"Sensational" £59m Man Utd star now agrees personal terms to join new club

Manchester United have received a huge offer for a “sensational” player, who has now agreed personal terms over a deal, according to a report.

Amorim looking to reshape his squad

Ruben Amorim is looking to put his own stamp on the Man United squad, which means there could be a number of departures in the January transfer window, with three forwards potentially set for exits.

Marcus Rashford has made it clear that he wants to leave his boyhood club, with Barcelona among the clubs interested in the Englishman, who has found game time hard to come by since Amorim’s arrival.

The Red Devils are also open to letting Antony leave this month should they receive a suitable offer, with the Brazilian winger flattering to deceive ever since arriving from Ajax.

Alejandro Garnacho has featured regularly in the Premier League this season, but there is now major doubt over the winger’s future at Old Trafford, with Chelsea becoming the latest club to hold talks over a deal.

There is also interest from Italy, with reports from earlier this week detailing that Napoli are ready to increase their offer for the 20-year-old, who is valued at £59m by United.

According to a new report from Tuttosport (via Sport Witness), the deal is now advancing, with Napoli submitting a €55m (£46m) offer for Garnacho, having generated the funds for a deal by selling Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to Paris Saint-Germain.

Manchester United's AlejandroGarnachoapplauds fans

The Argentina international is said to have agreed contract terms with the Serie A side, indicating that he is keen on the move, but an improved bid may need to be submitted to get a deal over the line.

Man United are maintaining a €70m (£59m) asking price for the youngster, so the two clubs are still some way apart.

Man Utd should sell Garnacho

It is always a shame to see a player who has progressed through the youth ranks move on to pastures new, but if Garnacho wants to leave, Amorim shouldn’t stand in his way.

The Argentinian has shown some promising signs in a United shirt, receiving praise for his “sensational” performance against Aston Villa from reporter Michael Plant just over a year ago.

The left-winger has scored three Premier League goals this season, but he has been unable to cement his place in the starting XI, often being utilised as a substitute, having failed to really kick on since last season.

As such, Man United should look to cash in on Garnacho this month, and raising £59m from his sale would potentially allow them to bring in a top-quality replacement that fits more into Amorim’s plans.

Instead of McAtee: Pep must finally cash in on “ ineffective” Man City star

Manchester City’s mass-squad overhaul is already in full swing.

The Citizens have spent around £125m this January on four players with an average age of 20 years old; Pep Guardiola threw both Abdukodir Khusanov and Omar Marmoush in for their debuts against Chelsea last Saturday.

Meantime, Vitor Reis will be hoping to make his own debut against Arsenal on Sunday, while Juma Bah’s maiden outing in sky blue will have to wait, as he’ll spend the remainder of the campaign on loan at Lens.

Elsewhere, Kyle Walker has joined AC Milan on loan, and he could be the first of many Man City stalwarts set to depart over the coming months.

Manchester City youngster pushing to leave

As reported by Florian Plettenberg and Patrick Berge of Sky Sports Deutschland, Bayer Leverkusen are “trying to secure” Manchester City youngster James McAtee.

James Ducker of the Telegraph noted earlier in the window that fellow Bundesliga-outfit Borussia Dortmund were also attempting to sign the 22-year-old, although their interest appears to have cooled since Nuri Şahin’s sacking.

Guardiola has previously described McAtee as “special”, but the youngster has started just four times this season, all coming in cup competitions, seeing just 157 minutes of action in the Premier League and Champions League.

Jacek Kulig of Football Talent Scout described McAtee as a “top talent”, and the youngster has proved his worth throughout January, bagging a first-ever senior hat-trick against Salford in the FA Cup, before heading home his first-ever Premier League goal for Man City during the 6-0 demolition of Ipswich.

Sam Lee of the Athletic believes he is frustrated by his “limited opportunities”. However, as outlined earlier this week, this could prove to be a Cole Palmer-esque mistake, and there’s a much more high-profile member of the Man City squad they should squeeze out instead to make room for McAtee.

Manchester City's record signing continues to underwhelm

By rolling home a penalty against Salford, Jack Grealish ended his 392-day wait for a goal, before then lashing home the opener against Paris Saint Germain, albeit in vain, as the Citizens were beaten 4-2 at Parc des Princes.

