Xavier Marshall axed from USA contracts list

Covid-19 causes drastic cuts in pay, contracts only till end of 2020

Peter Della Penna11-Aug-2020Opening batsman Xavier Marshall is the highest profile casualty from USA Cricket’s newly announced list of central contracts, which are only guaranteed through the end of 2020 instead of a 12-month basis as part of a number of severe cost-cutting measures resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic. According to multiple sources, the remaining eight players have all been given a flat $1800 a month salary, which is a 60-75% pay cut for most players compared to their original contracts from July 2019.”The USA Cricket Board identified that the restructuring of the contracting model around the men’s national team was an important exercise given the unprecedented events of 2020,” said USA Cricket board chairman Paraag Marathe on Monday in a release announcing the new contract list. “We have not played any international cricket since February and we are currently uncertain as to when our next fixtures will be, whilst at the same time we are forecasting a decline in our current and future year revenues as a result of the pandemic.”USA’s players had been the highest paid in the Associate world in the previous contracts list, with the highest tier contracts being “in excess of USD 90,000” as per a press release from USA cricket, while the lowest were believed to have been in the $60,000 range according to multiple sources. However, USA’s squad struggled at times to justify the pay. Despite being heavily favoured, they lost all four matches to Canada and Bermuda at the ICC Americas Regional T20 Qualifier in August 2019 to fall short of advancing to the T20 World Cup Qualifier in Dubai. Most recently, they were swept in four straight ODIs in February by Nepal and Oman before the pandemic disrupted their fixture list.USA has had a home ODI series against Scotland and UAE postponed from April, while another ODI tri-series tour to Namibia to face the hosts and Papua New Guinea in September has also been postponed. USA’s opening round of qualifying due to take place in Canada this August for the next T20 World Cup has also been shelved after the tournament was pushed back to 2022. The Covid-19 infection rate in the country has also contributed to the postponement of the planned launch of the Minor League Cricket T20 franchise competition this summer, and it is unknown when the national team will be able to resume training activities ahead of their next scheduled series for early 2021 in Oman.Marshall had been one of USA’s key performers at 2019 WCL Division Two in Namibia, scoring a century against Hong Kong in a win that clinched ODI status for USA. But his form was inconsistent upon receiving a central contract. He scored 55 runs in five innings at the ICC Americas Regional T20 Qualifier at Bermuda in August 2019. The last straw was USA’s win-less ODI tour of Kathmandu in February where he scored 54 runs in four innings. In all, he averaged just 17.00 in 13 ODIs for USA.Also cut from the contracts list were Timil Patel and Elmore Hutchinson, USA’s two highest wicket-takers in 50-over cricket. Both have played 68 matches in 50-over cricket for USA since their debuts in 2012 with Timil claiming 81 wickets at 21.96 and Hutchinson 68 at 23.34. However, both have had their spots taken by younger men. Karima Gore, 22, has been the lead spinner ahead of the 36-year-old Patel, while Cameron Stevenson, 27, has replaced Hutchinson, who turned 38 on Tuesday.Jessy Singh and Jaskaran Malhotra were the other two players slashed from the list. Singh has since been drafted by Guyana Amazon Warriors to take part in CPL 2020.Though USA captain Saurabh Netravalkar was announced as a member of the pared down list of contracted players to nine, multiple sources have confirmed he is technically not included among the contracted players being compensated by USA Cricket and ACE. Netravalkar works full-time as a software developer for Oracle in San Francisco, California. His work visa status does not allow him to take official employment with other organisations outside of Oracle.USA central contract list: Aaron Jones, Monank Patel, Steven Taylor, Karima Gore, Akshay Homraj, Nosthush Kenjige, Nisarg Patel and Rusty Theron.

Wolves struck gold on "incredible" star who’s worth as much as Ait-Nouri

One of the surprise packages of the Premier League so far this season has been Wolves. Gary O’Neil’s side were tipped to get relegated at the start of the season by many, but have proved doubters wrong and now find themselves in 11th on 46 points, just three points behind eighth-place West Ham.

This impressive season came after losing two of their best players in the summer window last season. Ruben Neves left Molineux to join Saudi side Al-Hilal for £47m, before Manchester City bought Portugal international midfielder Matheus Nunes for £53m at the end of the window. That deal was a record sale for Wolves, which broke that of the Neves deal.

