Amla performs in one-day gear

Hashim Amla has scored several different centuries this year. His latest at the WACA was compiled in one-day mode

Firdose Moonda at the WACA02-Dec-2012Hashim Amla may not like it but he is quickly becoming the Madonna of cricket, because of his ability to reinvent himself with every hundred he scores. There have been four of them in Tests this year. There was the epic 311 at The Oval. South Africa’s best Test score. There was the century at Lord’s, to ensure Amla left his mark on the mace. There was the 104 in Brisbane, which was more about risk than rhythm. Now, there’s the 196 at the WACA, where Amla brought his one-day game to Test cricket. The 50-over game is played in vastly different conditions and to implement short-form batting strategy in long-form cricket can be, in the words of one journalist, “unsettling.” Amla and Graeme Smith did just that.Amla arrived at the crease in South Africa’s second innings when Australia’s bowlers had begun to relax. He was offered width and he saw no point in wasting it. Both Amla and Smith walked a long way across their stumps to play into the on-side, which Australia had left unprotected because they did not expect such tactics.”They were a few loose balls that we managed to get away and that gave us bit of momentum,” Amla said. “We managed to manipulate the field a little bit, wherever there are gaps to try and hit the ball, so that’s why there were a few one-day shots coming in. If the team is in a good position, it gives you the freedom to look for those shots because if you do make a mistake, it’s not a train smash.”As the top-ranked ODI batsman, Amla’s limited-overs game is no longer a target of inquisition. His ability to pace an innings without looking rushed has become his most admired trait and, in a Test, it’s all in his placement and angles.Amla played the ball to fine leg or third man acutely enough to beat any fielder, and regularly eluded point and cover. He appeared in total control, deciding whether to go left or right of the fielder and usually managing to avoid them. Amla’s timing is a less obvious asset because some of his shots don’t make the final cut of a highlights package. It’s the nifty cover drive to run three, the flick to fine leg for a couple and the tuck for a single. He also has no problem with changing pace and mindset, as he did three times in this innings. On the second day, with Smith, the scoring-rate was close to seven runs an over and that dropped considerably later on. With Jacques Kallis and AB de Villiers, the rate was 4.1 in both partnerships but the runs came in a different fashion. The adjustment was easy each time because of the “unique chemistry” with each of his partners.”With Jacques, because of his hamstring problem, we had to be a bit careful with running. We tried to pick up a quick three and he pulled up short so I kind of got the message,” Amla said. “When AB comes to the crease, it’s a lot more intense. We are always looking for quick ones. Jacques and I bat at a similar tempo and we like to walk our singles if we hit the sweepers.”With Amla at his side, Kallis has scored almost double the number of centuries he had before there was a stable No.3 in South Africa’s line-up. De Villiers has been able to bat in situations where a platform has already been laid. He began four of his last five centuries before today with South Africa already having scored 250, and he has been able to build on that.Amla has fed off Kallis’ experience and de Villiers’ exuberance. As a result, his innings have covered the spectrum, and even though he will probably end the year with fewer runs than Michael Clarke, Amla is probably the most in vogue batsman of 2012.

'Even today, if somebody throws a ball, I want to chase it'

Arthur Morris was one of Bradman’s Invincibles. Here he looks back to the pre-deodorant days: meeting the Don, getting bounced by Keith Miller, the baggy green, and more

Interview by Nagraj Gollapudi17-May-2010″Because I grew up in the country, with hard, concrete wickets, I would be cutting and hooking and pulling”•Getty ImagesDid you always open the batting?
The highest I batted in my early days at [Sydney Grade side] St George District Club was five or six, and bowling chinamen a bit. Then, one day, Bill O’Reilly, who had won the toss, saw me relaxing and told me I was opening. I was like “Oh, no, Mr O’Reilly. Truly?” I was 16 or 17 then and continued opening for the rest of my life.Who was your hero when you were growing up?
Don Bradman, who was every boy’s hero. When I was about eight years of age I met him. I put my little hand out and said, “How do you do, Mr Bradman?” I was not groomed and didn’t have any shoes on, and to think that I would be playing under his captaincy was just ridiculous. Why did you look up to him?
He was so great. He just came in and took the game over. You can talk about lots of people getting runs, but he got them quickly – he could get to 300 in a day! After the war, a boss of mine, a fellow called Smith, bowled to Bradman in the nets after he came up from Bowral. Alan Fairfax, who played for Australia pre-war, bowled at him for 10 minutes. Fairfax turned to Smith and said, “This fella is crude, isn’t he?” Smith said, “But we haven’t beaten his bat yet.”How important is concentration for a batsman?
It is very important. I was talking to Bradman one day when somebody got out on 60. He said, “I can’t understand how anyone can get to 60 and not get a hundred.” He just went on and on and on. We had some big partnerships but we never really went up and talked to each other because both of us focused on what each one was doing.Did you really think you could get 404 to win on that final day at Headingley in 1948?
No, no, I didn’t. Don wrote in his book that he thought we would get beaten. And I thought we would. But when Don joined me after [Lindsay] Hassett got out, we just regrouped and started hitting. I got some 20 fours in my first hundred because [Norman] Yardley had the field up all the time and I took advantage. After lunch Don had some problems with Denis Compton and seemed confused about playing the Englishman’s spin. So I took charge against Compton and went after him for two or three overs. The next day EW Swanton, the cricket writer, wrote that if Compton had kept bowling, they would have won the match. I reckoned we would have won an hour early because Compton was not used to bowling.Did you initiate the aggressive charge?
It was really after lunch that I got into that mode. Don was marvellous. He let me go. It was during the second session, between lunch and tea, that we grew confident. In the first session we thought we could possibly get a draw. At about half-past three we thought we could win and then we just kept on
going.Do you require a different temperament as an opener?
I suppose you are picked as an opener because you play the new ball well, which means playing off the back foot and not on the forward. Because I grew up in the country, with hard, concrete wickets, I would be cutting and hooking and pulling. That hooking helped me a lot in one instance, when I took 23 runs off Keith Miller’s first over in a Sheffield Shield game between New South Wales and Victoria.

