Ball: Rafael Benitez could hand Jonjoe Kenny an Everton lifeline

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, former Everton defender Michael Ball believes Jonjoe Kenny could be given a chance by Rafael Benitez this upcoming season.

The 24-year-old right-back has spent the last couple of campaigns out on loan at Celtic and German outfit Schalke.

Kenny has since been linked with a surprise move to Arsenal, with the MailOnline claiming that he is one option being considered in the event that Hector Bellerin departs the Emirates this summer.

If the Englishman decides to remain at Everton, though, Ball thinks he could be given an opportunity under Benitez.

“He’s going to have a good opportunity now,” the ex-Everton player told FFC. “Maybe he comes back to pre-season fully fit and ready to go and Rafa might give him that confidence. ‘Yeah, you could be our next number two. You’ll take over from Seamus Coleman or be a great back-up for Seamus.’ ”

With Coleman turning 33 this year, perhaps Kenny could return to succeed the Irishman or at least provide cover for him.

It probably would not be a total shock, though, to see the former England U21 international leave the club on another loan.

Talk coming out of the Netherlands suggests the Toffees are pushing hard to sign another right-back in Euro 2020 star Denzel Dumfries from PSV Eindhoven.

Lyon roars back from selection precipice

Nathan Lyon came close to being discarded for the Adelaide Test. Given the opportunity, he banked on scoreboard pressure and his variations in pace and spin to pin South Africa down

