Time for Alessia Russo to step up: Arsenal transfer offers Lionesses star the perfect opportunity to take her game to the next level

The Gunners have been interested in the England striker for some time, and submitted a world-record bid in January that Manchester United rejected

One of women's football's biggest summer transfer sagas has finally come to an end. England star Alessia Russo left Manchester United in mid-June, having failed to agree a new deal with the club. Enter Arsenal, one of the Red Devils' biggest rivals for trophies in England, who snapped up a forward they have admired for many, many years now.

Her destination almost always appeared to be north London, but when reports emerged that she could yet return to the United States, where she excelled in college, that added a little doubt. Lyon, the eight-time European champions, were also linked with Russo, as well as there being rumblings of interest from elsewhere on the continent.

The number of suitors underlined just how highly-rated the 24-year-old is, even if she only hit double figures in a league season for the first time in 2022-23. So, what will Russo bring to Arsenal? How does she fit in? GOAL takes a look at what the move means…

    Arsenal finally get their target

Arsenal’s interest in Russo goes back some years. The club actually looked at her at the start of 2020, and conversations were had with then manager Joe Montemurro, who described the player as being "very interested".

However, the Covid-19 pandemic caused chaos. Russo was in the U.S. at the time, representing the North Carolina Tar Heels, and there was a lot of confusion around the college season.

“It was bound to start, then it stopped. Then they started it again, and then they canned it. Then, all of a sudden, there was a big rush to get players signed and players sorted,” Montemurro explained in late 2020. “Unfortunately, with Alessia, we just weren't in a position at the time to bring her in and she obviously found a solution at United. All credit to her, she's doing very well.”

That interest was revived in January, when Arsenal submitted a world-record bid for Russo in a desperate attempt to sign a forward before the end of the winter window, having lost both Beth Mead and Vivianne Miedema to ACL injuries in the first half of the season.

Understandably, United were never going to let their starting striker join a team they were rivalling for the Women’s Super League title and Women’s Champions League places. It was the right decision, even if she left for free.

Three-and-a-half years on from their initial interest, Arsenal have finally got their target, beating both United and NWSL side Washington Spirit to her signature.

    What will Russo bring?

Having watched her score a late, late winner at the Emirates last season in what was a thrilling 3-2 win for Manchester United, Arsenal know all about Russo’s qualities. The England star is a top finisher, she can hold the ball up well and she’s good in the air, too, all traits that make her a brilliant back-to-goal centre-forward.

Russo's movement is also excellent and helped her form a great relationship with Ella Toone, United's playmaking midfielder. It will be interesting to see how those partnerships develop between her and her new team-mates at Arsenal, because the London club have a lot of players able to thread those eye-of-the-needle passes.

Throw in Russo's quality in possession and skillfulness, and she will suit the Gunners' easy-on-the-eye style of play, while she also brings big experience despite only being 24. After all, the forward was a stand-out performer in England’s Euro 2022 triumph, scoring four goals in six games despite coming off the bench in all of them.

  • Getty

    How will Russo fit?

This is the biggest question around Russo’s move to Arsenal. The forward will compete with Stina Blackstenius for that starting striker role, but will bring something very different to the table in comparison to the Swede.

While Blackstenius presses hard and makes great runs off the shoulder, Russo – who can still make runs in behind – plays more with her back to goal and can drop deeper at times to get involved.

Will that see her get in the way of players like Miedema, who upon her return from an ACL will likely play as a No.10 again? Or will it open up space for her, Frida Maanum and others to run in behind? Will Russo have to adapt to Arsenal’s style, or will the Gunners adapt to suit their new signing?

It’s certainly going to be interesting to watch her time with the club unfold because of these questions. Arsenal have a lot of very different attacking options they can deploy now, and those different combinations in the front three, and in midfield, could also change how things look as Russo prepares to pull on the club’s colours for the first time.

It could well add another dynamic to Jonas Eidevall's team and make them more adaptable.

    Important depth for Arsenal

Another significant thing to note about Russo’s arrival at the Emirates is that it improves Arsenal’s depth up top. The Gunners were hit so hard by injuries last year and, as a result, the goal-scoring burden fell heavily on the shoulders of Blackstenius. To have two centre forwards who can now absorb that responsibility will not only help the Swede, but also Mead and Miedema.

The injured pair should start to come back into the fold as the 2023-24 season begins, and Russo’s addition means even less pressure should be on them as they start to return from long lay-offs.

