Cristiano Ronaldo left with egg on his face! Al-Nassr forward blows kisses to Lionel Messi chants but Al-Hilal supporters have last laugh after convincing 3-0 victory

Cristiano Ronaldo's blowing of kisses to chants of Lionel Messi's name didn't age well after his Al-Nassr side fell to a 3-0 loss to Al-Hilal.

Al-Nassr were out-classed by Al-HilalMessi chants fill the stadium to annoy RonaldoAl-Hilal opened up a seven-point advantage over Al-NassrWHAT HAPPENED?

History repeated itself at the King Fahd International Stadium on Friday evening. Back in April, Ronaldo found himself in the eye of controversy after he made an indecent gesture following relentless Messi chants by Al-Hilal fans after a 2-0 loss. This time the taunts grew louder as the margin of defeat was bigger and Ronaldo remained an anonymous figure during a relatively quiet evening.

However, this time around, Ronaldo was more mature in his reaction. The Portuguese soaked in the atmosphere and blew fly kisses to the stands before climbing down the tunnel at half-time, with the scores still locked at 0-0.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic opened the scoring with a blistering header after the hour mark. But the star of the evening was former Fulham striker, Aleksandr Mitrovic, who netted twice in the final minutes of the game to seal the three points for the hosts.

Although Ronaldo did pierce the net on two occasions, he was given offside both times which further added to his frustration.

The defeat to Al-Hilal was a major dent to Al-Nassr's title aspirations as the former went seven points clear at the top of the table. Ronaldo will return to action against Istikloll on Tuesday in an AFC Champions League fixture away from home.

Arsenal's best transfers of all time: From Bergkamp to Henry

The Gunners have done some incredible deals down through the years – GOAL picks out their best ever signings below…

From the dominant days of manager Herbert Chapman’s tenure in the 1930s right through to the modern era, Arsenal have signed some sensational players who have gone on to write their names into the history books.

But which transfers rank as the greatest in the Gunners' long and illustrious history.

GOAL reveals all below…

Eddie Hapgood

Arguably Arsenal’s best ever signing.

Hapgood was plucked from lowly Kettering Town by Gunners manager Herbert Chapman in 1927 for just £950 ($1,170) and went to captain Arsenal’s all-conquering side of the 1930s.

He made 440 appearances in all competitions for Arsenal and won the First Division title five times, as well as the FA Cup twice.

The left-back spent 12 years with Arsenal before the onset of the Second World War, scoring twice.

He died in 1973, at the age of just 64.

AdvertisementGettyIan Wright

Many questioned Arsenal’s decision to spend a club record £2.5 million ($3m) to sign Ian Wright from Crystal Palace in 1991.

The Gunners had just won the First Division title and had two-time golden boot winner Alan Smith leading the line, with Kevin Campbell also at George Graham’s disposal.

But from the moment Wright opened his account with a goal at Leicester City on his Arsenal debut, he quickly silenced any of his doubters.

He went on the score 185 goals for the club, overtaking Cliff Bastin to become Arsenal’s all-time record goalscorer in 1997.

Wright won a Premier League title during his time in North London as well as two FA Cups, a League Cup, the Cup Winners Cup and the Golden Boot.

Alex James

Known as one of the finest players to have ever played for Arsenal, James arrived from Preston in 1929 for £8,750 ($10,800).

The playmaker quickly established himself in Chapman’s stellar side and scored the opening goal as Arsenal beat Huddersfield 2-0 in the 1930 FA Cup final – a victory which gave the club its first ever major trophy.

James went on to make 261 appearances for Arsenal and formed a formidable partnership with legendary attackers Ted Drake and Cliff Bastin.

The Scotland international won four league titles for the Gunners and a second FA Cup in 1936. He was forced to retire due to injury the following year.

Sol Campbell

There is plenty of debate over who is the best free transfer of the Premier League era, but not amongst Arsenal fans.

Sol Campbell’s move across North London from Tottenham in the summer of 2001 is the stuff of legend.

Members of the media were all expecting to see goalkeeper Richard Wright unveiled when they arrived at a press conference at Arsenal’s training ground, so there was an audible gasp when Arsene Wenger walked out accompanied by Campbell – who was football's most in-demand free agent at the time.

Arsenal had taken Spurs’ captain without having to pay them a penny and they had to watch their former idol go on to win two league titles and three FA Cups during his time at Highbury.

Mason Greenwood: State of play for Man Utd forward amid ongoing internal investigation

The 21-year-old has not played for the club since he was arrested in January 2022, and his future remains unclear

As it stands, Mason Greenwood is still a Manchester United player. He was included on their retained list for the 2023-24 season, and remains under contract until 2025. However, United are still in the process of completing an internal investigation to decide Greenwood's future. He was suspended by the club after being arrested on suspicion of rape and assault on January 30, 2022.

