Chelsea targeting "insane" £63m striker who’d be an amazing Jackson rival

Fair to say, things are going rather well for Chelsea right now.

On Sunday, despite being 2-0 down inside 11 minutes at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the Blues fought back to beat fierce rivals Spurs 4-2 in some style.

Jadon Sancho’s stunning strike got the comeback started and then Enzo Fernández lashed home the go-ahead goal from the edge of the area, with Cole Palmer also converting a pair of penalties, the second of which was an outrageous, audacious Panenka that capped off a memorable comeback.

Enzo Maresca continues to insist Chelsea are not in the title race, but the Blues are now clear of both Manchester City and Arsenal in second, a mere four points adrift league-leaders Liverpool, albeit having played a game more.

They will be seeking a fifth successive Premier League victory when West London rivals Brentford visit Stamford Bridge next Sunday and, with this followed by games against Everton, Fulham, Ipswich, Crystal Palace, Bournemouth and then Wolves, Chelsea appear likely to be hanging around the title conversation a little while longer.

Chelsea's excessive spending on forward players

Since Todd Boehly, José E. Feliciano and Behdad Eghbali purchased Chelsea from Roman Abramovich in the summer of 2022 for a reported £4.25bn, the club have been rather active in the transfer market haven’t they?

Since July 2022, a total of 39 senior players have arrived at the club, costing in excess of £1bn in transfer fees.

When looking at attackers alone, the Blues currently have nine in their first-team squad, acquired for £347m.

First-choice centre-forward Nicolas Jackson was much maligned last season, but still scored 17 goals in all competitions, with Rúben Díaz of Opta’s The Analyst arguing that his first campaign at Stamford Bridge “has actually been a success”.

Approaching the midway point of this campaign, Jackson has taken his game to another level, netting eight times in the Premier League already, leading to wide-spread praise of the Senegalese international, including from Sean Walsh of Goal, who asserted he is now “London’s best striker”.

So, does Jackson’s impressive form mean Chelsea won’t dip into the market for a striker in 2025? No, almost certainly not.

Chelsea looking at Nicolas Jackson rival in 2025

According to a report from journalist Graeme Bailey, Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea all remain interested in Dušan Vlahović.

Bailey claims Juventus may be forced to sell in the near future, struggling to pay his £200k-per-week wages, while his contract expires in June 2026 meaning, if he cannot agree a new deal in Turin, next summer would be la Vecchia Signora’s last opportunity to recoup a big fee.

Vlahović has perennially been linked with a move to the Premier League, with Arsenal ‘actively attempting to sign’ the Serbian striker back in January 2022, according to David Ornstein, but instead moved to Juventus from Fiorentina for a reported fee of £63m.

Vlahović has scored 50 goals in 118 appearances for I Bianconeri, on target nine times this season to date, most notably bagging a brace as ten-man Juve fought back from a goal down to defeat RB Leipzig in the Champions League.

Analyst Ben Mattinson described him as an “insane ball-striker” and his second goal at Red Bull Arena emphasises why.

Nevertheless, Vlahović has been heavily criticised for his performances this season, struggling to fit into Thiago Motta’s new style, with his manager saying the striker “must accept criticism” back in September, with Parshva Shah in Goal adding the centre-forward certainly hasn’t “hit the levels expected of him” since swapping Florence for Turin.

So, could a move to West London next summer reignite his career, and how does Vlahović compare to Nicolas Jackson?

The table underlines that, stylistically, Vlahović and Jackson are very different strikers.

At one end of the scale, the Serbian is a pure-centre-forward, having fewer touches, and significantly fewer dribbles but attempting vastly more shots, leading to him having scored marginally more goals during a near-identical number of minutes.

On the flip side, the Senegalese striker gets involved in build-up play more frequently, hence why he’s attempted an exponentially higher number of dribbles and progressive carries, racking up many more touches as well as shot-creating actions.

Nevertheless, the fact Vlahović and Jackson are so different could be exactly why Chelsea are interested in signing the Juventus front-man, adding an extra dynamic to their already free-scoring forward line.

France confirm Chelsea star has withdrawn from squad due to injury concern

Chelsea and Enzo Maresca are concerned one of their rising stars is on the brink of injury having been picked to represent his country in the upcoming international break.