“I was having a conversation with a bloke who didn’t know anything about cricket and the topic came to Don’s duck. He asked me if I was aware of it and I said I was there. So he asked if I was there because I was in England on business. I told him I was at the other end”

Was that when he bowled eight bouncers?
Right. You know where the field was placed – six behind square and a wicketkeeper, so I knew what was coming. I have never seen anyone spitting chips like Miller was. He was really ripping them down. What did wearing the baggy green mean to you?
Right from my first cap at St George, wearing a cap always gave me a terrific thrill. When I played for New South Wales, it gave me a great thrill. Then I got picked for Australia and that scared the hell out of me.What did you learn from cricket?
Cricket to me was discipline, loyalty and enjoyment. Even today, if somebody throws a ball somewhere, I want to go and chase it. I just have the natural ball sense, that feeling. What is the best change on the cricket field you have witnessed?
One of the most sensible things the administrators did was to get rid of leg-side fieldsmen, because it was killing the game. It brought about so much defensive cricket, which I found ridiculous. Len Hutton, who was a great bloke, never got tired of his defensive tactics. So when I took guard against Alec Bedser, I would yell at the umpire, “Six inches outside the leg stump”.Who are the greatest cricketers you have seen?
I saw only two great players in my time: Bradman was the best batsman and O’Reilly was the best bowler. You made 196 in Bradman’s final Test at The Oval. You were standing at the other end. What did you think when he fell for a duck?
He got a couple of very good balls. The wicket was a bit wet and Eric Hollies bowled a beautiful legspinner. Then he bowled another in the same spot, Don went to play the same shot and it was a wrong’un. I was surprised Don came out fairly late in the day instead of sending somebody else in. Nobody knew that his average was so close to 100. I’m sure if Alec [Bedser] knew that, he would have given him one. I’m sure Eric didn’t know. But nobody remembers that you made 196?
I was on a business trip once. I was having a conversation with a bloke who didn’t know anything about cricket and the topic came to Don’s duck. He asked me if I was aware of it and I said I was there. So he asked if I was there because I was in England on business. I told him I was at the other end.”The crowds had not come to see me bat, they had come to see Bradman bat”•PA PhotosDid the lack of recognition ever bother you?
It never worried me. I was never in the show-pony class. There was so much modesty in the game then, the cricket culture was completely different. Think of this: the greatest batsman you have seen gets out for a duck. What would the bowler have done today? He would do a couple of cartwheels and the whole team would chase him around the ground and give him a hug. But what happened [in 1948]? Dead silence. The crowds had not come to see me bat, they had come to see Bradman bat.Has modesty always been a strong point?
It’s a strong point of everybody I played with. Modesty has disappeared through American influence in the country and the colour television. We didn’t rush into a huddle; if I was fielding on the fence, the huddle would be over by the time I got there. We didn’t have deodorants in our days, so can you imagine hugging each other with all of our dirty socks and smelly things?

Martin Williamson reviews The England Cricket Miscellany and No Balls and Googlies

