had already enjoyed a resurgent season, but Steven Smith produced one of its grandest performances in front of a packed SCG to keep Sydney Sixers in the hunt for the top spot with a crushing 125-run victory in the local derby against Sydney Thunder.Smith followed his 56-ball hundred against Adelaide Strikers by matching that figure to the delight of the majority of the 38,757-strong crowd, after a slightly delayed start bringing the game down to a 19-over contest with rain briefly threatening to spoil the occasion, despite having battled back spasms earlier in the day.Smith finished on a career-best 125* from 66 balls, peppered with nine sixes, as cross-town rivals Thunder had no answer as he dominated an unbeaten second-wicket of 155 with captain Moises Henriques. He became the second player in the BBL to score back-to-back hundreds after Ben McDermott. However, the overall contest peaked with Smith’s innings. The contrast with David Warner was stark. He took 17 balls to find the boundary as Thunder never threatened to make any sort of impression on the target.Sensational SmithAfter Sixers opted to bat, Smith was quickly into his stride, carving his second ball for four, playing a superb back-foot drive against Chris Green in the second over then sweeping Daniel Sams into the stands for his first six.The home side were briefly set back when Gurinder Sandhu struck twice in the fourth over – Josh Philippe dragging on and Kurtis Patterson top-edging three balls after being dropped – but Smith was in the zone. There was a period of consolidation where three overs from the fifth to the seventh did not produce a boundary before Smith deposited Joel Davies straight down the ground. That marked a gear change for Smith who went to fifty from 31 balls in an over where he again put Sams into the stands.Smith was given a life on 51 when Usman Qadir spilled a return catch having already taken a painful blow on the hand. Smith sped into the 90s with two sixes in three balls off Sandhu in the 15th over before launching Qadir over wide long-on, his second fifty taking just 25 deliveries. In the space of three innings he had equaled the most sixes for the season.Smith’s 125* was the highest T20 innings at the SCG, overtaking Shane Watson’s 124 against India in 2016 and his performances have shone a light on his omission from Australia’s T20 side, even if there were logical reasons behind it.Henriques’ painful supporting roleThe Sixers’ captain had one of the best seats in the house, although he copped a few blows for his efforts. He struggled somewhat early on and was 15 off 19 balls before sending Qadir over long-on, although by and large was able to leave the heavy lifting to Smith. In the 14th over he was struck a painful blow on the chin when a throw from the outfield bounced on the edge of the pitch and missed his helmet. In the penultimate over he was then in the firing line from Smith himself when a fiercely struck drive off Sams hammered in his thigh at the non-strikers’ end.In the end, the third-wicket stand ended as Sixers’ second-highest in the BBL and the highest partnership for that wicket in the tournament’s history.Warner struggles as Thunder slideWarner’s return to the BBL, after a much longer gap than Smith’s, has brought nowhere near the same rewards for Thunder. There wasn’t a lot he could do about the yorker he got from Riley Meredith against Hobart Hurricanes, and he played a useful hand against Melbourne Renegades, but this was a painful innings. He didn’t often have much of the strike – facing just 23 balls by the time he fell in the tenth over – but couldn’t get his innings going and the frustration was clear. Eventually, he spooned a catch into the leg side against the wily Steve O’Keefe as Thunder’s chase fell in a heap. Warner’s final tally was the third slowest double-figure innings of his T20 career.Thunder have endured some significant batting struggles this season, although with one game remaining can still make the finals.Lyon sits out againThis is a watching brief at the moment, not quite a cause for major concern. For the second consecutive match, Nathan Lyon was kept on the sidelines as medical staff took a precautionary view of a knee niggle, described as a lateral meniscus irritation. He will be assessed again ahead of Sixers’ final regular-season match against Hobart Hurricanes on Monday, but there won’t be any risks taken with the proximity of the India tour – plus the fact that Sixers are well-stocked for spinners, at least at the moment. They will have to use their bench strength when both Lyon and Todd Murphy, who bowled very tidily in this game, have departed for India. Smith will have gone, too, by then but has certainly left his mark on this year’s tournament.

