Elgar on de Kock retirement: 'I was pretty shocked'

He wants his team to get over the news as soon as possible as they look to bounce back against India

‘No surprises’ in Cullinan’s South Africa XI

Dean Elgar was “pretty shocked” by Quinton de Kock’s decision to retire from Test cricket but has asked the South African squad to “move on” quickly as they seek to level the series against India.de Kock, who was due to miss the second and third Tests on paternity leave, retired from Test cricket entirely at the conclusion of the Boxing Day Test. He announced his decision to the team on the evening of December 30 but had told some members about his plans to step away earlier. Elgar did not seem to be one of those. “I was pretty shocked. I wasn’t aware this was going to happen, but sitting down with Quinny that evening and him explaining to me the reason, I very much respect his decision and fully understand the space he is in,” Elgar said. “Hopefully it doesn’t come back one day and he still wishes he was part of our red-ball set-up.”Despite supporting de Kock’s choice, Elgar did not take the news entirely well, especially as it comes on the back of several other issues affecting South African cricket, on and off the field. “It’s disappointing. Not having Quinny around is disappointing for me,” he said. “It’s something I need to get over because I know there’s other talented players within our system that I need to give a lot of attention to now and that’s perfectly fine. As tough as it is, it’s one of those things you need to crack on with and get over as quickly as possible. The players respect the environment, we’ve realised we’ve had quite a few setbacks over recent times and this is just another one we need to be clever around and we need to get over because the game moves on. I don’t see this affecting the players and them still being shocked about his retirement.”But de Kock’s decision, at just 29 years old, has prompted a deeper look into the sustainability of Test cricket, especially in an age of lucrative T20 leagues and long international tours in bio-bubbles. Though there is talk of others, both in South Africa and elsewhere, opting to give up the longest format, Elgar does not think that is imminent. “I don’t think his decision is going to jeopardise Test cricket. His reasons are his reasons and we as a group respect that. We have to get over it and move on. The game moves on when guys retire. I have been fortunate enough to have experienced quite a few big South African retirements and one thing I have realised is that the game continues. You’re not immortal and the game definitely doesn’t stop for you.”Dean Elgar has hinted at South Africa not playing an all-pace attack at the Wanderers•AFP/Getty ImagesElgar debuted in 2012 and in every year since then there has been at least one high-profile retirement. “Tell me about it,” he said, when reminded of some of those who have walked away in the time he has been part of the side. “If it was up to me, I wouldn’t have had any of those guys retire but retirements are part and parcel of the game. I don’t think it’s the kind of thing you can control because it’s out of your hands as another player.”Which brought Elgar to what he can control, starting with what he has done behind the scenes to keep spirits high as South Africa, at 1-0 down, enter a must-win match at the Wanderers. “I don’t think I can say the words that I’ve been saying recently but we’ve had hard chats,” he said. “I have had a lot of talks with the guys, even if it’s in a personal capacity. I take the guys aside and just chat, give them a little bit of affirmation to put him in a better mind space.”One word that has come up in those conversations is responsibility. Elgar has said: “Players have to take responsibility. You can talk and talk until there’s action. I said to the guys: ‘I need to see actions’. Test cricket is a hard and ruthless environment and if you want to survive and be successful in this format you need to ask yourself the hard questions and respond to those questions. That’s the culture I was brought up with and I want the other guys to think about it. They’re not bad players. They haven’t become any weaker. They just need to be mentally a bit more switched on and understand Test cricket is bloody tough and you’re facing some of the best bowlers in the world now. You need to put on your big boy pants and react to what’s happened.”The batting group seems to have been on the receiving end of most of the chats, with Elgar pointing the first fingers at himself and his opening partner Aiden Markram, who have not posted a stand greater than four in their last three Tests. “Aiden and I need to look after the new ball. That allows our Nos. 3, 4, 5 and 6 to play as naturally as possible. We know as an opening pair we need to get us off to a better start to give the guys a clearer mindset going in,” Elgar said.He also wants more from the middle order, specifically vice-captain Temba Bavuma. “You need big hundreds to compete and win. We are aware of that. We were very disappointed that we [just] had two fifties [by Elgar himself and Bavuma] in the previous match, knowing that I can score big hundreds,” he said. “And Temba needs to push on. He needs to stop getting those good fifties and getting those hundreds because we know how far it goes with regards to setting up the team.”The bowlers have not been spared either and their lack of incision with the new ball has been under the microscope. “With the ball, there were still a few areas we could fine tune, like maybe making them play a little with the new ball, especially when we are bowling upfront,” Elgar said.Related