In October, Greenwood was arrested again over allegations he'd breached his bail conditions, and was subsequently charged with attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and controlling and coercive behaviour.

Greenwood was re-bailed at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court a month later and his trial date was set for November 2023. But on February 2, the Crown Prosecution Service announced that all charges against him had been dropped.

A few hours later, United released the following statement: "Manchester United notes the decision of the Crown Prosecution Service that all charges against Mason Greenwood have been dropped. The club will now conduct its own process before determining next steps. We will not make any further comment until that process is complete."

With the new season fast approaching, United are yet to conclude their investigation, buthas reported that a decision will be made before the end of July.

GETTYMan Utd staff 'split'

According to , United staff were "split" on whether Greenwood should be allowed to resume his career at Old Trafford when the internal investigation began. Some felt the club owed him a "duty of care" given the fact he has been on their books since the age of seven.

However, the report also stated that a "substantial portion" of staff "would be deeply unhappy" if Greenwood were to wear the famous red shirt again. Meanwhile, United manager Erik ten Hag was asked how he planned to deal with the situation.

“It’s really important but sometimes you get issues,” he told reporters. “Then as a club and team you have to deal with it. We have standards and values. We have to live along those high standards and values and that gives a base if you have a good culture and spirit. That’s our job, not to get distracted by anything. We are human beings and sometimes there are issues, we are not like robots, but we have to focus on our job."

AdvertisementWomen's team reaction

Some members of the United Women's team made it clear that they were "deeply uncomfortable" over Greenwood's potential return, after hearing an audio that was released on social media before his initial arrest – as per .

Their discomfort was shared by the founder of the United Women’s Supporters’ Club, Natalie Burrell. “I don’t think he should play again for Manchester United,” Burrell told . “It’s one of the biggest clubs in the world. They need to make a statement and letting him back would be the worst thing they could do.

"It would set our club back in terms of what we’re trying to do with our women’s team and campaigns like Her Game Too, which are trying to encourage women to play and watch football. I just don’t want to see him training. I don’t want to see him in a (United) kit. I don’t want to see him ever coming out at Old Trafford again.”

GettyTV interview & therapy

By the start of March, United had begun mapping out a "phased process" for Greenwood's reintegration into the first-team squad as they considered all of their options – according to . This included encouraging the player to undertake a form of therapy, before a potentially more comprehensive rehabilitation.

The report added that Greenwood could also be challenged publicly on the events of the previous 18 months in a television interview. However, it was also stressed that this was merely one possibility, and that a parting of ways was also still under consideration.

Getty ImagesLoan transfer talk

United reportedly received loan enquiries for Greenwood from several Turkish clubs after the criminal charges against him were dropped. The Turkish Football Federation announced that their winter transfer window had been extended until March 5 by FIFA following the deadly earthquake that hit the country on February 6.

No deal was pursued by United at that stage, but speculation only increased heading into April. Spanish outlet stated that AC Milan had identified Greenwood as a summer transfer target in a bid to bolster their attacking ranks.

The following month, reported that Juventus had made contact with Greenwood's representatives over a potential season-long loan deal. It was then said that United had begun actively looking for European clubs willing to take the forward on a temporary basis.

United's 2022-23 campaign ended without Greenwood seeing a single minute of action, but he then reportedly emerged on the radar of Jose Mourinho at Roma. It was the Portuguese that initially brought him into the senior ranks as coach of United in 2018, and claimed he had spoken to Greenwood's father about a reunion at Stadio Olimpico.

Man City player ratings vs Newcastle: Kalvin Phillips looks well short of a suitable Rodri replacement as midfield woes contribute to early Carabao Cup exit

Pep Guardiola's side limped out of the competition after dominating possession but doing little with it before being overpowered in the second half

Kalvin Phillips was given a golden opportunity to play his way back into Pep Guardiola's thoughts when Rodri got sent off against Nottingham Forest, but he did not make use of his first chance as Manchester City were outthought and outfought by Newcastle and sent crashing out of the Carabao Cup with a 1-0 defeat.

Phillips summed up City's first-half display, playing lots of nice passes and keeping control but without taking any risks or trying to genuinely put Eddie Howe's side under pressure. Newcastle finally came out of the blocks after the break and played with intensity and bravery and City, especially Phillips, had little response.

It was the first time Guardiola's side have lost a match in 90 minutes since May and arguably the first match that mattered since they were beaten by Tottenham in February. All good runs must come to an end at some point, however, and now City must make their peace with the fact that there is at least one competition they won't be winning this season.

