According to Real Madrid have identified 25-year-old Zubimendi as a possible successor to Toni Kroos, who retired this summer. However, the Spanish giants appear to be taking a cautious approach, as they assess other potential options before making a definitive move. The midfielder, whose release clause stands at €60 million (£50.1m/$62.33m), fits the profile of what Los Blancos are seeking: a young, talented player, who has a future with the Spanish national team.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

A significant factor in the transfer saga is Zubimendi’s apparent inclination towards the Premier League. The report suggests he was uninterested in joining Barcelona during the summer, partly due to his desire to explore opportunities in England’s top flight. This preference for the Premier League strengthens Liverpool and City’s position in the race. Both clubs are reportedly keen on the Euro 2024 winner, with City boss Pep Guardiola said to view Zubimendi as a long-term replacement for 28-year-old Rodri.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Despite mounting interest from top clubs, Zubimendi is firmly committed to Real Sociedad. A winter transfer has been ruled out as it would severely weaken Sociedad. But things could potentially shake up in the summer as several European giants are keeping tabs on him.

    WHAT NEXT FOR ZUBIMENDI?

The fight for Zubimendi’s signature is expected to intensify and Madrid will need to act swiftly if they wish to compete with Liverpool and City, who hold a significant advantage due to the player’s Premier League aspirations. In the short term, he will be back in action after the winter break against Ponferradina in the Copa del Rey.

Major concerns at Lennoxtown about injury to Celtic ace before St Johnstone

A major injury concern has emerged at Celtic regarding a “terrific” player, prior to this weekend’s Scottish Premiership clash with St Johnstone.

Latest Celtic news

The Hoops are looking to keep up their 100% winning start to the league season this weekend, making the trip to St Johnstone on Saturday evening. Brendan Rodgers’ side will once again be favourites to prevail, and they have a great chance to open up an eight-point lead over Rangers, prior to their home meeting with Hibernian on Sunday. It would heap further pressure on their biggest title rivals, who know their further dropped points could be fatal even this early in the season.

Meanwhile, exciting Celtic transfer news continues to emerge, with 18-year-old Hammarby starlet Bazoumana Toure linked with a move to Parkhead in a potential £8m transfer. Capable of thriving on both wings, the teenager has already made 16 appearances at senior level for his current club, and even more impressive is that he has registered six goals and three assists in that time.

While there is plenty to be positive about at Parkhead currently, Rodgers has now suffered a potentially big blow after a fresh injury update dropped.

Celtic dealt injury blow to "terrific" hero

According to a fresh update from Football Scotland, Cameron Carter-Vickers missed Celtic training at Lennoxtown on Friday before the St Johnstone game, throwing his involvement in the match into serious doubt. Brendan Rodgers confirmed he had picked up an injury after he missed the win against Falkirk last week and the worst may yet be to come.

Celtic defender Cameron Carter-Vickers

Not having Carter-Vickers available immediately weakens Celtic, considering what an impressive performer he has been at the heart of the defence for so long, featuring in every minute in the Scottish Premiership this season, winning an average of 3.4 aerial duels per game.

Former Hoops ace Jackie McNamara has heaped praise on the USA international “Carter-Vickers is strong and has a lot of attributes. He’s been a terrific signing. Yeah, he’s up there with some of the best – although he’s not quite the same kind of player as Bobo! I played with some cracking centre-backs over the years – Johan Mjallby, Mark Rieper, and so on. Carter-Vickers has definitely been one who has been an excellent signing. He’s very steady and consistent.”

While Celtic could easily get by without Carter-Vickers for a short period, suddenly having him unavailable for a lengthy spell of action could threaten to derail their season, especially in the Champions League.

Worth more than Engels: Celtic star has seen his value rise 500% since exit

The Hoops have watched one former star shine elsewhere…

ByRobbie Walls Sep 26, 2024

The 26-year-old has suffered injury problems in the past, not least undergoing knee surgery last year, so this will be a concerning update for Rodgers and anyone of a Hoops persuasion. The fact that the club are keeping things close to their chest arguably makes it more of a worry, too, so fans must wait with bated breath in the hope of good news.

Sunderland show "interest" in 19 y/o gem also wanted by Boehly at Chelsea

Sunderland are interested in completing the signing of a 19-year-old goalkeeper who is also wanted by Premier League side Chelsea, according to a top foreign source.