O’Neil’s side have also struggled with injuries at times this season, to two key players in particular. Pedro Neto is currently on the sidelines for the second time this season and has missed 20 games up to now. Matheus Cunha pulled his hamstring in February and missed several months of the season.

With those sales and injuries being a potential stumbling block for Wolves, it is fair to say they have handled it very well, and to be 11th in the table is impressive.

They have also had a couple of standout stars, including Rayan Ait-Nouri, who has become integral to the side, and another defender, whose emergence has seen him make his international debut this season.

Toti Gomes’ season in numbers

The man in question here is Portuguese defender Toti Gomes. The 25-year-old defender joined Wolves from Estoril Praia in Portugal in 2020, before going out on loan to Swiss side Grasshoppers. It was a deal worth a measly total of £900k, according to journalist Nathan Judah.

This season, Toti has been immense for Wolves and has become a key player under O’Neil. The Portugal international has played 39 times in all competitions, with 32 of those appearances coming in the Premier League. Captain Max Kilman is the only Wolves player with more games under his belt this season.

According to Sofascore, Toti has been a part of four clean sheets for Wolves in the Premier League this season. The left-footer, who has also played left-back, is a wonderful defender, and he averages four ball recoveries per 90 minutes and wins a total of 3.9 duels per game.

Wolverhampton Wanderers centre-back Toti Gomes.

His superb performances this season led the 25-year-old to be rewarded with his international debut for Portugal. He made his first appearance for the national team on the 16th of November 2023, against Liechtenstein, with his second cap coming on the 21st of March 2024, against Sweden.

Toti’s transfer value in 2024

The aforementioned £900k that Wolves initially spent on Toti has certainly proven to be a good investment so far, and not only because he has become a key player for O’Neil’s side this term.

Toti has seen his value soar in recent months, and, according to CIES Football Observatory, he is now worth £34m, a staggering increase of 3,677%. Indeed, there is only one player at Molineux currently more valuable than the 25-year-old, £42.7m Cunha, and two players of equal value to Toti, in Ait-Nouri and Joao Gomes.

The Wolves manager certainly believes that the Portugal international’s value is justified, explaining in January that he believes his performances in the Premier League have been “incredible”, given the “money the club spent on him”. This is reflected in his decision to play Toti in the majority of his side’s games throughout 2023/24.

Wolves fans do not need to worry about Toti leaving the club any time soon, given the 6 foot 2 defender has just signed a new five-year deal to stay at Molineux until the end of the 2029 season. With no rumoured release clause, the 25-year-old does not seem likely to leave Wolves anytime soon.

AC Milan has repeatedly ventured into the fashion market in recent years, releasing crossovers with brands such as Off White and Arena. And on Monday, it unveiled its latest high profile fashion pursuit, announcing a collaboration with Major League Baseball's New York Yankees. Both teams have investors from U.S. based RedBird Capital Partners – leaving ample room for partnerships on such collections.

The collection includes varsity jackets, hoodies, t-shirts, and New Era caps, all adorned with a new logo that merges the crests of Milan and the Yankees.

Milan CEO Giorgio Furlani explained the reasoning behind the line in an official statement: "The entirety of this collaboration is an homage to the transcendent impact that the cities of Milan and New York maintain on fashion and culture around the world, and we are eager to see that cross-cultural spirit reflected as people enjoy the collection.”

Yankees President Randy Levine echoed that sentiment: "The New York Yankees and AC Milan are each synonymous with their respective sports and cities.

Man Utd eyeing Declan Rice clone who would "thrive" with Mainoo

The 2023/24 season has been a frustrating campaign for Manchester United. They currently sit in sixth in the Premier League table and are mathematically unable to qualify for the Champions League next season.

In Europe, their misery continued, with the Red Devils getting eliminated from the Champions League in record-breaking fashion. As per Opta Joe, the 15 goals they conceded on the way to bottom of the group elimination was the most goals a Premier League side has ever conceded in the group stage.

Coping with injury issues has been a struggle for Erik ten Hag's side this season, and they have had over 60 separate cases of injury and illness throughout the course of the entire campaign. With that being said, their tough season can not be solely blamed on that.

New signings such as Rasmus Hojlund and Andre Onana have taken time to bed into the squad, and the likes of Marcus Rashford and Casemiro have not had the easiest season of their career.

Manchester United midfielder Casemiro.

According to reports, Brazil captain Casemiro is one man who could leave Old Trafford this summer. The 32-year-old, who joined the club in August 2022 from Real Madrid for £70m, could well be set to leave Old Trafford at the end of the season, with United already thought to be eyeing up a replacement.

