Division Two promotion hopefuls Lancashire were frustrated by a fine century from Worcestershire’s Moeen Ali at New Road. Moeen hit 104 to help lift his side to 287 following a spirited fightback by the league leaders, who were boosted by a four-wicket haul by paceman Kyle Hogg.At the end of the opening day Lancashire’s opening pair of Glen Chapple and Luis Reece safely negotiated a maiden over from Alan Richardson before proceedings were brought to a close.Moeen’s eye-catching innings followed his brilliant 114 earlier in the week in a Yorkshire Bank 40 Group A match against his former county Warwickshire at Edgbaston. He also made an impression last week by scoring 61 for England Lions in a two-day game against the Australians at Northampton.Lancashire also found the 26-year-old difficult to dislodge in their opening Championship match of the campaign when he made 78 in a rain-hit draw against Worcestershire at Emirates Old Trafford.Moeen, whose knock today hoisted him well past the 1,000-run mark in the Championship this summer, reached three figures off 194 balls with 13 fours. It was the 11th first-class century of his career and his third in the Championship this term.Worcestershire made 38 in 13 overs before their opening pair were split up by seamer Tom Smith’s third delivery which accounted for Daryl Mitchell, whose outside edge was snapped up in the slips by Andrea Agathangelou. Mitchell’s dismissal for 22, following a string of impressive limited-overs scores, signalled the start of a half-century partnership between his fellow opener Matt Pardoe and Moeen. They put on 54 in 17 overs before the penultimate delivery before lunch, bowled by left-arm medium-pacer Reece, had Pardoe caught behind for 35 by Gareth Cross to leave the hosts 92 for 2 off 30 overs at the breakThilan Samaraweera struggled to get into his stride and suffered a soft dismissal when, after leaving alone a Hogg delivery, ambled out of his ground to allow the alert Cross to stump him for 6 off 32 balls. His careless departure failed to unsettle Moeen who instantly found a reliable partner in teenager Tom Fell. They joined forces to complete a half-century stand before the taking their side to 196 for three off 64 overs at tea. They went on to add 91 in 29 overs before another slice of carelessness resulted in Fell being removed for 43 when he turned Arron Lilley to square leg and wandered out of his ground to enable Reece to run him out with a smart throw in to Cross. Next ball Ross Whiteley, making his Championship debut for Worcestershire, was bowled by Lilley before the visitors continued their fightback by ousting Joe Leach.Moeen finally fell during the first over with the new ball when he nicked Hogg to Cross after facing 205 balls. Jack Shantry and Ben Cox both fell cheaply as Worcestershire lost six wickets for 37 runs in 15 overs before Richardson and Graeme Cessford topped up the home side’s tally with an entertaining last-wicket stand worth 35.

No segundo tempo o Leão voltou melhor.

Steyn likely to be fit for final game

Dale Steyn is likely to be fit for South Africa’s final group match against West Indies on June 14, after recovering from a side strain from the warm-up match against Pakistan