Daniel Brettig in Adelaide26-Nov-2016Nathan Lyon collected his baggy green cap from the umpire in mid-afternoon with figures of 0 for 27 from five overs and a glum look on his face. His most recent six balls had been taken for 10 runs by Hashim Amla, and it was no surprise when the captain Steven Smith chose to remove him from the attack.Watching on from the outfield as the pacemen were rotated, Lyon must have pondered his situation. He had broken a lengthy wicket drought in the first innings, but the thought of a single victim in the course of five first-class innings can only have been the slightest consolation. A career tally of 214 Test wickets offered more robust reason for self-belief, but increasingly Lyon has seemed alone in keeping the faith. He is the team’s most experienced player, and custodian of the team song. But somehow, unfairly, he had seemingly become expendable. How close did he come to being dropped for this match entirely? About as close as it is possible. Steve O’Keefe, Lyon’s New South Wales team-mate, would almost certainly have been chosen in his stead if not for the recurrence of a calf problem during the Sheffield Shield round played between Hobart and Adelaide. On local radio, the coach Darren Lehmann said as much: “Lyon was in because we couldn’t select O’Keefe, he was injured beforehand.”Having made it narrowly to Adelaide, much of the talk leading into the match surrounded how Lyon could find himself making way for a fourth seamer in either Jackson Bird or Chadd Sayers. All despite Lyon’s own fine record in Adelaide, and the absence of an allrounder making it vital to have someone capable of long spells. At a ceremony to name the players’ viewing area after the loveable Barry “Nugget” Rees, Lyon prompted the guest of honour to nominate him as a favourite player. Laughs were had, of course, but Lyon was certainly in need of some love.So close to being discarded despite being Australia’s most prolific-ever offspinner, Lyon had to be pondering whether this still Adelaide night would be among his last in the national team. He has a captain in Steven Smith who does not share his predecessor Michael Clarke’s dynamism when dealing with spin bowlers, and a coaching staff that oddly does not feature a full-time spin minder – South Africa’s spinners have Claude Henderson on tour.It is true that Lyon has been able to spend time this week with John Davison, his longtime mentor and trusted confidante. That has undoubtedly helped his technique, flight, shape and spin. “It hasn’t been an emergency call,” Lyon said. “Davo’s been planning before the summer to come down to Adelaide. It’s been great to have him around, he’s someone I trust very highly and work great with him.”He’s one guy who is very handy to have in my corner. There’s a bit of that [reassurance], but Davo also challenges me to try to get better and better each and every training session that we go into. He’s just someone I can go to and say ‘What do you think about this, this and this?’ and he’ll come back and say agree or disagree and we can have a conversation.”But he still needed to find a way to get himself into the game. After a brief flirtation with David Warner’s medium pace after tea, Smith handed the ball back to Lyon. The dismissal of Amla in the interim helped Lyon, giving him a left-hander to size up in JP Duminy. The following spell brought gradual improvement from Lyon, as he worked with variations in pace and spin. A major factor in the way he was able to get into the spell was a different level of pressure from the scoreboard, after Australia’s batsmen finally produced something of substance after five matches of failures.Nathan Lyon was masterful against the nightwatchman Kyle Abbott, his efforts culminating in an lbw dismissal•Cricket Australia/Getty Images”It’s always handy to have some runs on the board, and it’s up there with the best innings by a nightwatchman that I’ve seen, so hats off to Usman,” Lyon said. “It’s been an exciting feel this week with a couple of debutants, we want to come out buzzing and prove to Australia that cricket’s in good hands.”I didn’t feel under pressure to be honest. I know on the scorecards there’s been no wickets in the columns but I feel like I’ve been bowling really well and being able to create chances. I haven’t been feeling under pressure that much to be honest. I look at this as a young, exciting team and I’ve played 60 Test matches now and I’ve got a massive role in this team.”It’s not about being different it’s about being there in a supporting role, taking a few of the younger guys under your wing and supporting them. I know how hard it is to play Test match cricket, and if someone in the team can lend that support on and off the field it’s crucial. I know Mike Hussey was my mentor when I first came in, so if I can play my role with the young guys coming in I’m more than happy to do that.”The role to Duminy was to open up an end so that Smith could return to attacking with his pacemen under the Adelaide floodlight. A straighter, quicker delivery that skidded off the pitch did just that, beating Duminy’s absent-minded flick across the line and knocking out off stump. Lyon’s auxiliary role at this point was underlined when Smith withdrew him an over later to try tandem pace to Faf du Plessis, a decision rewarded with a sliced drive off Mitchell Starc and a tremendous catch by Pete Handscomb in the gully. As stumps crept nearer, Smith returned the ball to Lyon’s hands for a critical period. Temba Bavuma and Stephen Cook had the chance to forge through to the close and keep the dangerous Quinton de Kock safe from harm. But Bavuma’s innings had grown skittish under pressure, from Starc in particular, and Lyon was able to exploit this by coaxing out a sweep, a top edge and a catch for Smith. Bavuma reviewed, somewhat oddly, but the HotSpot was clear. This whole sequence showed how match circumstances, a hint of good fortune and a supportive Adelaide crowd make as much of a difference to Lyon as anything from the ball or the pitch. Against the nightwatchman Kyle Abbott he was masterful, working a tall man over with spin and bounce, before straightening one ideally for an lbw verdict.De Kock was left to face the final few balls of the night, and for the first time all series it was Lyon who held the whip-hand. As the ball bit and spun past a groping bat, the crowd transfixed by the moment, it seemed difficult to imagine an Australian team without Lyon in it, when hours before the opposite felt true. How quickly things can change.

Man United Make £31m Bid For "Monster In The Making"

Manchester United have had an opening offer of €35m (£31m) for Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund rejected immediately, according to reports from Italy.

Which striker are Man United signing?

Man United are still keen on signing a new striker this summer, but they have recently been hit with a double blow, as journalist Alex Crook has recently reported they are set to miss out on both Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen.

Having seemingly missed out on two of their main targets, it has now been reported United could make a move for a low-cost alternative in FC Porto's Mehdi Taremi, who is said to be appreciated by manager Erik ten Hag.

And after opening concrete talks over a deal for Hojlund earlier this month, the Red Devils have now submitted their opening offer for the Atalanta forward, though they did not receive the response they were hoping for.

That is according to a report from Corriere dello Sport (via Man Utd News), which details that Man United have failed to convince Atalanta to sell their striker, after making their first bid, which amounts to €35m (£31m).

The Italian club are said to be holding out for a fee of €45m (£39m) plus €12m (£10m) in bonuses, so the two parties are quite far apart for the time being.

United may face competition in their pursuit of the Denmark international, as Juventus also have him on their radar.

