Everton could make Beto unplayable by signing "explosive" EFL star

Everton have endured a difficult start to the 2024/25 campaign. The Toffees currently find themselves in 16th in the Premier League table, five points clear of 18th place Ipswich Town.

With that being said, they picked up another important point at the weekend, a 1-1 draw at home to Fulham, and are on a strong run. Sean Dyche’s side have not lost in five games, beating fellow relegation contenders Ipswich Town and Crystal Palace in that time, as well as drawing at home to Newcastle United and winning away to Leicester City.

With the season coming up to a crucial time, a busy Christmas period, the Toffees will hope to come out relatively unscathed. They may well look to recruit in the January transfer window to boost survival hopes and have been linked with one attacker who could add quality depth.

Everton target Championship winger

The player in question here is 21-year-old winger Tom Fellows. The West Brom attacker has impressed for the Baggies this term in the second tier of England and has now been linked with a move away from the club, with Everton believed to be one of the sides interested.

At least, that is according to a report from Alan Nixon. The journalist explains that the Toffees have sent a ‘delegation’ to watch the tricky winger, and are ‘in the market’ for reinforcements in attack.

However, any potential move for Fellows may well depend on funds. Nixon explained that Dyche’s side requires a ‘cash injection’ before they can start pursuing transfers, as they look to bolster their options ahead of a survival fight.

Why Fellows would be a good signing

It has been a wonderful start to the season for the England under-20 international. He has played 12 games in the Championship so far for West Brom, and although he is yet to find the back of the net, has five assists to his name, including two in one game against Stoke City. Across the top two tiers of English football, Bukayo Saka is the only player with more.

That in itself would immediately elevate the Toffees. They have struggled to create chances this season, ranking joint 12th in the Premier League with just 17 so far, as per Sofascore. They have just three players with assists to their name. Ashley Young and Dwight McNeil have three each, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin has one.

Indeed, the West Brom attacker would add great creativity and quality to what is a lacklustre Everton side in attacking areas. He has created five big chances in the Championship this season and averages 1.3 key passes per game, as per Sofascore.

The “explosive” star, as football talent scout Jacek Kulig described him, would be up against the likes of Jack Harrison and McNeil for a spot on the wing. Former Leeds man Harrison has struggled this term and is yet to register an assist in nine Premier League appearances. Fellows might well displace the attacker in the starting eleven, adding more creative influence.

The Baggies star could also then help bring Toffees striker Beto to life. The Guinea-Bissau international joined the club in 2023 for a fee of almost £30m from Italian side Udinese, but he has struggled to live up to the money so far.

This season for the Toffees first team, Beto has played seven games, scoring twice, including a late equaliser against Fulham last weekend. The Everton number 14 has played 44 times for the club, with seven goals and two assists to his name.

However, with Fellows in the side, Everton fans might well see an increase in Beto’s success in front of goal. The striker, who stands at 6 foot 4, has not exactly been on the receiving end of lots of chances, nor has he played many minutes.

The fact he has scored in the Premier League this season will surely be a real confidence booster. Combine that with the chances the West Brom man provides, as he has done all season long in the Championship, and Beto could hit new heights.

Tom Fellows celebrates for West Brom.

It could be an inspired signing from the Toffees, adding great creative influence to their side. Perhaps the addition of Fellows could be the difference between relegation and survival, as the fight to avoid the drop continues.

Real Madrid star Rodrygo recently marked the impressive milestone of 250 appearances for the club. The Brazilian forward expressed his eagerness to stay at the Santiago Bernabeu and achieve "many more" titles with the Spanish giants. Rodrygo has developed a formidable partnership with fellow forwards Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior, as well as midfielder Jude Bellingham, creating a potent attacking quartet for the team.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Since joining Real Madrid in 2019, Rodrygo has made a tremendous impact, playing a key role in the club's 2022 Champions League triumph and the 2023 Copa del Rey victory. To date, he has won 13 titles with Los Blancos, securing every major trophy available.

The arrival of Kylian Mbappe in 2024 sparked speculation in the Spanish media that Real Madrid might consider letting Rodrygo go. However, Carlo Ancelotti has publicly backed the Brazilian and continues to include him in key matches. In fact, Rodrygo reportedly turned down offers from the likes of Manchester City and PSG last summer, reaffirming his commitment to the Spanish giants.