100% duels won: 9/10 Chelsea ace is rapidly becoming more vital than Palmer

Chelsea have endured somewhat of a disappointing run in recent weeks, losing three games in a row across all competitions, subsequently having an impact on their Premier League standing.

However, Enzo Maresca managed to end their poor run of form last night, claiming a 4-0 win over bottom side Southampton at Stamford Bridge, a victory that was just their third league win of 2025.

Such a convincing display will add needed confidence to the first-team squad, also bolstering their chances of claiming a Champions League place by the end of the season.

However, despite the huge scoreline, multiple players struggled to produce one of their best performances, potentially being punished by higher-quality opposition on another day.

One player in particular was wasteful in West London during the triumph, extending his own disappointing run within the final third over the last few weeks.

Cole Palmer’s form for Chelsea in 2025

Cole Palmer has been the leading talisman in front of goal for Chelsea since his move from Manchester City in 2023, as seen by his mammoth tally of goal contributions.

The England international has registered 60 combined goals and assists in his 75 appearances for the Blues, but has struggled to maintain his performance levels over the last couple of weeks.

Cole Palmer for Chelsea

Palmer has failed to register a goal contribution in any of the last six games across all competitions, scoring just twice since the turn of the year, showcasing his decline in form.

His showing against the Saints was a wasteful one, notching seven efforts on goal, including three on target, but was unable to find the back of the net – something which he hasn’t usually struggled with in West London.

Such a spell will come as a surprise to the fanbase given his impact over the last 18 months, with Palmer needing to dig deep between now and the end of May to recapture his impressive form.

However, it has allowed for one player to potentially overtake the Englishman in terms of importance to Maresca, with one player thriving since his return to the side.

The Chelsea player who’s becoming more important than Palmer

During the early stages of the 2024/25 season, midfielder Enzo Fernández struggled to cement his place in Maresca’s starting eleven, with Moises Caicedo and Roméo Lavia ahead of him in the pecking order.

Enzo Fernandez for Chelsea

However, he’s emerged as a key member of the first team squad in recent weeks, repaying the faith shown in him by the Italian – impressing beyond anyone’s imagination.

Since the turn of the year, the Argentine may only have registered a single goal, but he has starred with his underlying stats, with his showing against Southampton up there with one of his best in recent times.

Fernandez started at the base of the side alongside Caicedo, featuring for 89 minutes at the Bridge, arguably one of the best performers within the side last night.

The 24-year-old completed 88% of the passes he attempted, whilst also winning 100% of the duels he entered – offering a real commanding presence in the midfield department.

Enzo also created six chances, completing 100% of dribbles and making seven recoveries – producing a sensational all-round box-to-box performance for the Blues.

As a result of his display, the former Benfica ace was handed a 9/10 match rating by Football London journalist Bobby Vincent, further demonstrating how impressive he was in the convincing victory.

Palmer has no doubt been crucial to the side over the last couple of months, with the former City star expected to have a drop-off after such a stellar start to life in West London.

However, Fernandez has since stepped up to the plate, producing multiple impressive showings at the heart of the side, taking responsibility with Maresca reaping the rewards as a result of the trust shown in him.

Chelsea's £100m star in the making has very quickly become a liability

He’s been really disappointing recently for Enzo Maresca’s side.

'Rock bottom' – 'Abject' Man Utd warned of becoming new Ferrari as Ruben Amorim is sent brutal message over Red Devils job after Europa League final defeat

Former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan delivers a scathing assessment of United, predicting a dismal season ahead for Ruben Amorim next year.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

United lost the Europa League final to Tottenham on Wednesday night, failing to secure Champions League football or a trophy. This defeat has led to widespread criticism of the club's performance and direction, with concerns raised about their financial situation and ability to compete at the highest level. The result also means a significant financial blow for the Red Devils, impacting their summer transfer plans.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Europa League defeat caps off another disappointing season for United, extending their trophy drought and highlighting deeper issues within the club. Years of poor recruitment, mismanagement and a lack of clear direction have eroded the club's standing in the football world. The failure to qualify for the Champions League further exacerbates these problems, hindering their ability to attract top talent and generate crucial revenue needed to comply with Profit and Sustainability Regulations (PSR).