Dale Steyn had a successful net session in Cardiff•ICC

South Africa’s hopes of reaching the Champions Trophy semi-finals received a boost with the news that pace spearhead Dale Steyn is likely to be fit for their virtual quarter-final against West Indies on June 14. Given their poor record in knockout matches, South Africa will look to the experience of their best bowler to help them win.Today, Steyn bowled at full pace for the first time since straining his side in last Monday’s warm-up match against Pakistan at The Oval. He missed South Africa’s first two matches of the tournament while undergoing rest and rehabilitation, which has so far gone according to plan.”Dale is progressing quite well. He came through his net session today without any discomfort,” Mohammed Moosajee, South Africa’s team manager, who is also a doctor, said. “We will watch him overnight to see if he wakes up with any stiffness. If he comes through tomorrow’s practice then he should be available.”If Steyn is fit, South Africa will have something of a selection dilemma. Their three seamers – Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Chris Morris and Ryan McLaren – performed admirably against Pakistan. If the team management’s hand was forced, Morris would probably be culled purely because of his inexperience.Morris understands that, and promised that if he was benched, South Africa, could be assured of having a “bloody good 12th man,” in him, similar to what Steyn was against Pakistan. Not only did he carry on refreshments for his team-mates, he also regularly relayed instructions.”He was loving it. There was a stage where he threw a bit of abuse at one of the batsmen. That’s Dale’s character,” Morris revealed. “He was brilliant. He kept reminding us, ‘There’s a run-out coming’. He kept encouraging us. He’s a ball of energy.”Steyn’s involvement is the embodiment of what South Africa have called their team culture since Kirsten took over two years ago. It centres on inclusiveness and knowledge sharing, and with South Africa at a crunch stage of a major tournament, Steyn could provide plenty of the latter.”Gary has placed a lot of emphasis on the reserve guys playing a massive part. Having Dale run out there with ideas and options is massively important. He has played with and against a lot of these guys for a number of years so the information and the guidance he offers is invaluable,” Russell Domingo, Kirsten’s successor and the current assistant coach, said. “The guys feed off Dale. He is a mentor, a great leader of the bowling unit, and he is just a good bloke, so guys enjoy getting advice from him.”For that reason, should Steyn be declared fit, it is far more likely that South Africa will play all four seamers and leave out one of their specialist spinners, as they did in the first match against India in Cardiff. Left-arm spinners Robin Peterson and Aaron Phangiso played alongside JP Duminy in Birmingham on a pitch that took turn, but South Africa are not expecting similar conditions at Sophia Gardens, despite the role spinners have played in the competition thus far.”Everyone expected the ball to swing a bit more than it has. Maybe because of the cold conditions, the ball hasn’t done as much as we thought,” Domingo said. “I know they are saying this is quite a dry June, so that’s showing in the wickets. The spinners are in the game big time.”It’s been a while since South Africa played three spinners so I’d say it has been a bit surprising that the ball hasn’t done more in the first 20 overs. But this wicket lends itself to a little bit more pace and bounce than Birmingham, and with the overhead conditions around, the ball might do something. The wicket might be a little bit sportier.”With South Africa hopeful their seamers will come into the game more, they will have to decide which spinner to leave out. Despite Phangiso bowling his full quota of 10 overs against Pakistan, as opposed to Robin Peterson’s four, it appears Phangiso will carry drinks. “Robbie is a big wicket-taker, a big-game player, and has contributed in every aspect: batting, bowling, fielding,” Domingo said, while also confirming Peterson is not carrying any niggles, and had not bowled his quota for tactical reasons only.

Rogers and Faulkner in Ashes squad

Brad Haddin and Chris Rogers are the hardened campaigners identified to unify Australia’s Ashes tourists, while the young allrounder James Faulkner’s inclusion has intensified pressure on Shane Watson

Daniel Brettig and Brydon Coverdale24-Apr-2013Brad Haddin and Chris Rogers are the hardened campaigners identified to unify Australia’s Ashes tourists, while the young allrounder James Faulkner’s inclusion in the squad for England has intensified pressure on Shane Watson to earn his place ahead of the series. In a touring party constructed sensibly for the present moment rather than speculatively for the future, Haddin was confirmed as Australia’s vice-captain for the Ashes tour, while the 35-year-old opener Rogers rocketed back into Test contention five years after his only match in the baggy green.Rogers and Haddin added a valuable element of experience and leadership to the 16-man squad, qualities so often lacking on a horrid India tour earlier this year following the retirements of Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey. John Inverarity, the national selector, left the captain Michael Clarke and the coach Mickey Arthur to devise the batting order, but Rogers appears likely to claim a top-order spot, perhaps as No. 3 behind David Warner and Ed Cowan.”From the players available we believe Chris Rogers was very deserving of selection,” Inverarity said. “We selected seven batsmen and we believe he was one who came into that slot, the other six all went to India.”With Michael and Ricky going there was a gap in experience, and Chris nicely fills that – he’s made nearly 20,000 first-class runs. The first Test starts in 11 weeks’ time, there’s a lot of water to go under the bridge, but Michael as captain and Mickey Arthur as coach in particular will sort that out with batting order and which of the seven are selected. Michael and I have no concerns about any of those batsmen batting anywhere in the top six.”We’re always very mindful of looking forward and selecting accordingly at times, but quite obviously this time it had always been our intention to revert to getting the absolute strongest side for this contest, that’s been uppermost in our minds and that’s the way we’ve selected.”Clarke expressed satisfaction that the squad chosen had an ideal balance of players young and old, in keeping with the profiles of successful teams he had observed or been a part of in the past.”The best teams I’ve seen in any sport have a good mix of youth and experience. I think this squad has that mix,” Clarke said. “I’m confident we have a good group of players that can learn from one another as well as utilise the coaches that we have.Brad Haddin is back as Australia’s vice-captain•Getty Images