  • WHAT RODRYGO SAID

“It means a lot to me. It’s a dream that I fulfil every day playing here and I’m very excited about this milestone," Rodrygo told Real Madrid's official website (h/t AS).

"I want to achieve many more. It’s a very special milestone and I want to achieve more and more things with this shirt. I came here with the aim of winning everything and achieving all the titles, but I didn’t imagine I would win them so quickly. I didn’t imagine I would already have two Champions Leagues. I’m very happy.”

Talking tactics – Who should open South Africa’s batting?

Big pictureNeither side has a great record in the T20 World Cup and a first-up loss could have huge ramifications in what has become a stacked Group 1.Based on recent form and the ICC T20I rankings, South Africa, not Australia, should start favourites. South Africa have won nine of their last 10 matches coming into the tournament and looked impressive in their two warm-up matches against Afghanistan and Pakistan. Australia on the other hand have lost eight of their last 10 T20Is and their last four series. They barely scraped past New Zealand in their first warm-up game and were hammered by India in the second. But Australia have a good recent record against South Africa, winning their last series in South Africa in 2020, largely built off the dominance of their opening duo in Aaron Finch and David Warner and their powerful bowling unit. His team-mates have been consistent in saying that they expect him to come good in the tournament proper but he hasn’t got a great record in the T20 World Cup compared to his T20I career, striking at just 129 with only three half-centuries in 23 innings. But he does love playing against South Africa, having scored more T20I runs against them than any other nation.Tabraiz Shamsi is just four wickets away from taking the most T20I wickets in a single calendar year having claimed 28 so far in 2021. His performances against the much-vaunted West Indies earlier in the year, where he was player of the series with seven wickets at a staggering economy rate of 4.0, ensured opposition sides will treat him with the utmost respect in this World Cup. Pitch and conditionsAbu Dhabi during the day poses a different challenge than under lights. The temperatures will be oppressive with the forecast for 33 degrees Celsius. Teams have been successful chasing so far in the World Cup at the venue, with three out of four being won by the team batting second, but across all T20s in 2021 in Abu Dhabi more sides have won batting first. The surface has also been friendlier for pace bowlers than spinners this year.Team newsAaron Finch confirmed Australia would play with seven batters and four specialist bowlers with Glenn Maxwell, Mitch Marsh and Marcus Stoinis to bowl the extra overs.

Financeiramente, a temporada rendeu ao time feminino do Corinthians R$ 856 mil.

Arsenal eyeing cheaper striker option than £85m Osimhen and £70m Ferguson

Arsenal are among the clubs interested in signing a striker who is considered a cheaper option than Victor Osimhen and Evan Ferguson.

It has been a productive but quiet transfer window for the Gunners this summer, as Mikel Arteta hasn’t been keen to make too many changes to his squad after their second-place finish last season. However, with the transfer window still open for a few days, Arsenal could still be in the market for more additions.

He'd solve their Saka problem: Arsenal want to secure late £59m signing

The incredible attacker would add so much quality to the Gunners’ squad.

Arsenal have made three additions to their squad so far this summer, with defender Riccardo Calafiori joining from Bologna and David Raya signing for the club on a permanent basis from Brentford.

The club have now also announced a deal for Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino, who has had his medical with the Premier League side and has joined the club from La Liga side Real Sociedad.

But Merino might not be the last addition, as it has become clear that Arsenal are also potentially in the market to improve their forward line. It has been reported in the last couple of days that the Gunners are ready to make a last-minute move to try and sign Brighton & Hove Albion striker Ferguson. Arsenal are said to be interested in a loan move for the Irish international before a permanent switch next summer amid Brighton wanting £70 million for the striker.

Brighton strikerEvan Ferguson.

Meanwhile, as well as being linked with a move for Ferguson, Arsenal have also been linked with a move for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen in the past. Earlier in this transfer window, it was reported that Arsenal were among the sides admiring the striker, but the Italian side is said to want around £85 million to part ways with their talisman.

Arsenal are said to be in the market for a striker, as Gabriel Jesus has struggled to maintain his fitness in recent times, and with Eddie Nketiah possibly set for a move to Crystal Palace, it leaves the Gunners very short in the forward area of the team. As well as potentially looking at Ferguson and Osimhen, Arsenal may now have their eye on a forward who is considered a cheaper option.