How many goals has Rasmus Hojlund scored?

The 20-year-old burst onto the scene last season, scoring six goals in eight games for Sturm Graz, before completing a €17m (£15m) move to Atalanta in August, where he continued his fine form in front of goal, netting ten times in 34 appearances.

Not only has he impressed at club level, but the Dane has enjoyed a fantastic start to his international career, already scoring six goals for his country – including a hat-trick in a Euro 2024 qualifier against Finland back in March.

Atalanta's Rasmus Hojlund

Hailed as an "absolute monster in the making" by football scout Jacek Kulig, the starlet is showing all the signs that he is capable of going right to the very top. However, he should perhaps not be Man United's main striker target this summer.

In order to try and bridge the gap to Manchester City, United need to sign a striker who is already proven at the top level over a number of years and Hojlund is still at the very early stages of his career, so it would be a gamble to put all their eggs in this particular basket.

Journalist Worried After Leeds Manager Update

Leeds United journalist Conor McGilligan says he is "exceptionally worried" about the club's future should manager Regis Le Bris be appointed ahead of Daniel Farke.

What's the latest on Leeds' manager hunt?

As Leeds await the green light on their change of ownership, with 49ers Enterprises being made to wait for their takeover to be finalised by the English Football League, there is still an empty manager's seat at Elland Road.

It has been over a month since Leeds parted ways with Sam Allardyce after the coach failed to save the club from Premier League relegation, with the Whites still uncertain on who their next manager will be come the beginning of the Championship season.

Daniel Farke is the favourite to take over in Yorkshire and is an obvious candidate given his two successful promotion campaigns with Norwich City, while another shortlisted name in Patrick Vieira is out of the running having agreed to take charge of Strasbourg in Ligue 1.

However, there have also been links with another French top-flight manager in recent days, with Lorient's Regis Le Bris being touted with a move to the Whites.

Le Bris guided Lorient to a tenth-placed Ligue 1 finish last season, winning 15, drawing ten and losing 13 of his 38 league games. Les Murles won eight of their opening ten matches but fell away in the second part of the campaign.

What did McGilligan say?

Journalist Conor McGilligan, speaking on the One Leeds Fan Channel, believes that opting for the inexperienced Le Bris over the proven Farke would be a poor decision for the club, expressing his concern over the managerial situation.

"Regis Le Bris was someone who we spoke about on the channel a while ago, and he was being reported about a month ago, so whether or not it's just agent talk, it's speculative and all this sort of stuff, you'd hope that," said McGilligan.

He added: "You have literally got a proven manager in the Championship, who was in the Bundesliga, finished mid-table in the Bundesliga last season, has an excellent points-per-game ratio and has won the Championship twice at a canter.

"[If] we are going for an unknown Regis Le Bris, who has done okay in Lorient for one season, and that's kind of up for debate as well, I would be exceptionally worried, exceptionally worried. And then the direction of the club completely changes because Regis Le Bris will have completely different targets to Daniel Farke."

McGilligan also suggests that the recent arrival of recruitment chief Nick Hammond, who he claims mainly focuses on players in the United Kingdom, points toward Farke's appointment looking more likely.

With Leeds' opening fixture against Cardiff City just over a month away and pre-season on the horizon, the club need to act quickly to bring in a new coach that can guide them back to the Premier League.

BCB president behind Mehedi Hasan's inclusion for ODIs

Ten days after announcing that it was his decision to drop Mahmudullah for the Colombo Test, BCB president Nazmul Hassan has said he was behind the decision to pick Mehedi Hasan for the ODIs against Sri Lanka

