Alasdair Gold spotted £75,000-a-week Spurs player jogging back vs Brighton

Tottenham Hotspur had an afternoon to forget on Sunday as they threw away a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 to Brighton at the Amex Stadium. Ange Postecoglou’s side had dominated the first half, going into the break with a two-goal advantage thanks to a sixth goal in as many games from Brennan Johnson and a strike from James Maddison.

But things quickly fell apart after half-time, with Brighton scoring three in just over 20 second half minutes through Yankuba Minteh, Georginio Rutter, and finally Danny Welbeck to complete a remarkable turnaround.

Alasdair Gold spots Spurs star jogging back for Brighton equaliser

Unsurprisingly, Destiny Udogie was handed the worst of the criticism after a nightmare performance for the young talent. Alasdair Gold gave the Italian full-back only a 3/10 for what he called a “poor day at the office” in his post-match review.

“Back after missing the midweek match and he played well in the first half only to make a mess off trying to clear a cross and presenting the ball to Minteh to score,” Gold wrote of Udogie. “Put in a weak challenge on Rutter before he scored Brighton’s second and was poor again with the same player for the third, getting himself nutmegged and beaten.”

Destiny Udogie

Fingers have already been pointed at who else was to blame for Spurs’ collapse however, and Gold took aim at Rodrigo Bentancur for his roles in Brighton’s second and third goals, handing the midfielder a measly 4/10 for his performance.

“A calm first half gave way to a lacklustre second period,” Gold wrote of the Uruguayan midfielder, who currently earns £75,000 per week at the London Stadium. “Jogged back for the second goal with no urgency and he was far too laidback in the build-up to Brighton’s third goal.”

Angry Ange rips into Spurs' "worst defeat"

Just as Gold was unimpressed with Tottenham’s implosion at the Amex, so was Spurs boss Postecoglou. In fact, he described the defeat as the worst he’s seen from his side since taking over as manager in June 2023.

Ange let Spurs star leave in 2023, now he's massively outperforming Johnson

He’d be a treat at the heart of this Lilywhites squad…

ByAngus Sinclair Oct 5, 2024

“Disappointing, frustrated and absolutely gutted with that. Worst defeat since I’ve been here. Unacceptable second half,” an angry Postecoglou told Sky Sports after the match. “Nowhere near where we should be. We got carried away with how were were going,” he said. “We kind of accepted our fate and it is hard to understand as we’ve not done that while I’ve been here. We paid the price.”

Postecoglou called the loss as bad as it gets: “We lost all our duels and if you’re not competitive it is not going to work, we were not competitive. They all go international duty the majority of them. They will process it individually and I will process it when everyone gets back.”

As a result of the defeat, Tottenham now sit in ninth place in the Premier League, level on 10 points with Nottingham Forest and Brentford.

Afghanistan's Qais Ahmad, Naveen-ul-Haq and Waqar Salamkheil set to feature in CPL 2021

Three Afghanistan players have been named in the reshuffled squad lists for the upcoming CPL season: the Jamaica Tallawahs’ Qais Ahmad and the Guyana Amazon Warriors pair of Naveen-ul-Haq and Waqar Salamkheil. Ibrahim Zadran and Shafiqullah Ghafari, who had originally been drafted by the Tallawahs and the Barbados Royals respectively in May, were not part of the final squads.Related

Afghanistan is in the midst of major upheaval, with the Taliban taking back the political reins following the withdrawal of US troops from the country. It remains to be seen how cricket is affected by these events, though ACB CEO Hamid Shinwari has been quoted saying he expects the sport to carry on as before.”We will resume our office from tomorrow and the national camp which was underway ahead of the Pakistan series in Sri Lanka will also resume after a two-day break with the change in regime,” Shinwari told on Monday.ESPNcricinfo understands that Naveen, who was the top wicket-taker in the Vitality Blast in England, is already serving his quarantine in St Kitts, which will host the entire CPL season starting August 26.CPL 2021 squad changes•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