  • WHAT JORDAN SAID

Speaking on talkSPORT, Former Crystal Palace owner Jordan said: "We're seeing an erosion and if it keeps going for another ten years, you're going to see the analogy that I made of Manchester City being Red Bull and Manchester United being Ferrari, being eroded because the next generation of fans are light upon winners and United are not winners.

"I think we just saw United hit the bottom. You cannot make a case for Manchester United to be finishing 16th in the Premier League, two places above the relegation spot and putting out a performance. United were abject and they've lost the final in such an abject manner with so much riding on it, so many opportunities to change the direction of travel.

"I think you've just witnessed the United beast hit the bottom and then that's when you start to bounce and I think you'll see a bounce. Now, what that bounce looks like, it might mean that United finish tenth next season and not 17th."

    WHAT NEXT FOR MAN UTD?

United face a crucial summer as they look to rebuild their squad and address the issues that have plagued them in recent years. Amorim will be tasked with making significant changes, potentially offloading underperforming players and bringing in new talent. The club will need to be more strategic in their transfer dealings and find solutions to comply with PSR. While Jordan predicts a "bounce" after hitting rock bottom, the scale of that improvement remains to be seen, with a top-half finish potentially representing a significant improvement.

Tottenham approve exit for "excellent" attacker as Levy awaits bidding war

Tottenham Hotspur have decided to sanction an exit this summer, with chairman Daniel Levy and co anticipating a bidding war for the player’s services.

Tottenham are also open to selling Richarlison this summer, following a season ravaged by injury, with the Brazilian failing to make his mark under Postecoglou as a result. Everton are also rumoured to be weighing up a swoop for their former striker this summer, and Levy is prepared to sell Richarlison for around £40 million (GiveMeSport).

Even Spurs captain Son Heung-min has been linked with an exit at the end of this season, despite the club recently electing to extend the winger’s deal by an additional 12 months, so Postecoglou’s side could look very different by the start of 2025/2026.

Amid his excellent loan spell at Leeds United, questions will be asked about the future of winger Manor Solomon.

The Israeli international joined Tottenham on a free transfer in 2023, but his debut campaign at N17 was overshadowed by long-term injuries. Levy gave the green-light for Solomon to join Leeds on a temporary deal, and he hasn’t looked back since.

The 25-year-old has scored seven goals and assisted eight more in 30 total appearances under Daniel Farke, prompting reports that they could look to extend his stay at Elland Road.

Tottenham set to green-light Manor Solomon transfer as bidding war looms

As per GiveMeSport, Leeds won’t be the only contenders for his services. Indeed, it is claimed Everton and Southampton are also expressing an interest in the winger, with Levy anticipating a bidding war for Solomon’s signature at Tottenham. His price tag is currently set at £15 million, but Spurs are confident they could demand even more, especially considering the growing clamour for Solomon’s services this summer.

Tottenham are prepared to sanction the ex-Fulham star’s exit as a result, with the north Londoners set to make a pure profit off his potential sale as well.

“I know Manor Solomon from the Premier League. From Fulham, Tottenham, and now he has moved to Leeds,” said Man City superstar Kevin De Bruyne. “He has the qualities to play at this level. He is an excellent player.”

Meanwhile, ex-Leeds boss Neil Redfearn is convinced he’s far beyond English second tier level: “He’s got a quality that is better than this level, you can obviously see that.”