Despite ending his draught, Man City’s club-record signing has still come in for widespread criticism.

Dev Bajwa described him as “ineffective”, James Westwood of Goal believes his ‘talents are wasted at Man City’, labelling him a ‘depreciating asset’, while Richard Jolly of the Independent notes that he is not the same player he once was at Aston Villa, blaming Guardiola for turning ‘one of the most exciting attacking players in world football into someone who is neither exciting nor attacking’.

Jolly adds that Grealish’s ‘lack of productivity has become more of an issue’, so let’s assess Grealish’s season-by-season statistics.

The table makes for interesting reading, backing up the assertion that Grealish has never been the same player at Man City that he once was with Villa.

Manchester City's Jack Grealish

During his final season in the Midlands, Grealish racked up more goals, a higher goal – xG figure, more progressive carries and a higher take-on success percentage than he ever has during any of his four campaigns in Manchester.

On the flip side, two statistics are higher than ever this season. They are: pass completion % and toucher per 90.

This underlines that Grealish – who has been linked with an exit of late – while often heavily involved in play, is not offering much in the final third, so now might be time for the Citizens to move on their winger, currently earning £300k-per-week, to make space for McAtee.

Will Jacks follows Moeen Ali's lead in Test allrounder bid

Surrey spinner “working as hard as I can on my bowling” ahead of England’s return to Pakistan in December

Matt Roller26-Sep-2022Will Jacks is one of six England players who will fly home from Pakistan next week while the rest of the touring squad travel to Australia for the T20 World Cup, but he hopes that he will have the chance to return before long.Jacks had only taken four first-class wickets this time last year and his first-class bowling average is 53.28 but he made a significant contribution to Surrey’s title-winning County Championship season with bat and ball and is in the frame for a place in the Test squad as a back-up allrounder for England’s three-match tour to Pakistan in December.Gareth Batty, Surrey’s interim head coach, has drawn a comparison with Moeen Ali and Jacks revealed that the pair spent some time working on his bowling together during the Karachi leg of England’s T20I series. With Moeen distancing himself from a Test call-up earlier in the tour despite having reversed his retirement from the format earlier this year, Jacks will come into contention.Related

Buttler 'still a while off' from return in Lahore leg of T20I series

“I’m working as hard as I can on my bowling,” Jacks said, speaking at the Pearl Continental hotel in Lahore after flying from Karachi on Monday. “I’ve been chatting to Mo since I’ve been here and we’ve been talking about our similarities as bowlers, me compared to him when he was younger.”He sees a lot of similarities in our actions – the way our arms move, all technical stuff – and it’s about how I can almost… not replicate what he’s done, because everyone is different, but take things from how he’s gone about changing his action [and] become tighter, so that I can bowl more consistently.”I know there’s something there for me and I know if I can improve then going forward, I can make myself into that allrounder and push for spots. I know how important that is and I’m giving everything to try to make myself that.”Jacks has developed his bowling significantly in recent years, to the extent that Batty told him in pre-season that he was likely to start as Surrey’s main spinner. His selection was controversial at the time, squeezing Amar Virdi and Dan Moriarty – widely considered to be two of England’s most promising young spinners – out of the side, but has been vindicated by their title win.Jacks’ contribution with the ball was relatively modest, with 17 wickets at 47.00, but he regularly performed a holding role and allowed seamers to rotate. He also finished the season with 648 runs at 54.00 from the middle order, and earned a Lions call-up for the four-day match against South Africa in August.”There were chats with the coaches there,” he said of his experience with the Lions. “They spoke about how they liked the way I put shape on the ball and spin the ball, so they’re obviously telling me to keep working and keep pushing which I am doing.”The first five or six [Championship] games before the T20s, I made loads of mistakes and bowled a lot of terrible balls, but it’s something that I’ve really had to grow. It’s forced me to learn quickly, which has definitely helped me, and when we came back I feel like I bowled much more consistently and more maturely.Jacks made 40 from 22 balls on his T20I debut•Getty Images”I was coming in and playing instead of two guys who have done really well. They’ve got records over a few years, so I did kind of feel that pressure. At the beginning, I put too much pressure on myself: I was expecting to bowl like a real high-quality county spinner when at that stage I wasn’t that.”Jacks is one of three Surrey players in Pakistan for the T20I series and admitted it was “strange” to miss out on their title celebrations after playing an important role in their title win. “Me, Sam [Curran] and Toppers [Reece Topley] were on the WhatsApp group, seeing the photos and videos sent through and were disappointed to be missing out on the fun,” he said.”But you wouldn’t change playing for England for anything. It’s a mixed feeling: I’m over the moon and delighted to be here – it’s something I’ve worked my whole life for. But seeing those celebrations… I’m not going to lie, I was gutted to miss out. When I go back in a week’s time, I’ll celebrate with them.”Jacks has not yet been required with the ball in this series and has experienced contrasting emotions with the bat, hitting 40 off 22 on debut before being bowled by Mohammad Hasnain for a third-ball duck in Pakistan’s last-gasp win on Sunday night.”I’ve loved every second,” he said. “All the games have been such high intensity, and the crowds have been amazing. The message to me coming in has been to play my natural way and play how I’ve done for Surrey: that’s what’s got me into this team so I should play how I have been to stay there and perform in international cricket.”