Mohammad Isam26-Mar-2017Ten days after announcing that it was his decision to drop Mahmudullah for the Colombo Test, BCB president Nazmul Hassan has said he was behind the decision to pick Mehedi Hasan for the ODIs against Sri Lanka.Mehedi had returned to Dhaka from Colombo on March 20 with the other Test players who were not part of the ODI squad that was announced the previous week. But three days later he was added to the ODI side, for the first time in his career.Hassan said that he first called chief selector Minhajul Abedin, telling him to include Mehedi in the ODI squad, before calling the player himself to ask him to make plans to return to Sri Lanka. He said Mehedi’s inclusion in the playing XI for the first ODI was only decided on only after the team arrived at the Dambulla ground; there was discussion around whether left-arm spinner Sunzamul Islam could be added to the XI instead.”I called up [Minhajul Abedin] Nannu to send over [Mehedi Hasan] Miraz,” Hassan said. “I found out he is in Khulna, and told him that he must get back to Sri Lanka. Basically we wanted to keep him as an option because they have a number of quality left-hand batsmen. Miraz had been bowling well in the Tests and this is a very important series for us. But when I sat with the team that morning [of the ODI], it still wasn’t decided if Miraz or Sunzamul [Islam] would be playing. It was finalised after coming to the ground.”Mehedi opened the bowling in the chase of 325 in Dambulla, sending down all ten over for figures of 2 for 43.Last week when Hassan had spoken about his role in the Mahmudullah exclusion, he said that he takes “all the decisions”. He has been vocal about selection decisions since the Afghanistan ODI series last September, and during the Bangladesh Premier League too. Incidentally, in June 2016 Hassan had said that the revamped selection committee would cut down his role in selection decisions.

Ollie Robinson takes seven but Nottinghamshire turn screw

England seamer impresses on comeback after Dane Paterson, James Pattinson share all 10

ECB Reporters Network27-Jul-2022Nottinghamshire 240 and 284 for 7 (Hameed 94, James 56, Robinson 3-55) lead Sussex 143 (Paterson 5-43, Pattinson 5-56) by 381 runsEngland’s Ollie Robinson increased his wickets haul to seven in the match but Nottinghamshire were in full control at the halfway stage of their LV= Insurance County Championship match against Sussex.Robinson proved deadly with the new ball for the second time, reducing the Division Two leaders to 40 for 3 in their second innings. But after Haseeb Hameed made 94 and Lyndon James 56, Nottinghamshire finished on 284 for 7, with a lead of 381.Earlier, Nottinghamshire pace bowlers James Pattinson and Dane Paterson finished with five wickets each as Sussex, who sit next to bottom of the table, were bowled out for 143 in reply to Nottinghamshire’s first innings 240.To add to their woes, any points take from this match – they have three thus far – may be lost, as they stand at minus six on their over-rate.Nottinghamshire needed just under an hour first thing to take the final five Sussex wickets, the key breakthrough coming in the sixth over when Paterson trapped Cheteshwar Pujara with an inswinging ball that was too good even for a player of the Indian Test star’s calibre. His wicket, ending a partnership worth 71, more than compensated the South African bowler for a chance missed earlier when Archie Lenham, the 18-year-old son of Neil Lenham and grandson of Les, who had battled courageously alongside Pujara in the face of a high class attack, was put down at second slip. With Pujara gone, Paterson and Pattinson ripped through the remainder so quickly that all five wickets fell for 23 runs in the space of 34 deliveries.Pattinson removed Lenham for a gutsy 31, the youngster looking disappointed to be given out leg before after the ball rolled away to third slip. Robinson was strangled down the leg side, prompting Luke Fletcher to appear alongside Pattinson to congratulate him on his first five-wicket haul of the season. Not to be outdone, Paterson knocked out Sean Hunt’s off stump before having Ari Karvelas plainly leg-before to finish with 5 for 43, Pattinson having taken 5 for 56.As on day one of a breathtakingly fast-moving contest, Robinson came up with a superb opening spell as Sussex, trailing by 97 on first innings, made early inroads.Again, his fourth and fifth overs were productive as Ben Slater, Ben Duckett and Joe Clarke departed in the space of six deliveries, the last-named pair without scoring.Slater went after a short ball with little chance of controlling the shot and was caught at fine leg. Duckett was caught behind off an inside edge before Clarke, offering no shot, was lbw to a ball that kept low.If they had winkelled out Hameed at that point, Sussex might have felt they were back in the contest but the sometime England opener, closing on 1,000 first-class runs in a season for the first time since his sensational breakthrough year at Lancashire in 2016, looked in splendid touch.A superbly timed straight drive for four in Robinson’s opening over was evidence of that and by the time he pulled Brad Currie to the fence for his ninth boundary he had 50 from 71 balls. Having seen the back of Robinson for a while, he and James added 138 in 33 overs.Hameed missed out on a hundred when a ball from Hunt, the 20-year-old left-armer, nipped away to have him caught behind. In his best spell of the match, Hunt also dismissed James, lbw trying to work him to leg.Currie removed Tom Moores shortly after tea with another delivery that found the edge and Steven Mullaney, whose 70 was the key innings in Nottinghamshire’s first innings, added another 42 before he was leg before sweeping another 18-year-old, the left-arm spinner.Pattinson and Liam Patterson-White added 34 before bad light brought the close forward by two overs.