Sunderland latest transfer rumours & team news

There continues to be plenty of exciting transfer rumours surrounding the Black Cats despite the window closing, although two worrying exit stories have been doing the rounds of late. Chris Rigg and Anthony Patterson are both being linked with moves away from the Stadium of Light, with the former wanted by both Liverpool and Real Madrid.

The 17-year-old is a special talent who has already become a hugely important figure for Sunderland, appearing in all five of his side’s Championship matches this season and starting four of them, and goalkeeper Patterson is also a vital player with a bright future.

Away from the exit rumours, there are also injury concerns for Regis Le Bris, further adding to the current worries, even though things are going well on the pitch, with the Black Cats sitting second in the Championship table. Dan Ballard was left on crutches after limping out of Sunderland’s surprise 3-2 defeat to Plymouth Argyle last Saturday, while new signing Ian Poveda is still sidelined with a thigh issue.

On a positive note, it now looks as though the Black Cats are eyeing the signing of an exciting young player, following a fresh report this week.

Sunderland keen on signing teenage shot-stopper

According to top Ukrainian source Zorya Londonsk, Sunderland are interested in signing Ukraine Under-19 goalkeeper Vladyslav Krapyvtsov, with Todd Boehly’s Chelsea and Hull City also in the mix.

Krapyvtsov is understandably an unknown to many Sunderland supporters, but the idea of them snapping up a talented youth international with a big future in the game is exciting. Admittedly, it may lead some to further worry about Patterson’s long-term future between the sticks at the Stadium of Light, but the hope is that both are at the club for many years to come.

Krapyvtsov has won seven caps for Ukraine’s Under-19s, proving himself an important starter for his country, and he could grow further by playing alongside superior footballers at Sunderland, going into the youth team initially, before hopefully maturing and making the grade in the senior setup.

Predicting the outcome of any young player’s career is never easy, so it is impossible to see how good the teenage ‘keeper will become, but the fact that he is on trial with Chelsea’s Under-21s immediately speaks volumes about his potential, suggesting Sunderland would be wise to try and entice him to the club.

'Savinho is in better shape & everything than Jack' – Pep Guardiola rips into Grealish as Man City boss suggests out-of-favor winger is not giving his 'best'

Grealish struggling at Man CityGuardiola wants more from wingerInsists Savinho 'deserves' starting roleFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱Getty ImagesWHAT HAPPENED?

Upon his return from injury, Grealish has watched from the sidelines as City winger Savinho has started ahead of him in the past two games. Following the Citizens' 4-1 Premier League win over West Ham on Saturday, which saw Savinho lay on three assists, manager Guardiola has said the summer signing is in "better shape and everything" than Grealish and suggested the England international may not be giving his "best" at present.

AdvertisementAFPWHAT PEP GUARDIOLA SAID

Guardiola said, via The Telegraph: “I fought a lot for him [Grealish], fought a lot to be here – to say ‘come on, do it again, do it again’. I saw him, I saw your level and I want that, every single training session and every single game. If not, Savinho. Does anyone think Savinho doesn’t deserve to play? No. He deserves [it]. That’s why I play him because he produces. As much as he looks at himself, he will see the competition and he has to compete, himself. Savinho is in better shape and everything than Jack and that’s why I played Savinho. I want the Jack that won the treble? Yeah. I want it. But I try to be honest with myself for that.

“What happened with Savinho’s delivery in the box? It’s higher than the other wingers in that position. And they have to fight. You have to prove ‘OK, I’m going to fight with Savinho, to deserve to play in that position’. And every single day, and every single week and every single month. Two weeks ago, Jack was injured and he needs rhythm and to play but players need training. I don’t have any doubt about the quality of Jack or any of these players. But they have to, right now, today at 3pm, be at your best. It’s not about what they have done or will do, it’s about 3pm. The one hour 30 minutes, or one hour, 45 minutes, we’re going to play, the responsibility belongs to the players, not to me.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Grealish swapped Aston Villa for City in 2021 in a £100 million ($124m) club-record deal. But in 144 appearances he has scored just 14 goals and bagged 20 assists. He is struggling for game time, has been told to make a Etihad transfer exit and is not the player he once was at Villa. And with Savinho firing on all cylinders at the moment, the 29-year-old could become more of a fringe player as the season progresses.