Man Utd looking to sign Dutch midfielder

The player in question here is Feyenoord and Netherlands international midfielder Mats Wieffer. The 24-year-old has been linked with a move away from Feyenoord this summer, with a whole host of elite European clubs rumoured to be interested.

According to reports in Spain, United are one of five sides said to be chasing Wieffer’s signature next summer, which includes Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle and Liverpool.

Indeed, this may be a deal that is easiest for Liverpool to do; their new head coach is set to be Wieffer’s current manager at Feyenoord, Arne Slot, who will take over from Jurgen Klopp at the end of the season.

Feyenoord manager Arne Slot

The Netherlands international, who has nine caps and one goal for his country, has become a key player under Slot this season. He has made 29 Eredivisie appearances so far, scoring five times and registering three assists, as well as notching up two goal involvements in the Champions League, in six appearances.

Despite the fact that Liverpool could well be favourites to secure Wieffer’s signature, United are likely to still pursue a deal for the midfielder, who is set to cost much more than the £512k Feyenoord paid for him in the first place.

Why Wieffer would be a good signing

Should United manage to sign Wieffer, the in-demand talent might be the perfect replacement for Casemiro. Not only that, he could also be the perfect partner in midfield for Kobbie Mainoo, and the pair could form a midfield partnership for many years to come.

The former Excelsior man was described as having "shades of Declan Rice" on X by football Analyst H, before explaining the way he uses his “long legs in duels and when covering ground” is similar to the England international.

This is certainly reflected in Wieffer’s stats, with the midfield machine's numbers off the ball impressive. According to Fbref, he makes 4.56 tackles and interceptions per 90 minutes, which places him in the top 7% of midfielders and makes 7.46 ball recoveries per 90 minutes, which ranks him in the top 14%.

Feyenoord midfielderMats Wieffer.

Standing at 6 foot 2 also means that Wieffer is good in the air, and he averages 3.05 aerial duels won per 90 minutes, which ranks him in the top 2% of midfielders in Europe. Not only that, the Dutchman’s average aerial duel win rate of 62.2% is among the best in Europe, ranking him in the top 9%.

Whilst he is wonderful out of possession, Wieffer is also a progressive player on the ball. He averages 7.77 progressive passes per 90 minutes, which ranks him in the top 7%, and 6.77 passes into the final third per 90 minutes, which ranks him in the top 8%.

Having a ball-winner in the centre of midfield who can then progress play forwards would certainly be a breath of fresh air for United since it is something that Casmeiro can struggle with at times. Whilst the Brazilian can be effective as a ball-winner, he averages just 6.02 progressive passes per 90 minutes, which ranks him in the bottom 24%, as per Fbref.

Another post by H over on X explains how Wieffer and Mainoo would “thrive” together in midfield. Indeed, Mainoo is certainly not best utilised as a sitting midfielder, but as someone who has a licence to get forward and impact the game in the final third, as shown by his two goals this season. Having Wieffer sitting in front of the back four, spraying passes to help kick-start United’s attack gives Mainoo that aforementioned licence to get forward.

The 19-year-old is a super ball carrier, which compliments the skillset of Wieffer excellently. In fact, Mainoo averages 2.43 attempted take-ons per 90 minutes and 1.27 successful take-ons per 90 minutes, which, as per Fbref, ranks him in the top 14% of midfielders in Europe this season.

There is little doubt that Mainoo and Wieffer would come together to make a hugely complimentary midfield pairing for United. They are both progressive players in possession, and both good ball-winners, although Wieffer’s ability to screen the defence allows Mainoo to get forward and impact the game in the final third.

Not only that, they have age on their side. Mainoo is just 19, and Wieffer is just 24. In theory, they could be lining up together in United’s midfield for the next decade, a mouth-watering prospect for United fans.

INEOS can seal Man Utd masterclass with "extraordinary" Casemiro upgrade

This is a deal that certainly makes sense for the Red Devils to get over the line. Whilst Wieffer’s price is unclear at the moment, it seems a very smart investment and will massively improve their team both in possession and out of possession, whilst also bringing the best out of Mainoo.

Liverpool now eyeing move to sign "energetic" 18 y/o sensation for Slot

As Liverpool move closer and closer to bidding a final farewell to Jurgen Klopp, Michael Edwards has turned his attention to the future and potentially landing a fresh new face for Arne Slot.