Former elite umpire Asad Rauf dies aged 66

Asad Rauf, the former ICC elite panel umpire from Pakistan, has died following a cardiac arrest in Lahore. Rauf was 66 years old. He officiated in 64 Tests (49 as on-field umpire and 15 as TV umpire), 139 ODIs and 28 T20Is.Rauf was one of Pakistan’s most prominent umpires in the mid-2000s, having been elevated to the ICC’s elite panel in 2006. He had officiated in his first Test the previous year, and been on the ODI panel since 2004, having stood in his first ODI in 2000. He was a popular figure on the circuit who, alongside Aleem Dar, did his bit in improving the reputation of Pakistani umpires before the neutral umpires era. But his career came to an abrupt halt in 2013 when he was named as a “wanted accused” by Mumbai police in their investigation into the IPL spot-fixing scandal, where Rauf had been umpiring. Rauf left India before the end of that IPL season and but was withdrawn from the Champions Trophy that followed by the ICC and later that year would be dropped from the ICC’s elite panel, though the ICC insisted it wasn’t because his name had come up in the investigations.Rauf protested his innocence throughout and said he would be happy to cooperate with the ACSU. In 2016, the BCCI banned Rauf for five years on four charges of corruption and misconduct.Rauf had a substantial first-class career as a middle-order batter before he turned to umpiring, appearing for National Bank and Railways, averaging 28.76 from 71 first-class matches.

Rangers star just showed why Koppen can forget about signing Lyall Cameron

The January transfer window still has just over a week left to run and Glasgow Rangers are still reportedly looking at potential deals, for this month and for the summer.

Rafael Fernandes recently arrived on loan from Lille, with an option to make the deal permanent at the end of the season, but did not make his debut in the 3-1 win over Dundee United on Sunday.

However, the Light Blues are yet to bring in a frontline signing to come in as an immediate starter and upgrade for the squad, with the young defender their only addition of the window to date.

The Gers beat Dundee United 3-1, partly thanks to the stunning strike from Cyriel Dessers above, but they are in the market for another signing, with a player from the other side in Dundee on their radar – Lyall Cameron.

Rangers' interest in Lyall Cameron

The Daily Mail recently reported that Rangers are interested in a deal to sign the 22-year-old starlet when his contract at Dundee expires in the summer.

Clement and technical director Nils Koppen are looking to strike a pre-contract agreement this month ahead of a move for him in the summer, although Aberdeen are also in the running and want to convince him to join them over making the switch to Ibrox.

Cameron has scored five goals and provided four assists in 22 appearances in the Scottish Premiership for Dundee so far this season as an attacking or central midfield player.

Whilst he is out of contract, Rangers would still need to pay a compensation fee and wages for the 22-year-old Scottish whiz, which means that he would not come as cheap as advertised with his expiring deal.

Koppen could save the club’s money, however, after another excellent performance from Ianis Hagi on Sunday proved that he has what it takes to be a star for the Gers moving forward.