The top-tier Afghanistan players – Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi and Mujeeb Ur Rahman – weren’t part of the initial list. They are expected to be playing for Afghanistan in their three-match ODI series against Pakistan, which is scheduled to take place at Hambantota in early September.Meanwhile, it is understood that South Africa allrounder Chris Morris, who was the Royals’ first-round pick, has opted out of the tournament for personal reasons. In his place, the Royals have signed the New Zealand wicketkeeper-batter Glenn Phillips, who has been in good form in the Vitality Blast as well as in The Hundred. Phillips has been a CPL regular, ever since his Auckland coach, Mark O’Donnell, drafted him as a replacement for Shakib Al Hasan at the Jamaica Tallawahs in 2017. He has been the Tallawahs’ leading scorer for three consecutive seasons.South Africans Anrich Nortje and Rassie van der Dussen, who were originally drafted by the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots, will miss the tournament, as will Sri Lanka’s legspin-bowling allrounder Wanindu Hasaranga. All three will be involved in South Africa’s tour of Sri Lanka, which begins on September 2 and will clash with the CPL.Saint Lucia Kings, though, have retained Faf du Plessis as their captain. du Plessis had recently been ruled out of the Hundred after failing to recover adequately from the concussion he suffered during the PSL two months ago. It remains to be seen whether he is fit again for the CPL.Seam-bowling allrounder Isuru Udana is set to turn out for the reigning champions Trinbago Knight Riders, having retired from international cricket following Sri Lanka’s white-ball home series against India. He will be joined by Tim Seifert and Yasir Shah at TKR. Shah, who is currently part of the Pakistan squad in the Caribbean, will replace Sandeep Lamichhane, while Seifert, who was not initially retained at the draft by TKR, is back in for the Zimbabwe allrounder Sikandar Raza. The England trio of Ravi Bopara (Patriots), Samit Patel (Kings) and Jake Lintott (Royals) have also won late deals. ESPNcricinfo understands that they will arrive in the Caribbean after playing in the Vitality Blast quarter-finals for their respective counties.Lintott, the Somerset-born left-arm wristspinner, had not even registered for the Hundred draft nearly two years ago, but is now Southern Brave’s highest wicket-taker in the tournament, with ten strikes in seven games.Singapore-born Hobart Hurricanes batter Tim David will replace Matthew Wade at the Kings. David had a breakout PSL and then extended his strong form at Surrey. Netherlands’ Paul van Meekeren, who was recently in action for Durham in the Royal London one-day cup, will fill in for Nortje at the Patriots. The entire CPL will be hosted by Warner Park from August 26 to September 15. The 33-match tournament will allow fans to attend at up to 50% capacity of the 8,000-seat venue – as long as they show proof of vaccination to enter the stadium facility. Players, support staff, commentators and broadcast crew in the CPL bubble can move directly to the IPL bubble in the UAE.

Guéhi, who developed in Chelsea’s academy before moving to Palace in 2021, has been linked with a return to Stamford Bridge as the Blues evaluate their defensive options. The 23-year-old’s contract at Selhurst Park expires in 18 months, and with no extension in sight, transfer interest in the England international has grown.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Chelsea’s defensive depth has been tested this season, particularly with Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile sidelined. The January transfer window offers them the opportunity to shore up their backline and the potential acquisition of Guéhi aligns with the club’s long-term planning, as he is both a proven Premier League talent and a player with significant upside.

  • WHAT MARESCA SAID

Speaking during a press conference on Friday, Maresca clarified the club’s position on Guéhi, stating: “The only thing I can say is Marc Guéhi is a Palace player. I like Marc, no doubt about it, but he is not currently part of our team. I also like the centre-halves we have and I like different central defenders in Italy, Spain and France but that doesn't mean we are going to buy the player. It is a normal situation when you have these central defender injuries that there's speculation there. There's nothing there."

Alongside links to Guéhi, reports have emerged about Chelsea possibly recalling Trevoh Chalobah from his loan at Crystal Palace. Maresca addressed these rumours as well, saying: "This is exactly the same. Trevor is a good player but at this moment is a Palace player. So, we'll see."

Newcastle United have also shown interest in Guéhi, having attempted to sign him last summer. However, their efforts were unsuccessful, with Crystal Palace reportedly valuing the centre-back at around £70 million then. Palace remain steadfast in their demand for a substantial transfer fee, but sources suggest the club might accept a reduced offer of around £40 million due to Guéhi’s contract nearing its expiration.

Chelsea could activate 'Marc Guehi discount' as Blues look to re-sign England defender from Crystal Palace

Chelsea could reportedly activate a unique 'Marc Guehi discount' clause as the Blues look to re-sign the England defender from Crystal Palace.

Chelsea vying for Guehi in JanuaryPalace demand approximately £60mBlues could claim 20% of future feeFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

According to the initial discussions between Chelsea and Palace took place in early January and have continued over the following weeks. The Eagles have set Guehi's asking price at approximately £60 million ($73m), a figure Chelsea finds steep given the player’s contract, which has 18 months remaining.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Chelsea are well-positioned to negotiate a more favourable deal for Guehi, thanks to a sell-on clause included when the defender moved to Palace for £18m ($22m) in 2021. The clause grants Chelsea 20 per cent of any future transfer fee and the right to match offers from other clubs. This contractual provision could effectively act as a discount, reducing the financial burden on Chelsea. While there were initial talks of waiving the sell-on clause to simplify negotiations, Palace’s high valuation appears to have been factored in the potential discount.

Chelsea had explored the possibility of including Chalobah as part of the deal for Guehi to lower the transfer fee. However, they dropped that possibility and recalled the defender from his loan at Selhurst Park on a separate deal.

