History repeated itself at the King Fahd International Stadium on Friday evening. Back in April, Ronaldo found himself in the eye of controversy after he made an indecent gesture following relentless Messi chants by Al-Hilal fans after a 2-0 loss. This time the taunts grew louder as the margin of defeat was bigger and Ronaldo remained an anonymous figure during a relatively quiet evening.

However, this time around, Ronaldo was more mature in his reaction. The Portuguese soaked in the atmosphere and blew fly kisses to the stands before climbing down the tunnel at half-time, with the scores still locked at 0-0.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic opened the scoring with a blistering header after the hour mark. But the star of the evening was former Fulham striker, Aleksandr Mitrovic, who netted twice in the final minutes of the game to seal the three points for the hosts.

Although Ronaldo did pierce the net on two occasions, he was given offside both times which further added to his frustration.

Getty ImagesWHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Liverpool will be reluctant to miss out on a deal to old adversaries, having already been beaten to Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia by Chelsea this summer. However, United have plenty of factors working in their favour and have seen the need for midfield additions highlighted through their opening two games of the 2023-24 campaign.

Mason Greenwood: State of play for Man Utd forward amid ongoing internal investigation

The 21-year-old has not played for the club since he was arrested in January 2022, and his future remains unclear

As it stands, Mason Greenwood is still a Manchester United player. He was included on their retained list for the 2023-24 season, and remains under contract until 2025. However, United are still in the process of completing an internal investigation to decide Greenwood's future. He was suspended by the club after being arrested on suspicion of rape and assault on January 30, 2022.

In October, Greenwood was arrested again over allegations he'd breached his bail conditions, and was subsequently charged with attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and controlling and coercive behaviour.

Greenwood was re-bailed at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court a month later and his trial date was set for November 2023. But on February 2, the Crown Prosecution Service announced that all charges against him had been dropped.

A few hours later, United released the following statement: "Manchester United notes the decision of the Crown Prosecution Service that all charges against Mason Greenwood have been dropped. The club will now conduct its own process before determining next steps. We will not make any further comment until that process is complete."

With the new season fast approaching, United are yet to conclude their investigation, buthas reported that a decision will be made before the end of July.

GETTYMan Utd staff 'split'

According to , United staff were "split" on whether Greenwood should be allowed to resume his career at Old Trafford when the internal investigation began. Some felt the club owed him a "duty of care" given the fact he has been on their books since the age of seven.

However, the report also stated that a "substantial portion" of staff "would be deeply unhappy" if Greenwood were to wear the famous red shirt again. Meanwhile, United manager Erik ten Hag was asked how he planned to deal with the situation.

“It’s really important but sometimes you get issues,” he told reporters. “Then as a club and team you have to deal with it. We have standards and values. We have to live along those high standards and values and that gives a base if you have a good culture and spirit. That’s our job, not to get distracted by anything. We are human beings and sometimes there are issues, we are not like robots, but we have to focus on our job."

AdvertisementWomen's team reaction

Some members of the United Women's team made it clear that they were "deeply uncomfortable" over Greenwood's potential return, after hearing an audio that was released on social media before his initial arrest – as per .

Their discomfort was shared by the founder of the United Women’s Supporters’ Club, Natalie Burrell. “I don’t think he should play again for Manchester United,” Burrell told . “It’s one of the biggest clubs in the world. They need to make a statement and letting him back would be the worst thing they could do.

"It would set our club back in terms of what we’re trying to do with our women’s team and campaigns like Her Game Too, which are trying to encourage women to play and watch football. I just don’t want to see him training. I don’t want to see him in a (United) kit. I don’t want to see him ever coming out at Old Trafford again.”

GettyTV interview & therapy

By the start of March, United had begun mapping out a "phased process" for Greenwood's reintegration into the first-team squad as they considered all of their options – according to . This included encouraging the player to undertake a form of therapy, before a potentially more comprehensive rehabilitation.

The report added that Greenwood could also be challenged publicly on the events of the previous 18 months in a television interview. However, it was also stressed that this was merely one possibility, and that a parting of ways was also still under consideration.

Getty ImagesLoan transfer talk

United reportedly received loan enquiries for Greenwood from several Turkish clubs after the criminal charges against him were dropped. The Turkish Football Federation announced that their winter transfer window had been extended until March 5 by FIFA following the deadly earthquake that hit the country on February 6.

No deal was pursued by United at that stage, but speculation only increased heading into April. Spanish outlet stated that AC Milan had identified Greenwood as a summer transfer target in a bid to bolster their attacking ranks.

