Tottenham approve exit for "excellent" attacker as Levy awaits bidding war

Tottenham Hotspur have decided to sanction an exit this summer, with chairman Daniel Levy and co anticipating a bidding war for the player’s services.

Tottenham are also open to selling Richarlison this summer, following a season ravaged by injury, with the Brazilian failing to make his mark under Postecoglou as a result. Everton are also rumoured to be weighing up a swoop for their former striker this summer, and Levy is prepared to sell Richarlison for around ÂŁ40 million (GiveMeSport).

Even Spurs captain Son Heung-min has been linked with an exit at the end of this season, despite the club recently electing to extend the winger’s deal by an additional 12 months, so Postecoglou’s side could look very different by the start of 2025/2026.

Amid his excellent loan spell at Leeds United, questions will be asked about the future of winger Manor Solomon.

The Israeli international joined Tottenham on a free transfer in 2023, but his debut campaign at N17 was overshadowed by long-term injuries. Levy gave the green-light for Solomon to join Leeds on a temporary deal, and he hasn’t looked back since.

As per GiveMeSport, Leeds won’t be the only contenders for his services. Indeed, it is claimed Everton and Southampton are also expressing an interest in the winger, with Levy anticipating a bidding war for Solomon’s signature at Tottenham. His price tag is currently set at ÂŁ15 million, but Spurs are confident they could demand even more, especially considering the growing clamour for Solomon’s services this summer.

Tottenham are prepared to sanction the ex-Fulham star’s exit as a result, with the north Londoners set to make a pure profit off his potential sale as well.

His value has risen by ÂŁ87m: Newcastle struck gold on "world-class" star

Newcastle United have enjoyed life under Eddie Howe, recently reaching their second cup final in three years, with a Champions League campaign sandwiched in between.

More importantly, the Magpies have risen from the Premier League’s lower rabble to become a genuine force, pushing for a top-four finish and a sustained seat at Europe’s pre-eminent table.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe and Bruno Guimaraes celebrate after the match

While there has been PSR-related transfer frustration recently, it’s hard to argue against the success of Howe’s market strategy since joining the Tynesiders.

Howe's best Newcastle signings

Anthony Gordon arrived on Tyneside with plenty of detractors, but after claiming Newcastle’s Player of the Year award for 2023/24 and carrying his form into the current campaign, he and his manager’s decision have been vindicated.

Anthony Gordon celebrates for Newcastle

Before that, Bruno Guimaraes’ arrival from Lyon was one of the major watershed events, with the Brazil midfielder now considered one of the best in the business, worth ÂŁ100m and coveted by Manchester City in January.

Certainly, not all of Newcastle’s transfer triumphs have been the big-money buys. Dan Burn was one of the first to join the project, leaving Brighton for his boyhood club in a deal worth just ÂŁ13m. The value for money has been immense.

However, perhaps obviously, Newcastle’s most emphatic and significant acquisition over the past several years has got to be that of the club-record man.

Howe's best Newcastle signing

You know who. Alexander Isak has been regarded as one of Europe’s most promising forwards since his days as a peripheral member at Borussia Dortmund, but ever since leaving Real Sociedad and joining Newcastle in a ÂŁ63m package, he’s gone from strength to strength.

Earlier this season, Magpies legend Alan Shearer hailed the Sweden international as a “world-class assassin” in front of goal and it’s clear to see why.

He’s coming into his own. Across all competitions in 2024/25, Isak has scored 19 goals and supplied five more assists across 28 matches, instrumental beyond league football – for example, dominating Arsenal over two legs to reach the final of the Carabao Cup.

Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah is the only player to have scored 5+ goals at a faster rate this season, with Jamie Carragher piling onto the praise to dub Isak as “the best striker in the Premier League.”

When Newcastle paid ÂŁ63m for this young and relatively untested centre-forward, you’d be forgiven for saying it was a gamble. But it’s paid off – handsomely.

Alexander Isak scores for Newcastle

While rumours of Isak’s sale persist, it would take suitors such as Arsenal to break the bank, with the 25-year-old understood to have a market value in excess of ÂŁ150m, as reported by The Telegraph, which would make him the most expensive player in English football history, were he to be transferred this summer.

Let’s hope that he remains at St. James’ Park for many years to come, but if he is to go, Newcastle have well and truly hit the jackpot on their club-record signing, remarkably set to bank an ÂŁ87m profit.