Hayley Matthews, Anisa Mohammed star as West Indies Women go 2-0 up

Hayley Matthews’ all-round brilliance and Anisa Mohammed’s four-for helped West Indies Women comprehensively beat Pakistan Women in the second ODI and take a 2-0 lead in the five-match series in Antigua. Matthews and Mohammed combined to pick up six wickets between them to restrict Pakistan to a paltry 120, after which the former made 49 as West Indies hunted down the target within 32 overs.Spinners cemented their dominance as Mohammed, Matthews and Karishma Ramharack wrecked Pakistan’s line-up. A 47-run partnership between Muneeba Ali and Omaima Sohail briefly stopped the slide, after Pakistan lost Ayesha Zafar and Javeria Khan within the first five overs. But once Ramharack dismissed Sohail, the trio combined to wipe out the remaining batters as the visitors collapsed from 60 for 2 to 120 all out.Mohammed, who holds the record for taking the most four-fors in women’s ODIs, added one more to take her tally to 13, as she claimed 4 for 27 in 9.4 overs.West Indies then got off to a strong start in the chase as Matthews and Kyshona Knight added 65 for the opening stand. Matthews struck nine fours during her 49 off 58 balls. Although both Matthews and Kycia Knight were both run-out, Kyshona Knight and Deandra Dottin completed the job for the hosts, with eight wickets and 113 balls to spare.”I’m really happy to be able to contribute to a team win,” Matthews told after the win. “Going out there we had a goal of restricting them for under 180 or so and I think we did a fantastic job.”I just wanted to spend some time, obviously we know it was a low sore we were chasing and as batters it was probably the best time to get our confidence up and just spend some time at the crease. I fell one short of a half-century but still happy with the performance and the win.”

Cost £0, now worth £56m: Man Utd hit the jackpot with "future legend"

While the last decade or so has not been spectacular on or off the pitch, Manchester United remain one of the biggest clubs in world football and arguably the biggest in England.

Due to their long and storied past, the Red Devils have a long list of legends that would make practically any club in the world green with envy.

You can go back to the 1950s and 60s for Sir Bobby Charlton and George Best, the 1990s for Éric Cantona and Bryan Robson, or the 2000s into the early 2010s for Premier League icons like Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney.

However, as things stand, it would be hard to point at any player in the current team and call them a legend, although there is one who's seen his value soar since breaking onto the scene who could possibly change that. Still, along with his attacking teammates, his chance to do so is hanging by a thread.

United's young stars

So, for all the doom and gloom that has surrounded United in the last couple of years – some of it entirely justified – the club have still won a League Cup and an FA Cup, and perhaps most importantly for the fans, played a crucial role in stopping Liverpool's title charge last year.

On top of these small victories, the club has been bringing through and signing a plethora of young, exciting talent who could potentially go on to do something special at Old Trafford.

For example, the club splashed £72m on Rasmus Hojlund last summer, and while there is an argument to be made that they overpaid for a then-20-year-old, he has since gone on to show glimpses of genuine talent and ended last season with a tally of 16 goals and two assists in 43 games.

Likewise, while it is far too early to cast ironclad assertions about Leny Yoro, he's an exceptionally highly-rated young defender by those in the know, with analyst Ben Mattinson describing him as possessing "elite potential" and "that same dominance young Saliba" which is high praise indeed.

Lastly, the youngster who currently looks best placed to develop into a United icon is one of their own, Kobbie Mainoo, who, despite being just 19 years old, seems entirely comfortable starting in midfield and has already established himself in the national team squad as well.

However, while all of these youngsters have a genuine chance of writing their names into United folklore in the future, there is another older player who still has the opportunity to do the same, and as an academy graduate, his valuation has shot up over the years.

Marcus Rashford's valuation in 2024

Yes, the player in question is Marcus Rashford.

Now, before the pitchforks come out, yes, he was poor last season, but even then, a return of eight goals and six assists in 43 matches for a winger isn't utterly disastrous.

Moreover, just the campaign prior, he was simply electric, finding the back of the net 30 times and providing 11 assists in 51 games, meaning that he maintained a frankly ludicrous average of a goal involvement every 1.36 games in Erik ten Hag's first season at the club.

It's this ability to have campaigns like that and the fact he's already won 60 senior England caps that leads people like talent scout Jacek Kulig to label him a "future legend," even if that seems a little farfetched at the moment.