Red-hot India look to wrap up series at favourable Wanderers

India’s openers put on 117 and South Africa only took three wickets on the first day before returning to claim 55 for 7 on the third. One of the reasons for South Africa’s slow start may have been personnel related as the most in-form quick Duanne Olivier was not available to play the Boxing Day Test but he is available for the Wanderers. Elgar would not give away much about South Africa’s combination except to say that on a pitch that will offer better balance between bat and ball, they are unlikely to go all-pace.”I am always a fan of having a frontline spin bowler,” Elgar said. “He is someone I can throw the ball to and he can try to bring down the run rate. Keshav [Maharaj] adapts to whatever conditions are put in front of him. I trust that he is a very smart and clever cricketer and having a left-arm spinner bowling to the Indian batters – 10 right-hand batters – is something for us to utilise.”Elgar expects the surface to be far less spicy than the one South Africa prepared for India in 2018, which was rated poor by the ICC for uneven bounce. “The surface will be playing a lot better than it has in recent times. They have a new groundsman in Evan [Flint] and I think he is trying to make it a little bit more batter friendly or a little more of a better cricket wicket that creates good Test cricket. So we have to put our hands up and take ownership of our positions. We’ve been echoing a lot of positivity throughout the group. Hopefully we can adopt the language we have been speaking in the last few days.”

Tottenham plotting January deal to sign "magical" £13m in-demand talent

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly already plotting to join the battle in pursuit of an in-demand midfielder’s signature in 2025 after sending scouts to South America to watch their target in action.

Tottenham transfer news

The Lilywhites are in the midst of a frustrating spell to start the season, with just one win in four games representing a run of form that Ange Postecoglou must turn around in the Premier League. A break from league action hardly helped the former Celtic boss either, who watched on as his side limped over the line against the Championship’s Coventry City in a last-gasp Carabao Cup victory courtesy of Brennan Johnson.

Their struggles beg the question as to whether they did enough in the summer transfer window, having focused mainly on the addition of future stars such as Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall, whilst only spending big on Dominic Solanke.

The transfer policy at the club doesn’t look likely to change anytime soon though, with those in North London sending their scouts to South America in pursuit of another young target.

According to Caught Offside, Tottenham are now plotting a battle to sign Kevin Zenon from Boca Juniors alongside Premier League rivals Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion. The left-midfielder, who can also play left-back and left-wing, reportedly has a release clause as low as £13m in what could quickly turn into a bargain deal.

Having signed Wilson Odobert in the summer, Spurs could now add another left-sided player to complete their depth down that side once and for all. Given that Heung-min Son is now 32 years old, adding such depth is certainly not a bad idea, especially in the form 23-year-old Zenon. The Argentine has shown all the traits of a player ready to step into England’s top flight whilst at Boca Juniors.

"Magical" Zenon can ease future Son blow

Replacing Son will be an almost impossible task when it comes to it at Spurs. The Premier League veteran is both their chief creator and goalscorer as well as playing a leadership role as the club’s captain. And whilst replacing all three of those traits will be incredibly difficult, Zenon should be high up on the list of players that Spurs consider turning to.

Described as having a “magical left foot” by analyst Ben Mattinson, Zenon is gradually finding his best form at Boca Juniors with plenty of potential still to perhaps reach away from Argentina. With seven assists in the current campaign in all competitions, the Lilywhites target would at least ease any concerns over replacing Son’s creativity.

For just £13m too, Spurs would be getting themselves a bargain deal in similar fashion to the bargain they once secured to sign Son from Bayer Leverkusen all those years ago.

INEOS concerned with Erik ten Hag’s handling of £155,000-a-week Man Utd duo

A significant behind-the-scenes update regarding Erik ten Hag has emerged at Manchester United, regarding his treatment of two Red Devils players.

Ten Hag fighting to save Man Utd job

This season has been a largely dire one at Old Trafford to date, with Ten Hag failing to kick on from last season’s FA Cup success, which included beating Manchester City in the final. Many felt the Dutchman may have been sacked if he had lost that game at Wembley, but INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe instead retained him and gave the manager a new deal.

It hasn’t been close to good enough from United this time around, however, with 3-0 defeats at home to both Liverpool and Tottenham summing up their struggles, not to mention failing to win either of their opening couple of Europa League group stage matches.

Ten Hag has still been bullish about keeping his job, but replacements have been constantly linked in recent weeks, including Thomas Tuchel, who was most recently in charge at Bayern Munich.

