Liverpool could rue selling "relentless" ace who may be better than Kerkez

Liverpool are heading toward a critical juncture.

Arne Slot’s side are way ahead at the top of the Premier League having also reached the Carabao Cup final. A meeting with Newcastle United at Wembley looms large.

But FSG know their Dutch head coach’s lightning-fast start to life in Jurgen Klopp’s seat will only be preserved through calculated investment this summer.

There’s still hope Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah will extend their deals, though there’s a sense of resignation that Trent Alexander-Arnold may have been tempted by Real Madrid.

While each of these superstars’ positions will need to be filled if they leave, Liverpool also have several other priorities, with Darwin Nunez likely to be sold this summer and a high-class forward needed in his stead.

He’s not the only one, though, with the left side of defence also in desperate need of renovation. Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez has been picked as the man for the job, it seems.

Liverpool's interest in Milos Kerkez

Anfield’s left-back berth has required very little attention over the past eight years, with Andy Robertson ruling supreme and Kostas Tsimikas joining from Olympiakos in 2020 to add depth.

Andy Robertson in action for Liverpool

However, neither is performing to the highest standard in Slot’s system. Robertson turned 31 this week and is suffering after so many full-throttle years under Klopp’s wing.

Kerkez, 21, is the full package and the perfect long-term solution.

With the Daily Mail reporting Liverpool’s interest is already in the advanced stage, there’s plenty to get excited about. The Hungarian’s pace and energy down the left is perfect for Slot’s high-energy and technically-shaped team.

Indeed, he’s scored two goals and provided five assists across 28 Premier League matches this term, as per Sofascore, also completing 81% of his passes and averaging 4.7 ball recoveries per game.

Milos Kerkez for Bournemouth

All this said, Liverpool run the risk of losing Trent this summer and will then need to target full-backs on either side to bring Slot’s vision to fruition.

It’s a shame the perfect rising defender has already been offloaded, for he is thriving in England’s top flight this year and is maybe even outperforming Kerkez.

Liverpool may regret selling "relentless" PL star

Through the genius of Alexander-Arnold, Liverpool fans have been reminded of the joy in witnessing one of your own emerge from the academy and make a marked impact over a number of years.

Liverpool'sTrentAlexander-Arnoldapplauds fans after the match

Oftentimes, promising prospects fall by the wayside at their first club, but many go on to forge impressive careers. Neco Williams is one such player, having found his feet and then some at Nottingham Forest.

Hindsight always portrays a different picture, and few – if any – of a Liverpool persuasion felt the £17m fee that FSG claimed when Forest purchased full-back Williams was anything other than a bona fide success.

And, in fairness, it still is, though Nuno Espirito Santo has pulled every ounce of ability from this product of the Kirkby talent factory, a core part of the high-flying Tricky Trees’ campaign.

Williams is reaching the end of his second season at the City Ground, and having played 18 times from the outset last year, he’s already equalled that number this season with two months still to be played.

Nuno hailed his team’s “ruthless” ability in front of goal during January’s 7-0 demolition of Brighton, Williams among the scorers. He’s complete in his approach, with such performances surely not unworthy of a spot in Slot’s squad.

The current term may not convey the most awe-inspiring of playmaking metrics but it’s important to remember Williams is moonlighting on the wrong side of the pitch. Even so, the right-footer has excelled as his team defy expectation to challenge for a place in next season’s Champions League, something they are firmly on course for as we enter the business end.

In spite of this, the Welshman has still managed to showcase his athleticism and ball-carrying approach, all the while maintaining a steely defensive game. As per Sofascore, he’s won a whopping 60% of his duels this season, battling against right wingers such as Salah.

It’s perhaps also worth noting Williams has averaged a dribble every two Premier League matches this season, whereas Kerkez, despite what you may think, records 0.6 dribbles per top-flight fixture in 2024/25.

Statistics only tell so much of a story. Forest have held the least possession of any side in the Premier League, and yet are flying high at the top. This is why Williams’ ball-carrying and playmaking numbers are down, but even so, you can see that he performs well in the conditions provided.

Could it be that Williams is a superior defender with an attacking game that doesn’t always get highlighted, due to the way in which Forest set up?

Neco Williams and Chris Wood

It must be said, Klopp once commented on Williams’ “incredible” quality in attack when he played for Liverpool, and with six assists from only 33 senior appearances with the Reds, this is hardly baseless.

He was also praised for his “relentless” running by Liverpool writer Leanne Prescott, further strengthening the claim he’d be fit for purpose in Slot’s framework.

neco-williams-liverpool-transfer-opinion

Bringing it back to Trent, FSG may find they have parted with their next version of the Three Lions star, an exciting and dynamic wide defender who distinctively can play across both flanks.