“If you look through a lot of players’ careers you go through ups and downs, you have tough tours and that makes you a better player and a stronger person, and I believe we’ve learned a lot from India, as individuals but also as a team. We’re going to be playing in a lot different conditions to what we faced in India, against a completely different opposition, and I have faith that with the learning and experience of India, we’ll have success in England.”Faulkner’s inclusion added fire and versatility to the squad, illustrated by a past summer in which the Tasmanian showed both the nerve to sledge Chris Gayle and the composure to guide the Tigers to the Sheffield Shield. Inverarity described Faulkner as the sort of player who “gets things done”, a phrase that cannot have escaped the attention of Watson, who will be expected to score heavily in the warm-up matches in Taunton and Worcester to retain his place.”James Faulkner has impressed us all in recent months and recent seasons,” Inverarity said. “He’s a very competitive cricketer who gets things done – he’s never long out of the game. His batting has improved significantly, he’s made runs, he’s formed partnerships and he’s always lurking and taking a wicket.”While the India tourists Mitchell Johnson, Glenn Maxwell, Xavier Doherty and Moises Henriques were unsurprisingly left out, Steven Smith was the most unfortunate casualty, having made doughty runs in each of the final two Tests. However it was felt that Rogers and Usman Khawaja provided better batting options in England. Smith had to be content with a place as vice-captain on the Australia A tour that precedes the Ashes.Jackson Bird returned to national duty after leaving the Indian tour due to injury and Ryan Harris was also recalled, having missed most of the Australian home summer as he recovered from shoulder surgery. Peter Siddle, James Pattinson and Mitchell Starc completed a muscular pace quintet. The incumbent Test wicketkeeper Matthew Wade was named in the squad, but Inverarity said the intention was for the new vice-captain, Haddin, to be the first-choice gloveman.”In regards to the vice-captaincy, we feel it’s important to have a senior, seasoned player support Michael at this time,” Inverarity said. “When Shane Watson advised of his decision to stand down, the NSP viewed Brad as the exceptional candidate to step into this leadership void. Matthew Wade is a very good cricketer and remains central to our plans for the future.”The selectors also announced an Australia A squad to play in England ahead of the Ashes and including several of the team’s frontline bowlers with the aim of giving them as much time as possible to adjust to the English conditions. Haddin will captain the A team, which includes Nathan Lyon, the only spinner in the Ashes squad, as well as the slow left-armer Ashton Agar. Inverarity said the legspinner Fawad Ahmed, who is unlikely to be eligible to play for Australia until near the end of the Ashes series, was still in Ashes contention.”Fawad Ahmed, those of us who have seen him bowl have been very impressed with him,” Inverarity said. “He’s a very good legspinner and yes he does remain in contention. We’ve selected 16 players and we state now that should the need arise we will add to the squad. We don’t know when he’s going to become eligible, but there’s always that possibility.”Ashes squad Michael Clarke (capt), Brad Haddin (vice-capt, wk), David Warner, Ed Cowan, Phillip Hughes, Shane Watson, Usman Khawaja, Chris Rogers, Matthew Wade (wk), James Faulkner, Ryan Harris, Peter Siddle, James Pattinson, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Jackson Bird.Australia A squad Brad Haddin (capt), Steven Smith (vice-capt), Ashton Agar, Jackson Bird, Alex Doolan, Ryan Harris, Moises Henriques, Usman Khawaja, Nathan Lyon, Nic Maddinson, James Pattinson, Chadd Sayers, Peter Siddle, Jordan Silk.

Mushfiqur wants Bangladesh to play more Tests

Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim has made an appeal for more Tests for his side after they were much-improved competitors in the two-Test series in Sri Lanka

Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim has made an appeal for more Tests for his side after they were much-improved competitors in the two-Test series in Sri Lanka. Bangladesh lost the series 0-1 but had positive results, forcing a draw in Galle, their first in this country. The visitors lost the second Test in Colombo, but there were periods at the Premadasa when they were on par with Sri Lanka. The performance prompted Mushfiqur to ask for more chances to play Tests.”It doesn’t matter if we do well or not, we will have more opportunity if we get more Tests to play,” Mushfiqur said. “Those who in authority, I would ask them to give us more Tests. We can show that we can play good, consistent Test cricket.”It is up to the cricket board whether we play a three-Test series, but we must play eight to ten Tests in a year. You can play as many ODIs and T20s you want, but Test cricket is the ultimate. You have periods of long struggle in Test cricket, it builds character and confidence.”Bangladesh have only played two three-match series since gaining Test status in 2000, and the last one was nearly six years ago in Sri Lanka. Bangladesh played just two Tests in 2012, and are scheduled to play four more this year.Questions remain, however, over the Bangladesh players’ durability in Test cricket. They have shown, in these two matches in Sri Lanka, the ability to dominate a session, or even a day, but to string together consistently impressive performances over several days is still a challenge.”We are working on this but we haven’t reached a stage where we can play 10 days of consistent cricket out of 14-15 days,” Mushfiqur said. “The focus that is required to face deliveries pitching on the same spot requires mental and technical skills.”They bowl maidens, build the pressure on our batsmen. When they are batting, they are aware a bad ball is around the corner, so they wait and give enough respect to the good ball. But we have to play a lot more than just the two or four [Tests] per year.”Mushfiqur said the bowling attack needed to develop, but had to be given time. Bangladesh’s highest wicket-taker in the series, Sohag Gazi, has completed only four Test matches, and without Shakib Al Hasan the attack has only shown flashes of potential.”We made only 240 [in Colombo] against a team like Sri Lanka, so that wasn’t good enough. We don’t have a bowling attack that can bowl them out for 200. [Kumar] Sangakkara and [Dinesh] Chandimal played really well, they didn’t give us a chance,” Mushfiqur said. “In the second innings, some of us were set but we got out. The spinners should have bowled better on this wicket, which Rangana Herath showed by bowling in one spot.”Bangladesh’s next Tests are against Zimbabwe in April, but they have an ODI series and Twenty20 left to play against Sri Lanka over the next 11 days.

Watson admits batting form a concern

Shane Watson has endured a lean series as a batsman in India, and hopes to start bowling again before the Ashes

Brydon Coverdale25-Mar-2013

Shane Watson endured a lean series in India by his standards•BCCI

Shane Watson has conceded that he risks being dropped unless he can find a way to start scoring big runs again, after yet another disappointing series with the bat. Watson, who was the acting captain in the final Test in Delhi, managed only 99 runs at 16.50 during the Indian tour. This continued a long, unproductive batting stretch, where in the past two years he has made 627 Test runs at 24.11, and has not posted a century. His lack of runs was even more noticeable during this series because he had chosen not to bowl in an effort to stay fit and string together as much cricket as possible after an injury-plagued couple of seasons. Before the series, the captain, Michael Clarke, said that as a specialist batsman, Watson would face competition from a much larger pool of players for a place in the team, as compared to when he plays as an allrounder.”There is no doubt that I need to score runs,” Watson said at the end of the Indian tour. “As a batsman who’s batting in the top four at the moment, I need to score runs. Unfortunately, during this series I’ve scored nowhere near the [amount of] runs that I’ve wanted to, to be able to contribute to the team’s performance.”There’s no doubt cricket’s a performance-based game. If I’m not scoring runs or taking wickets, then you can’t expect to be picked. There are no secrets about it. You can’t hide behind anything, apart from your performance. In this series I’ve not performed anywhere near where I’ve wanted to. I’m looking forward to being able to continue to play and hopefully get some continuity with my game over the next few months, and be in some good touch when the selectors announce the Ashes squad.”Watson’s case for being part of the XI for the first Ashes Test will be strengthened by the fact that he is expected to be bowling again by then, and his medium-pace has a habit of providing breakthroughs at important times for the Australians. But bowling has also generally been responsible for the many injuries that have prevented him from playing even half the amount of Tests he could have.He missed all of the 2011-12 home summer of Tests due to calf and hamstring problems, and played only half of Australia’s home Tests in 2012-13, again due to a calf injury. However, Watson intends to slowly start building up his bowling workload during the second half of the IPL, and hopes to be in a position to bowl unrestricted during the Ashes, which starts in July.”One thing I have realised is how much I do miss bowling, and it has been a plan over the last two or three months to get my body to a position where I can get back into bowling again, and hopefully hold together for the cricket we have coming up,” Watson said. “There is no doubt coming here as a specialist batsman has not worked out anywhere near where I wanted it to.”It didn’t work in that regard, but in the end I am an allrounder, I love being an allrounder. At times it has been hard not to bowl knowing what I can contribute to the game. I know I won’t always be able to score runs or take wickets, but if I’m an allrounder, I’ve got more [of a] chance to contribute to the team’s performance and success. I have to stay on top of my body so that I can play the amount of cricket I want to.”
