Backing of Justin Langer gave Peter Siddle belief

The pace bowler pushed thoughts of an Australia recall to the back of his mind as he battled form and fitness

A simple text message from coach Justin Langer gave Peter Siddle the encouragement that he could force his way back into Australia’s Test plans, having seemingly been overtaken by a group of younger, quicker pace bowlers.Siddle is in the frame to play his first Test in almost two years after being recalled to the squad for the series against Pakistan in the UAE, with Australia needing pace-bowling replacements for the injured Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood.Siddle played the last of his 62 Tests against South Africa, at Perth, in 2016 after which he battled a recurrence of a back injury that kept him out for the remainder of that season. The 2017-18 Sheffield Shield campaign brought an underwhelming 24 wickets at 39.66, but he has just completed a productive stint with Essex where his 37 wickets at 16.40 have sealed his comeback. He had tried to keep thoughts of the baggy green at the back of his mind, but admitted to a few nerves since returning from England amid talk that he would be included, before the national selector Trevor Hohns confirmed the good news in a phonecall.”When you’ve been out of the side, the only reason he’s calling is usually good news, so when his name came up it brought a little smile to my face,” Siddle said.”I didn’t want to focus too much on the Australian side, just what I could control, so the chats [with Justin Langer] were more about how I was going. We’ve always been good mates. I helped him with the Aussie A side going over to India, just with some different bowling plans. He sent one message saying ‘every game counts’ and I think that was the best little message I had from him. I didn’t need to ask anymore, I knew what he meant, but to hear it from him was good backing and here we are.”Siddle was cautious of not getting ahead of himself during his return from injury last season, having learnt the lesson of rushing things following the initial back injury in 2016. He pinpointed last year’s Big Bash campaign with the winners Adelaide Strikers as the moment when things started to click again as fitness and enjoyment started to combine.”I pushed it last time to come back for that Test and got injured straight after it, so next time around I took my time and got everything right,” he said. “I focused better on what I needed to do, in the past I think I was just so focused on getting back in the Australian side that it took away from my performances on the field.”After the first half of the year I went away, played in the Big Bash for the Strikers, and started enjoying cricket a little more. I had a good tournament and when I came back for Victoria my performances were a lot better so that gave me a lot of confidence. By body was right, I was playing some good cricket and continuous cricket which I hadn’t done for a long while. Wickets always top things off and I think that’s what the English summer has done.”Siddle’s reward, however, is not what many fast bowlers would dream about: the potential of two Tests in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. He was part of the team when Australia last visited in 2014 – “Younis Khan made a hell of a lot of runs,” Siddle recalled – when Pakistan completed two thumping victories, Younis scored 468 in four innings and Misbah-ul-Haq hit what was, at the time, the joint-fastest Test hundred off 56 balls. Siddle returned 2 for 217 across the two matches.”Patience was a big thing you can take out of it, especially from a fast bowler’s point of view,” he said. “You can be over-attacking sometimes and not generate wickets. It will be a different approach this time, we have some quality spinners who are bowling well. It will be hard work, but think we have enough information from previous trips.”

Eintracht Frankfurt's new manager Sir Alex Ferguson?! Why legendary ex-Man Utd boss has posed for photos with Bundesliga club that suspiciously look like a managerial unveiling

Sir Alex Ferguson has posed for pictures with Eintracht Frankfurt that look suspiciously like a manager unveiling, but all is not what it seems.

  • Iconic Scottish coach retired in 2013
  • Enjoys watching former clubs
  • Always had a soft spot for Eintracht
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The legendary former Manchester United boss has been enjoying retirement since walking away from the stresses of life in the dugout back in 2013. He stepped down at Old Trafford with 13 Premier League titles to his name and a historic Treble triumph from 1999.

    THE EXPLANATION

Ferguson also enjoyed considerable coaching success at Aberdeen, having been a prolific forward in his playing days, and a surprising bond with German outfit Eintracht has been struck up down the years. He is now a lifelong member of the Bundesliga side, having accepted their invitation to fill such a role, and has explained an emotional link that was put in place between Glasgow and Frankfurt.

  • WHAT FERGUSON SAID

After posing for pictures that appear on Eintracht’s , with a club scarf and shirt in hand, Ferguson has said of first experiencing the German outfit in 1960 when they faced Rangers in the European Cup: “It was unbelievable. In the away game, Frankfurt beat Rangers six to one. I was at the home game, when they came to Ibrox, with 70,000 people in attendance. Rangers scored first and of course you then get hopeful, saying that Rangers could come back. They ended up losing by six again. I was a Rangers fan, living only some 200 metres away from Ibrox. I went to the final in 1960 as well, hoping that Frankfurt would win, since they knocked out Rangers. I was 17 years old at the time, playing for FC Queens Park. It was an amazing game. Kress scored the first goal. We said: ‘Wow! A great German team’. But then there was Puskas, Di Stefano, Gento. I don’t think there will ever be another team as charismatic as that Real Madrid team at the time. Puskas scored four goals and Stefano scored three. They were fantastic players. And the 7:3 was an amazing game. It was no disgrace to lose that game. They proved themselves in the semi-final against Rangers. It was unfortunate because it was the fifth final in a row that Real Madrid won.”