Arsenal are interested in Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin

According to Caught Offside, Arsenal are among the clubs interested in signing Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The report states that Calvert-Lewin’s future at Goodison Park remains in doubt as the deadline gets closer, and Arsenal, Chelsea, and Newcastle United are keeping an eye on his situation as a possible cheap option on the market.

Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Calvert-Lewin is considered a far more “realistic and affordable” striker, and both the Gunners and Chelsea are said to be keeping the forward in mind for what remains in this summer transfer window. The striker is said to be keen on leaving Everton, as he's just got one year remaining on his contract at Goodison Park.

The Magpies held talks with Everton earlier in this transfer window over a deal for Calvert-Lewin, but at the time it was reported that a deal worth £40 million was too much. It now remains to be seen if Everton are still demanding the same price for the striker a few months later.

Leeds could forget Hamer with ambitious swoop for "incredible" free agent

Leeds United head into the first international break of the 2024/25 campaign sitting in fourth place in the Championship table after four matches.

The Whites started the season with back-to-back draws with Portsmouth and West Bromwich Albion, 3-3 and 0-0 respectively, before losing 3-0 to Middlesbrough in the League Cup.

However, they have since bounced back from their disappointing start with a 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday and a 2-0 win over Hull City, with the latter coming at Elland Road on Saturday.

Mateo Joseph and Joel Piroe scored the goals for the Whites in West Yorkshire at the weekend to secure all three points for Daniel Farke's side.

That clash with the Tigers came less than 24 hours after the summer transfer window slammed shut on Friday night, after months of incoming and outgoings at Elland Road.

The likes of Archie Gray, Georginio Rutter, Crysencio Summerville, and Glen Kamara all secured permanent exits from the club over the summer.

Meanwhile, Leeds brought in Largie Ramazani, Manor Solomon, Ao Tanaka, Alex Cairns, Jayden Bogle, Joe Rothwell, Joe Rodon, and Isaac Schmidt.

The Whites did, however, fail in an attempt to make a ninth addition to Farke's playing squad in the final few days of the summer transfer window.

Leeds failed to sign Championship star

It was reported that Leeds were interested in a deal to sign attacking midfielder Gustavo Hamer from Championship rivals Sheffield United towards the end of the month.

The Yorkshire-based outfit reportedly made an initial offer of £13m to secure the former Coventry City star from Bramall Lane, but that was not enough to tempt the Blades.

It was also claimed that the Whites went back in with a second bid that included Joel Piroe going to Chris Wilder's side, along with an undisclosed fee paid to the relegated side.

However, Sheffield United had no interest in signing Piroe as they did not believe that he suited what they needed in their squad, and the Dutchman went on to score for Leeds against Hull after the deadline passed.

Their failure to convince the Blades to part ways with the midfielder, who produced four goals and six assists in the Premier League last season, was a shame as he is a proven Championship performer.

As you can see in the table above, Hamer has recorded an eye-catching 22 direct goal contributions in his last 45 appearances in the division for Coventry and Sheffield United combined.

The 27-year-old magician is an attacking midfielder who can provide a huge threat as both a scorer and a creator of goals at Championship level.

However, the Dutch wizard will now continue to showcase his quality in South Yorkshire, rather than West, with Wilder's side for the rest of this season, or at least until January.

How Leeds can forget about Gustavo Hamer

Leeds did not land an alternative number ten option before the summer transfer window officially slammed shut on Friday night but that does not mean that they have their hands tied behind their back until the winter.

The Whites can still dip into the market to attract free agent options at any time, as players who are not contracted to a club can still make moves in the coming days and weeks, despite the window being closed.

There are plenty of high-quality players who have yet to find a new team to play for this season and that means that there is still a chance for Farke to add an attacking midfielder to the group to bolster his side's play-off chances.

Per Transfermarkt, there are a number of attacking midfielders who are without a club at the moment, including Dele Alli, Iker Muniain, Rafinha, and Anton Miranchuk.

Leeds, as they do not have to pay a transfer fee to a team to secure their services, could be ambitious with their free agent target and go for a high-quality option.

The most valuable free agent attacking midfielder, per Transfermarkt, is former Lille number ten Yusuf Yazici, who is valued at €10m (£8.4m) by the site.