It’s also a good signing for Gio, the young Brazilian that was on loan at Everton for the first half of the 2022-23 season after joining from Barcelona last summer. She was doing well with the Toffees, finding her feet in English football without too much pressure on her, until Eidevall had to recall the 20-year-old in January due to those injuries.

Gio had her part to play when she came back to north London, but it was always going to be difficult for her to make a huge mark under the circumstances. Russo’s arrival likely opens the door for her to get another productive loan spell in England under her belt instead.

Jose Mourinho is a 'f*cking disgrace'! Reckless Roma coach is responsible for disgusting abuse of referee Anthony Taylor

The Portuguese is essentially the Donald Trump of football – a dangerously charismatic character who whips his followers into a frenzy

In scenes more reminiscent of WWE than football, Jose Mourinho waited around in the car park at the Puskas Arena on Wednesday night to verbally attack Anthony Taylor, with the Portuguese – who is 60 years of age – labelling the referee and his assistants "f*cking crooks", and their handling of Roma's Europa League final loss to Sevilla a "f*cking disgrace".

The following day, Taylor and his visibly terrified family were angrily confronted by Roma fans while trying to board a flight out of Hungary. Those supporters are obviously as ignorant as they are pathetic, and each and every single one of them should be held accountable for their actions.

But so too should Mourinho. The fans were obviously operating over their own free will but there is simply no denying that they were mirroring the behaviour of Roma's manager, coaching staff and players the night before – and over the past two years.

  • An 'enemy of football'

In Mourinho's very first press conference as Roma coach in the summer of 2021, he claimed that he had matured, that he was a changed man, and that no longer went looking for arguments. Just over a month into the new season, he was sent off for the first time.

And the red and yellow cards just haven't stopped coming. At one point earlier this season, Mourinho had the worst disciplinary record in Serie A – and not just among coaches, but players too.

He has long been renowned for his abhorrent treatment of officials, of course. It's nearly two decades since he was labelled an "enemy of football" by Volker Roth, the chairman of UEFA's referees' committee. And his conduct hasn't improved with age; if anything, it's worsened.

Furthermore, he has now surrounded himself with a number of similarly combustible characters.

    'Mourinho's attitude is shocking'

Earlier this season, Roma goalkeeping coach Nuno Santos was involved in a physical altercation with Bodo/Glimt manager Kjetil Knutsen.

Both men claimed self-defence, but both were suspended by UEFA, infuriating Knutsen, who was disgusted not only by Santos and the suspension, but also Mourinho.

Knutsen said: "[Mourinho's] type of attitude is shocking. His values and his way of coaching are so far from what I represent. It’s incredibly disappointing to see such behaviour from a coach with so many titles and who has been part of the sport for such a long time."

Just a few days later, another unidentified member of Roma's backroom team mocked Salernitana over their expected relegation from Serie A.

On that occasion, Mourinho actually apologised on behalf of his staff but, with his characteristic level of class, took advantage of the occasion to take another pop at Bodo-Glimt.

"We are civilised people, what happens on the field ends there," he said without a trace of irony. "Nobody will be waiting outside 45 minutes later to punch someone in the face."

Presumably, though, waiting outside to insult a referee is perfectly acceptable behaviour in Mourinho's book…

  • Getty

'The face that says we have been robbed'

Because, as we know, it's never Mourinho's fault. He's always the victim, never the villain. The real culprits are the officials and organisations orchestrating a shadowy conspiracy aimed at keeping him and his clubs down. Remember, he claimed to have worn a wire during a Serie A game against Monza last month to protect himself from the referee!

Even while discussing his future at Roma on Wednesday evening in his post-match press conference, Mourinho claimed that he was tired of being the club's coach, manager, communications director and "the face that says we have been robbed".

It certainly doesn't feel like he's grown weary of the latter role, though. He never misses an opportunity to slate a referee.

It's actually become difficult to know exactly which one he considers "the worst" – because it feels like it changes on a regular basis.

Right now, though, it's probably Daniele Chiffi, whom he recently accused of having "no human connection with anyone" and "no empathy".

  • 'They were afraid something might happen'

Of course, there remains a temptation to laugh off such comments – particularly among Mourinho's die-hard fans, from Porto, Chelsea and Roma.

But he's constantly making very serious allegations. He essentially accused the officials of corruption on Wednesday night, that VAR only intervened during the penalty shootout to ensure victory for Sevilla.