Liverpool transfer news

It's the end of an era at Anfield, with a new manager set to enter Anfield for the first time in almost a decade. Reports indicate that it's almost certain to be Slot at this stage, with the Feyenoord boss tasked with filling quite the void in Merseyside and writing a new chapter full of even greater success. And the transfer window should help the Dutchman as he looks to make his mark.

With that said, the likes of Crysencio Summerville and Real Madrid's Rodrygo have already started to steal the headlines, as the Reds gear up for a potential summer to remember in which Edwards welcomes some statement signings. Reports also suggest that he's got one eye on the future, however.

FSG are right to ditch Liverpool flop who earns more than Trent

Liverpool’s third-highest earner is set to never play for the club again.

ByJoe Nuttall May 16, 2024

According to Caught Offside, Liverpool are eyeing a move to sign Malick Junior Yalcouye alongside Gent, Ajax, Brentford, and PSV Eindhoven. The IFK Goteborg central midfielder already has first-team experience to his name at just 18 years old and could now earn a deserved move to one of Europe's top leagues in the coming months.

Given that Yalcouye only moved to Gothenburg in February, negotiating an exit may prove difficult, but a club of Liverpool's stature could tempt all parties into sealing a summer switch to hand Slot a future star

"Energetic" Yalcouye can follow Elliott path

If Slot picks up where Klopp has left off, then utilising young players will play a crucial part in any success that the Dutchman enjoys. In Klopp's final season, Anfield has seen the likes of Jarell Quansah, Conor Bradley and Jayden Danns, among others, all receive opportunities in what could be a sign of things to come even as the German departs.

Now, Yalcouye could follow that path and the one set by Harvey Elliott, who has become a key figure at the heart of Liverpool's midfield. Positions may be up for grabs more than they have been for almost a decade too, given that there's a new manager to impress and new system to slot into in the coming months. And the Goteborg midfielder is certainly rated enough to earn a place, with Bence Bocsak describing the young Ivorian as "energetic".

Whilst the race may be busy for Yalcouye's signature, Liverpool's place in the Premier League and Champions League should leave them in good stead to land the teenager this summer.

Tim Ambrose announces retirement at end of 2020 season

Tim Ambrose, the Warwickshire wicketkeeper, has announced that he will retire from professional cricket at the end of the 2020 season.Ambrose, who will turn 38 in December, has played more than 500 professional games across his career, including 11 Tests and six limited-overs internationals for England.Born in New South Wales, Ambrose’s British passport opened up a route into county cricket which he took up as a 17-year-old when he joined Sussex. He faced a battle with Matt Prior to be the club’s first-choice wicketkeeper, and regularly managed to displace him from the side, but left for Warwickshire at the end of the 2005 season to secure first-team cricket.Following a prolific 2007 season, England’s selectors took notice and included him in the Test squad for the winter tour of New Zealand. He looked like a long-term option as England’s wicketkeeper when he made a doughty half-century on debut in Hamilton and followed it up with 102 in his second Test, but he was overtaken by Prior and returned to the county ranks.ALSO READ: Warwickshire size up move for Bess as Patel successorHis form dipped significantly in 2010, a season in which he later revealed he had been suffering from depression, but Warwickshire kept him on, and he played a vital role in their title two years later. “It is a difficult thing to accept as I would love to play another 20 years if it was at all possible but it is the right time for this talented, energetic and ambitious young squad to move forward and make their own mark. I have always tried to put the club and the team first and to not make this decision now would go against that.”I have too many people to thank but would like to take this opportunity to thank the Club, the members and the supporters, many of whom have shared in my experiences; like the gentleman who said “keep going Tim we’re all behind you” as I lumbered up the steps after getting out softly for another low score in 2010.”I later understood I was in a spell of depression at that time, but that man’s voice cut through the haze and white noise in my head and that small gesture of encouragement from an anonymous supporter was a genuine motivator for me to return to Warwickshire and repay the people who believed in me.”Paul Farbrace, Warwickshire’s sport director, said: “Tim has been one of the great wicketkeeper-batsmen of the modern game and he will retire at the end of this year as a true Warwickshire legend.”He’s a model professional and, by playing out the 2020 season, we will ensure that he has a very fitting farewell before he moves on to his next challenge. We thank him for his outstanding efforts for Warwickshire CCC and wish him the very best for this upcoming 2020 season and in his future career.”