This would placate PSR, for sure. And then, with Howe’s track record in the market, it feels like the reinvestment could actually sustain Newcastle’s new-found position of prominence for many years to come.

Maresca already has a huge Amougou upgrade & he’s never played for Chelsea

Chelsea are looking rather light in the midfield department, with Roméo Lavia continuing to suffer from injuries, both Cesare Casadei and Renato Veiga leaving in the January window and multiple other midfielders out on loan.

This has seen Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernández starting almost every game, with many beginning to question their workload, scared of the pair becoming jaded and picking up an injury.

Luckily, on deadline day, Enzo Maresca’s side did manage to make one midfield signing, with Mathis Amougou joining from St Etienne for a fee of around £12.5m.

But this late scramble could’ve been avoided had Chelsea recalled one of their two central midfielders out on loan, both of whom have shown signs of capability in a similar role.

Lesley Ugochukwu is one of them but he’s not the only one. Stay tuned…

How Lesley Ugochukwu is doing at Southampton

Ugochukwu is one of the Chelsea midfielders out on loan this season. Having joined Southampton on a temporary basis in the summer, the 20-year-old has made 18 appearances in all competitions, providing two assists, contributing to three clean sheets and totalling 1,029 minutes played.

Impressively, the French midfielder has been compared to Aurelien Tchouameni’s level of potential, by Liam Twomey from The Athletic, standing at 6 foot 3, covering ground in central areas really well, making high numbers of defensive actions – 3.86 tackles per 90 – and being technically astute on the ball to receive in tight spaces.

Southampton's Mateus Fernandes,TylerDibling, Lesley Ugochukwu and Yukinari Sugawara celebrates their first goal

Despite having Ugochukwu as one option to bring back from loan, Southampton’s change in manager (Ivan Juric) saw the French midfielder given more minutes, meaning the Blues decided to keep him at Southampton for the remainder of the season in order to aid his development.

But there was another midfield option out on loan who could have returned to have a huge impact at Chelsea.

How Andrey Santos compares to Mathis Amougou

Perhaps the crown jewel of young talents acquired by Chelsea and sent out on loan for multiple seasons, is Brazilian midfielder, Andrey Santos. He’s not played a single minute for the Blues yet, consequently spending the past year at Strasbourg on loan.

Ligue 1 stats only.

Across all competitions, the 20-year-old star has been “immense” in the words of analyst Ben Mattinson. He has made 20 appearances so far this season for the French outfit, scoring eight goals, providing two assists, contributing to four clean sheets and featuring for a total of 1,764 minutes.

When comparing Santos’s underlying numbers with Chelsea’s new midfield signing – interestingly both playing in Ligue 1 this season – you can see how far ahead Santos currently is with his game, being more comfortable on the ball, making more passes, more progressive actions and completing more defensive actions per 90 too.

Santos has been described as a “one-man war machine” by Jacek Kulig in the past, being well known for being an all-action midfielder, who contributes in all phases, can drop deep to link play, protect the backline in defensive transition, get stuck in to win duels, but also arrive in the box and add goals for the team.

Whilst Ugochukwu and Santos would have been more ready to contribute now, Chelsea have clearly taken the route of allowing them to complete their loan cycles, continue their development with consistent minutes, before rejoining the squad next season, when Amougou will likely receive a loan to aid his development in a similar way.

Northern Superchargers 135 for 8 beat Southern Brave 119 for 9 (Ahmed 33, Parnell 4-18) by 16 runsSouthern Brave’s disappointing title defence in the men’s Hundred ended with a whimper as they failed to chase 136 in a dead-rubber defeat against Northern Superchargers at Headingley. Both teams, out of finals contention before a ball was bowled here, should have performed better with the bat on a pitch which was tired but not disastrously so.England’s Harry Brook top-scored with 29 for Superchargers, who were inserted by the reigning champions and made 135 for 8. Fledgling legspinner Rehan Ahmed and seamer James Fuller each finished with 2 for 20.In reply, Brave slumped to 34 for 4 in 26 balls and failed to recover. In posting 119 for 9, they suffered a fifth defeat in eight – this one by 16 runs.Ahmed continued his impressive day with 33, but South African left-arm quick Wayne Parnell’s outstanding four for 16 ensured the Superchargers finish with a fourth win added to as many defeats. After a breezy start, Superchargers were checked by the varied spin of legspinner Ahmed, offie Paul Stirling and left-arm wristspinner Jake Lintott. The latter two struck once apiece. Three of their top four all reached 20 and failed to go on.After the early departure of captain Faf du Plessis to Ahmed, caught by mid-on running around towards mid-off, his opening partner Adam Lyth made 20, David Willey reached 22 and Brook with his aforementioned 29. But all holed out to catches in the deep as the score fell to 91 for 4 after 67 balls.Callum Parkinson celebrates the wicket of James Vince•Getty Images