"They were afraid something might happen at the end so they let them win it quickly," Mourinho told reporters. It was a typically ludicrous claim from the worst loser in football.

However, people are now afraid of what might happen at the end of Roma games because of the incendiary actions of Mourinho and his staff.

New England Revolution vs New York City FC: Where to watch the match online, live stream, TV channels & kick-off time

Here's where you can watch New England Revolution take on New York City FC in MLS on TV or stream live.

On Saturday, New England Revolution and New York City FC will square off at Gillette Stadium in the sixth round of Major League Soccer matches. The hosts are at the top of the Eastern Conference standings thanks to their impressive start to the season, while their visitors are five points worse off after five games.

▶ Watch every MLS match, including the playoffs, here

New England Revolution have started the new term in a much more convincing fashion after a disappointing MLS season last time around.

Bruce Arena's team began with back-to-back victories before suffering their lone loss so far, albeit a 4-0 hammering away at Los Angeles FC to partially halt their momentum.

In their five league games so far, Arena's team has amassed 12 points through four victories. The Revs, though, promptly recovered with two victories.

They are going up against a New York City team that hasn't been as consistent as their hosts so far and will be looking to get their season off to a good start.

They had a sluggish start to the 2023 term under Nick Cushing's new leadership. After suffering their second MLS loss of the year, New York City now has seven points from their first five games.

They will undoubtedly want to start putting together a run of consistency as soon as possible to ensure that they remain at the top of the Conference for the duration of the season.

Still, they will have a difficult task on the road against the league leaders on Saturday.

Villa must win race to sign Celtic’s Edouard

According to reports, Aston Villa transfer target Odsonne Edouard is attracting interest from both Arsenal and Leicester.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent weeks and months have suggested the Celtic striker is someone Dean Smith’s side are looking at, but they now appear to face increasing competition in the race to sign him.

According to The Telegraph, both Arsenal and Leicester are also now fighting it out to sign the young Frenchman, seemingly leaving Villa with a lot of work to do to convince the striker to join them instead.

Lange must act now

With sides like Arsenal and Leicester both keen on Edouard too, it’s surely time for Johan Lange to step up and ensure Villa get their man this summer.

As well as being a lone centre-forward, the £13.5m-rated Frenchman could actually prove to be a perfect foil for Ollie Watkins in either a two-man strike force or with the latter coming in from out wide.

Recent seasons have seen Edouard partner alongside Leigh Griffths as Celtic have gone with two up top, so he’s had previous experience of working alongside another number nine.

His former Hoops boss, Neil Lennon, has previously raved about the qualities that Edouard brings to the table, and it’s a ringing endorsement of why Villa should be going after him.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-aston-villa-transfer-rumours-and-news-copy-copy” title=”Latest Aston Villa transfer rumours and news”]

He said: “He’s hugely important (to us), he’s an outstanding footballer, talismanic almost, he’s so talented, so cool and he had two great finishes. He’s up there with some of the best we’ve had over the last 20 odd years.”

Having another prolific striker like Edouard in the ranks – he’s already scored 20 goals this season – would give Smith a much-needed goal-scoring threat, other than Watkins.

But, instead of replacing him in the starting line-up, the duo could represent an intriguing double act if given the opportunity to play in the same team together, much like Edouard has done with Griffiths at Celtic Park.

Meanwhile, Villa boss Dean Smith should unleash this academy starlet…

Moyes provides key Rice and Soucek update

David Moyes has refused to rule out the idea of West Ham selling Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek this summer, admitting that the club could listen to offers for the duo.

The Hammers have enjoyed a season to remember in the Premier League, finding themselves right in the Champions League battle. Victory away to Wolves on Monday evening would see Moyes’ side go fourth in the table, leapfrogging Chelsea after their shock 5-2 defeat at home to West Brom on Saturday.

Rice and Soucek have undoubtedly been two of West Ham’s key men this season, with the £90m-rated pair (per Transfermarkt) excelling in the middle of the park.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, their form has led to concerns over other clubs tabling bids for them at the end of the campaign.

Moyes provides update on Rice and Soucek

Speaking to reporters [via The Mirror], Moyes admitted that West Ham may be willing to hear offers for the duo, should they arrive, but stressed that they wouldn’t be leaving on the cheap:

“Yes, any club can make offers for players but we’ve not had any big offers. I hope we don’t get any but if we do, like any other club, we would consider them.