Additionally, the fact that he's a local lad who's come through the academy and therefore cost the club nothing in transfer fees helps, and based on his recent valuation, he is still very highly rated, with Football Transfer pricing him at around €67m, which converts to about £56m.

Ultimately, while there might be a significant portion of the fanbase who have given up on Rashford after last season, they shouldn't, as given his talent and body of work, there is every chance he could turn things around and fulfil his potential at the Theatre of Dreams.

Yorkshire couldn’t break free in their seven-over innings as Notts won with 20 balls to spare

Defending champions Nottinghamshire Outlaws secured a home quarter-final in this year’s Vitality Blast with a 10-wicket win over Yorkshire Vikings in a match reduced to seven overs per side after rain delayed the start. With Alex Hales smashing 31 off just nine balls and Peter Trego 29 off 13, the Outlaws overhauled the Vikings’ 60 for 3 with 20 balls to spare, Hales winning the match by slog-sweeping three sixes in four deliveries off legspinner Josh Poysden. After an 8.45pm start, Yorkshire’s total always looked a little light, especially after opting to bat first in a shortened match. Jordan Thompson made 28 from 19 balls and Adam Lyth 26 off 18, but Dane Paterson took 2 for 5 in his one over, and Samit Patel 1 for 7 from two. The result leaves second-placed Vikings still needing one more point from two matches to be sure of their place in the last eight. The Vikings suffered a big blow at the start when they lost Harry Brook, the competition’s top run scorer with 463, to a third-ball duck, failing to connect as he went down the pitch to Patel and smartly stumped by Tom Moores.Yorkshire managed only 12 runs in the 13-ball Powerplay section of the abbreviated innings and were fortunate not to lose a second wicket as a leaping Hales just failed to grab the ball in the air at mid-on as Thompson went aerial to offspinner Matt Carter. Lyth got things moving with six off a Luke Fletcher full toss and Carter conceded two boundaries in the fourth over but Patel slammed on the brakes, giving away only three runs in the fifth. An expensive over from Fletcher, with three wides, a six by Thompson and two fours added 19 to the total but Lyth was caught at long-on and Thompson at extra cover as Paterson conceded a miserly five runs in the final over. On-loan Sam Northeast made his debut but did not face a ball.By contrast, the Outlaws were off to a flying start, Trego hitting the first two balls sent down by England’s Dom Bess to the rope in an over that cost 18 runs including four boundaries. Hales survived a sharp chance to backward point off Matthew Fisher but then cleared the rope with a superbly executed uppercut, helping the Outlaws to be 29 without loss from the Powerplay.Three more boundaries in the third over from Matthew Waite took the total to 45 before Hales finished the job in style, making light of the absence of Ben Duckett and Joe Clarke from their batting line-up.

Lopetegui must axe West Ham man who earns more than Summerville & Todibo

West Ham United have reached remarkable heights over the past decade.

Under Slaven Bilic, east London enjoyed a taste of something more. Fuelled by the magic of Dimitri Payet, a seventh-placed Premier League finish was achieved. Fleeting success started to ebb away and Bilic was dismissed. His successor, Manuel Pellegrini, failed to produce the same level of result and he was dismissed too.

Slaven Bilic

Then David Moyes came along. West Ham have now won the Conference League and enjoyed several campaigns in continental competitions, but Julen Lopetegui’s start to life in the Irons dugout has left the fans wanting, despite the lucrative summer of spending.

West Ham's summer transfer business

West Ham’s technical director, Tim Steidten, handed Lopetegui £120m worth of first-team talent this summer, with sights set on returning to the top after Moyes’ contract expired.

One win and little inspiration across the opening five Premier League fixtures has been frustrating, but there is indeed an abundance of quality at Lopetegui’s disposal.

Two of the most exciting summer signings have got to be Crysencio Summerville and Jean-Clair Todibo. The former, signed from Leeds United for an undisclosed fee, was the Championship MVP last term after posting 21 goals and ten assists across all competitions.

The £30k-per-week winger has only played a bit-part role for West Ham so far – only starting twice in all competitions – but is starting to grow into his skin and will hope to make a marked impact going forward.

In Todibo’s case, he’s technically still an OGC Nice player after moving to the London Stadium on a one-year loan deal – that said, West Ham have a £35m purchase option that they are expected top activate.

