Man City receive answer in race for next Thiago Silva; they’re optimistic

With the January transfer window rolling on, Manchester City have reportedly received a first answer in their pursuit of a much-needed defensive reinforcement for Pep Guardiola.

Man City transfer news

Whilst the Citizens have finally returned to winning ways of late, there’s no taking away from the fact that it’s been their worst season under Guardiola and that they desperately need fresh faces.

It has, therefore, come as little shock to see their club dominate the transfer headlines in the first 11 days of the window, with names such as Omar Marmoush already mentioned.

The Eintracht Frankfurt forward has been one of the most in-form players in European football so far this season and has attracted Manchester City’s growing interest as a result.

In a deal that would finally ease the responsibility on Erling Haaland to be the sole goalscorer of City’s side, Marmoush could arrive to turn their campaign around.

Looking elsewhere, those at the Etihad certainly have the funds to welcome fresh faces having resisted the urge to splash the cash in the summer transfer window after winning a fourth straight Premier League title, with another target including a young defender.

After Marmoush: Man City chase £70m ace who's "very similar to Bellingham"

After Omar Marmoush, Manchester City are looking to further raid Eintracht Frankfurt for a highly-rated midfielder compared to Jude Bellingham.

According to Ben Jacobs, Manchester City are still optimistic that they’ll sign Vitor Reis despite seeing their opening bid rejected by Palmeiras. The Brazilian side reportedly want to keep hold of their defender for the Club World Cup, but it remains to be seen whether City’s confidence will deny them that opportunity this month.

Reis, of course, doesn’t seem to be the only defender of interest, with Abdukodir Khusanov also reportedly edging closer to a mid-season switch to the Premier League champions.

"Thiago Silva heir" Reis is one for the future

Vitor Reis for Palmeiras

Still just 18 years old, Reis is not a player expected to make an instant impact on Manchester City’s backline. Crucially, however, he would instantly provide Guardiola with a star for the future in what is an otherwise ageing defence. Dubbed “Brazil’s heir to Thiago Silva” by analyst Ben Mattinson back in October, the teenager is certainly highly rated.

Given that John Stones is now 30 years old and often struggling on the injury front, welcoming an eventual replacement in Reis alongside Khusanov would represent the type of intelligent move that the Premier League has become familiar with at Manchester City.

But after seeing their first offer knocked back, City must go again.

Tottenham and Levy eyeing move to sign 25 y/o who is league’s top passer

Tottenham Hotspur are now reportedly interested in signing one league’s top passer for Ange Postecoglou in 2025.

Tottenham eyeing new signings in defence and attack

Spurs appear to be eyeing up new signings in 2025, both in defence and attack. Injuries to Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero have dealt a major blow to Postecoglou, who’s been forced to utilise a makeshift option in teenage summer signing Archie Gray at the back alongside Radu Dragusin – their only fit natural central defender.

Tottenham are rumoured to have held talks over signing Omar Alderete from Getafe in the winter, whereas in attack, Timo Werner came in for criticism from Postecoglou after his display against Rangers.

“I said that to Timo. He’s a senior international, he’s a German international,” said Postecoglou on Werner’s performance against Rangers.

In the moment we’re in right now, it’s not like we’ve got many options. I need everyone to at least be going out there trying to give the best of themselves. His performance in the first half wasn’t acceptable.”

Lyon attacker Rayan Cherki has been linked as a potential replacement for Werner, but now, another new defender has emerged on the radar of Daniel Levy and co.

Tottenham want another Leeds star after Archie Gray

According to transfer expert Graeme Bailey, talking to Leeds United News, Spurs are one of the clubs looking at signing Leeds defender Pascal Struijk in 2025 after their move for Gray earlier this year.

“Struijk is coming into his prime and has really been under the radar to a lot of people – not Leeds fans – but he is very much on the radar of a number of Premier League clubs.

“A left sided defender and he is real quality and I am told Tottenham are amongst those who have checked on him. Clearly Leeds want him to stay and will look to tie him down to a new deal, but him staying long-term will be dictated by Leeds getting back to the Premier League.”

Struijk has been a regular at the back for the Whites under Daniel Farke and is actually the Championship’s top passer after 21 games.