Amorim demanding Ratcliffe signs £80m "Rolls-Royce" for Man Utd this month

Sat 14th and forced to admit that the reality of a relegation battle is no longer a world away, Ruben Amorim is reportedly demanding that Sir Jim Ratcliffe welcomes a reinforcement worth £80m for Manchester United this month.

Man Utd transfer news

Creating history that no one wants to be remembered for by losing five of his first eight league games in charge of Manchester United, the difficulty of the task at hand has never been more apparent for Amorim at Old Trafford. A third consecutive Premier League defeat looked inevitable from minute one against Newcastle United last time out, as does the departure of Marcus Rashford, who was back on the Manchester United bench but unused against the Magpies.

Just seven points clear of the dropzone following Ipswich Town’s victory over Chelsea last time out, Manchester United’s trip to Anfield this weekend couldn’t have been poorer timed as they look to avoid dropping closer and closer to disastrous circumstances.

In such a position, those at Old Trafford must find a way to welcome reinforcements even if they’ve previously seemed reluctant to do so this month, with Amorim desperate for fresh faces.

So much so that, according to The Daily Star, Amorim is now demanding Ratcliffe to sign Viktor Gyokeres this month, telling the Manchester United co-owner that he cannot wait for the summer transfer window and he needs a reunion with the Sporting Club star now.

It’s not always as simple as that, however. Gyokeres’ hefty £80m release clause means that, no matter how much Amorim demands his signature, the Swede may well be out of reach for Manchester United right now.

Likely left stranded with a striker who fans ironically cheered off the pitch in the first-half against Newcastle United – Joshua Zirkzee – and Rasmus Hojlund, who is yet to show more than glimpses of his potential, Amorim must simply survive the season.

Man Utd must back Amorim with "Rolls-Royce" Gyokeres

With the fear of a relegation battle growing more and more of a reality, United may be left with no choice but to spend their way out of trouble. It’s clear that the squad Amorim inherited is far from one built for success in his 3-4-2-1 system, but the Red Devils knew what their new manager required when they hired him and must now back their man in the transfer market.

Dubbed a “Rolls-Royce” by journalist Zach Lowy, Gyokeres would drag Manchester United out of the embarrassment of a relegation battle and onwards at least, but INEOS must first reach his valuation.

A player who starred under Amorim at Sporting, scoring a hat-trick against Manchester City in a Champions League thrashing of the Citizens and hitting 27 goals in 27 games this season, Gyokeres is a must-buy for United in 2025. Whether Ratcliffe will listen to Amorim’s demands remains to be seen, however.

Daryl Mitchell drives New Zealand to commanding position

Ollie Pope cashes in on extra life to build spirited England response after early wobble