Palmer sparks Chelsea concern

Mercurial midfielder Cole Palmer sparked widespread concern among the Chelsea fanbase in the build up to their 1-1 draw with Arsenal after suffering a knee injury in their win over Manchester United the week before.

Chelsea star was nearly sold under Poch, now he's become undroppable

Chelsea ace was nearly axed under Pochettino, and now he’s a Maresca favourite

ByConnor Holden Nov 11, 2024

The Englishman, who is key to the Blues’ early season success, was caught on the knee by a reckless Lisandro Martinez challenge and was a major doubt for Chelsea’s home tie with the Gunners. However, he was named in the starting XI and played the full 90 minutes as his side held their out-of-form London rivals to a 1-1 draw courtesy of a stunning effort from Pedro Neto.

But that concern returned after the final whistle, when Palmer was spotted limping out of Stamford Bridge, casting doubt on his availability for Lee Carsley’s England squad, though Maresca moved fast to allay those fears.

“He is painful now but it doesn’t look something important,” the Blues boss explained.

Now, there is another member of the Chelsea squad that is causing Maresca concern ahead of the international break.

Chelsea defender set for tests

That comes as a report from France suggests that Maresca and Chelsea were concerned that Wesley Fofana would pick up another injury should he head on international duty with France, as he looks to keep his prize defender fit amid injury concerns. Fofana suffered consecutive knee issues upon his arrival at Chelsea from Leicester City, but has managed to leave that behind him this season, and has emerged as a key part of Chelsea’s backline.

Nonetheless, Maresca has been careful with the defender, leaving him out of the Conference League squad and minimising his gametime as much as possible, with reports suggesting he has agreed to play him just once a week until 2025.

Despite this, it has been claimed that Fofana, who played 90 minutes against Arsenal, ended the game with “knee inflammation”, which has rung alarm bells in west London.

Indeed, “Enzo Maresca’s side want the player to undergo tests this morning [Monday] in London”, and it has now been confirmed that Fofana will play no part in France’s upcoming internationals, with Inter defender Benjamin Pavard called up as his replacement.

Of course, this will come as good news for Chelsea fans, provided that it is indeed only inflammation, and they will be keen to see Fofana avoid any further unnecessary injuries after such a long spell on the sidelines.

He will have plenty of time to recover, with Chelsea’s next game not for almost two weeks when they visit his former side Leicester City, a reunion which he will be hoping to be fit for.

Alasdair Gold spotted £75,000-a-week Spurs player jogging back vs Brighton

Tottenham Hotspur had an afternoon to forget on Sunday as they threw away a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 to Brighton at the Amex Stadium. Ange Postecoglou’s side had dominated the first half, going into the break with a two-goal advantage thanks to a sixth goal in as many games from Brennan Johnson and a strike from James Maddison.

But things quickly fell apart after half-time, with Brighton scoring three in just over 20 second half minutes through Yankuba Minteh, Georginio Rutter, and finally Danny Welbeck to complete a remarkable turnaround.

Alasdair Gold spots Spurs star jogging back for Brighton equaliser

Unsurprisingly, Destiny Udogie was handed the worst of the criticism after a nightmare performance for the young talent. Alasdair Gold gave the Italian full-back only a 3/10 for what he called a “poor day at the office” in his post-match review.

“Back after missing the midweek match and he played well in the first half only to make a mess off trying to clear a cross and presenting the ball to Minteh to score,” Gold wrote of Udogie. “Put in a weak challenge on Rutter before he scored Brighton’s second and was poor again with the same player for the third, getting himself nutmegged and beaten.”

Destiny Udogie

Fingers have already been pointed at who else was to blame for Spurs’ collapse however, and Gold took aim at Rodrigo Bentancur for his roles in Brighton’s second and third goals, handing the midfielder a measly 4/10 for his performance.

“A calm first half gave way to a lacklustre second period,” Gold wrote of the Uruguayan midfielder, who currently earns £75,000 per week at the London Stadium. “Jogged back for the second goal with no urgency and he was far too laidback in the build-up to Brighton’s third goal.”

Angry Ange rips into Spurs' "worst defeat"

Just as Gold was unimpressed with Tottenham’s implosion at the Amex, so was Spurs boss Postecoglou. In fact, he described the defeat as the worst he’s seen from his side since taking over as manager in June 2023.