The following month, reported that Juventus had made contact with Greenwood's representatives over a potential season-long loan deal. It was then said that United had begun actively looking for European clubs willing to take the forward on a temporary basis.

United's 2022-23 campaign ended without Greenwood seeing a single minute of action, but he then reportedly emerged on the radar of Jose Mourinho at Roma. It was the Portuguese that initially brought him into the senior ranks as coach of United in 2018, and claimed he had spoken to Greenwood's father about a reunion at Stadio Olimpico.

Arsenal's best transfers of all time: From Bergkamp to Henry

The Gunners have done some incredible deals down through the years – GOAL picks out their best ever signings below…

From the dominant days of manager Herbert Chapman’s tenure in the 1930s right through to the modern era, Arsenal have signed some sensational players who have gone on to write their names into the history books.

But which transfers rank as the greatest in the Gunners' long and illustrious history.

GOAL reveals all below…

Eddie Hapgood

Arguably Arsenal’s best ever signing.

Hapgood was plucked from lowly Kettering Town by Gunners manager Herbert Chapman in 1927 for just £950 ($1,170) and went to captain Arsenal’s all-conquering side of the 1930s.

He made 440 appearances in all competitions for Arsenal and won the First Division title five times, as well as the FA Cup twice.

The left-back spent 12 years with Arsenal before the onset of the Second World War, scoring twice.

He died in 1973, at the age of just 64.

AdvertisementGettyIan Wright

Many questioned Arsenal’s decision to spend a club record £2.5 million ($3m) to sign Ian Wright from Crystal Palace in 1991.

The Gunners had just won the First Division title and had two-time golden boot winner Alan Smith leading the line, with Kevin Campbell also at George Graham’s disposal.

But from the moment Wright opened his account with a goal at Leicester City on his Arsenal debut, he quickly silenced any of his doubters.

He went on the score 185 goals for the club, overtaking Cliff Bastin to become Arsenal’s all-time record goalscorer in 1997.

Wright won a Premier League title during his time in North London as well as two FA Cups, a League Cup, the Cup Winners Cup and the Golden Boot.

Alex James

Known as one of the finest players to have ever played for Arsenal, James arrived from Preston in 1929 for £8,750 ($10,800).

The playmaker quickly established himself in Chapman’s stellar side and scored the opening goal as Arsenal beat Huddersfield 2-0 in the 1930 FA Cup final – a victory which gave the club its first ever major trophy.

James went on to make 261 appearances for Arsenal and formed a formidable partnership with legendary attackers Ted Drake and Cliff Bastin.

The Scotland international won four league titles for the Gunners and a second FA Cup in 1936. He was forced to retire due to injury the following year.

Sol Campbell

There is plenty of debate over who is the best free transfer of the Premier League era, but not amongst Arsenal fans.

Sol Campbell’s move across North London from Tottenham in the summer of 2001 is the stuff of legend.

Members of the media were all expecting to see goalkeeper Richard Wright unveiled when they arrived at a press conference at Arsenal’s training ground, so there was an audible gasp when Arsene Wenger walked out accompanied by Campbell – who was football's most in-demand free agent at the time.

Arsenal had taken Spurs’ captain without having to pay them a penny and they had to watch their former idol go on to win two league titles and three FA Cups during his time at Highbury.

The Senegal international midfielder spent one season working with the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner at Parc des Princes in 2021-22. He kept a close eye on events at Goodison Park during that campaign, as the Toffees battled to avoid relegation out of the Premier League.

His team-mates in France were left a little puzzled by his interest in Everton, with Gueye telling : “It was difficult in the last year, we keep supporting, we believed. I remember [Julian] Draxler every time we lose, he would go 'you see your team, they are not good!' and I would say, 'We will survive' so the day we survived against Crystal Palace he said 'you were lucky' and I said 'I told you'. I told him to come to Everton but he hasn't listened!”

Argentine icon Messi was another to question Gueye’s passion for the Toffees, but he did get Kylian Mbappe on board. The 34-year-old midfielder, who returned to Merseyside for a second spell in 2022, added: “Mbappe, yeah he would watch. He liked to watch every game. Messi, no. It was difficult for me because we were losing a lot and he would say, 'Bro come on you see your team is losing and playing like this?' but it was funny. I used to send Seamus Coleman, Mason Holgate and Jordan Pickford messages 'Bro, please do it!'. It was important for me to support and show I was there for them.”