GOAL rates Man City's players from St James' Park…

Getty ImagesGoalkeeper & Defence

Stefan Ortega (6/10):

Excellent on the ball, calmly passing out despite opponents breathing down his neck. Made the save of the first half to deny Murphy, could do little about Isak's goal.

Rico Lewis (5/10):

Culpable for the goal, not checking his surroundings when deciding to let Joelinton's cross go. Calm in possession in the first half but overpowered in the second. Came close to a late leveller with shot that just went wide.

Manuel Akanji (5/10):

Looked shaken just after Newcastle took the lead. Solid before then, and picked up the armband from Ake late on.

Josko Gvardiol (4/10):

Made a few sloppy passes, one which gifted Murphy his first-half chance, and didn't command the area well for the goal.

Nathan Ake (5/10):

Too passive in the second half.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesMidfield

Mateo Kovacic (5/10):

Helped control the first half but rarely looked like making anything happen.

Kalvin Phillips (4/10):

Did not take the chance afforded to him by Rodri's suspension. His passing was imprecise and could not fight back Newcastle's waves of pressure after the break.

Sergio Gomez (5/10):

Too ponderous in possession and hardly got forward into good positions.

Getty ImagesAttack

Oscar Bobb (7/10):

An excellent full debut. Worked so hard off the ball and looked like one of few City players capable of doing something useful with it.

Julian Alvarez (5/10):

Not his day. Spurned City's best chance of the first half and barely threatened after that.

Jack Grealish (5/10):

His first start for a month and he looked rusty and uninspired. A shot down Pope's throat was his only attacking contribution.

Getty ImagesSubs & Manager

Jeremy Doku (6/10):

Didn't manage to make much use of his twisting runs and speedy dribbling.

Matheus Nunes (5/10):

Got pushed around when he came on.

Phil Foden (6/10):

Gave City more purpose when he came on but couldn't really help them.

Pep Guardiola (5/10):

Set a bad tone by complaining about City's travel options before the game. Still picked a strong team but didn't go all out to get back into the game, leaving Haaland and Walker on the bench.

Senegalese star left Goodison in 2019Worked with iconic figures in FranceReturned to Merseyside in summer of 2022GettyWHAT HAPPENED?

The Senegal international midfielder spent one season working with the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner at Parc des Princes in 2021-22. He kept a close eye on events at Goodison Park during that campaign, as the Toffees battled to avoid relegation out of the Premier League.

AdvertisementWHAT GUEYE SAID

His team-mates in France were left a little puzzled by his interest in Everton, with Gueye telling : “It was difficult in the last year, we keep supporting, we believed. I remember [Julian] Draxler every time we lose, he would go 'you see your team, they are not good!' and I would say, 'We will survive' so the day we survived against Crystal Palace he said 'you were lucky' and I said 'I told you'. I told him to come to Everton but he hasn't listened!”

Argentine icon Messi was another to question Gueye’s passion for the Toffees, but he did get Kylian Mbappe on board. The 34-year-old midfielder, who returned to Merseyside for a second spell in 2022, added: “Mbappe, yeah he would watch. He liked to watch every game. Messi, no. It was difficult for me because we were losing a lot and he would say, 'Bro come on you see your team is losing and playing like this?' but it was funny. I used to send Seamus Coleman, Mason Holgate and Jordan Pickford messages 'Bro, please do it!'. It was important for me to support and show I was there for them.”

Gueye is hoping to help steer Everton clear of danger again in 2023-24, with another basement battle being played out. Messi, meanwhile, is now in MLS with Inter Miami while Mbappe is reportedly preparing to sever ties with PSG and complete a stunning move to Real Madrid as a free agent.

Both Sohaib Maqsood and Sohail Khan were sidelined over fitness issues, and Junaid Khan was the other notable exclusion for the Zimbabwe series.Sami’s call-up came as a surprise considering he has not played for Pakistan since June 2012, when they toured Sri Lanka. Davide Astori tragedy: Fiorentina's beloved captain gone, but not forgotten

One year on from his tragic death, Goal looks at the ways that the defender has been honoured by the club's players, fans and rivals

Getty'Il Muro di Astori''Astori's wall' – one of the most poignant symbols of the untimely passing of one of Italian football's most beloved characters. It was the part of the gate at the Stadio Artemio Franchi at which thousands of fans, team-mates and opponents came to lay flowers, shirts, scarves, photos, banners and notes in the hours, days and months after Davide Astori's death on March 4, 2018. The touching, makeshift shrine has since been moved to the Centro Sportivo which now also bears the defender's name.AdvertisementGettyFlorence in mourning

Astori's death left an entire city in a state of shock. In announcing a day of mourning in Florence, mayor Dario Nardella stated:

"The role of captain of the city's team; the deep bond that he had built with not only the fans but also the entire community thanks also to his human qualities and civic values; the exemplary conduct of a professional attached to the most important ideals of the Viola shirt; the national team and the world of sport in general which he represented; and, not least, the young age at which he was take so tragically and suddenly – all of these things are at the heart of the collective sense of loss felt in all of Florence."