Lanning: Injured Perry ruled out of Australia's World Cup semi-final

The allrounder suffered back spasms last Tuesday and “ran out of time to prove her fitness” for the knockout against West Indies

Perry: Chance to include more teams in ODI World Cup in the coming years

Ellyse Perry has been ruled out of Australia’s 2022 ODI World Cup semi-final against West Indies scheduled for Wednesday in Wellington. Meg Lanning, the Australia captain, confirmed Perry’s unavailability and said the allrounder, who suffered back spasms in the league game against South Africa a week ago, “unfortunately, just ran out of time to prove her fitness”.”We’ll go in without her tomorrow and we’ll keep assessing her if we are to progress in the tournament,” Lanning said on match eve. “So, unfortunate for her and the team, obviously, a big blow but we feel like we’ve got some good depth to be able to cover it and we’re going to have to do that tomorrow.”Lanning said Australia were optimistic about Perry recovering in time for the final in Christchurch on April 3, should they advance, but stressed that they were focused on putting their best foot forward in the semi-final with the personnel available at their disposal.Related

West Indies out to defy expectations once again

Injured Perry ruled out of Bangladesh game, expected to be fit for semi-finals

“Look, she hasn’t done a lot [of training] over the past week, to be fair. She batted a little bit in the nets yesterday and felt okay, but she certainly just wasn’t in a position, unfortunately, to be able to perform at the level needed tomorrow,” Lanning said. “So, that was why we’ve made the call on that today.”But, to be honest, we haven’t looked too far ahead. We will keep assessing her as we go if we are to progress but the team and the squad is very focused on tomorrow and making sure that we’re putting out our best game because everything else is is irrelevant, to be honest.”I’m sure there’s work going on in the background to try and get her up to play if we were to get through but from a playing-group perspective and coaching staff, we’re just really focused on tomorrow and the players that are going to be able to go out there and perform.”This is the second World Cup semi-final on the trot Perry will miss, having sat out the 2020 T20 World Cup semi-final and the final on home soil through a hamstring injury sustained in eventual champions Australia’s last league fixture.During the South Africa match in the ongoing World Cup, she appeared to be hurt when tumbling over the boundary rope in a fielding attempt. She went off the field and didn’t bat as Australia romped to a sixth consecutive win in the tournament.Ellyse Perry was the Player of the Match in two league-stage games in the World Cup•Getty Images

Perry said on Monday she had never had back spasms before in her career, but she made clear the injury was “not hugely serious” and that it “definitely has been improving.” She added “there’s a pretty high percentage that I’ll be able to play at some point” in the knockouts. Before being sidelined from Australia’s last league game – against Bangladesh on Friday – Perry contributed with both bat and ball in her side’s undefeated campaign. Having shouldered new-ball responsibilities regularly, she took five wickets in six innings, and also scored 146 runs in five innings while being the Player of the Match in back-to-back fixtures against New Zealand and West Indies. With Perry sidelined, pace-bowling allrounder Annabel Sutherland, who had replaced Perry against Bangladesh in what is her first ODI World Cup, is likely to retain her spot. Sutherland, 20, had picked 1 for 22 and scored 26 vital unbeaten runs in that game.”I thought Annabel played extremely well last game under pressure as well,” Lanning said. “It wasn’t just an easy time to come out and bat for her and for someone so young to be able to do that gives the group a lot of confidence. We’ve spoken a lot about the depth that we’ve got within our squad and I guess now we’re going to be tested with it.”So, I guess, that’s what it comes down to: new players stepping up in different situations and [Australia] not relying on one or two players. So that gives me a lot of confidence; it gives the team a lot of confidence that someone like Annabel could come into the team and make an impact straightaway, so hopefully she can do it again tomorrow.”

Arsenal player ratings vs Man Utd: Declan Rice to the rescue – England midfielder saves the day at both ends, but Gunners' Premier League title hopes continue to fade

The Gunners fought back from a goal behind at Old Trafford, but Mikel Arteta's side still dropped further behind runaway leaders Liverpool

Declan Rice's superb second-half equaliser earned Arsenal a 1-1 draw at Manchester United on Sunday as Mikel Arteta's side fell even further adrift of champions elect Liverpool in the Premier League.