Welcome to Liverpool, Cody Gakpo! Winners, losers and ratings as brilliant Stefan Bajcetic runs Everton ragged in Merseyside derby

Cody Gakpo got off the mark at Anfield as 18-year-old Stefan Bajcetic ran the show in Liverpool's Merseyside derby win over Everton.

Much has changed at Liverpool this season, and most of it for the worse, but their supremacy on Merseyside remains.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have had their struggles since the turn of the year, but they were too good for Everton here at Anfield, and the hope will be that this 2-0 derby win can inject some momentum into a stuttering campaign.

Victory came courtesy of a first-half strike from Mohamed Salah and a first Reds goal for Cody Gakpo after the break – both of them the result of lightning-quick counter-attacks. Everton, who arrived buoyed by their win over Arsenal last time out, offered precious little in response and their new manager, Sean Dyche, knows they still face a serious battle to avoid relegation this season. Defeat leaves the Toffees third from bottom in the Premier League, while Liverpool climb above fellow underperformers Chelsea into ninth.

Here are the winners and losers from an eventful night…

GettyThe Winners

Mohamed Salah:

Thirteen seconds. That was all it took to turn panic into delirium, and end a goal drought that was starting to get more than a little worrying for Liverpool’s Egyptian King. Everton thought they had the lead when James Tarkowski climbed highest to meet Alex Iwobi’s high, hanging corner in the 35th minute, but by the time the clock struck 36 they were behind. Tarkowski’s header hit the post, Liverpool broke and Darwin Nunez picked the perfect pass for Salah, who took advantage of some woeful positioning from Jordan Pickford to prod in his 18th goal of the season, and spark wild celebrations on the Kop. He had a hand in his side’s second goal too, his pass allowing Trent Alexander-Arnold to set up Gakpo for a far-post tap-in, and while he was unable to inflict further damage, Klopp will have been delighted to see his star man back on the scoresheet, and back smiling.

Cody Gakpo:

And on the seventh day, Liverpool’s new boy introduced himself properly. It’s been a tough start to life at Anfield for Gakpo, but he’ll have gone to bed with a great big smile on his face tonight, having grabbed his first Reds goal, and in the game which matters most to his new supporters. The Dutchman was perfectly-placed at the far post to tap home Alexander-Arnold’s immaculate low cross and give his side what proved to be an unassailable two-goal lead. The relief was clear on the 23-year-old’s face, and also in his performance across the next half hour, as he tore into Everton with the kind of confidence, purpose and quality we associated with him in his time at PSV Eindhoven. He left to a standing ovation, and a bear hug from Klopp. Job done. The first one is usually the hardest, now we can really start to see what the £44 million ($53m) man is made of.

Stefan Bajcetic:

Liverpool’s present and its future, all wrapped up in one very special young footballer. To boss a game like this at 18 takes some doing, but Bajcetic accomplished it. He was brilliant from start to finish, reading the game expertly, taking the ball anywhere and tackling like it meant something. One challenge, on Alex Iwobi, led to Liverpool’s second goal, another interception and forward burst should have led to another for Salah. Everton, in Abdoulaye Doucoure, Idrissa Gueye and the highly-rated Amadou Onana, had legs and experience in midfield, but Liverpool had the game’s best player, with Bajcetic’s calmness and class bringing out improvement in both Jordan Henderson and Fabinho, who had their best games for a while. Older fans may remember a teenager called Billy Kenny dominating a derby match for Everton back in the early days of the Premier League. He was never able to fulfil his rich potential, as it turned out, but hopes are high that Bajcetic can become a star for Liverpool. Here, we saw why everyone at Anfield is so excited by him.

AdvertisementGettyThe Losers

Jordan Pickford:

Where was he going? What was he thinking? The Everton goalkeeper doesn’t have great memories of Anfield, and he won’t want to remember his latest visit in a hurry either. It was his error that opened the game up. The England international is always keen to get himself involved, but he badly misjudged his charge from the line as Liverpool broke, nine minutes before half-time. With Pickford in no man’s land, Salah had the simple task of poking the opening goal home. Everton never recovered, and though Pickford made a couple of decent saves to deny Nunez and Salah in the second half, he made a fool of himself again late on, rushing out of his goal to confront Andy Robertson, who simply laughed in response. A yellow card, to go with another derby howler. Pickford won’t want to return any time soon.