It is understood that Guehi’s salary demands are around £170,000 per week. If signed, this would place him among the highest earners at Chelsea, a significant commitment under the current wage structure implemented by the club's ownership group. While Guehi is reportedly aware of Chelsea’s interest, the west London club has yet to formalise a bid. Sources close to the situation suggest Chelsea may put their pursuit of Guehi on hold unless Palace lower their asking price.

Rodgers must drop Hatate to unleash Celtic star with "massive quality"

Celtic take to the field at Parkhead this evening in their first European match of the 2024/25 campaign against SK Slovan in the Champions League.

The Hoops watched on as the first round of fixtures took place on Tuesday night and will now be looking to add their name to the list of winners on match-day one.

There were some intriguing scorelines on Tuesday, including Bayern Munich beating Dinamo Zagreb 9-2, and Brendan Rodgers will be hoping for a strong win tonight.

The Glasgow giants do head into this match off the back of an impressive start to the season at domestic level, both in the Scottish Premiership and the League Cup.

Celtic have won all six of their games in all competitions and conceded one goal, with five clean sheets and five wins in five matches in the top-flight.

The Premiership champions come into this clash with Slovan off the back of a 2-0 win over Hearts at Parkhead on Saturday, but that win, and their fantastic start to the campaign, does not mean that the starting XI is immune to change.

One player who could be in danger of losing his position in the line-up for this Champions League match is central midfielder Reo Hatate.

Why Reo Hatate should be dropped

Rodgers must bin the Japan international from the starting XI due to his last two performances in the Premiership and his previous form in Europe for the club.

The 26-year-old ace has not been at his glittering best in the last two games for Celtic, against Rangers and Hearts, and has left himself open to being dropped from the team.

In the 3-0 win over the Gers at the start of the month, Hatate lost the physical battle – losing four of his six duels – and missed a ‘big chance’ to find the back of the net, firing wide after finding himself in front of goal from six yards out on the left side of the box.

Against Hearts, the Japanese midfielder was too easily beaten by opposition players in physical contests, as he lost four of his seven ground duels.

The central midfielder was also sloppy in possession against the Jam Tarts. He only completed 74% of his attempted passes and lost possession 20 times, without registering a goal or an assist.

Hatate also featured in the Champions League for Celtic last season and his struggles from the last two games, in and out of possession, were on display in those games.

As you can see in the table above, the physicality of the matches in Europe was too much for the Japanese lightweight to handle, as he lost the majority of his ground duels and all of his aerial contests, whilst not making a single tackle or interception.

Hatate’s 72% pass completion rate, with zero goal contributions, also shows that he struggled to retain possession for his side, which shows that the midfielder did not offer much on or off the ball in the Champions League last term.

With this and his recent performances in mind, Rodgers must brutally bin him from the starting XI and unleash Luke McCowan for the first time.

Luke McCowan's time with Celtic so far

The Scottish giants swooped to sign the 26-year-old dynamo from Premiership rivals Dundee on deadline day for a reported fee of £1m to bolster their squad.

He made his debut less than 48 hours after his arrival at Parkhead, playing 13 minutes off the bench against Rangers, and captain Callum McGregor claimed after the game that the ex-Dundee man has “massive quality”.

The left-footed gem was then handed ten minutes off the bench against Hearts and caught the eye, winning two of his three duels, making one tackle and one interception, and scoring the second goal for Celtic.

James Forrest played the ball back to him on the edge of the box and the midfield maestro found the far bottom corner with a well-taken strike from range.

That offered a glimpse at the quality McGregor reference after the Old Firm clash and Rodgers must now unleash him from the start, in the hope that his form for Dundee over the last 13 months carries over to his time at Parkhead.

Luke McCowan's quality for Dundee

The Scottish star started the current campaign with two goals and one assist in three appearances for Dundee in the Premiership, before his move to Paradise.

He also won eight tackles and made six interceptions, whilst winning 15 of his 22 ground duels, in those three outings, which shows that the £1m-rated ace can contribute at both ends of the pitch.

It suggests that the summer signing could come in and off more of a defensive presence than Hatate, who has struggled with his ground duels in recent games and in Europe last term, to win the midfield battle against Slovan this evening.

His impressive start to this season comes off the back of a fantastic 2023/24 campaign for McCowan in the Scottish top-flight, as he showcased his quality week-in-week-out.

As you can see in the table above, the former Dundee wizard caught the eye with his ability to provide a big threat as both a scorer and a creator of goals in the middle of the park.

He hit double figures for goals and may have been frustrated to end the season with only five assists to his name, as his teammates failed to make the most of the nine ‘big chances’ that he created for them throughout the campaign.

Meanwhile, Hatate has never managed more than six league goals in a single season in the Premiership for Celtic, which suggests that McCowan would offer more as a goalscorer for Rodgers in that central midfield slot.