Why Leeds should swoop for Yusuf Yazici

The Whites must now attempt to convince the Turkey international to move to England to play in the Championship, as it would allow the club to move on from Hamer and forget about the Sheffield United man.

Aged 27, Yazici is not in the final throes of his career, and is the same age as Hamer in fact, and could come in at the peak of his powers for Leeds.

It will not be an easy move to get done, though, as it has been reported that Olympiacos, Galatasaray, and Nice are among the teams interested in signing the free agent, which is another reason why this would be an ambitious transfer for the 49ers to pull off.

If they could convince Yazici to move to Elland Road, though, he has the potential to be an excellent addition to the squad, after an impressive year with Lille.

The Turkish whiz, who was once dubbed an "incredible" talent by former Arsenal star Mesut Ozil, racked up 12 goals and four assists in all competitions for the French side.

As you can see in the table above, Yazici was directly involved in seven goals in 27 appearances, whilst Hamer was involved in three more in nine more outings in the Premier League.

The free agent ace scored more goals in nine fewer matches in a major European league and this suggests that he could arrive at Leeds and provide a big goal threat, if he can improve his output by playing at a lower level in the second tier in England.

Yazici, who scored 29 goals in 135 matches for Lille during his time in France, could allow Farke to forget all about Hamer by coming in as a fantastic option in the number ten position, which is why the club should launch an ambitious swoop for his services.

Hashim Amla warms Surrey after Rory Burns, Ollie Pope feel icy Bristol blast

Josh Shaw and Ryan Higgins lead way with ball for hosts on green-tinged surface

ECB Reporters' Network08-Apr-2021The opening day of the new LV= Insurance County Championship season saw Bristol over 20 degrees cooler than Chennai, where Rory Burns last walked out in a competitive match, and Surrey felt a chill all day as they made 220 for 9 against Gloucestershire.Josh Shaw, with 4 for 48, and Ryan Higgins, 3 for 35, ensured the home side did not squander winning the toss on a green-tinged pitch. They were denied the chance to finish Surrey off inside the day by late rain. They may even feel a touch disappointed, having conceded 32 boundaries. Higgins, beginning the season averaging just 21 with the ball, was the chief exception, leaking only 35 runs from his 19 overs.”We’re really happy with that,” Shaw said. “We wanted to bowl on that wicket and we’re pleased with how we’ve gone. We probably weren’t at our best but when you’ve got Surrey 220 for 9 not quite firing it’s only a good thing.”Ryan Higgins mentioned changing the angle of the seam for a delivery and I tried it and managed to get a wicket so that was a nice one.”The challenge for Burns was the diametric opposite of that which he faced in India, as the players walked out in conditions that might have felt more like January. But he nonetheless failed, with an angle through the slips for four before he edged to second slip driving at one from David Payne that swung away. Ollie Pope also drove loosely, to backward-point, for 22 in Surrey’s struggle. With England’s batsmen having not contributed, 38-year-old former South Africa stalwart Hashim Amla, now an overseas player with Kolpak registrations ended, guided his side to 91 for 3 at lunch with a series of punchy cover drives and punishment of George Scott’s wide deliveries. He reached an 85-ball fifty, but soon after the break was driving flat-footedly at Shaw and palpably lbw for 56.Ben Foakes, lbw for 26, beaten by one from Higgins that nipped back, and Jordan Clarke, sharply held by wicketkeeper James Bracey standing up to Higgins for 8, quickly fell to leave Surrey in a hole at 144 for 6.From which point regret might linger for Gloucestershire as Jamie Overton made a streaky 40 – edging Payne just wide of second slip and Scott also narrowly past at catcher at takeable height. He went on to flick Shaw to fine leg to raise a batting point but eventually fell dragging Payne into his off stump trying to force off the back foot.Jamie Smith, one of Surrey’s brightest young things, also lost his off stump, for 20, to one that nipped back from Shaw and the same delivery accounted for Gus Atkinson in just his third first-class match.”It wasn’t easy. Being ultra-critical we could have got a few more but I think we’re still right in the game,” Overton said. “You got yourself in and felt a little settled but one just did something out of the blue.”But you can still score on this pitch and we let ourselves down with not taking a couple of partnerships on a little longer.”