Valkerie Baynes11-Jun-2022Stumps Daryl Mitchell’s prize innings put New Zealand in a commanding position at stumps on the second day of the Trent Bridge Test, despite a couple of late blemishes proving he’s only human and that England must take whatever chances they get.Led by Mitchell’s 190, New Zealand posted a first-innings total of 553, their highest score on English soil, after he and fellow centurion Tom Blundell put on a 236-run stand, their country’s highest-ever fifth-wicket partnership.England wobbled, losing Zak Crawley in the second over of their response, but then Ollie Pope showed intent with an unbeaten half-century as he made use of an excellent batting pitch – and some good fortune.Mitchell, dropped on 3 and 104 amid a rash of fielding errors by England, soured a memorable day somewhat when he put down a simple chance at first slip off Tim Southee when Alex Lees was on 12. England were already one down after Trent Boult had Crawley caught behind for just 4 with an excellent cross-seam delivery.Pope pressed the accelerator after facing 45 balls for his first 11 runs, racing to 37 from 56 as he twice pulled Matt Henry for six, the second instance prompting a ball change. Pope should have been gone shortly afterwards but Mitchell spilled another slips catch off Boult which raced away to the rope at third man.Pope set about making New Zealand pay as he moved to fifty with two fours in three Kyle Jamieson deliveries, driven with aplomb through the covers and cut through backward point. Lees, meanwhile, got in on the boundary action too, with five fours on his way to 34 not out at the close. It wasn’t until well into an extended evening session after rain had forced an early tea break that England finally broke the tourists’ stride after they had marched on from Blundell’s dismissal for 106.His exit brought debutant Michael Bracewell to the crease and he played impressively during a 91-run partnership with Mitchell before falling one run shy of his fifty. It was James Anderson who struck first after tea, drawing an outside edge from Bracewell and Joe Root held on firmly at slip, still clenching the ball tightly in his right fist as he animatedly gestured that it was staying put this time after contributing two of England’s five costly missed chances for the New Zealand innings.Joe Root reacts after taking a catch to dismiss Michael Bracewell•AFP via Getty ImagesSo began a run of dismissals in which New Zealand lost four wickets for 24 runs in the space of 3.4 overs and, all told, their last five wickets for 57 runs. Stuart Broad claimed two in an over when he had Jamieson caught behind gloving a short ball then removed Tim Southee with another short ball which bobbed up off the splice and sailed to Root at gully.Jack Leach chimed in when he had Matt Henry out slashing to Crawley in the covers, but then Boult added 33 runs with Mitchell, during which time Boult drew level with Muthiah Muralidaran for the most career Test runs scored at No. 11 with 623. Boult remained unbeaten with 16 from 18 balls when Mitchell finally perished for 190 reaching for a slow, wide ball from Matthew Potts and edging to Ben Foakes behind the stumps.Earlier, Mitchell had backed up his century in last week’s first Test at Lord’s by reaching his second consecutive ton in the morning session after resuming on 81.He stared in slack-jawed astonishment when another fielding error saw him survive – then cash in – shortly after posting his ton. On 104, Mitchell lofted Leach down the ground and Potts, running round to his left from long-on made the distance comfortably but somehow managed only to get a fingernail to the ball before it bounced onto his knee and over the rope for four.Potts bowled the next over, only to concede back-to-back fours to Mitchell, the first bringing up the 200-partnership that had narrowly eluded him and Blundell at Lord’s, via an outside edge behind point and the second a crunching drive through mid-off.Having moved to 90, Blundell paused for treatment after copping a heavy blow to his finger whilst facing Potts. After that, however, he made fast work of reaching his hundred with two fours from three Leach deliveries, the latter as he advanced down the pitch and pummelled the ball back over the bowler’s head for one bounce over the rope, and then a scrambled single off the last ball of the over.Blundell, who managed 96 in a 195-run stand with Mitchell at Lord’s, fell when he took Leach on once more and chipped to Ben Stokes at mid-off.Mitchell carted Leach for 17 runs in the second over after lunch, striking fours through cover and long-on and six down the ground. He launched another six over wide long-on in Leach’s next over and by the end of New Zealand’s innings they had plundered 84 boundaries. That included four sixes in all to Mitchell and nine fours to Bracewell, who impressed on his first Test outing.

India's Adani Group acquires franchise in upcoming UAE T20 League

Adani’s foray into the league makes them the fifth franchise owner in the tournament

ESPNcricinfo staff09-May-2022Adani Group, an Ahmedabad-based Indian infrastructure biggie, has bagged the rights to one of the six franchises in the newly-launched UAE T20 League.Adani’s foray into the league, through their subsidiary Adani Sportsline, makes them the fifth franchise owner in the tournament.