If Alexander-Arnold does leave this summer, Liverpool are going to need to sign a new player to provide competition for Conor Bradley. It’s just a shame that this could have been prevented, had Williams’ potential been properly recognised, and a decision on his sale withheld.

The Women's World Cup will follow in the footsteps of the men's tournament, and expand from 32 to 48 teams, FIFA announced Friday. The changes are set to take place in the 2031 tournament, almost doubling the number of games played and extending the event by an extra week.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

It will likely be a significant step for the United States, which is almost guaranteed to host in 2031. The U.S. is the only acknowledged bidder for 2031, and will likely have their bid ratified in 2026 and share hosting duties Mexico – adding to a historic run of the beautiful game in the U.S. that also includes the Club World Cup, Men's World Cup and Olympic soccer.

  • WHAT FIFA SAID

FIFA President Gianni Infantino backed the move.

"This is not just about having 16 more teams playing in the FIFA Women’s World Cup but taking the next steps in relation to the women’s game in general by ensuring that more FIFA Member Associations have the chance to benefit from the tournament to develop their women’s football structures from a holistic point of view," he said in a statement.

Toni Kroos highlights the one Barcelona star 'more important than Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, or Robert Lewandowski'

Barcelona have already bagged the Copa del Rey title in the 2024-25 campaign and are on course to win a European treble as they lead the La Liga title race by four points and have reached the last-four stage of the Champions League. The Catalan club's attack, consisting of players like Lamine Yamal, Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski, is one of the most lethal in Europe. However, according to Toni Kroos, Spanish midfielder Pedri is the most important player in Hansi Flick's side.

  • WHAT TONI KROOS SAID

Speaking to , the Los Blancos icon said: "He's the best in the world in his position. For me, a player like Pedri is more important than Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, or Lewandowski. They're the ones who decide the outcome of matches, but to achieve that, Pedri is currently the best player in the world in his position. Pedri, in general, is a player you'll miss when he's not playing, no matter who you're playing against. He doesn't just score goals, he doesn't just provide assists. He offers solutions.

"I've been watching what Pedri is doing this season, and in the Champions League alone, he's outplaying his opponents in every single game. In La Liga, he's even more extreme! He's been beating defenders an average of 11 to 12 times per game, which is the hardest thing for a midfielder to do. He's the best. And if you lose a player like him, you'll notice! Pedri is one of the few midfielders in his position who has the gift of being able to dribble past someone in short spaces. A player like Pedri helps you in every phase of the game."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Kroos added: "I experienced it myself, especially once. We were demolished at home. Once or twice, I thought I could get to him, because Pedri doesn't look very fast, but he dribbles everywhere, and I couldn't even stop him with a foul. It's not like with Messi, where you see his quickness of movement. Pedri doesn't look that fast, but he really is. And he's fast because of his ease!"

    WHAT NEXT FOR BARCELONA?

The Blaugrana will be back in action in the midweek as they jet off to Milan to face Inter in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final fixture on May 6.

Club chief travels to make final push to sign "untouchable" £17m Fulham ace

With just over a week remaining until the January transfer window slams shut, Fulham will now reportedly face one final attempt to lure them into selling one of Marco Silva’s star men.

Fulham transfer news

Whilst the Cottagers have so far endured a quiet transfer window, reports suggest that they could yet come to life in the dying embers with the likes of Emerson Royal threatening to steal the headlines. The West London club have reportedly scheduled a meeting over securing the right-back’s signature who could become the latest former Premier League struggler to join up with Silva at Craven Cottage.

Emerson Royal for AC Milan.

After struggling at Tottenham Hotspur, Royal swapped North London for AC Milan only to find himself falling down the pecking order in the face of Kyler Walker’s pending arrival. Now, he could be on his way back to English football courtesy of Fulham – a place where several stars have found their feet.

The former Spurs man could follow in the footsteps of players like Alexander Iwobi by rediscovering his best form at Craven Cottage but it remains to be seen whether he’ll complete a January move.

Meanwhile, as one new star potentially arrives, another could still leave. According to ESPN in Brazil, as relayed by Sport Witness, Fluminense legal manager Leonardo Holanda is now travelling to make one final push to sign Andreas Pereira from Fulham this month.

The West Londoners have reportedly slapped a €20m (£17m) price-tag on their midfielder, but Palmeiras plan to soften their stance by offering to pay in instalments and including performance-related bonuses in their offer.

Although any such offer may be tempting for those behind the scenes at Fulham, Silva was quick to pour cold water on any rumours surrounding the Brazilian’s future earlier this month, telling reporters via West London Sport: “Completely false. Normally I don’t speak about this type of situation, but I think it’s a moment for us to be clear: it’s completely false that there was an increased offer or something like that.

“I spoke with the board yesterday – and completely zero. We are a bit surprised at how this news has come from nowhere. What we can control is ourselves and our work and what we can do.”