Ianis Hagi's performance against Dundee United

The Romania international was not in Clement’s plans, due to a contract dispute, at the start of the season and there may, therefore, have been transfer plans drawn up for the future without him being part of it.

His current deal is up at the end of the season but the manager reportedly wants to keep hold of the attacking midfielder and, hopefully, they can agree an extension with him, which would allow them to move on from Cameron and save money on a new signing.

Hagi has scored one goal and provided five assists, along with five ‘big chances’ created in 11 starts in the Premiership so far this season, with his latest assist coming for Robin Propper on Sunday.

Northern Superchargers 135 for 8 beat Southern Brave 119 for 9 (Ahmed 33, Parnell 4-18) by 16 runsSouthern Brave’s disappointing title defence in the men’s Hundred ended with a whimper as they failed to chase 136 in a dead-rubber defeat against Northern Superchargers at Headingley. Both teams, out of finals contention before a ball was bowled here, should have performed better with the bat on a pitch which was tired but not disastrously so.England’s Harry Brook top-scored with 29 for Superchargers, who were inserted by the reigning champions and made 135 for 8. Fledgling legspinner Rehan Ahmed and seamer James Fuller each finished with 2 for 20.In reply, Brave slumped to 34 for 4 in 26 balls and failed to recover. In posting 119 for 9, they suffered a fifth defeat in eight – this one by 16 runs.Ahmed continued his impressive day with 33, but South African left-arm quick Wayne Parnell’s outstanding four for 16 ensured the Superchargers finish with a fourth win added to as many defeats. After a breezy start, Superchargers were checked by the varied spin of legspinner Ahmed, offie Paul Stirling and left-arm wristspinner Jake Lintott. The latter two struck once apiece. Three of their top four all reached 20 and failed to go on.After the early departure of captain Faf du Plessis to Ahmed, caught by mid-on running around towards mid-off, his opening partner Adam Lyth made 20, David Willey reached 22 and Brook with his aforementioned 29. But all holed out to catches in the deep as the score fell to 91 for 4 after 67 balls.Callum Parkinson celebrates the wicket of James Vince•Getty Images

Seamer Sonny Baker had Lyth caught at deep midwicket off a top-edge and Brook caught in the same position pulling before Ahmed struck again when Adam Hose found long-on.Michael Pepper, David Wiese and Parnell all made it into double figures and threatened late acceleration, though Brave were as clinical with the ball and in the field as they were so often last year and not enough this. Seamer Fuller removed Wiese and Rashid in the penultimate set of five – again to catches in the deep.In many ways, this Brave performance was a microcosm of this season’s campaign: inconsistent. After being polished with the ball and in the field, they were all over the place with the bat in the early stages of their reply, losing some serious firepower in the first 26 balls.Related

Left-arm spinner Callum Parkinson then bowled captain James Vince. From 34 for 4, Ahmed and Ross Whiteley steadied with a partnership of 27.However, when the latter miscued Adil Rashid’s legspin to long-on, leaving the score at 61 for 5 after 49 balls, it felt a decisive juncture. So it proved: big-hitting Singaporean Tim David drilled Wiese to long-off shortly afterwards. The feewheeling Ahmed continued his impressive day, and a turnaround was on the cards when he shared 28 in 16 balls with Fuller, both hitting strong shots down the ground. But when Ahmed miscued Parnell to long-on, leaving the score at 104 for 7 after 83 balls, 32 runs were still required. That target became 26 off 10, and it was all but game over when Parnell yorked Fuller for 25 to leave 22 still needed off six. Willey closed things out by bowling Baker, even celebrating with a forward roll.