Former Juventus boss Max Allegri has also been mentioned as a potential appointment, having enjoyed so much success during his stint with the Turin giants, winning five Serie A titles and Italian Cups apiece, as well as picking up one league crown in charge of AC Milan.

Concern from Man Utd on Ten Hag and £155,000-a-week duo

According to a new report from Caught Offside, INEOS are concerned and surprised about Ten Hag’s treatment of Joshua Zirkzee and Alejandro Garnacho respectively.

It is claimed that “while results and performances have clearly not been good enough, there is also real concern behind the scenes” about the Dutchman’s inability to get the best of the £155,000-a-week-combined pair.

That especially applies to Zirkzee, whereas the biggest issue surrounding Garnacho is why he isn’t being played more, given the likes of Marcus Rashford and Antony aren’t exactly firing on all cylinders.

This is just the latest concern about Ten Hag and the job he is doing at United, and it surely raises huge question marks over whether he is the right man for the job in the long run.

Zirkzee has struggled since arriving at United in the summer, failing to justify the fee that the Red Devils paid Bologna for his services, with the 23-year-old only scoring once in his first six appearances in the Premier League, coming on the opening night of the season against Fulham at Old Trafford.

As for Garnacho, he still looks like one of his side’s biggest attacking threats when he plays, bagging two goals and assists apiece in the 7-0 win over Barnsley in the EFL Cup, and it seems strange that he isn’t being used more.

The manager is arguably the one to blame for such failings, and it is one of many reasons why a lot of United supporters want to see a change in the dugout.

Heather Knight hits 95 but late wickets for India wrest control back from England

England lost four middle-order wickets for 21 runs as their grip loosened

Annesha Ghosh16-Jun-2021Stumps Making their first appearance in the longest format since 2014, India wrested a measure of control courtesy debutants Sneh Rana, Deepti Sharma and Pooja Vastrakar as England, steered by half-centurions Heather Knight and Tammy Beaumont, finished on 269 for 6 at stumps on the opening day of the one-off Test in Bristol.England firmly held control of the day’s proceedings until the final session, when they slipped from 230 for 2 to 251 for 6, three of those four wickets coming in the form of lbw dismissals courtesy offspinners Rana and Sharma. The collapse began with vice-captain Nat Sciver employing the sweep, a shot that fetched runs aplenty for the best part of the English innings, was struck on the right toe by Sharma’s full ball.India’s raucous appeal got the umpire’s nod but England reviewed the call without any success. The dismissal went down as India’s first Test wicket involving the DRS; the same bowler and batter also having been part of the first dismissal using the system in ODI cricket. It wasn’t long before Knight, five short of a second Test hundred, was also trapped on the pad. Upon review, replays upheld the umpire’s call, with Knight foxed by Sharma’s drift. That England threatened to go well past 300 on day one was down to Knight’s 90-run stand with Sciver, building on two prior fifty partnerships in the innings, making this the first instance of them scoring 50-plus for the first three wickets in the same innings since 1960. Knight, who had brought up her fifty, her third in four Test innings, with an exquisite drive, carted nine fours in her 175-ball stay.Heather Knight fell five short of a hundred•Getty ImagesKnight’s departure was bookended by wicketkeeper Amy Jones unsuccessfully reviewing yet another lbw, this time off Rana, who then enticed Georgia Elwiss into an expansive drive with an away-drifting delivery. Sharma, diving low at first slip, held onto the thick outside edge to stall England’s momentum.India took the new ball in the 89th over, two overs after Jhulan Goswami had returned to deliver her 17th. Raj summoned Shikha Pandey’s pace for an over towards the close of the day’s play as Katherine Brunt and debutant Sophia Dunkley, who became the first black woman to represent England in Tests, remained watchful. Rana, the pick of the Indian attack on day one, signed off with 3 for 77 in what could be a memorable return to the Indian side after 2016.Earlier, Shafali Verma’s one-handed take at short leg off Rana stalled Tammy Beaumont and Knight’s second-wicket 71-run stand in the post-lunch session with Knight taking on the anchor’s role at 47 not out. After lunch, 17-year-old Verma’s visible discomfort at slip as well at close-in positions had become a talking point as had India’s slow over-rate and the wearing down that the Beaumont-Knight partnership had subjected the Indian attack to. However, Verma’s low, diving catch off the disciplined Rana ended Beaumont’s stay in the 49th over as she inside-edged into her front pad.Beaumont was the second wicket to fall, having reached her second Test fifty off 99 balls. Her six fours crowned an array of drives, sweeps, and behind-the-wickets strokes that often found India wanting in tactical nous when it came to field placements as well as in the variety among spinners. After sending down just 27 in the first session, India bowled only 28 after lunch, despite having two spinners in operation. Goswami, the 38-year-old, did the bulk of the bowling among the seamers, while Rana sent down 29 of the day’s 92 overs.Related