Ellis Simms:

As one youngster thrived in the cut and thrust of a derby, so another faded into the background. Simms was a surprise choice by Dyche to lead the line for Everton. The 22-year-old had only started one Premier League game before this one, and had spent the first four months of this season on loan at Sunderland in the Championship. But with Dominic Calvert-Lewin injured – again – Dyche overlooked both Neal Maupay and Demarai Gray and went with the wildcard option. It didn’t pay off. Simms looked out of his depth against Joe Gomez and Joel Matip, with Everton offering zero by way of attacking threat as a result. He lasted an hour before being replaced by Gray – an indictment of Maupay’s struggles, to say the least – and it will be a surprise if we see him in a game of this size again any time soon. Everton need Calvert-Lewin back sharpish.

Sean Dyche:

Maybe Dycheball isn’t all that hard to stop after all. After the joy of Arsenal, Evertonians were brought back down to earth here, reminded that while they may have a new manager who bans hats and snoods and makes them train with long socks and shinpads, they also have a team that lacks balance and quality, and which has been in and around the relegation zone for more than 12 months. Dyche may reflect on fine margins – how different the world may look had Tarkowski’s header dropped in – but he will know deep down that Everton were second best in all departments here. What will hurt him most is that they were outbattled as well as outplayed. He has a job on his hands to keep this side up. Leeds on Saturday is huge.

Man City player ratings vs Newcastle: Kalvin Phillips looks well short of a suitable Rodri replacement as midfield woes contribute to early Carabao Cup exit

Pep Guardiola's side limped out of the competition after dominating possession but doing little with it before being overpowered in the second half

Kalvin Phillips was given a golden opportunity to play his way back into Pep Guardiola's thoughts when Rodri got sent off against Nottingham Forest, but he did not make use of his first chance as Manchester City were outthought and outfought by Newcastle and sent crashing out of the Carabao Cup with a 1-0 defeat.

Phillips summed up City's first-half display, playing lots of nice passes and keeping control but without taking any risks or trying to genuinely put Eddie Howe's side under pressure. Newcastle finally came out of the blocks after the break and played with intensity and bravery and City, especially Phillips, had little response.

It was the first time Guardiola's side have lost a match in 90 minutes since May and arguably the first match that mattered since they were beaten by Tottenham in February. All good runs must come to an end at some point, however, and now City must make their peace with the fact that there is at least one competition they won't be winning this season.

Stefan Ortega (6/10):

Excellent on the ball, calmly passing out despite opponents breathing down his neck. Made the save of the first half to deny Murphy, could do little about Isak's goal.

Rico Lewis (5/10):

Culpable for the goal, not checking his surroundings when deciding to let Joelinton's cross go. Calm in possession in the first half but overpowered in the second. Came close to a late leveller with shot that just went wide.

Manuel Akanji (5/10):

Looked shaken just after Newcastle took the lead. Solid before then, and picked up the armband from Ake late on.

Josko Gvardiol (4/10):

Made a few sloppy passes, one which gifted Murphy his first-half chance, and didn't command the area well for the goal.

Nathan Ake (5/10):

Too passive in the second half.

Mateo Kovacic (5/10):

Helped control the first half but rarely looked like making anything happen.

Kalvin Phillips (4/10):

Did not take the chance afforded to him by Rodri's suspension. His passing was imprecise and could not fight back Newcastle's waves of pressure after the break.

Sergio Gomez (5/10):

Too ponderous in possession and hardly got forward into good positions.

Oscar Bobb (7/10):

An excellent full debut. Worked so hard off the ball and looked like one of few City players capable of doing something useful with it.

Julian Alvarez (5/10):

Not his day. Spurned City's best chance of the first half and barely threatened after that.

Jack Grealish (5/10):

His first start for a month and he looked rusty and uninspired. A shot down Pope's throat was his only attacking contribution.

Hannibal Mejbri is Man Utd's secret weapon! Youngster is a pressing machine and the youthful energy Erik ten Hag needs in dark times

The Tunisia international is the perfect antidote to the doom surrounding Old Trafford, as his unbridled enthusiasm can give the Red Devils an edge

Manchester United youngsters have a habit of coming to the fore when the first team is at its lowest ebb. When David Moyes was staring a defeat to Sunderland in the face that threatened to deepen his miserable start in the Old Trafford dugout in October 2013, an 18-year-old debutant named Adnan Januzaj was his unlikely saviour, scoring two goals in the space of a minute to turn a 1-0 defeat into a 2-1 win.