The visitors dominated the first half, but were unable to find a way through, with Mikel Merino going closest when he dragged a shot just past the far post from the edge of the box. And they were made to pay for failing to make their dominance count when Bruno Fernandes curled in a fine free-kick just before the interval to give United the lead against the run of play.

David Raya, who was slow getting across to Fernandes' free-kick, made amends with two excellent saves early in the second half to deny Noussair Mazraoui and Joshua Zirkzee, before Rice swept home a thumping equaliser at the other end to bring Arsenal back on terms.

Both teams had chances to win it late one, with Rice producing one incredible challenge to deny Rasmus Hojlund a certain goal, while at the other end both Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard went close.

David Raya (8/10):

Will be disappointed with the Fernandes free-kick as he seemed to react slowly and couldn't get across. Did redeem himself with some incredible saves in the second half, however, including one stunner late on when Fernandes looked to have won it.

Jurrien Timber (7/10):

Looked to get forward and support the attack, linked up well with Odegaard and was always trying to get in behind the United defence.

William Saliba (7/10):

Bossed Zirkzee for the majority of the contest. He was just too physical for the United striker.

Gabriel Magalhaes (6/10):

Relatively untroubled in the first half, but was put under more pressure after the break.

Riccardo Calafiori (6/10):

Got into some good areas, but did leave space behind for Garnacho to try and exploit.

Thomas Partey (6/10):

Kept the ball moving as always. Neat and tidy.

Declan Rice (8/10):

Arsenal's best outfield player. Superb hit to make it 1-1 and then produced an incredible challenge to deny Hojlund what looked like a certain goal. Never stopped working.

Martin Odegaard (7/10):

Heavily involved. Played a couple of clever balls over the top, sent one powerful effort just over and was denied late on by Onana.

AFPAttack

Ethan Nwaneri (5/10):

Not at his best. Few nice touches, but things broke down a bit too often when the ball went out to him.

Mikel Merino (5/10):

Worked hard for the team in the striker role, but couldn't find a way through. Rolled one effort just past the post in the first half. Got away with a poor mistake late on that could have cost a goal.

Leandro Trossard (4/10):

Gave away the free-kick that led to the goal just before half-time. One of those days were nothing really worked for him. Disappointing.

Gabriel Martinelli (6/10):

Boost for Arsenal to have him back early. Was lively when he came on and forced Onana into a save at his near post.

Myles Lewis-Skelly (5/10):

Replaced the tiring Calafiori, but was unable to change things.

Kieran Tierney (N/A):

No real impact having been sent on to play left wing

Mikel Arteta (6/10):

He'll feel like this was a big opportunity missed, especially in the first half when United were there for the taking.

Aparajith, Rishi Dhawan set up Tamil Nadu vs Himachal final in Vijay Hazare Trophy

Baba Aparajith’s 122 trumped Sheldon Jackson’s 134 and Chetan Sakariya’s 5 for 62 as Tamil Nadu beat Saurashtra in a last-ball thriller at the KL Saini Ground in Jaipur to qualify for the final of Vijay Hazare Trophy 2021-22.Aparajith’s 124-ball knock, which included 12 fours and three sixes, ensured the required rate was never a problem for Tamil Nadu in their 311-run chase. He was well supported by his brother Baba Indrajith, with whom he added 97 off 107 balls for the third wicket, and Washington Sundar, with whom he stitched 76 in 79 balls for the fifth wicket. When Aparajith got out in the 43rd over, Tamil Nadu needed 67 from 44 balls with five wickets in hand and a set Washington in the middle. The incoming batter, Shahrukh Khan, then hit Jaydev Unadkat for a six and a four to reduce the equation to 32 required from four overs. It started looking like Saurashtra had all but lost the game, but Sakariya removed both Shahrukh and Washington (70 off 61) in his successive overs to dent Tamil Nadu once again. At the start of the chase, he had dismissed N Jagadeesan and Vijay Shankar to reduce Tamil Nadu to 23 for 2 in the fourth over.On the last ball of the 49th over, Sakariya sent back M Siddharth to complete his maiden five-wicket haul in List A cricket, leaving Tamil Nadu eight down. With seven required from the final over, Chirag Jani conceded only four off the first four balls against R Sai Kishore and Ragupathy Silambarasan. But a wide and a single on the penultimate ball by Silambarasan tied the scores. Kishore then hit the last ball for four to seal the match. In the morning, Saurashtra lost Harvik Desai early after being asked to bat. Jackson and Vishvaraj Jadeja took the side past 100 in the 22nd over; both Jackson and Jadeja brought up their half-centuries before left-arm spinner Siddharth broke the 92-run stand with the latter’s wicket. But at 123 for 2 in 25.2 overs, the platform was set for a big total.Prerak Mankad (37 off 32) and Arpit Vasavada (57 off 40) took full advantage of that to provide impetus to the innings. Meanwhile, Jackson brought up his hundred off 106 balls and, in all, hit 11 fours and four sixes during his knock. That, however, couldn’t fetch the win for Saurashtra.File photo: Rishi Dhawan bagged 4 for 27•AFP