“I don’t know where the Bank of England is for Tomas Soucek but I’ve said with Declan, it would take the Bank of England and the Royal Bank of Scotland to get him.

“It will have to be the Bank of Czech as well for Tomas!”

Transfer Tavern take

Rice and Soucek have both been integral to West Ham’s success, so they should do all they can to keep hold of them this summer.

The Czech international is their top Premier League scorer this term despite playing in a defensive midfield role, while the Englishman’s tackling and interception averages are among the highest in the Irons’ squad (WhoScored).

Both of their contracts run until 2024, which should at least the Hammers in a strong negotiating position with only huge bids likely to be accepted, as Moyes has hinted.

In other news, David Moyes has dropped another big transfer hint ahead of this summer. Read more about it here.

Phil Foden is back – but what's up with Erling Haaland?! Winners & Losers as Man City sink Newcastle to pile pressure on Arsenal

The England international is well and truly over his post-World Cup struggles but his Norwegian team-mate is in a concerning slump…

Phil Foden inspired Manchester City to a 2-0 win over Newcastle which kept them on Arsenal's coattails in the Premier League title race.

The England international went into the game after scoring three times in his last two appearances and continued on that rich vein of form with a beautiful solo goal to open the scoring.

Beyond the goal, Foden was everywhere, playing neat one-twos with Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland and running Newcastle's usually tight defence ragged.

City fans can rejoice. Their homegrown hero is not in decline, he was just resting himself for the business end of the season.

It was not a perfect performance from City, and they needed Bernardo Silva to come off the bench and score midway through the second half to settle them down after Newcastle had threatened to get back into the game.

City are determined to take the title race with Arsenal right to the wire, but Newcastle's star is fading, and fast.

This was yet another defeat against a top team and Eddie Howe has some thinking to do if his side are to stay in contention for a Champions League spot.

GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from the Etihad Stadium…

  • Getty Images

    WINNER: Phil Foden

Rumours of the England forward's demise have been greatly exaggerated.

The Stockport Iniesta is truly back to his best and opened up the game with a mesmeric run through the best defence in the league.

He was electric throughout and also linked up superbly with his team-mates.

He had been worryingly off-form since the World Cup but has now scored four goals in his last three matches.

  • Getty

    LOSER: Newcastle

The Magpies had a spectacular first half of the season but have definitely gone off the boil lately.

Since beating Southampton to book their place in the Carabao Cup final, they have failed to win any of their last five matches in all competitions.

When coming up against top opponents, they have been found out.

They looked nailed-on to make a long-awaited return to the Champions League but those hopes are fading fast and Liverpool and Fulham are on the tails, meaning they could even miss out on European football together.

  • Getty

    WINNER: Bernardo Silva

The midfielder had a bit of a point to prove after not getting on at Bournemouth last week and beginning today's match on the bench.

He did just that, giving City the energy needed to stem Newcastle's wave of attacks in a difficult spell for the hosts.

Immediately after coming on, Silva pressed Nick Pope, forcing the goalkeeper into a poor kick which led to a rapid City break.

Silva finished the move with a confident strike and the fans gleefully sang his name in gratitude.

It will be a lot harder for Guardiola to leave him out against Crystal Palace next week.

    LOSER: Callum Wilson

Newcastle were definitely second best here but they will also wonder how differently things could have gone had they taken their chances.

Their best fell to Wilson, who was unmarked in the first half when the ball dropped perfectly for him in the area.

But he took his eye off the ball and completely missed it, watching in horror as it bobbled away towards the touchline.

He was unable to trouble City's powerful defence for the rest of the match.

Everton’s King tipped to join Celtic

Carlo Ancelotti must not block Joshua King from joining Celtic in the summer as the striker has proven to be a flop since signing for Everton.

What’s the word?

While speaking with Football Insider, former Leeds striker Noel Whelan has backed King to secure a move to Parkhead once his Everton contract expires.

The 29-year-old moved to Goodison Park on deadline day of the winter transfer market after Everton paid Bournemouth £2m to take over the final six months of his £45,000-per-week deal.

The Norway international had expressed that his intentions would be to earn a longer-term deal, as his mid-season arrival featured clauses which could return a new contract, but he is expected to be released at the end of the campaign.

Whelan believes that Celtic may emerge as a potential destination for King in the summer, with the Hoops in advanced talks with his former Cherries boss Eddie Howe over taking up the vacant head coach position in Glasgow.