There were messages of support for Astori's family, the club he represented and those who had supported of him. Unsurprisingly, Chapecoense, the club devastated by the plane crash that claimed 77 lives on November 28, 2016, were among the first to send their condolences.

"The Chapecoense team is profoundly affected by the death of Fiorentina captain Davide Astori. Our deepest sympathies go to the Astori family, his team-mates and friends and we share their pain."

Getty ImagesSaponara's touching tribute

Fiorentina's players were both stunned and traumatised by the sudden loss of their team-mate. One by one, they paid tribute to their captain but it was Riccardo Saponara who perhaps best conveyed their sense of a loss with an open letter to Astori that was as beautiful as it was heart-breaking.

"O captain, my captain. Why did you not come down to have breakfast with us all? Why did you not pick up your shoes from outside of Marco [Sportiello]'s room and then drink your orange juice, as usual?

"Now they'll tell us that life goes on, that we must look forward and pick ourselves up, but what will your absence feel like? Who will arrive every morning in the cafeteria, warming up everyone with his smile?

"Who will ask us about what we did the previous night and have a laugh about it? Who will nurture the youngsters and give a sense of responsibility to the veterans? Who will form the circle to work on our 'two-touch play' and who will demolish Marco on the PlayStation?

"With whom will we debate Masterchef, Florence's restaurants, TV series or games played? Who will I lean on at lunch after a tiring training session? Come on, come back! You still need to finish watching LaLaLand, so you can analyse it like you did with all new movies.

"Come back to Florence, they're waiting for you to renew your contract and acknowledge all the good and the positivity that you bring to us on a daily basis. Get out of that damn room! We'll be waiting for you tomorrow at training

"In life, there are people you've known forever but have never bonded with, and then there are the 'Davides', who warm to you immediately with a simple 'Welcome to Florence, Ricky'.

"Wherever you are now, keep on defending our goal and enlighten the right path for us from the backline.

"Oh captain, my captain. Forever, my captain."

Who is Australia's leading all-time top goal scorer? Cahill, Jedinak and the Socceroos' greatest strikers

Tim Cahill leads the way for Australia at international level

Australia might not have the history that a lot of other countries have when it comes to the beautiful game, but they have sure had some high-profile names represent them at the international stage over the years.

Just think Harry Kewell.

Or Mark Viduka.

Yet even though the two former Premier League stars got plenty of goals, they are not among Australia's 10 highest-ever goal scorers.

But who is Australia's most lethal attacker ever then?

Let's take a look!

AFP1Tim Cahill | 50 goals

The greatest goalscorer Australia has produced with 50 international goals, Tim Cahill was part of the national team setup for 14 years between 2004 to 2018.

His first goal for the Socceroos came as part of a brace against Tahiti in May 2004, while Cahill scored two goals each at the World Cup in 2006 and 2014.

Cahill's stunning goal against Netherlands at the 2014 World Cup is remembered to this day as he beat Jasper Cillessen with an incredible left-footed volley.

The Everton legend's most lethal performances for the Socceroos came when he netted hat-tricks against Fiji and Bangladesh respectively.

AdvertisementNigel Marple2Damian Mori | 29 goals

Part of Australia's national team for a decade between 1992 and 2002, Damian Mori made his debut against Solomon Islands in September 1992.

The Adelaide City legend scored his first international goal against Tahiti in just his second game for the Socceroos and he scored a total of 29 goals in 45 caps spanning just under 10 years, making him the second-highest goal scorer for Australia.

Getty3Archie Thompson | 28 goals

Third on the list of Australia's all-time top goal scorers with 28 goals in 51 matches is Archie Thompson.

The New Zealand-born striker featured for the Socceroos at the 2001 and 2005 Confederations Cup, the 2004 OFC Nations Cup, the 2006 World Cup, the 2007 AFC Asian Cup and the 2008 Summer Olympics.

Thompson holds the all-time goal-scoring record in a single international match, netting 13 times in Australia's memorable 31-0 win against American Samoa in 2001.

Aloisi featured at the 2006 World Cup and scored in their opening game against Japan, helping them reach the knockout stages from a group that also held Brazil and Coatia.