Alex Hales' strained relationship with Ben Stokes no barrier to T20 World Cup bid – Matthew Mott

Alex Hales’ strained relationship with Ben Stokes will not throw England off course in their bid to win the T20 World Cup in Australia, according to Matthew Mott.Hales and Stokes were involved in the infamous brawl outside a Bristol nightclub in 2017 that saw Stokes charged with affray – he denied the charge and was found not guilty – and both players handed backdated bans and fines by the Cricket Disciplinary Commission. In his recently-released documentary, , Stokes refers to “my friend at the time, Alex” when addressing the incident and did not answer questions about Hales during interviews about the film.Stokes, who has been rested for England’s seven-match T20 international tour of Pakistan after a busy summer captaining the Test side, was tight-lipped when asked about his relationship with Hales and whether they had spoken recently earlier this month, saying only: “We’ve both got the same goal: to win World Cups.”Mott, England’s white-ball head coach, had not worked with Hales before his recall as an injury replacement for Jonny Bairstow for trips to Pakistan and Australia, and said that he had no concerns about the potential for friction within the squad.”They might not be best mates and that’s OK,” Mott said. “I’m sure you work with colleagues all the time who aren’t your best mate but you can work with them if you’ve got a common goal.”Ben’s come out and stated that as well. He wants to win World Cups. I’m sure Alex does as well and we all do, so we try and pick the best players and if they end up becoming good mates again that’s great; if not, as long as they’re going towards that goal of winning the World Cup together then that’s how teams function.”Related

Hales himself did not specifically address his relationship with Stokes when speaking in Karachi on Friday but was keen to insist that he was “only looking to the future” rather than dwelling on the chain of events that led to his three-year exile from international cricket.Mott also revealed that he considered “the key phone call” involved in Hales’ recall to be one he made to Trevor Bayliss. Jos Buttler made several calls to senior players after Bairstow’s injury came to light but Mott decided he should also speak to the man who was England’s coach at the time of Hales’ last-minute omission from the 2019 50-over World Cup squad after news emerged of a second failed recreational drugs test.”I rang Trevor Bayliss around the time we were considering it and asked if he had any views,” Mott said. “Obviously he was coach at the time and has worked with him at Sydney Thunder. He said he’s had absolutely no problem with him at all, he’s made mistakes but he’s trying to get better.”For me, that’s it. Nobody’s perfect – I’m certainly not – but if he’s trying to get better and he’s the best player, then we can work around it.”Like Jos said, we asked the senior players whether they had an issue. It was well before my time, so one of the things I said was ‘mate, you start with a blank canvas’. He’s been contrite and has shown he’s trying to learn from his experiences.”

Big Young upgrade: Everton make late contact to sign "beautiful" PL star

The January transfer window officially slams shut on Monday of next week and Everton manager David Moyes could look to bolster his squad before the deadline.

He came in to replace Sean Dyche in the Goodison Park dugout earlier this month and has won two of his three Premier League matches in charge so far, beating Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Scottish boss, who is in his second spell at the club, is yet to make his first splash in the market since making his return to Merseyside, but still has a few days left to do so.

In fact, the Toffees are reportedly looking to bolster their squad before the end of the window and they have a Premier League player in their sights.

Everton's interest in Premier League defender

According to Turkish outlet Star, Everton are one of the teams plotting a deal to sign Kyle Walker-Peters from relegation-threatened Southampton.

Transfer Focus

His contract is due to expire at the end of the season, and the Star claims that the English right-back does not want to stay at St. Mary’s beyond the end of that deal.

It states that the Toffees are already in contact over a possible swoop for the former Tottenham Hotspur man, who would be available on a free transfer in the summer.

The report claims that Super Lig side Galatasaray are also interested in the defender and have already submitted an offer to sign him for a fee of £5m.

This suggests that Everton may have to push to sign the 27-year-old star in the current window, to avoid losing out to the Turkish giants, and they should do exactly that because he could come in as a big upgrade on Ashley Young.

Why Walker-Peters is an upgrade on Young

The Southampton defender, who can operate at right-back or left-back, has been a star for the strugglers in the Premier League this season, after he created 12 ‘big chances’ in 43 outings in the Championship during their promotion campaign last term.

Young has started 17 of his 19 appearances in the top-flight for the Toffees in the 2024/25 campaign and the former England international turns 40 in the summer.

Everton and Moyes could land his long-term successor by signing Walker-Peters, who is 12 years younger, either this month or in the summer window on a free transfer.

Walker-Peters, who was described as a “beautiful” footballer by ex-boss Russell Martin, has the dynamism and ability to offer more in transition, as shown by his dribbling numbers, whilst also being harder for opposition players to get past.