Yet another all-round show from captain Rishi Dhawan steered Himachal Pradesh into their maiden Vijay Hazare Trophy final, ending Services’ fairy-tale run in the tournament at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. After scoring 84 off 77 balls to lift HP to 281 for 6, Dhawan picked up 4 for 27 to help bundle out Services for 204 in 46.1 overs.Earlier in the day, Prashant Chopra and Digvijay Rangi added 74 for the second wicket for HP but Services struck back with two quick wickets to make it 106 for 4 in the 25th over.Dhawan then joined hands with Chopra, who soon brought up his fifth successive half-century of the tournament. The two added 88 in 103 balls for the fifth wicket before Chopra fell to Abhishek Tiwari for a 109-ball 78.If the partnership between Dhawan and Chopra stabilised the innings, the one between Dhawan and Akash Vasisht took the game away from Services. Dhawan and Vasisht smashed 83 off just 48 balls for the sixth wicket as HP ransacked 101 in the last ten overs. Dhawan struck nine fours and a six in his knock, while Vasisht remained unbeaten on 45 off 29 with four fours and two sixes.Dhawan, though, wasn’t done yet. He caused further damage with the ball, removing Lakhan Singh and Mohit Ahlawat cheaply to leave Services on 36 for 2 in their chase of 282. Ravi Chauhan (45 off 70) and Rajat Paliwal (55 off 66) showed some resistance but neither could carry on to make a big score.By the time Paliwal got out, in the 37th over, the asking rate had gone past nine an over. In search of quick runs, Services slipped from 174 for 5 to 179 for 8. The last two pairs took the side past 200 before Dhawan pegged back Bahadur’s middle stump to wrap up the game.

Cardiff have last candidates to replace Bulutl; includes Real Madrid legend

In what could finally see the Bluebirds find their next manager, Cardiff City have reportedly narrowed their options down to two final candidates, which include a Real Madrid legend.

Cardiff's managerial candidates

Since sacking Erol Bulut at the end of September, Cardiff have relied on Omer Riza on an interim basis. But whilst results have improved somewhat after Bulut took charge of their worst start to a season in 94 years, the Welsh side still sit rock bottom of the Championship table, three points adrift of safety and in desperate need of a permanent appointment.

Whoever comes in will have an almighty task, but Cardiff have at least turned a corner in their last two games, with a 1-0 victory over Millwall followed by a 1-1 draw against Bristol City last time out.

Get things right on the managerial front, and the Bluebirds may just build on those results to eventually move out of the drop zone and towards safety to put such a disappointing start behind them, especially if they make the right choice between the two reported final candidates.

"Fantastic" new coach would jump at chance to join Cardiff City – Palmer

The pundit “can see him leaving”.

ByBarney Lane Oct 10, 2024

According to Chris Wheatley of LondonWorld, Cardiff have narrowed their candidates down to Ruben Selles and Claude Makelele, with the latter being a potential arrival to steal the headlines. The Welsh side are reportedly in talks with the Chelsea and Real Madrid legend as he prepares to become the latest star to take to the dugout in the Championship.

Leaving after just three weeks in charge of Greek side Asteras Tripolis, Makelele will be desperate for another attempt in the technical area in what would be his second spell in Wales, having been Swansea City’s assistant manager in the 2016/17 campaign.