Martin Williamson23-Sep-2006

The England Cricket Miscellany by John White
Carlton Books, 160pp, £6.59
No Balls and Googlies by Geoff Tibballs
Michael O’Mara Books, 196pp, £5.99
First an admission. I approached the task of reviewing these two books with real enthusiasm as being a bit of a nerd, as my colleagues will verify (the word ‘anorak’ – Ed) I have rather a penchant for trivia and miscellany and am the owner of more than a few similar publications covering a range of subjects at home.Cricket lends itself to miscellany more than almost any other subject. It is a game with a rich history of eccentrics, oddities and statistics. This kind of book is not meant for cover-to-cover reading – they are aimed at the coffee-table reader (which usually seems to mean people who browse on the loo) and so are for dipping in to. They have few rigid limitations, but one thing they have to do is make sure that the information they contain is right.Unfortunately, The England Cricket Miscellany by John White fails to fulfil that basic requirement. The first page contains a howler – it states as fact that Fred Spofforth ended WG Grace’s first-class career when Grace played Test cricket for 12 years after Spofforth finished, and first-class cricket for more than two decades. There are other errors which are apparent on a first read, and while it might seem petty to make that observation, it raises suspicions that other less common trivia might also be wrong. The content itself is, however, interesting and White, who specialises in this kind of publication across a plethora of subjects, has struck the right balance which should appeal to fan and casual reader alike. No Balls and Googlies by Geoff Tibballs is tighter with its facts but is far too reliant on lists of stats. Those present two problems. One is that they are quickly out of date – many were probably so even before the book hit the shops – and secondly that long (stale) lists of them are of little interest to many people. My first impression on being confronted with pages of such content was that it had been used with little discrimination to pad out the publication. That might be doing Tibballs a disservice, but surely there is more to the game than numbers. One final gripe. White goes to great lengths to list his sources, and compiling a book of this kind inevitably means using a wide range. Tibballs, however, offers no such aknowledgments. It seems remarkable if he had all those statistics, quotes and anecdotes in his head. All the more so if he made a mistake which Cricinfo also made until it was flagged with us and corrected last week. It just confirms the suspicion of a rather rushed job to exploit a resurgence in the game’s popularity.

Renegades clash with Scorchers called off after 6.5 overs due to unsafe pitch

Scorchers had reached 30 for 2 after 6.5 overs when umpires stopped play to inspect the pitch, with the fixture abandoned soon afterwards.

Melbourne Renegades’ Big Bash League clash with Perth Scorchers has been abandoned after 6.5 overs because of safety concerns over a water-damaged pitch. The ground staff in Geelong worked feverishly on Sunday to dry the pitch after heavy rain crept under the covers overnight. Renegades captain Nic Maddinson declared the pitch still “absolutely drenched” at the toss and sent the Scorchers in to bat.Scorchers had reached 30 for 2 after 6.5 overs when umpires stopped play to inspect the pitch, with the fixture abandoned soon afterwards. In a statement, Cricket Australia said: “CA will conduct a thorough review into the extremely frustrating circumstances that have resulted in the game being abandoned and a huge disappointment for fans and players.”The decision to abandon the game came after concerns from batters over inconsistent bounce and extravagant seam movement, in particular from the Scorchers’ Josh Inglis. At the time, Aaron Hardie was unbeaten on 20 off 23, while Inglis was not out on 3 off 7.”That last delivery we saw behave quite uncharacteristically and in our minds we thought it behaved dangerously so that was the reason for coming off,” umpire Ben Treloar told .”When we initially started we saw the pitch, we had a good look at it, [but] until you start playing on it sometimes these things don’t present themselves. After the first few overs we were quite hopeful it was going to be okay but then it started to go south and that last one was enough for us to consider it dangerous.”Ashton Turner, Perth Scorchers’ captain, said there were doubts over the surface before the game began but it was worth trying to get a game played.”Start of the day we knew there were some doubts over the wicket but credit to both teams, we made a fair go of it,” he said. “We had enough evidence to call the game off and think the umpires made a really difficult decision, but probably the right decision”There were definitely question marks over the nature of the wicket but think we needed to try and make something happen. Fortunately no one got hurt and the playing conditions say that no one has to get hurt to call it off which I think is common sense.”He added that officials perhaps needed to look for ways that a game could still carry on when a situation such as this develops.”Think we need some flexibility with the playing conditions,” he said. “I’ve heard ideas floated about whether we can play from one end, no doubt there is a way that we could get a game of cricket but we need some flexibility with the playing conditions to allow that.”Renegades veteran Aaron Finch told the broadcast that deliveries had taken “big divots” out of the surface.”Josh Inglis said it felt dangerous when he was batting,” Finch said. “It’s just bouncing ridiculously. If that’s bouncing on line with someone’s body or their head, then that could [cause] some real issues.”It’s hard to say [if it’s too dangerous] when nobody’s been hit but you don’t want to wait for somebody to get seriously injured.”In a statement, Melbourne Renegades said: “On Sunday morning, the club was made aware that the GMHBA Stadium pitch sustained some water damage during Saturday’s heavy rain. Kardinia Park Stadium Trust undertook work throughout the day to improve the condition of the wicket and match officials deemed the surface safe to commence play.Renegades general manager James Rosengarten added: “Our first thoughts are with our fans – the loyal supporters we have across Geelong and Victoria. We are incredibly disappointed in tonight’s events.”We had an important match against the Scorchers and our fans have a right to feel incredibly let down. It should have been a great night of cricket and we will discuss the outcomes of that in the days ahead. The club will ensure that all general public ticket purchasers are refunded”