As can be seen, Palace brought in eight new players but did make a healthy profit after cashing in on the likes of Michael Olise and Joachim Andersen. Of the new arrivals, much will be expected of Eddie Nketiah and Ismaila Sarr to replace the goals and creativity following Olise and Jordan Ayew’s exits.

Nketiah is already off the mark in Palace colours, scoring his first for the club against QPR in the Carabao Cup, with Glasner saying after the game on the forward: “You can trust that we did our homework before signing him. When you watch Eddie play at Arsenal, he played as a nine he was very involved in the game.

“He’s not a pivot, like in basketball, who is waiting for the ball. He’s so, so smart in finding the space. He can play as a nine, as this 10, and when we switched three days ago to a 4-4-2 against Leicester, he can play around the striker. He has such a good feeling (for the game). Sometimes, he needs to stay in the pocket and then make the run in behind.”

Palace have been linked with making further additions in the final third, though, with Real Sociedad’s Sheraldo Becker a target for January. Reports have claimed that a £10m deal is being worked on ahead of the New Year as the club look to get things in place.

However, with the ability to sign free agents outside the transfer window, Palace appear to have their eye on an international attacker.

Crystal Palace eye move for free agent Yusuf Yazici

According to HITC, free agent Yusuf Yazici is still hopeful of sealing a move to the Premier League, with Crystal Palace one of the clubs considering making an offer.

Alongside the Eagles, Aston Villa and Bournemouth are also weighing up moves for the 27-year-old, who left Lille in the summer and is yet to find a new club.

Yazici, a Turkey international, came through the books at Trabzonspor and was with Lille for five years. He went out on loan to CSKA Moscow and back to Trabzonspor during his time with the French side and has racked up 67 goals for club and country during his career.

Primarily an attacking midfielder who can also play on the right wing and as a centre-forward, Yazici was even hailed by former Arsenal star Mesut Ozil back in 2018, who said: “Yusuf Yazici is an amazing No 10. We have a lot of similarities; his left foot, his position, his passing, and calmness on the ball.”

Chelsea thought they had the next Lampard, now he’s unemployed at just 31

Chelsea has been home to numerous elite-level talents over the years, helping the club cement their place as one of the big six sides in the Premier League.

Since 2000, the club have won five top-flight titles along with two Champions League triumphs, mainly thanks to the investment of former owner Roman Abramovich.

However, since he sold the club in 2022 to Todd Boehly, the Blues have failed to win a single trophy, with an emphasis on the American needing to return the club to its glory days.

Striker Didier Drogba played a huge part in the club’s previous success, making 344 appearances and scoring 147 times – including in the Champions League final victory over Bayern Munich back in 2012.

The Ivorian starred alongside one talent who captured the hearts of many during his own time at Stamford Bridge.

Frank Lampard’s time at Chelsea

Midfielder Frank Lampard will forever be an integral part of the Chelsea side that created new history for the club during the early 2000s, often taking the armband in the absence of John Terry.

Premier League legend Frank Lampard

He joined the Blues in an £11m deal way back in 2001 from fellow Premier League side West Ham United, making an immediate impact on the first-team squad despite his tender age of just 22 when he made the move across London.

Lampard produced numerous heroic displays during his time at Stamford Bridge, including in the Champions League semi-final back in 2008, scoring a vital penalty just days after the tragic passing of his mother.

The midfielder eventually departed the Bridge back in 2014 after 13 successful years at the club, amassing a total of 481 appearances – whilst making himself the club’s record goalscorer in the process.

He embodied everything about being a Chelsea player with his work rate, and desire to help the club succeed, whilst also having the quality to turn the game on its head in an instant – subsequently helping the club achieve their respective titles during his time at the club.

After joining the club back in 2013, midfielder Marco van Ginkel arrived from Dutch side Vitesse with high hopes of being the next big talent at Stamford Bridge for Chelsea.

He only made four appearances during his debut campaign in England, before various different loan spells away from the club at the likes of AC Milan and Stoke City.

Rangers target Marco van Ginkel.

However, Van Ginkel, who was previously hailed as ‘the next Lampard’ when arriving, subsequently spent three separate loan spells at PSV Eindhoven, before permanently joining the Dutch side during the summer of 2021.

He made 76 appearances for Eindhoven across his three temporary stints at the club before his permanent transfer, but he would only last two seasons before yet another move.

Van Ginkel moved to Vitesse, the club he started his career at, scoring nine goals in 45 appearances last season, before leaving at the end of the season, with the midfielder now a free agent at the age of just 31.

It’s a real shame to see a player with such high expectations fail to deliver during his career, with the Dutchman another player in a long line that has never matched the promise demonstrated in his early days.

His time at Chelsea was a huge disappointment, only making four appearances over an eight-year spell, with the midfielder in desperate need of a move to reignite his once promising career.