Seamer Sonny Baker had Lyth caught at deep midwicket off a top-edge and Brook caught in the same position pulling before Ahmed struck again when Adam Hose found long-on.Michael Pepper, David Wiese and Parnell all made it into double figures and threatened late acceleration, though Brave were as clinical with the ball and in the field as they were so often last year and not enough this. Seamer Fuller removed Wiese and Rashid in the penultimate set of five – again to catches in the deep.In many ways, this Brave performance was a microcosm of this season’s campaign: inconsistent. After being polished with the ball and in the field, they were all over the place with the bat in the early stages of their reply, losing some serious firepower in the first 26 balls.Related

Quinton de Kock was run out trying to take a suicidal single to short fine-leg before Parnell’s left-arm seam accounted for Stirling and Alex Davies. Left-arm spinner Callum Parkinson then bowled captain James Vince. From 34 for 4, Ahmed and Ross Whiteley steadied with a partnership of 27.However, when the latter miscued Adil Rashid’s legspin to long-on, leaving the score at 61 for 5 after 49 balls, it felt a decisive juncture. So it proved: big-hitting Singaporean Tim David drilled Wiese to long-off shortly afterwards. The feewheeling Ahmed continued his impressive day, and a turnaround was on the cards when he shared 28 in 16 balls with Fuller, both hitting strong shots down the ground. But when Ahmed miscued Parnell to long-on, leaving the score at 104 for 7 after 83 balls, 32 runs were still required. That target became 26 off 10, and it was all but game over when Parnell yorked Fuller for 25 to leave 22 still needed off six. Willey closed things out by bowling Baker, even celebrating with a forward roll.

Liverpool in pole position to sign "unique" ÂŁ30k-p/w star with Hughes key

Liverpool are now ahead of Manchester United in the race to sign a Premier League star in the months ahead, a fresh report has revealed, with the star making Anfield his preferred destination.

Liverpool's Premier League lead cut

A 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest at the City Ground saw Liverpool lose ground in the Premier League title race, with Arsenal’s north London derby win cutting their lead to four points at the top, though that could extend to seven points should they win the rearranged Merseyside derby next month.

Having already qualified for the next stage of the Champions League too, it is has been a monumentally successful first half a season in charge for Arne Slot, who has tasted defeat just twice across all competitions and whose side have scored the most goals in the Premier League while conceding just once in six Champions League games.

Liverpool can forget Zubimendi by signing one of the best DMs on the planet

Liverpool are reportedly interested in a swoop for the Real Madrid midfielder.

ByDan Emery Jan 15, 2025

Despite this, there is longer term concern at the club with all of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold becoming free agents this summer as things stand and set to rob Liverpool of three of their key men should they not agree new deals.

They have already begun planning for the future in some areas, with Giorgi Mamardashvili being signed last summer to join the club in 2025 from Valencia, but there will need to be more additions across the frontline, in midfield and in defence in the windows ahead to rebuild what is becoming an increasingly ageing squad in places.

One area that Liverpool will undoubtedly need to bolster is left-back, where Andy Robertson is beginning to show his age and Kostas Tsimikas is offering litttle challenge to his place in the team on a weekly basis. Now, they have been handed a massive boost in their hunt for a replacement.

Liverpool in pole position to land Premier League defender

That is according to iNews, who report that Liverpool have moved into pole position to sign Hungarian defender Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth.

The full-back, dubbed as a player with a “unique skillset” by former teammate Mathew Ryan, has caught the eye with a series of excellent performances for Andoni Iraola’s high flying Cherries.

It has sparked serious interest in him from across the Premier League, and the report claims that Liverpool have the advantage over their rivals, with Kerkez preferring the idea of an Anfield switch.