“You look to Ancelotti, you look to a lot of managers – they bring in their own,” Whelan said. “It’s no different to Jose Mourinho and [Sergio] Reguilon from Real Madrid. He has seen him, seen him work, he knows what he’s getting.

“That’ll be no different for Eddie Howe. We know Josh King’s available. Everton aren’t taking that on. He would be fantastic for the Scottish game and Celtic. Maybe he’ll delve into the market for that one, he knows what’s happening in the summertime.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/the-latest-everton-news-gossip-and-views” title=”The latest Everton news and views!”]

“It wouldn’t surprise me if he delves into the market and takes people that he knows and trusts. That’s what managers generally do, using their own contacts and the relationships they have with players. That would only be a positive for Celtic.”

Should Everton let King leave?

Ancelotti signed King in the winter market this year as he sought to acquire attacking depth following Cenk Tosun returning to Besiktas and Anthony Gordon joining Preston North End in loan deals, yet never seeing the summer free agent proving to be a clinical product.

“I think he’s the right profile that we needed,” the Italian said, via quotes shared by the Liverpool Echo. “The fact that we let Tosun go to Turkey, we let Anthony to have experience, we needed a profile for the position in front. We were looking at him in the summer.

“We didn’t sign him to have more goals. We signed him to have a powerful, fast player – not to score more goals. We signed him to have more options in front, with him we have more options. Of course, we need goals, but we have players who can score goals.”

No matter how Ancelotti framed King’s arrival at the time, the 29-year-old has proven to be a total dud on whom Everton will have wasted £2.9m by the time his contract expires.

He will have been at Goodison Park for 21 weeks when his £45,000-a-week deal expires on June 30, costing club owner Farhad Moshiri £945,000 in wages – on top of the £2m paid to Bournemouth – on a player who is yet to start or provide any goal involvement in royal blue.

The versatile 54-cap forward has made each of his eight Everton appearances to date from the bench, with an average time on the pitch of just 15 minutes thanks to three cameo showings of six or fewer minutes and only one exceeding the half-hour mark.

He was even overlooked for a central role while Dominic Calvert-Lewin was sidelined with a hamstring injury against Fulham and Manchester City, with King instead brought on for Alex Iwobi against the Cottagers and Tom Davies against the Citizens to fill in on the right wing.

If Howe has any interest in being reunited with King at Celtic, Ancelotti cannot stand in the attacker’s way and must instead search the transfer market for a replacement.

AND in other news, Everton face a £17m price tag to land a 26-y/o leader once considered to be “one of the strongest”

Keane given glowing recommendation

Roy Keane has the ‘personality’ required to lead Celtic going forward, according to former Hoops manager Martin O’Neill.

O’Neill, who led Celtic to three Scottish titles and a UEFA Cup final over five years in Glasgow, was speaking to BBC Scotland Sportsound.

Betting was suspended on Keane’s potential appointment on Friday, but The Times reported two days later that the Manchester United legend was ‘unlikely’ to take up the post.

O’Neill seems to fear that it would be a mistake to overlook the 49-year-old, who has worked under the ex-Hoops boss as assistant manager in the Republic of Ireland and Nottingham Forest setups.

£30m Champions League prize on the line for Celtic

“Next season is really big because it’s automatic qualification for the Champions League,” O’Neill said.

“That’s a massive extra prize. It’s the 30 million. Maybe it bolsters the argument that Celtic are taking their time – that whoever is in there is able and capable of facing Rangers in the big contest.

“Roy Keane’s got the personality, for a start. A massive player, iconic figure in the game. He’s also very strong-willed. But he’s got the capacity to motivate the players.

“Roy’s learned a great deal over the years. Dermot [Desmond, Celtic’s principal shareholder] is a strong-willed man himself. He’ll know what is necessary.”

Keane has been out of the managerial hotseat since 2011, when he left Ipswich Town.

Whoever succeeds Neil Lennon at Celtic Park faces a daunting task. The Hoops trail their arch-rivals Rangers by a full 20 points in the table, and Steven Gerrard’s men have not lost a league game all season.

Transfer Tavern verdict

With £30m potentially on the line as O’Neill has outlined, Celtic probably shouldn’t be taking this big a gamble on their next manager.

Eddie Howe, who did a remarkable job at Bournemouth and is now the favourite for the job, would appear a more sensible appointment, given his impressive track record at Premier League level in recent times.