Fulham must continue to fend off Pereira interest

In the middle of what has been an excellent campaign so far, which may yet end with shock European qualification, the last thing that Fulham need is the mid-season departure of Pereira.

If reports are to be believed that Fluminense representatives are set to travel for one last push, then it should be one final time that Fulham have to reject the Brazilian side’s advances for Pereira, who still very much has a part to play at Craven Cottage.

Previously dubbed “untouchable” by Silva in 2022, not much has changed for Pereira at Fulham almost three years later. He remains an integral part of Fulham’s ambitions and seemingly not someone that they’re too keen to sell this month even as Fluminese make that final push for his signature.

Tottenham now in pole position to sign "super" £30m Premier League forward

Tottenham Hotspur are now seen as the main contenders to sign one Premier League forward, with a January transfer update now coming from a very reliable media source this week.

Tottenham in market to sign new attacker before January deadline day

Having fell short in their pursuit of PSG outcast Randal Kolo Muani, who ended up putting pen to paper on a straight loan to Juventus instead, Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou is still searching for a new forward.

Tottenham and Levy could now hijack Man Utd talks to sign £30m defender

Chairman Daniel Levy has been tipped to swoop in.

Tottenham were in contact with PSG over signing Kolo Muani early last week (Fabrizio Romano), and were attempting to sway him with a move to north London until the very last minute. However, Juve proved a very tempting option for the Frenchman, with Spurs now returning to the drawing board.

The Premier League strugglers, who are yet to win a single top flight game this calendar year, languish 15th in the table and have suffered defeat on 12 separate occasions in the league alone already – so the under-fire Postecoglou quite simply needs inspiration from somewhere.

Tottenham are coping with vast injuries to first-team players right now, hamstringing Postecoglou’s squad, and it is safe to say that one signing in £12.5 million goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky won’t be good enough come deadline day on February 3rd.

The Lilywhites are reportedly working hard on getting the required, quality fresh faces through the door before time runs out. Spurs remain in the market for a new attacker who can provide an injection of direct threat, with Postecoglou recently offered Lyon star Rayan Cherki (GiveMeSport).

Tottenham are also believed to be eyeing a move for Nice’s Evan Guessand, while other reported targets are emerging as we approach the business end of January.

Tottenham now the "biggest competitor" for Southampton starlet Tyler Dibling

One player who fits the mould of a potential Spurs signing – young, homegrown and good value – is Southampton forward Tyler Dibling.

The versatile 18-year-old has been a mainstay at St. Mary’s Stadium this term, scoring four goals and assisting two others in a wide variety of attacking roles. He could suit Postecoglou down to the ground, and Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg reports that they’re serious contenders for Dibling’s signature.

Indeed, Tottenham are the “biggest competitors” to sign Dibling, who Plettenberg dubs a “super talent”, but face stiff competition from RB Leipzig who are pushing for his services.

He is valued at around £30 million by the Saints, according to other reports, so Spurs would still have to make a significant mid-season investment despite being current favourites.

Celtic make enquiry over signing "outstanding" £20m Premier League player

Celtic have now made an enquiry about signing an “outstanding” Premier League player who wants to leave in January, according to a report.

Rodgers keen on a midfielder

Brendan Rodgers has set his sights on a new midfielder this January, and there are indications that there could be more than one new arrival, with claims suggesting a potential double signing could even be in the works.

The Hoops are now expected to push for Chelsea duo Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Carney Chukwuemeka, who have both found game time difficult to come by at Stamford Bridge so far this season.

With Rodgers looking for a potential long-term replacement for Callum McGregor, there have been reports that Celtic could also look to sign Ajax’s Benjamin Tahirović, with the Bosnian also struggling to force his way into his manager’s plans.

Rodgers clearly has a number of options in mind ahead of the rapidly approaching January transfer window, and there are now indications that some groundwork has been done in pursuit of another target.

According to a report from The Boot Room, Celtic have made an enquiry over Manchester City’s James McAtee – and he looks like he could be on the move this winter.

The City midfielder wants to leave in January, having been unable to impress Pep Guardiola so far this season, with game time proving difficult to come by.

The Premier League outfit would rather not lose McAtee this January, but it has been claimed that Guardiola would not stand in the way of any player who wants to leave, meaning a January move could be possible.

There are a number of clubs from England and across Europe hot on the 22-year-old’s tail, so the Hoops will need to fend off significant interest from elsewhere if they are to get a deal over the line.

Although the Salford-born midfielder has been unable to make a name for himself at City, his potential was on show for all to see during his two loan spells with English Championship side Sheffield United.

Clinton Morrison was full of praise for the “outstanding” young midfielder during his time in Sheffield, while Leam Richardson stated he could go all the way to the top:
