Jordan Campbell drops Santiago Moreno claim

The Athletic’s Rangers correspondent Jordan Campbell has made a claim regarding the Ibrox side’s interest in Colombian winger Santiago Moreno, which may well disappoint Gers fans.

What’s the word?

Rangers were linked with a move for the America de Cali winger, along with Leeds United and Southampton, by The Telegraph earlier this year, but it would appear that a summer move to Ibrox is no longer on the cards for the 21-year-old, after Campbell shared his views in an article for The Athletic, saying:

“One player who has been linked is America de Cali winger Santiago Moreno, but I understand there aren’t legs in this one for now. The Colombian is a good prospect at age 21 and would cost less than £2m thanks to a buyout clause but, although the Colombian market is one Rangers have been exploring in the last 18 months, this is not one that is on the cards.”

Would Moreno have been a good signing?

Moreno has caught the eye with his performances in Colombia and has been likened to Liverpool winger Sadio Mane with his style of play, which certainly suggests that he could’ve been a solid addition to Gerrard’s side for both now and the long-term future.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-rangers-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Rangers transfer rumours and news!”]

In 51 appearances for the Liga Dimayor side, the youngster has contributed 10 goals and seven assists, which is an impressive return for someone so young, whilst he also has experience in the Copa Libertadores, which is the highest level of competition in South American club football.

Although Gerrard is already well-stocked in the winger department, with the likes of Ryan Kent, Scott Wright, Ianis Hagi and Fashion Sakala all likely to be regulars there next season, there is no doubt that Moreno could have been a good, cheap addition for the future at Ibrox.

Therefore, Rangers fans should be gutted that the 21-year-old won’t be moving to Ibrox this summer, as it would not be a surprise to see him become a success elsewhere given the interest that is being shown in him.

Anderson keen on West Ham exit

An update has emerged on West Ham midfielder Felipe Anderson, regarding what he wants to do this summer.

What’s the talk?

According to Corriere dello Sport (Print edition, July 3rd, page 27), as transcribed by Hammers News, West Ham winger Felipe Anderson is hoping to seal a return to Lazio this summer after falling out of favour under David Moyes.

The report claims that the Brazilian is interested in completing a transfer to the Serie A side within the next week, in time to take part in a full pre-season for the Italian giants to give him the best chance of hitting the ground running.

Time for him to leave

Moyes must ruthlessly axe Anderson from the club this summer by allowing him to leave to join Lazio, or any other interested club if that move is unable to happen.

The ex-Everton boss made it clear that the attacker was not part of his plans last season by sending him out on loan to Porto and he failed to make an impression in Liga NOS.

Anderson failed to produce a single goal or assist in nine appearances for Porto and was only handed one start in the league. This shows that he does not deserve a chance to redeem himself at West Ham and that the time is right for him to depart from the London Stadium, as he has gone two seasons in a row without proving his quality on a consistent basis.

In the 2019/20 campaign, Anderson managed one goal and four assists in 25 Premier League appearances for the Hammers.

Former West Ham player Frank McAvennie criticised Anderson earlier this year and labelled him as a “luxury” player, bemoaning his lack of work off the ball to fight for his side.

He told Football FanCast:

“He’s got to go. Let the boy go. They bought him in and he’s a luxury player. I’ve never seen him go into a tackle, never mind win one. Talent in abundance, but he’s gone to Porto on loan, but has done the same there – just strolled about. He can’t come back to West Ham; they’ll want him off the wage bill.”

This is why the £85k-per-week dud needs to be axed from the club. West Ham cannot afford to carry players through matches and Moyes already has the likes of Michail Antonio, Jarrod Bowen, Manuel Lanzini, Pablo Fornals and Said Benrahma who can all play out wide.

Therefore, selling Anderson would not be a blow to the club and any funds recouped by his sale could be used to fund additional signings to bolster Moyes’ squad, which is another reason why this could be a shrewd move.

It’s time to be ruthless, Anderson has to be sold.

Tottenham Hotspur: Paul Robinson drops Aymeric Laporte verdict

Paul Robinson is enthralled by the possibility of Spurs receiving £100m or more plus Spanish international Aymeric Laporte in exchange for Harry Kane, who is courting serious attention from Manchester City [Football Insider].

Moving into 2021/22, Spurs will be desperate to cling on to their prize assets in order to sustain a challenge for Champions League qualification.

Defenders Joe Rodon and Matt Doherty have been heavily linked with departures from the Tottenham Hotspur stadium [The Sun].

However, arguably the most high-profile exit link in English football this summer has been the transfer saga surrounding Kane following Manchester City’s rejected £100m bid for the 27-year-old [CBS Sports].

With rumours swirling that the Citizens could use Laporte, Raheem Sterling or Gabriel Jesus as part of the deal [CBS Sports], Robinson has expressed his excitement in particular regard to the notion of the Spain defender moving to London in this transfer window.

The Latest: Robinson delivers positive verdict

Speaking in an interview with Football Insider, the former Lilywhites goalkeeper stated: “There is talk of £100million plus Sterling or Laporte. To me that is looking like a great deal for Spurs.

“Laporte is a world-class centre-half and we know that Spurs are in desperate need of a centre-half. Laporte is the main player at the back for Spain now and he has done brilliantly since he moved to Manchester City.

“Harry Kane was at the peak of his powers last season but he is 28 and has had his fair share of injury problems. You will probably only get 25 games out of him a season for the next four years.

“If you can get £100million plus one of City’s top players then it is a good deal for Spurs.”

The Verdict: Could soften Kane blow

Robinson correctly identifies that Laporte would be a “world class” addition to what has been a problem position for Spurs in recent months.

In 2020/21, the defender played an important part in Manchester City’s double-winning season, completing 27 appearances and notching two goals across all competitions [Transfermarkt].

Of course, there would be an ironic nature to any prospective swap deal bringing the 27-year-old to Tottenham. In the previous term, his standout action for his current employers was his winning goal for City in the Carabao Cup final, subjecting Spurs to a 1-0 defeat at Wembley [BBC].

If Tottenham are going to lose their club captain in a record-shattering deal, receiving Laporte as part of any transaction would surely be a real boost to supporters ahead of the forthcoming season.

In other news, Spurs have opened talks with a ‘promising’ 22 y/o defender.

‘Come on, man!’ – Rodri complains about lack of VAR checks for Man City in draw against Chelsea

  • City still sit third in Premier League table
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Rodri was unhappy that, in his opinion, there had not been enough VAR checks in favour of City in the game and that Chelsea were on the receiving end of more reviews. He went on to suggest that when City have a VAR check, the referee does not spend enough time studying the decision. The Spanish midfielder scored late to peg Chelsea back after former City star Raheem Sterling had put the Blues in front.

    WHAT RODRI SAID

Speaking to , Rodri complained: "I don't want to talk abut the referee, but I don't remember a game with so many VAR checks and none for us, come on man. You always see the face of referee and it's now 'move on, move on'."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

It is understandable that Rodri is frustrated, having dropped two points on a day when both Arsenal and Liverpool secured victories. City more than anyone know how important every point can be in the race for the title and with Arsenal winning 5-0 away at Burnley, Rodri may be feeling the heat. Chelsea's Levi Colwill appeared to handle the ball in injury time in the penalty area, but the claims of handball were waved away – much to Rodri and his team-mates' anger.

Transfer update emerges on Sander Berge

A number of clubs are reconsidering a move for Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Football League World, who claimed that Liverpool, Aston Villa, Arsenal and Napoli are all concerned about the midfielder’s injury history ahead of a potential move for the 23-year-old in the summer transfer window.

It is reported that, with the Blades’ demanding a fee of £35m in order to part with the Norway international, the interested parties hold some reservations about spending such a large sum on a player who suffered a significant injury last season.

Fans should be buzzing

Considering just how impressive Berge has been since joining Sheffield United from KRC Genk back in January 2020, reports that the clubs interested in signing the midfielder are having doubts about making a move this summer should be music to the ears of Sheffield United fans.

With Slavisa Jokanovic hoping to secure an immediate return to the Premier League with the Blades next year, keeping hold of the £16.2m-rated gem would seem to significantly increase the Serbian’s chances of going on to achieve this feat, as it is not hard to imagine Berge thriving for United in the Championship.

Indeed, while last season saw the 23-year-old spend long spells on the sidelines due to his aforementioned injury, the £38,000-per-week Norwegian proved in his first few months at the club just how impressive a footballer he is.

The defensive midfielder made 14 Premier League appearances in the club’s 2019/20 campaign, in which he scored one goal, registered one assist and created one big chance for his teammates.

The former Genk man also averaged 0.7 interceptions and 1.6 tackles and won 5.5 duels per game that season, with his metrics culminating to earn him a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.90, ranking him as United’s seventh-best performer in the top flight.

As such, it is an easy argument to make that, all being well with his fitness, Berge should easily better these already impressive statistics after dropping down a division with Sheffield United, with the player whom Chris Wilder dubbed a “complete midfielder” very much having the potential to be a key man in a hopeful promotion push for the Blades next season.

Wolves transfer update on Youssef En-Nesyri

Wolves are reportedly ‘willing to offer’ €40m (£34.4m) to sign Youssef En-Nesyri in the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Jimenez cover needed

The Midlands club definitely need to look at signing sufficient cover for Raul Jimenez for the 2021/22 season, given that the Mexican missed the majority of last term because of a head injury.

Young Fabio Silva was thrown in at the deep end in his absence, and so the Molineux club could do with some more experienced backup just in case Jimenez suffers another bad injury.

The Latest: En-Nesyri eyed

As per Spanish media outlet AS (via Sport Witness), Wolves are ‘willing to offer’ a transfer fee in the region of €40m (£34.4m) in order to sign En-Nesyri from Sevilla.

However, the Morocco international would prefer to stay at the La Liga club, although they would reportedly be willing to sell him if the financial need arises.

The Verdict: Sign

En-Nesyri is a proven scorer, having found the back of the net 24 times in 52 games across all competitions last season (Transfermarkt).

The striker has also received high praise in the past. Sky Sports’ Spanish football commentator Terry Gibson called him a ‘world-beater’ at times back in March, while La Liga expert Euan McTear recently described him as ‘a bit like Benzema’, implying that he is a centre-forward who is purely focused on scoring goals.

A fee of £34.4m is a lot of money for Wolves, with only Silva and Jimenez costing more than that amount for an incoming player in the club’s history, but En-Nesyri could well be the difference between them qualifying for European competition again next year and stalling to another bottom-half finish like in 2020/21.