Knight admits used pitch for Test is 'not ideal'

Wickets were hard to come by in the first two sessions for India. After Beaumont’s dismissal, the closest they got to creating a genuine chance was when Knight, on 26, slashed at a wide Pandey delivery, only for the ball to fly over Harmanpreet Kaur’s fingertips at gully. That aside, Knight was perturbed little and, in Sciver’s company, steered the team past 200, breaking up the field at will. Both Pandey and Goswami remained wicketless while part-time offspinner Kaur lost out on Sciver’s wicket in her third over owing to a drop by Sharma.Debutant Taniya Bhatia’s wicket-taking grab behind the stumps and two sixes from Lauren Winfield-Hill headlined the opening session after the hosts opted to bat. India could’ve had an early wicket, but missed out due to a drop at first slip. Winfield-Hill, eventually out for 35 in the 21st over, received a lifeline on 3 when Smriti Mandhana grassed a chance off Goswami.Winfield-Hill’s two sixes were the first by an England batter in Tests since August 2006. The first one was off Pandey, one of three seamers in a six-bowler Indian attack: a short ball was lifted by Winfield-Hill from outside off, and with extended arms cleared deep midwicket. Then came another pick-up six, seemingly more effortless, decidedly more disdainful, in the 19th over off Vastrakar. It sailed over deep backward square while her partner Beaumont followed its trajectory.England’s hold on the morning session seemed well in place until Vastarakar gave India the breakthrough. Angling one back in, Vastrakar induced an outside edge off Winfield-Hill’s drive to the keeper, removing her for 35.The pitch – used previously for a T20 Blast fixture last Friday much to the chagrin of captain Knight and England coach Lisa Keightley – offered decent movement and carry for the quicks earlier in the day, but that assistance diminished as the overs kept getting added onto the surface along the day.

Dan Moriarty, Amar Virdi strut their stuff as Surrey spin a web around Gloucestershire

Surrey strutted their way towards what was set to be a crushing win over Group Two leaders Gloucestershire, as 14 wickets fell on day three at the Kia Oval. Dan Moriarty, the left-arm spinner playing in only his third first-class match, was the architect of the visitors’ demise as his career-best 6 for 60 enabled Surrey to enforce the follow on. A parched Saturday-evening crowd then wallowed in the occasion as Gloucestershire tottered to five down in their second dig.Rarely do Surrey have licence to play the underdog card, but having lost to these opponents in the opening round of fixtures there was an added bite to their play here. In the stands, some pinkly glistening patrons attempted to start a “thunder clap”, made famous by Iceland’s football fans during exuberant campaigns at Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup. Gloucestershire, still 191 runs adrift at the close and having collected just two bowling bonus points from their trip to Kennington, face going home with little more than a pat on the back.Surrey went into this game missing the services of three of their England internationals (Rory Burns and Ollie Pope with the Test squad, Ben Foakes the victim of a freak dressing-room injury), and having seen overseas quick Kemar Roach depart for West Indies duty; but such are the resources available in south London that they have been in charge from the moment stand-in captain Hashim Amla won the toss on Thursday morning.Moriarty’s first appearance of the season brought him a fourth consecutive five-wicket haul in Championship cricket, as he and Amar Virdi took up the gauntlet of spinning their team towards victory. Roach’s replacement, Australia international Sean Abbott, then claimed his first Surrey scalps to rattle Gloucestershire in their second innings.Arguably the most significant absence has been that of James Bracey, Gloucestershire’s leading run-scorer and a man with the methodical minerals to have set the tone for a rearguard effort. Miles Hammond did a passable impression at No. 3, facing 257 balls for 111 runs and once out in the day, but a collapse of 4 for 5 during a chaotic half-hour in the first session effectively scuppered their likeliest escape route here.Amar Virdi was in the wickets as Surrey dominated Gloucestershire•Getty Images

Rarely does the county game provide the stage for two young, English spinners to dictate proceedings in tandem, but with the sun shining down on a dry and dusty Oval, conditions were ripe for Virdi and Moriarty to wheel away. Le tweak, c’est chic, as the French don’t quite say. Certainly they are a complementary pair, having taken 18 wickets together in the victory over Sussex during last season’s Bob Willis Trophy. Virdi, the diminutive offspinner, bounds in and gives the ball a twirl, while the taller, more angular Moriarty sinisterly stalks his quarry.Asked to bat again in the face of a 315-run deficit, Kraigg Brathwaite and Chris Dent walked out to find Moriarty and Virdi waiting for them again. Gloucestershire’s openers survived their unusual new-ball test, only for Brathwaite to chip a return catch to Jamie Overton, before Abbott struck twice in as many overs, pinning Dent in front and then castling Tom Lace to send the former Middlesex man on his way having bagged a pair.Ryan Higgins avoided the same fate, but was stumped off Virdi deep into an extended evening session – Jamie Smith completing the dismissal after a smart take by his left shoulder – after Ian Cockbain had fallen to a ripping offbreak. For the first hour of the day, Gloucestershire seemed capably attuned to the requirements of navigating a way past the follow-on target of 324. While spin was always likely to play the major role, this used pitch was still some way removed from a raging Bunsen. Indeed, after Brathwaite and Hammond had seen off the opening overs of seam – the latter taking advantage of Overton’s pace to pull and drive three boundaries in as many overs – the introduction of Virdi and Moriarty initially did little to change the tenor of the morning. In the end it was a lack of turn, deliberate or otherwise from Virdi, that succeeded in foxing Brathwaite, as the West Indies opener played around an offbreak that went straight on to rap the back pad. Virdi was off and running, haring across the square in celebration, and so were Surrey, as the visitors tumbled from 84 for 1 to 89 for 5 inside five calamitous overs.Related

Lace was Moriarty’s first victim, sucked into pushing at a flighted delivery from round the wicket that straightened just enough to clip the outside edge. Cockbain attempted to counterattack but only succeeded in cuffing his sweep off Virdi straight to square leg, and Higgins was guilty of an even more glaring misjudgement when he offered his second ball unimpeded passage into off stump. With Jonny Tattersall turning a full delivery straight into the hands of leg slip and Tom Smith snapped up one-handed by Jacks at forward short leg off the face of the bat, Moriarty had four and Gloucestershire were limping to lunch on 113 for 7.Despite the carnage at the other end, Hammond had doggedly held the line throughout, earning praise from a small-but-vocal pocket of Gloucestershire support in the JM Finn Stand. He moved to a sixth first-class fifty – and first for Gloucestershire since 2019 – with a single from his 124th ball, though might have been stumped in the following over when Moriarty turned one inside the bat only for it to elude Smith as well.Surrey’s charge was briefly held up by the eighth-wicket pair, as Matt Taylor dug in for more than an hour. He had just driven Abbott through extra cover for four when he left a delivery from Jacks that spun big to hit off stump and give the Surrey allrounder his maiden first-class wicket. Moriarty claimed the last two, including that of Hammond, who dragged a short delivery to midwicket; the spinner’s name may hint at Machiavellian intent but Gloucestershire were too often complicit in being duped.

    Arsenal

If the last couple of years have taught us anything about Arsenal, it's that Martin Odegaard is the only able constructor of their harmonic orchestra. The Gunners' title bid didn't get going in 2023-24 until he kicked back into form, and Mikel Arteta's side were completely lost without him while injured at the start of this term.

The difference between Arsenal playing with and without their skipper is so stark that they go from being one of the Premier League's most unwatchable teams to the top entertainers just by having him available. Odegaard brings both tangibles and intangibles.

    Aston Villa

Since Unai Emery's arrival in the West Midlands, Aston Villa have become a rather cerebral team who pass around the baton of responsibility with selflessness. Even an elite goal-scorer like Ollie Watkins has a dependable back-up in Jhon Duran, while they have a neat little assortment of defenders and midfielders to cover one another.

The biggest gap from starter to deputy is Emi Martinez to literally anyone else in the Villa squad who can put on a pair of goalie gloves. He is the reigning two-time Yashin Trophy winner, after all. Can't get more official than that.

    Bournemouth

Should we, as a footballing collective, congratulate Bournemouth a bit more for withstanding the £65m loss of Dominic Solanke? Perhaps, though it suggests their other players weren't ready to step up in the face of that sale.

Ryan Christie, through thick and thin from good times to bad, has consistently delivered the goods for the Cherries. You can count on him to make a chance out of nothing, whether that be from open play or his expert set-pieces.

Legendary basketball writer Bill Simmons popularised the term 'Ewing Theory' in the 1990s, a phrase used to describe a team who play better without their best player.

For Brentford, the sale of Ivan Toney to Al-Ahli has proven liberating for deadly duo Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa. It's the former we're honouring here, given how much head coach Thomas Frank lauds his off-ball work rate and defensive actions.

PRESSÃO DO VILA!

UH!!!!!