    DID YOU KNOW?

Ferguson added on keeping an eye out for Eintracht despite never facing them during his time in charge of Manchester United: “Frankfurt’s most successful time was during my career at Aberdeen in the 70s and 80s, when they won the UEFA Cup in 1980. Recently, they beat Barcelona, right? I saw that. I always hope to see the underdog win. Bayern fans may not agree with that, but like all the neutral fans in Germany, I really hope to see someone else win the league again.”

Deadline fast approaching as CSA, players yet to reach agreement

The South African Cricketers’ Association has prepared its position, but sources say negotiations have not begun with the deadline of April 30 looming

Cricket South Africa (CSA) and the South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA) are yet to reach an agreement on their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which expires at the end of April. Failure to reach common ground by then will leave most of South Africa’s international and franchise cricketers – apart from those on two-year deals – out of contract, a situation which has left SACA “extremely concerned,” according to their CEO Tony Irish.ESPNcricinfo understands discussions have not been entered into in earnest, though SACA has prepared its position and will ask for status quo to remain. SACA is hopeful the terms of the MoU will stay the same as they have been for the last four years, which includes a revenue-sharing model for the players that CSA executives had initially indicated they would move away from.In December last year, acting CEO Thabang Moroe and president Chris Nenzani had said the model would be up for review, but by March, they recommitted to revenue-share. At the March briefing, Nenzani also said CSA was “ready to commence negotiations” with SACA in advance of the MoU expiring. However, there are now only nine working days until April 30 – April 27 is a public holiday in South Africa – and fears that the parties are running out of time are mounting. One source told ESPNcricinfo that unless an agreement is reached by this Friday, April 20, the chances of completing the negotiations before the MoU expires are slim. CSA appears to agree with the timeline, but could not put a firm date on when the new MoU will be concluded. “If we can possibly seal the MoU in a week, then we will strive for such but that all depends on the negotiations,” Moroe told ESPNcricinfo. The SACA negotiations are not the only thing taking up Moroe’s time. CSA has been trying to finalise an FTP schedule for 2019 to 2023 and the board is yet to confirm all their fixtures with other member countries; but most pressingly, a decision on whether the Global T20, South Africa’s proposed franchise T20 tournament, will go ahead is also pending. CSA initially had a deadline of March 31 to make a call but now aims to make an announcement by the end of May.”The board gave the management the support of a committee, to which the management would report,” Moroe said. “The feedback given to the committee has encouraged them to allow the management to continue with the negotiations and the planning of the league.”Key questions include whether the tournament will be privately owned – and whether the existing franchise owners will continue to be involved – how many teams will be included in the league, and whether CSA can secure a broadcaster and sufficient sponsorship to make the event financially viable.Last year, in the absence of a broadcast and sponsorship deal, CSA postponed the inaugural edition of the competition after forecasting losses of USD 25 million, and Moroe indicated they could wait another year, if needed.”If the need to postpone to next year arises, all parties involved will communicate as such and further questions can be asked,” he said.

South Africa put World Cup over short-term goals

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis and coach Ottis Gibson are eager to try as many players as possible – even if it results in a few losses – in the lead up to the showpiece event in England