“Liverpool, City and United have already started to make contact with the player’s representatives, but it is understood the 21-year-old favours a move to Anfield over the Manchester clubs,” the report reveals.

Bournemouth'sMilosKerkezin action with Crystal Palace's Will Hughes

As for why, Liverpool have to look no further than their Sporting Director Richard Hughes, who was responsible for signing Kerkez for Bournemouth and who “is understood to play a major part in the Hungary international’s thinking”.

So far, there have “been no concrete proposals”, but it is added that “offers in the region of ÂŁ50m is where they are understood to be willing to do business” having already signed Kerkez’s long-term replacement this month despite the Hungarian still having three and a half years left to run on his ÂŁ30,000 a week deal at the Vitality Stadium.

West Ham want to sign PL player who’d be Potter’s dream Paqueta replacement

Graham Potter has been hired as the new West Ham United manager, following the dismissal of Julen Lopetegui, after a poor start to the 2024/25 Premier League season left the Hammers 14th after 20 games played.

One area that West Ham have struggled in so far this season is the middle of the park, lacking mobility to cover ground, often leaving big gaps between their two lines of pressure, with the midfield either too deep to help the forward line, or too advanced, making them unable to recover the large distances.

This has had a negative effect on their off-ball principles, leading to 2024 being their worst defensive year since 1967.

West Ham conceded 79 goals in 2024, the most in the Premier League during that calendar year. This alone could be enough for Potter to ask for reinforcement in central areas, in order to change their out-of-possession principles and improve those numbers.

The midfielder West Ham could sign

According to reports from The Daily Mail, West Ham are interested in out-of-favour Chelsea star, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. According to the report, Potter wants to strengthen his midfield options in January, and the Chelsea man could be a perfect way to do so.

With the 26-year-old only joining the Blues this summer for a fee of around ÂŁ30m, Chelsea look like they are already willing to let Dewsbury-Hall leave the club, having fallen behind in the pecking order to multiple midfielders in Maresca’s plans.

The former Leicester ace has made 15 appearances in all competitions so far this season, scoring two goals, providing one assist and totalling 857 minutes played.

Dewsbury-Hall vs Paqueta comparison

Lucas Paqueta has been subject to criticism this season, making 21 appearances, scoring three goals and totalling 1,440 minutes so far.

But the main sources of criticism have come due to his lack of assists (0) in comparison to the number of times the Brazilian gives the ball away per game.

Dewsbury-Hall, whilst having an expansive passing range, will keep it simple in order to retain possession, and could therefore offer Potter another midfield option to keep things tidy and help the functionality of his side.

When comparing their metrics from this season, you have to take into account that the Chelsea ace has played the majority of his minutes in the UEFA Conference League, in comparison to the Brazilian who has played the majority of his minutes in the Premier League.

Having said that, Dewsbury-Hall is outperforming the Irons star in many metrics, providing more progressive carries per 90, more shot-creating actions and more expected assists (xAG), whilst still offering the work-rate and mobility desired in midfield.

Whilst Paqueta is seen as the bigger talent between the two, the simplicity that Dewsbury-Hall could add to their midfield, along with that extra mobility needed and hard-working mentality, allowing Potter to implement new out-of-possession ideas at a faster rate, hopefully allowing the Hammers to get some points on the board.

Arsenal contacted by reps of "fearless" ÂŁ300k-a-week Premier League star

Arsenal have now been contacted by the agents of a “fearless” Premier League player, according to a report.

Arsenal in need of a forward

The Gunners’ title hopes were dealt a significant blow with the news they will be without Bukayo Saka for the foreseeable future, with Mikel Arteta recently dropping an update on how long he expects his star player to be sidelined for:

As such, if Arteta’s side are to maintain their push for the Premier League title, the manager may need to enter the market for some new attacking reinforcements in January, and he has a number of targets in mind.

The north London club are said to hold a concrete interest in Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha, who has had an excellent first half of the season, bagging 10 goals in the Premier League.

Cunha is not the only Premier League forward Arsenal are looking at, however, with Football Transfers confirming they have been considering a move for Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford, who is expected to leave his boyhood club this month.

Arsenal contact club over signing ÂŁ50m striker amid new contract standoff

The Gunners are ready to take advantage.