Because of this, the dynamic French defender is still only earning £20k per week, meaning that he’s below one struggling West Ham star in the wage table.

Nice centre-back Jean-Claire Todibo.

Indeed, one man is out-earning both of these talented new arrivals and though it’s not by much, Vladimir Coufal needs to be axed by Lopetegui if he gets another transfer window to determine that.

Why West Ham must axe Vladimir Coufal

Coufal has amassed 160 appearances for West Ham since signing from Slavia Prague for a shrewd £5m figure. He’s been an excellent servant but, aged 32, is on the decline.

West Ham defender Vladimir Coufal

The experienced ace started the opener against Aston Villa this season but flattered to deceive. The Evening Standard’s Dom Smith agreed, branding him with a 4/10 match rating and writing: ‘Caught out of position by coming too centrally, allowing Lucas Digne and John McGinn to exploit the space down the left. And Duran got through late on, too, thanks to Coufal’s poor positioning.’

Since then, he started against Palace but has been restricted to cameos from the bench, playing 19 minutes versus Manchester City, 33 minutes against Fulham and then not even appearing last weekend. So, Lopetegui already doesn’t think he’s good enough.

West Ham defender Vladimir Coufal.

Moreover, the right-back is out of contract at the end of the season, but there cannot be any chance that he renews, given that he has effectively been replaced by Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who has joined from Manchester United.

Coufal is ‘only’ earning £35k per week but is still taking home a prettier pay packet than that of Summerville, highlighting that the young forward will hope to see a refreshed deal, should he succeed in east London.

For Coufal, he’s probably approaching the end of the line at West Ham. The Czech native has been a loyal servant and an instrumental figure in winning the Conference League, but now it might be right for the 32-year-old to move away for pastures new.

With such an eventuality in mind, perhaps West Ham ought to have done more to keep the younger Ben Johnson this summer.

Series on the line as ailing Sri Lanka prepare to face mighty India again

Sri Lanka have lost all but one of their nine completed ODIs this year

Aakash Chopra: Whoever has got an opportunity has impressed

Big pictureLess than 48 hours after India put the finishing touches on their thumping of Sri Lanka in the first ODI, the teams have to go again. If you’re a Sri Lanka fan, hold on tight. This might not be pretty. In many senses, we didn’t really learn much from the first match. It was already known that Sri Lanka lack world-class batters. Although the likes of Avishka Fernando and Bhanuka Rajapaksa struck attractive boundaries, there was no one to hold the innings together. But for No. 8 Chamika Karunaratne’s unbeaten 43 off 35 balls, Sri Lanka may have stumbled to a truly sub-par total. There was also no surprise in Shikhar Dhawan – a modern ODI behemoth – ending up the game’s top scorer. And India’s staggering batting depth was suspected too; their top order expected to flex against a Sri Lanka attack that has some talent but is woefully light on experience and direction. Still, the breathtaking confidence and striking ability of Prithvi Shaw, Ishan Kishan, and later, Suryakumar Yadav would have quickened pulses around the world. On its own, this young top order is a reason to tune in.If Sri Lanka want to push India on Tuesday, there are a giant list of things they must correct. Their inability to rotate the strike against the spinners held them back during the middle overs, as batters played laboured block-or-bash innings; their fielding was poor, with two chances going down on the boundary; and while Dushmantha Chameera was good again with the new ball, they need to find a more reliable seam-bowling partner than Isuru Udana, who was taken apart in the powerplay and bowled only two overs.Form guide (completed matches, most recent first)

India WWLWWIn the spotlightWhile wristspinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav went looking for wickets, Krunal Pandya kept things tight through the middle overs – his left-arm spin going for only 26 runs in 10 overs. In four ODI appearances, this was by far his best bowling performance – he had actually been bashed around by England in March. In that series, Krunal had showed off his hitting ability at ODI level. If he can add stability to India’s spin attack too, he makes a strong case for consistent selection.Dushmantha Chameera didn’t get any wickets on Sunday, and yet, made several India batters uncomfortable with his pace. While Kishan was walloping everyone else, Chameera was the one bowler who seriously tested him, peppering him with short balls. Chameera had been one of Sri Lanka’s few positives from the recent tour of England, and has finally built up some rhythm after years of his career being frustrated by injuries. With the quick turnarounds this series though, Sri Lanka run the risk of him picking up niggles.