Southampton manager Ruben Selles andKamaldeenSulemana

Meanwhile, although Selles wouldn’t grab the same headlines, the Reading boss represents a solid option in his own right amid the chaos that he’s been forced to deal with in charge of the Royals amid their financial crisis.

Makelele could follow Rooney and Carrick path

In what makes a lot of us feel old these days, the likes of Tom Cleverley, Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick no longer find themselves competing or playing alongside each other on the pitch. Instead, the former Premier League players find themselves competing in the technical area to add an added element of intrigue to the Championship.

All have had varying fortunes during their time in management, and could now be joined by former Chelsea midfielder Makelele. The Frenchman, perhaps alongside Rooney at Plymouth Argyle, would arguably have the most difficult task out of the fresh crop of former players turned managers.

Keeping Cardiff afloat – particularly without extensive experience – looks a tough task on paper, but this could be the true rebirth of Makelele’s managerial career which stalled in Greece, having returned to the dugout after five years away.

As the international break goes on, the Frenchman could be one to watch with Cardiff now down to their final candidates in their search to replace Bulut.

Aston Villa wanted to sign £54m star on a free but got Duran instead

Riding high still on their unbelievable success in the Champions League over Bayern Munich, Unai Emery’s Aston Villa had to settle for a share of the points against Manchester United last time out back in Premier League action.

Whilst Villa’s tie with Bayern was high-octane and fascinating to watch unfold, the goalless draw with Erik ten Hag’s Red Devils was a slog in contrast, as the hosts managed just one paltry shot on target.

Still, with the explosive nature of Jhon Duran at Emery’s disposal to call upon from off the substitutes bench, there are bound to be far more exciting contests to come.

Jhon Duran's form at Villa

Duran has been a man possessed for the West Midlands outfit this campaign so far, with the 20-year-old hotshot more than justifying his slender £18m fee in the here and now.

The entertaining Colombian centre-forward has registered a ridiculous six goals from ten games this campaign for Villa, with four of those coming in the Premier League despite making zero starts in the competition.

Of course, the standout pick from his glowing resume of strikes this season was against Vincent Kompany’s Bayern, as the super confident attacker amazingly caught out former World Cup winning goalkeeper Manuel Neuer with a smart finish late on to win his side the tight clash.

Duran has now been rightly rewarded with a new bumper contract at Villa Park, which now sees the breakout attacker stay put in England until 2030 to detract any onlookers interested in him, as the 20-year-old continues to be a clutch player for his side when it matters.

Jhon Duran

Yet, although Emery and Co will be overjoyed that they managed to get their hands on Duran when they did, the Premier League side will be left wondering whether they could have snapped up a different attacker last January.

Impressively, the player in question is actually outscoring the ex-Chicago Fire man.

One that got away

The transfers that nearly happened but never did. This article is part of Football FanCast's One That Got Away series.

Who Villa could have signed over Duran

As per various different reports, Villa were previously keen on adding French star Marcus Thuram to their ranks, with rumours circulating that he was going to relocate to England from then-employers Borussia Monchengladbach early last year.

Manchester United were also reportedly in the running to try and secure the deadly Frenchman’s services, but Thuram eventually made his way to Inter Milan in the summer instead, with the Serie A giants jubilant at the fact that they managed to pick up the lofty 6 foot 4 striker for free after his Gladbach contract had run its course.

Interestingly, Thuram boasts more goals in the top Italian division than Duran has managed this campaign so far in the Premier League, with a stunning seven strikes from just seven games for Inter, which takes his total goal tally for the Serie A titans up to 22 goals from 54 appearances.

Far outperforming his xG too, it would have been a joy to watch if both Thuram and his theoretical Colombian teammate lined up with each other at Villa Park, giving Emery’s men some crazy firepower away from leading man Ollie Watkins.

As a result of his continued excellent performances donning the number nine jersey for Inter, the 27-year-old’s transfer value now stands at a hefty £54m according to Transfermarkt.

Yet, although Thuram has even been labelled as “special” by one of his Inter teammates Benjamin Pavard at the peak of his powers, Villa will be more than content with the fact they have Duran to call upon as he strives to continue taking the English game by storm when the international break is over.