Ange let Spurs star leave in 2023, now he's massively outperforming Johnson

He’d be a treat at the heart of this Lilywhites squad…

ByAngus Sinclair Oct 5, 2024

“Disappointing, frustrated and absolutely gutted with that. Worst defeat since I’ve been here. Unacceptable second half,” an angry Postecoglou told Sky Sports after the match. “Nowhere near where we should be. We got carried away with how were were going,” he said. “We kind of accepted our fate and it is hard to understand as we’ve not done that while I’ve been here. We paid the price.”

Postecoglou called the loss as bad as it gets: “We lost all our duels and if you’re not competitive it is not going to work, we were not competitive. They all go international duty the majority of them. They will process it individually and I will process it when everyone gets back.”

As a result of the defeat, Tottenham now sit in ninth place in the Premier League, level on 10 points with Nottingham Forest and Brentford.

Lopetegui must axe West Ham man who earns more than Summerville & Todibo

West Ham United have reached remarkable heights over the past decade.

Under Slaven Bilic, east London enjoyed a taste of something more. Fuelled by the magic of Dimitri Payet, a seventh-placed Premier League finish was achieved. Fleeting success started to ebb away and Bilic was dismissed. His successor, Manuel Pellegrini, failed to produce the same level of result and he was dismissed too.

Slaven Bilic

Then David Moyes came along. West Ham have now won the Conference League and enjoyed several campaigns in continental competitions, but Julen Lopetegui’s start to life in the Irons dugout has left the fans wanting, despite the lucrative summer of spending.

West Ham's summer transfer business

West Ham’s technical director, Tim Steidten, handed Lopetegui £120m worth of first-team talent this summer, with sights set on returning to the top after Moyes’ contract expired.

One win and little inspiration across the opening five Premier League fixtures has been frustrating, but there is indeed an abundance of quality at Lopetegui’s disposal.

Two of the most exciting summer signings have got to be Crysencio Summerville and Jean-Clair Todibo. The former, signed from Leeds United for an undisclosed fee, was the Championship MVP last term after posting 21 goals and ten assists across all competitions.

The £30k-per-week winger has only played a bit-part role for West Ham so far – only starting twice in all competitions – but is starting to grow into his skin and will hope to make a marked impact going forward.

In Todibo’s case, he’s technically still an OGC Nice player after moving to the London Stadium on a one-year loan deal – that said, West Ham have a £35m purchase option that they are expected top activate.

Because of this, the dynamic French defender is still only earning £20k per week, meaning that he’s below one struggling West Ham star in the wage table.

Nice centre-back Jean-Claire Todibo.

Indeed, one man is out-earning both of these talented new arrivals and though it’s not by much, Vladimir Coufal needs to be axed by Lopetegui if he gets another transfer window to determine that.

Why West Ham must axe Vladimir Coufal

Coufal has amassed 160 appearances for West Ham since signing from Slavia Prague for a shrewd £5m figure. He’s been an excellent servant but, aged 32, is on the decline.

West Ham defender Vladimir Coufal

The experienced ace started the opener against Aston Villa this season but flattered to deceive. The Evening Standard’s Dom Smith agreed, branding him with a 4/10 match rating and writing: ‘Caught out of position by coming too centrally, allowing Lucas Digne and John McGinn to exploit the space down the left. And Duran got through late on, too, thanks to Coufal’s poor positioning.’

Since then, he started against Palace but has been restricted to cameos from the bench, playing 19 minutes versus Manchester City, 33 minutes against Fulham and then not even appearing last weekend. So, Lopetegui already doesn’t think he’s good enough.

West Ham defender Vladimir Coufal.

Moreover, the right-back is out of contract at the end of the season, but there cannot be any chance that he renews, given that he has effectively been replaced by Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who has joined from Manchester United.

Coufal is ‘only’ earning £35k per week but is still taking home a prettier pay packet than that of Summerville, highlighting that the young forward will hope to see a refreshed deal, should he succeed in east London.

For Coufal, he’s probably approaching the end of the line at West Ham. The Czech native has been a loyal servant and an instrumental figure in winning the Conference League, but now it might be right for the 32-year-old to move away for pastures new.

With such an eventuality in mind, perhaps West Ham ought to have done more to keep the younger Ben Johnson this summer.