Mourinho has denied having any contact with the Portuguese Football Federation, despite multiple reports linking him to the national team job. The 62-year-old's first season in Istanbul has been full of controversy, and his future with the Turkish club remains uncertain. While Mourinho denied holding talks to replace Roberto Martínez, he has not ruled out the possibility of staying at Fenerbahce beyond the summer.

Mourinho also revealed that he rejected a team back in January. He guided Fenerbahce to a second-place finish in the 2024–25 Turkish Super Lig, but a crucial loss to Galatasaray has sparked questions about his long-term commitment. A derby defeat to Besiktas only added to the pressure, especially with just one year left on his contract.

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaching, some Portugal fans are dreaming of seeing Mourinho and Cristiano Ronaldo team up again to lead Portugal to glory. However, reports in the UK suggest that Leeds United and Rangers are keeping an eye on the 'Special One', while Saudi giants Al Hilal, longtime admirers of Mourinho, are also said to be monitoring the situation closely.

Last summer, Mourinho reportedly held talks with Al Qadsiah, shortly after the club was promoted to the Saudi Pro League. According to reports, he attended the Sync Summit in Al Khobar, where he met with Aramco CEO Amin Nasser, Qadsiah board member Faisal Alnughaimish, and project head Nabil Aljama. Despite the high-level meetings, no agreement was reached.

WHAT JOSE MOURINHO SAID

Mourinho said: "Yes, I can deny that I had any meeting with the Portuguese Football Federation. I am a loyal person.

"The only time I had direct contact with a club I informed Fenerbahce. It wasn't now, it was in January. I had a meeting with the [unnamed] club. I didn't accept the offer. But I informed my club even before the meeting.

Regarding his future, Mourinho made it clear that any decision would be handled internally.

He added: "I am not speaking about next season. I will speak internally, not to the media. If there is something, out of respect to the president and the board, I will not bring it into the public."

Celtic may sell £10m+ star to sign "standout" with Hoops confident of deal

Celtic find themselves in the hunt for another domestic clean sweep under Brendan Rodgers, but the club already have one eye on what will be a potentially busy summer that could see movement in both directions.

Celtic's hunger for silverware won't slow summer transfer plans

Planting their flag in the sand, Celtic are firmly in front of everyone else in the Scottish Premiership table and require three more wins to mathematically secure a fourth successive league title following last weekend’s events.

While the Bhoys dismantled St Mirren in Paisley, struggling Rangers lost out at home to Motherwell, widening the gap at the summit to 16 points.

The Ghana international is set to be a free agent at the end of the season and may be a viable competitor to push Kieran Tierney, who will arrive on a pre-contract from Arsenal.

Greg Taylor hasn’t renewed terms at Parkhead and would be the obvious asset to make way. However, there is still plenty of on-field work to be done before addressing the left-hand side of defence.

Nonetheless, the situation in question does serve as a reminder that squad cycles do come to an end at some point. With that in mind, Celtic could also be set for alterations in the engine room.

Celtic could sign Lennon Miller if Reo Hatate departs Parkhead

According to The Daily Record, Celtic are confident they will strike a deal for Motherwell midfielder Lennon Miller and believe the off-season may be the perfect time to strike for the talent, who is one of Scotland’s hottest properties on the market.

The outlet claim that Reo Hatate may be the most likely departure to create room for the 18-year-old to claim a spot in the Hoops’ starting line-up. Having spent three and a half years in Glasgow, the Suzuka-born man could depart for a new challenge once the campaign comes to a close.

Last summer, Celtic knocked back a £10 million bid for the Japan international from France, and any exit would likely see a sum surpassing that mark make its way into the Parkhead coffers.

Labelled a “standout” by Barry Ferguson, Miller is three off the 70-appearance mark for the Steelmen despite only turning 18 last August. The Scotland Under-21 international may also be a contender to earn senior honours for his country ahead of their Nations League playoff double-header against Greece later in the month.

Celtic always have one eye on the future, and they won’t want to miss out on a rising star who is gaining considerable recognition for his all-action displays in the engine room.