ByEmilio Galantini Dec 31, 2024

In fact, Rashford’s agents have already made contact with the Gunners to explore the possibility of him moving to the Emirates Stadium, and the Gunners are considering him as a permanent option.

A loan move would be completely off limits, however, and a lot of things would need to fall into place to get a deal over the line, such as Raheem Sterling returning to Chelsea to create room in the squad. Arsenal are not willing to shell out more than ÂŁ25m to get a deal done, as on current form he would only be deemed good enough to be a squad player, which he would need to accept.

Rashford could reignite his career at Arsenal

Things have not worked out for the ÂŁ300k-per-week forward over the past couple of seasons, with his goal returns in the Premier League slowly diminishing since a solid 2018-19 campaign:

The Englishman clearly needs a fresh start in order to get his career back on track, and if he is able to recapture his form from the 2022-23 campaign, then he could be an excellent signing for Arsenal.

Manchester United's MarcusRashfordwarms up as a substitute during the match

That said, a move does not seem like a likely scenario, seeing as the Gunners are unwilling to shell out more than ÂŁ25m, half the amount of the widely publicised ÂŁ50m asking price.

Rashford can be “fearless” when he’s at his best, but it could be a risk to splash the cash on him given his form this season, so the Gunners should wait and see if United drop their asking price as the transfer window progresses.

Tottenham in pole position to sign "complete" ÂŁ25m centre-back in January

Tottenham Hotspur are now seen as the major contenders to sign a “complete” centre-back in January, with Ange Postecoglou’s side entering pole position to acquire his services as we quickly move towards the winter window.

Spurs target new central defender for Postecoglou amid injury crisis

Spurs links to new central defenders carry on emerging at a very consistent rate ahead of January, coming as the Lilywhites contend without Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Ben Davies, who are all sidelined due to injury.

ÂŁ41m centre-back now open to leaving club after Tottenham express interest

Spurs need new defensive options.

ByEmilio Galantini Dec 21, 2024

Postecoglou has just Radu Dragusin and a makeshift Archie Gray as his centre-back pairing right now, and this has reportedly motivated technical director Johan Lange to dip into the market for reinforcements mid-season.

A number of astute defensive options have been linked via the media in the build up to next month, with Feyenoord’s David Hancko, RC Lens starlet Abdukodir Khusanov, Getafe mainstay Omar Alderete and Inter Milan defender Yann Bisseck all mentioned as potential targets.

Hancko is open to leaving Feyenoord amid Spurs’ interest, while it is believed Postecoglou’s side have made an approach for Khusanov, as Lens instruct super-agent Jorge Mendes to find him a new club.

There are some suggestions that Tottenham have held talks over a move for Alderete already, but this is yet to gain traction in the national media, even if the Paraguay international is available for a very doable ÂŁ13 million – the value of his release clause.

Meanwhile, CaughtOffside believe that Spurs are considering January bid for Bisseck, who has impressed for Serie A champions Inter since signing for the Nerazzurri from Aarhus.

That being said, the German may not come cheap when taking into account the fact he signed a new deal last month.

Tottenham in pole position to sign Leeds defender Pascal Struijk

Alongside Bissek, another report from CaughtOffside has tipped the north Londoners to make a potential move for Leeds United stalwart Pascal Struijk.

The 25-year-old is a crucial figurehead at the heart of Daniel Farke’s backline as the Whites push for Premier League promotion again this season, which has earned him admiring glances from Spurs, Wolves and Brighton.

However, Tottenham are the team in pole position to sign Struijk right now, with Postecoglou’s side viewed as favourites to secure his signature over both Wolves and the Seagulls. Leeds will want around ÂŁ25 million to sell the defender in January, but that price could be worth considering.

Journalist Suleyman Ozturk, speaking to Voetbal Zone, urged Spurs to make a move for Struijk as far back as last year – claiming he is the “best” defender in England’s second tier and a “complete” player.

“He is a complete and mature defender,” said Ozturk in November 2023. “Now that Micky van de Ven has been injured, I would like to give Ange Postecoglou some advice: Struijk can easily join the defence of Tottenham Hotspur.

“That boy really plays at too low a level. I can well imagine that a big club will come for him in January. He really is the best defender in the Championship at the moment.

“I think he will make that step, because getting into the Dutch selection from the second level is difficult. I really think he’s great.”