In February 2016, Louis van Gaal was reeling from a dip in form, an injury crisis afflicting 13 of his players and heading towards a humiliating Europa League elimination at the hands of Midtjylland before an unknown teenager named Marcus Rashford stepped up out of nowhere to inspire the team to a 5-1 win, then three days later scored twice against Arsenal.

Mason Greenwood broke into the team when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was deep in trouble during the 2019-20 season, scoring 10 goals between the end of November and the end of the campaign. Ralf Rangnick's knight in shining armour was Anthony Elanga, who scored off the bench to rescue a Champions League away draw with Atletico Madrid.

And amid an unexpectedly grim start to this season, Hannibal Mejbri has emerged as Erik ten Hag's secret weapon. The club may have spent close to £200 million ($244m) on new signings over the summer, but it is the Sideshow Bob lookalike who has caught the attention, breathing new life into a squad that looks increasingly jaded.

Getty ImagesImpressing Neville on a dark day

Hannibal joined United in 2019 for £9m ($11m) when he was just 16, having starred for Monaco in the UEFA Youth League. He had to wait two years to make his first senior appearance, though, as he enjoyed an eight-minute cameo against Wolves on the final day of the 2020-21 season.

His next appearance came almost a year later and in cruel circumstances. He came off the bench at Anfield with United losing 3-0, and within a minute of coming on Mohamed Salah had made it four. But the climate of humiliation could not quell the teenager's enthusiasm and he ran his heart out in just a few minutes on the pitch, flying into challenges and even collecting a booking for a rough challenge on Jordan Henderson.

Gary Neville, who was feeling exasperated in the commentary box and seemed to be almost losing the will to live, had his spirits lifted. “To be fair at least the kid’s showing something,” said the former United captain. “Honestly, it takes a young kid to come on and show the rest of them how to sprint to the ball and put a challenge in. I’m actually proud of him. Maybe he doesn’t like the idea of Liverpool passing around him, I wish the others were the same.”

AdvertisementGetty ImagesBolt from the blue against Brighton

Fittingly for someone named after the Carthaginian general who commanded his army against the Romans, Hannibal seems to relish entering battle when his side is in trouble and needs a hero. After a successful season on loan at Birmingham City in 2022-23, his first appearance back for United was when they were trailing 2-0 at home to Brighton.

Two minutes after United had fallen a third goal down, the Tunisia international took matters into his own hands, launching the ball at goal from outside the area and beating Jason Steele at his near post. United were still trailing 3-1, but Hannibal celebrated as if he had just struck the winner in the Champions League final, throwing his fists into the air and gesturing to the crowd to keep the faith.

His goal did not end up inspiring a comeback but, rather like at Anfield the year before, he had given United hope when everything around them was crumbling. It was just not his goal that lifted spirits. He sprinted all over the pitch, chasing down opponents and going after the ball in stark contrast to the tired body language of Casemiro, whom he had replaced.

Getty Pressing from the front

Hannibal was rewarded for his galvanising performance off the bench with his first start of the season against Burnley. He was deployed in an unusually advanced position, effectively as a supporting striker to Rasmus Hojlund.

He did not see much of the ball, and only Hojlund had fewer touches than him of all the starters at Turf Moor. But he was a ball of energy throughout the 90 minutes and he did not stop running until the final whistle sounded to announce United's first away win of the season.

"He brought some energy in the team – the pressing, Rasmus Hojlund and Hannibal, together how they start the moments of the pressing, the timing was very good and togetherness with Bruno [Fernandes] and Rashy," Ten Hag said. "I thought they controlled the game in that spell they started the pressing so well and once they got beaten there was a recovery. Hannibal did that very good."

(C)Getty ImagesMan Utd's Modric?

Hannibal has many attributes and has played in several positions throughout his career. He was a central midfielder for Monaco and for Birmingham, although he played as a No.10 or a winger during his first two years with United's youth team.

His broad skillset means he can help United in various ways. At Birmingham, he demonstrated an ability to bring the ball out of defence and dribble his way out of pressure, something remarkably few United players are capable of doing.

"He can play in a lot of positions: he can be a playmaker, he can be a regista (deep-lying playmaker), he can be a defensive midfielder, he can be a winger… but for me, his best position is central midfield," Tunisia's sporting director Mohamed Slim Ben Othman told last year. "He likes to be the player who can organise and coordinate his team. He has big physical abilities and is very selfless despite his large technical qualities. I see him as a central midfielder — similar to Luka Modric."