Firdose Moonda31-Jan-2018Get ready to hear this a lot over the next 17 months, especially if you follow the South African team: Vision 2019. You’re probably already aware of it, but the expression is going to go into overdrive when South Africa play one-day cricket. It refers to their plan to win the 2019 World Cup and yes, they have already started planning for it. In fact, the planning started in the middle of last year when South Africa began talks with Ottis Gibson to take over as head coach. As someone who had overseen a team triumph at an ICC tournament before, Gibson was thought to be able to bring a fresh, winning approach to the side and so far, he has.South Africa have won three Test series, including a one-off, four-day, day-night match against Zimbabwe, under Gibson. They’ve also won an ODI and T20I series, against Bangladesh, with Gibson in charge but with inherited assistants. This India series is the start of his road to the World Cup, a road others have found littered with speed bumps, and one that has ended in car-crashes. Gibson intends to complete the journey and this is how:”Our mindset has changed. We have always been a team to focus on the now and when we are getting to a big tournament, that becomes your focus as well. This is the first time, we have taken a small step away from the now and a bigger step into the future,” Faf du Plessis explained.Phase 1 involves experimentation and South Africa plan to use this ODI series and the next one against Sri Lanka in July to trial players, new and old, both in their familiar position and out of them, in order to distill the pool into the best candidates for the World Cup.For the first three matches of this India series, Khaya Zondo and Lungi Ngidi have been included and Aiden Markram, who has one cap to his name, is also involved. Later in the series, the likes of Farhaan Behardien could come back. The aim of all this is to ensure everyone who could potentially go to the World Cup gets game time, tackles tense situations and are able to show what they can do.”This is the first time that any conversation we have had as a selection panel or coach and captain is to see how we can look at more players.”, du Plessis said. “I have never been involved in a vision like that. The now is very important and we play series to win but there is a big focus on how we can get a lot of guys opportunity because a year and a half or two years from now, you want to make sure there’s a group of players that have had time in the middle and time in pressure situations so you don’t just hope your XI is fit all the time.”A natural follow-up is to wonder whether South Africa are willing to sacrifice results for the sake of this “vision,” and the answer is a reluctant yes. “You have to. It is hard. I’ve always been of the belief that you play every game as hard as you can. You do everything you can to try and win a game of cricket. But I do feel we are a little bit more focused on two years time,” du Plessis said. “If you say that, you have to give yourself a little bit more allowance because by doing that – you are not always playing your best team. We will give some opportunities for young guys to come through in this series.”All that means is South Africa won’t be too hard on themselves if they lose, or even if they start to drop down the one-day rankings, and by the sounds of things, they definitely won’t be too hard on themselves if the first game goes badly. Du Plessis admitted fatigue has crept in after the hard-fought Test series, which eight of the 14 ODI squad members were part of. “We are still feeling the after effects of the Test series, mentally and physically. It was quite a tough one. Yesterday after practice, the boys were pretty tired.”They will have to get over the lethargy quickly because the ODIs are tightly packed. All six will be played in the space of 16 days, with only two days’ break in-between matches. The week after the ODIs will see three T20Is played in seven days and South Africa are expected to rest several senior players then because, four days after the final T20, they go straight into a four-Test series against Australia.Very few summers are this busy for South Africa, which also makes their idea of introducing and rotating new players valid. The only questions may be over which new players are being looked at. South Africa’s one-day cup reaches its conclusion on Friday and there are several players who have performed well that are not in this ODI squad. Behardien, who sits fourth on the run-charts, is one. Heinrich Klaasen, the Titans’ wicketkeeper who may start to challenge an out-of-form Quinton de Kock, and who sits third on the run-scores’ list, is another. Dane Paterson, the fourth-highest wicket-taker, is a third.Ultimately, South Africa are looking for match-winners to fulfill Vision 2019, which, as you will hear over the coming months, is all about winning the biggest prize of all.

Fagner leva o terceiro amarelo e desfalca o Timão contra o Atlético-GO

Celtic Can Land Clever Starfelt Heir With £60k-p/w Brute

Celtic were dealt a blow this week as the club officially confirmed that Carl Starfelt has moved on to join La Liga side Celta Vigo for an undisclosed fee.

Who has left Celtic this summer?

Prior to the Sweden international's departure from Parkhead, Brendan Rodgers had already lost central midfielder Aaron Mooy and winger Jota.

The former decided to call time on his professional playing career and retired from the game after one season in Scotland, whilst the latter completed a reported £25m switch to Saudi Arabian side Al Ittihad.

Marco Tilio, Hyun-jun Yang, Maik Nawrocki, Odin Thiago Holm, and Hyeok-kyu Kwon have all come in to bolster the squad but the Hoops could now be forced back into the market after this latest sale.

Who could replace Carl Starfelt at Celtic?

Rodgers could unearth a clever replacement for the Swedish central defender by securing a deal to sign reported transfer target Scott McTominay from Manchester United.

The towering titan has experience playing there for Scotland and once claimed that the position comes as "second nature" to him now, as he had played there previously at club level.

Despite being a defensive midfielder by trade, the Red Devils have played him in the heart of the defence on occasion and club legend Gary Neville suggested in 2020 that he could see a future for the 26-year-old ace in that role.

The former United full-back stated that the talented gem has the speed, aggression, and understanding of the game to thrive as a central defender, which has been utilised by Steve Clarke at international level.

Scotland international Scott McTominay.

McTominay has the physical and defensive attributes to excel in that position. Standing at 6 foot 4, the English-born brute is an imposing figure on the pitch who could provide a big presence in both boxes from set-pieces and crosses into the box to clear danger or provide a goal threat.

The Red Devils academy graduate only started ten Premier League matches last term but his form throughout the 2021/22 campaign showcased his ability across 28 starts.

In that season, he won an impressive 67% of his aerial duels and made 3.2 tackles and interceptions per match for his side, which is more than any Hoops player managed last term in the Scottish Premiership and shows that the £60k-per-week giant is able to consistently win possession back for his team.

These statistics show that McTominay is dominant in the air and does not allow the opposition to get the better of him in those battles very often, which could make him an ideal centre-back when it comes to dealing with opponents who want to consistently launch crosses into the box to create chances.

The United outcast, who ex-midfielder Danny Murphy dubbed a "nightmare" to play against due to his ability to "destroy" attacks, could, therefore, be a fantastic signing for the Hoops to replace Starfelt.

Due to him being a natural midfielder, McTominay would not be an obvious replacement for the Swedish titan but Rodgers could be clever and use his experience playing in that position to bolster Celtic's squad before the deadline passes next month.

Dando “cara” do técnico ao time

Maratona a seguir
